SHAKE RAG ALLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS

CULTIVATING CREATIVITY SINCE 2004 Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that exists to provide educational experiences in visual, performing, and literary arts for adults and children; cultivate the creativity that thrives in our rural community; and rehabilitate and preserve our historic buildings and rustic campus. Created in 2004 by community members and artists, our lush, 2.5-acre campus of gardens and historic buildings is situated in the historic heart of the charming arts community of Mineral Point in beautiful, hilly, southwestern Wisconsin. From late winter through mid-November we offer more than 200 workshops for adults ranging from introductory half-day classes to multi-day in-depth classes and retreats in addition to art and community events. Our workshop instructors are drawn from a wealth of creative talents and include nationally known artists from around the world and across the street. Class sizes are small and afford plenty of personal attention. All skill levels are welcome.

HOW TO SUPPORT SHAKE RAG ALLEY We’re not only running an art school for children and adults that plays host to several community events each year: We’re also committed to preserving and maintaining nine historic buildings and Alley Stage, as well as keeping the weeds pulled, the trees trimmed, and the flowers blooming on our lovely campus. We do all that we do with a full-time director and six part-time staff, a dedicated Board of Directors, and an indispensable core of volunteers — but we can’t do what we do without the financial support of individual donors. When you give a financial gift, participate in one of our fundraising events, volunteer your time and energy at Shake Rag Alley — you are supporting us. To volunteer and to learn more about giving a gift of annual support and including Shake Rag Alley in your estate planning, please see our website or call the office.

A portion of Shake Rag Alley’s operating budget — 5% — is supported by grants from the Mineral Point Community Chest, the United Fund of Iowa County, and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

POTTERY PROGRAM

Expanded Offerings Honor Howdle’s Legacy Shake Rag Alley mourned the sudden death of pottery instructor Bruce Howdle in August 2018 (see p. 15), but there was never any doubt that we would continue to offer pottery workshops in The Sardeson Studio at 223 Commerce St. This space, adjacent to Bruce’s own studio and gallery, is where he worked on his murals and sculptures and taught our students. In 2019, workshops will be led by four potters: Joelle and Katie White, who apprenticed with Bruce and assisted him in setting up our studio for last year’s inaugural pottery program, Joe Cole of Mineral Point’s Windy Ridge Pottery, and Adamah Clay Studios Director Jennifer Mally. Interspersed throughout the year, non-instructional Open Studio/Lab weekends will be offered for those who would like to use the studio equipment and are able work on their own.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants Halfway through the inaugural year of our pottery program, we lost one of the artists and instructors whose time, energy, and spirit was so fundamental to the expansion of our arts and crafts programming. A nationally known ceramic relief sculptural muralist, potter, teacher, neighbor, friend — Bruce Howdle was all of these to us over the years, and a strong supporter of our mission. Since the death of his dear friend Roland Sardeson in Photo credit: Phil Mrozinski 2016, Bruce had worked with Shake Rag Alley's board and staff on the renovation of The Sardeson building, which Roland bequeathed to us. With the conversion of his mural studio into the Shake Rag Alley pottery studio in The Sardeson, Bruce helped us inaugurate our new ceramics curriculum, teaching a sold-out pottery wheel boot camp in April and offering regular open studios and Youth Program workshops throughout the summer season. In May, he joined us in the public dedication of The Sardeson and opening of Roland's Loft, the new studio apartment to which he donated some of his signature prairie ceramic tiles. And just two days before he passed away in August, he was in our offices eagerly discussing plans to enhance our pottery curriculum. We savor our memories of Bruce’s and Roland’s larger-than-life personalities, and treasure the innumerable gifts they gave us. If you’d like to help us maintain The Sardeson Studio and pottery program, donations can be made on our website; by check to Shake Rag Alley, 18 Shake Rag St., Mineral Point, WI 53565; or by calling 608-987-3292.

Leafy Statement

David & JoEllen Wollangk Fri, May 3 / 9am–5pm

Using copper and fold-forming techniques, you will make approximately a dozen leaf forms and forge a neck ring. The leaves will be wired to the ring and a patina will be applied. After a little buffing up on the leaf spines to get a bit of glitz on the piece, you will likely need to spray it with lacquer after you get home as the patina takes a bit of time. Class size 8. 19R123C-B / Tuition $105 / Materials Fee $20

Classic Copper Etching

Deborah Donaghue Fri, May 3 / 9am–5pm

Acid etching copper yields endless possibilities with impressive results. The materials needed are fairly inexpensive, and you may already have some of them at home. Acid etching metals allows you to create beautiful designs in relief. If you can stamp it, draw it, or write it, you can etch it! We will be using ferric chloride as our acid, and will try a variety of resists to make our designs. Class size 10. 19R123J-B / Tuition $110 / Materials Fee $5

Shawl Pins

Cheryl Smeja Fri, May 3 / 9am–4pm

Leslie Perrino Sat, May 4 / 9am–4pm

Learn to make three styles of shawl pins using heavygauge copper or bronze wire: a stick pin, where the pin stem is separate from a closed design; a penannular, where the pin stem is connected to an open circle; and a fibula, which is made like a safety pin. Techniques used are forming and forging wire, finishing wire ends, wire wrapping to add elements or stabilize a design, adding texture, and finishing and adding patina. Class size 12.

Learn to make a simple bezel-set pendant for an oval or round cabochon (domed/non-faceted) stone in sterling silver. We will cover how to make a full bezel cup and attach a wire bail. Measuring, fitting, soldering, filing, and finishing will be covered. Class size 8.

JEWELRY BOOT CAMP Continued

Making Glass Beads Julie Lukosaitis Sat, May 4 / 9am–4:30pm

Lampwork (glass bead making) is an ancient art. All beads are made in the small flame of a torch. You will learn the basics of hot head torch set up and safety, heat control, and techniques for different design styles. Round beads will be made first. You’ll pull glass stringers for design and details, making dots, scrolls, and swirls on your own beads. You’ll be the artist choosing your colors and designs. This class is full of interesting skills: making different bead shapes, using metals, and making a head pin for bead assembly into wearable and functional items. Class size 7. 19R124L-B / Tuition $135 / Materials Fee $15

Intro to Precious Metal Clay Sherry Viktora Sat, May 4 / 9am–5pm

Learn how to make beautiful fine silver jewelry from soft, workable “clay-like” silver. Precious Metal Clay is a safe, non-toxic material made of tiny silver particles embedded in an organic clay/water base. In this one-day class you will learn all about PMC — how to form, refine, fire, and finish jewelry pieces using the clay, paste, and a syringe. You will make a pendant with a rollover bail and either a stone or dichroic glass cabochon, and gain the knowledge to continue creating beautiful jewelry at home with just a few basic tools and a small hand-held butane torch. Your pieces will be fired in a kiln during class, but Sherry will teach you how to torch-fire your pieces at home. Class size 8. 19R124N-B / Tuition $105 / Materials Fee $37 (payable to instructor at class time)

Metal Morphosis — Fusing Silver

Creating Elegant Wire-Woven Jewelry

Eva Sherman Fri, Sep 6 / 9am–5pm

Create dramatically textured jewelry by fusing sterling silver scraps to a sterling silver base. Fusing is achieved, without the use of solder, by heating two pieces of metal that are touching to their melting point, resulting in the two pieces joining (fusing) into one piece. In addition, learning to fuse silver without melting is a huge cost and time saver. Students may create as many finished pieces as time allows, but concentration will be on mastering the technique and experimentation. Students may bring their own 20 and 24 ga sterling silver sheet, or purchase from the instructor. Previous metal working experience recommended. Class size 12. Registration deadline Aug 26. 19R249J / Tuition $130 / Materials Fee $30

Akasha is the Sanskrit word for spirit, but more directly, it means the basis and essence of all things in the material world. Spirit dolls are art objects that are easy to create from recycled materials. These spirit dolls were initially created as a way work through grief and trauma. The ritualized deconstruction of the garments and repetitive wrapping works as both art technique and meditative process. The finished dolls become the embodiment of the spirit of memory and can be used as a vehicle to transfigure sadness. These dolls are easy to create with simple household materials. Hand Lettering for Chalkboards and More Evy Thuli Fri, Aug 23 / 9am–4pm

Lettering is a form of voice … a way of expression. Let it speak the things you want to say. In general, most people see words and read sentences to derive meaning. In art, we see beautiful shapes and curves with forms of beauty. When you create beautiful lettering, it captures the attention of your audience. Andrea Matus deMeng Thu–Sun, May 16–19 / 9am–4pm

The mask permits us to explore parts of ourselves that might not be readily accepted in everyday society. A simple bit of costuming over your face and inwardly you feel a transformation. It seemed appropriate, then, to enshrine these alter egos in altars as a method for displaying those hidden parts of ourselves that lie just beneath the surface. During our time together we’ll explore the possibilities for preparing the wood for collage as we incorporate many techniques, mediums, textures, and materials into our process. We’ll begin transforming the plain mask into something opulent and mysterious and discuss how to use materials to overcome challenges in composition, unify elements, contend with our inner critic, and finally reveal your own alter ego. Stacked Found Object Lamp Dee Hooks Sat, Jun 15 / 9am–4pm

Over the years I have acquired many interesting discarded goodies, but I have to admit that some of the most interesting were musical instruments. One thing I have noticed about musical instruments is that the old life never really leaves them. The brass, the mahogany, and ivory, though marked, still have a voice … though perhaps it is not a voice that can be heard … but rather seen. In this class, you will bring old discarded instruments, and we will retune them so that they speak as a visual art form. Using the process of assemblage you will alter and/or combine broken violins, piano keys, trumpets, etc., and give them a new beginning as a shrine or sculpture. Music to your eyes. Class size 16. Registration deadline May 27.

Learn how to build a table lamp using stacked found objects starting with the basics of lamp construction and wiring and then customizing using stackable found objects such as toys, hardware, and other items. To top off each creation, instruction will be given on how to turn common items such as colanders and baskets into lamp shades, or how to embellish ready-made shades. Basic lamp components will be provided and some found objects will be available. Students may bring items they wish to use; be sure found objects you bring have a 3/8” or larger hole. Class size 8. Over the course of three intensive days, we will delve into the meanings found objects bring to assemblages. We will discuss the process of collection and the power of the souvenir as we go out in the field to scout out fantastic objects to use in our work at thrift stores, flea markets, and antique shops. In the classroom we will cover basic assemblage techniques and students will build box assemblages from objects they bring to the classroom and/or unearth in the field. Attendees will work on finding their own voice in art making and discovering what drives the sculptures they create. Some basic experience in creating assemblages is helpful, but NOT required. Everyone will be working with harmony, value, differences, and the relationships of design elements, each pulling from their own feelings and experiences of interconnectedness to mind, body, spirit. Emphasis on emotions with the use of color will be our focus. As we get older we grow self-conscious and judgmental, believing that art is not good unless it’s realistically recognizable. Collage, design, and mixed media offer up a playful experimental atmosphere that is safe for all to find a deeper meaning to the art-making process. Students’ collage works will emerge and evolve on watercolor paper, fused using the heat and tack iron method. Class size 15. Registration deadline Sep 30. 19R284L / Tuition $360 / Materials Fee $20

Every face contains a story that is written in its features, lines, and expressions. Where do those features come from?

Can they be traced back to that character’s lineage? Students will choose an intention for the face they will create. While we will not be creating exact replicas of real people, we will be incorporating the essence of each story into the faces we create. An important part of this is the memorabilia you will choose to attach to each sculpture. Come ready to remember, to explore, and to create! Class size 12. Registration deadline May 27. 19R159J / Tuition $240 / Materials Fee $15-$20 for polymer clay (payable to instructor at class time)

Moku Hanga, An Intro to Japanese Woodblock Printing Alfred Stark Fri–Sun, Sep 27–29 / 9am–4pm

Moku Hanga, meaning “wood print,” is a simple, centuries-old Japanese technique employing water-based ink, basic carving and rubbing tools, beautiful Japanese paper, and fine-grained wood. Many Western printmaking methods involve complex printing presses, oil-based inks, and toxic solvents. By contrast, Moku Hanga utilizes only a few simple tools, a small work space, and is entirely water-based. Alfred will teach you to hand-carve and print your unique drawing from fine-grained Shina Plywood onto beautiful Japanese paper, a skill you can continue to use to make prints for many years. No experience necessary. You are encouraged to bring photos or drawings you can use in creating your print. Class size 8. 19R270L-P / Tuition $310 / Materials Fee $25

Easy Linocut Registration with Tiles

Judy Sutcliffe Fri, Sep 27 / 9am–4pm

Looking for an easy method of registration for unmounted linocuts? Judy will show you how she hand-prints linocuts using floor tiles and carpet tape. It’s a surprisingly easy and accurate registration method for any size linocut but especially for smaller 4”x6” and 6”x8” sizes. Carve a quick 4”x6” linocut during class and proceed through the steps of working with this unusual and very handy process. You’ll take home a registration set up ready to go. Class size 8.

Learn how to silkscreen! In this workshop, you will be able to create your own greeting cards using a 12”x18” silk screen and a squeegee. Carole will show you how to make a simple screen print from a hand-cut stencil. Once you get set up, making multiple prints is a breeze! Bring bold, graphic images to work from. All materials provided as well as use of Shake Rag Alley’s screen printing frames and tools. Class size 10. 19R270N-P / Tuition $110 / Materials Fee $20

Carborundum Collagraphs Philip Hartigan Sat, Sep 28 / 9am–4pm

Make densely textured prints by gluing thin materials plus carborundum (silicon carbide) to sheets of plexiglass or matboard. Resulting prints have the rich contrasts of intaglio etchings, but using much less expensive materials. Try this intriguing printmaking medium with Philip’s help, and take home some exciting and unusual prints. Class size 8. 19R271E-P / Tuition $110 / Materials Fee $15

19R270LB-P / Tuition $110 / Materials Fee $5

Discover how you can create unique, painterly prints in a matter of hours using many of the same techniques used in watercolor and oil painting. All levels welcome. Philip will bring materials for printmaking and his portable press. You will be using Akua soy-based inks in class that clean up with water. Memoir and Personal Essay – Patricia Ann McNair Our lives are filled with exciting moments and ordinary ones, good times and trying times, bits and pieces that make us who we are now. During this intensive three-day workshop, we will mine our memories and experiences in order to render our memoirs and short personal essays. Our own stories will be our foundation, and we will learn elements of the craft of writing and effective ways of capturing these moments on the page. We will read from published models and essays. We will write each day. We will leave with work-in-progress and creative paths to pursue after the workshop. Whether your goal is publication or preservation, this workshop is for you. Open to all levels of skill and experience.

Short Story — Christine Rice Short stories are the lifeblood of thousands of literary journals; editors are on a constant hunt for beautifully crafted work. Are your short stories ready? If not, or if you are simply on a lifelong journey of discovery and learning, this workshop is for you. Each session will employ a range of exercises and activities to help you craft a powerful short story. We will focus on elements of scene including the “right” point of view, character development, dialogue, sense of place, and story movement. You will learn how to incorporate basic storytelling principles, forms, and techniques into your writing. This class will be useful for writers at any level of experience who wish to develop new or ongoing material.

New Novel Pages – Shawn Shifflett Been thinking of finally starting that novel? Already working on it, but need a creative nudge? Whether you are on page one or page 201 of your own novel, New Novel Pages will inspire and guide you along the way, providing strategies to keep the story dramatically moving forward. During this three-day workshop, we will explore the craft of writing a novel: structure, plot development, setting, dialogue, character interaction, placement and shaping of chapters, and much more. Time will be reserved for generating new material, as well as for reading our work out loud to further develop our sense of audience. Writers with novels at different stages of completion, as well as those who just need a creative nudge to get started, are welcome.

SHAKE RAG ALLEY LODGING

Lodging at Shake Rag Alley — in The Sardeson building downtown and at the Coach House on the Shake Rag Alley campus — is charming and full of art by Mineral Point and nationally known artists. Your stay in one of our guest rooms supports our arts and crafts educational programming and the historic preservation of our buildings and grounds. Check the website www.MineralPointLodging.com for a visual tour of our establishment, and don’t forget: Students taking Shake Rag Alley workshops are eligible for a 10% discount. (When making an online lodging reservation, please indicate that you are a student in the “Why are you visiting?” section.)

Staying at The Sardeson, 223 Commerce St.: Roland’s Loft and The Tuckpoint

The brick and stone Sardeson building was built in the commercial vernacular as an addition to the Globe Hotel in 1877. The building has undergone extensive renovations since 2016, when Mineral Point potter and stonemason Roland Sardeson bequeathed the building to Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts for use as lodging rooms, a pottery studio, and a gallery space. The creative community of Mineral Point awaits right outside your door, which is just a five-minute walk from the Shake Rag Alley campus.

Roland’s Loft:

The second-floor studio apartment at 223 Commerce St. was lovingly decorated and dedicated as Roland's Loft in May 2018 and features modern amenities and historical touches befitting Roland Sardeson's unique spirit. Guests will enjoy a queen-sized bed, writing desk made of refurbished Mineral Point Opera House floorboards, kitchenette with coffeemaker, fridge, and microwave, and high-speed wireless Internet. The renovation of Roland’s Loft was made possible thanks to local businesses, contractors, and volunteers who contributed time, materials, and expertise to the project, and the financial support of donors and a grant from the Mineral Point Community Foundation.

The Tuckpoint:

The stone-walled Tuckpoint at 223 Commerce St. (rear) offers a large living room/ dining room with kitchen facilities, bedroom with a queen bed, bathroom with tub and shower stall, garden patio, private parking, laundry facilities, and high-speed wireless Internet. Everything at the Tuckpoint is historical, artistic, or just plain whimsical — like the iron arrow through a support post, recycled scythe handle railings, or fossils embedded in brick walls. Stained glass adorns doors and walls.

Art abounds, and guests will find something fascinating to look at and ponder in each corner of the comfortable, accommodating rooms. At the Tuckpoint, you’re immersed in art and history.
