POTTERY PROGRAM
New Pottery Program at Shake Rag Alley! Shake Rag Alley is now able to add Pottery workshops to the curriculum! Workshops will be taught by nationally known Mineral Point artist Bruce Howdle who has recently retired from teaching at UW-Platteville. Bruce has been a ceramic sculptor in Mineral Point WI since finishing an MFA at Arizona State University in 1976. He has produced and installed major works of freestanding or wall-mounted sculpture in both indoor and outdoor settings in several states. For the last 15 years he has installed one to six commissions a year.
Pottery workshops will be held in the Sardeson Studio at 223 Commerce Street, adjacent to Bruce’s gallery and working studio. Classes will include firing of work in Bruce’s kilns. In 2018 there will be two different workshops offered — one week-long Pottery Wheel Throwing workshop and three sections of a two weekend long Hand Building workshop. Interspersed between these classes will be Open Studio/Lab weekends for those who would like to use the equipment and are able work on their own.
Pottery Wheel Throwing Boot Camp
Learn to throw coffee mugs, noodle bowls, teapots — just about anything — on a potters wheel. Bruce Howdle, nationally known ceramic artist, will teach you the basics and keep you inspired as your skill levels rise. In this five-day boot camp you will learn to throw on an electric or kick wheel, explore basic skills, build your throwing height, and practicepractice-practice. At the end of Boot Camp, Bruce will bisque fire your completed pieces so you can return to glaze them during a later Open Studio/Lab weekend. Bruce will then do the final firing and you can arrange with Bruce to pick up the finished work. Boot Camp tuition includes use of classroom equipment, tools, stains, glazes, firing, and 25 lbs of clay plus one Open Studio return visit for glazing (see Schedule of Open Studio dates). More clay may be purchased from Bruce as needed. Class size 8. Tuition $450/ Materials Fee $35 Wed–Sun / Wed–Sat 9am–4pm, Sun 9am–noon Apr 4–8 / 18A400 / Registration deadline Mar 26

Hand Built Stoneware Projects (Two Weekends)
Join nationally known ceramic artist Bruce Howdle and learn to hand build stoneware clay projects such as large platters with animal drawings, bas relief figures and faces, dimensional sculpture and more. Start on Friday evening with clay and instruction and work as late as you wish. Through the weekend you’ll work alongside Bruce, getting the clay and design formed and trimmed. Your piece will dry over the next week, and Bruce will do the first (bisque) firing. Return on the second weekend to glaze your pieces and make more to be fired later and glazed during one of the Open Studio/Lab weekends (see Schedule of Open Studio dates). Bruce will do the final high temperature firing of glazed pieces and make arrangements for you to pick up your completed stoneware. Materials fee includes 25 lbs of clay (more available for purchase from Bruce), plus kiln firings and use of stains, glazes, and tools. Class size 8.
Want to practice your pottery skills and/or work on your own projects? Roland Sardeson
Roland Sardeson passed away on November 12th, 2016. Roland was a beloved figure in the community, providing much delight with his parade antics, his remarkable variety of stage characterizations, his skydiving exploits, his stonemason and pottery creative work, and his predilection for appearing in unusual costumes in offbeat places. He was generous with his time when alive, and at his passing, graced the community with generous bequests. His gift of his building at 223 Commerce Street to Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts has made the addition of a ceramics program possible, plus lodging facilities in what was Roland’s long-time apartment, as well as the unique Tuckpoint Suite, and a small retail storefront rental. Our fond memories of Roland are strengthened by our sincere gratitude of this wonderful gift. If you’d like to donate to help us prepare the building for Shake Rag classes, please send funds to 18 Shake Rag Street or call 608-987-3292.

You will be making a traditional openwork pattern out of sturdy, washable 100% cotton yarn. Swedish Lace is known for its decorative geometric qualities that contrast repeating areas of solid cloth with sections of windowpane. It’s an attractive and stable fabric well suited to enhancing your dining room table. Finishing options will be discussed. Materials fee includes enough yarn to make a 5 foot runner plus your sample weaving.Class size 6. Registration deadline May 7.
Through hands-on experience, acquire the skills to set up a 4-harness tabletop loom and get weaving! On the first day, after instruction, you will practice winding the warp and dressing the loom (threading the heddles and winding the warp onto the loom). Then you’ll learn to read a draft (pattern) and make a sampler of plain (tabby) weave and an assortment of twill weaves. On day two, you’ll weave a full-length scarf of smooth and lightly lustrous 50/50 mercerized cotton and bamboo yarns. Finishing options will be discussed. Each student will have a loom to work on. (Bring your own or use one of ours!) Sleek, soft, and sustainable bamboo rayon and mercerized cotton yarns, approximately ‘fingering’ sized, will be provided. Class size 6. Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a safe non-toxic material made of tiny silver particles embedded in an organic clay/water base. In this one day class you will learn all about PMC — how to form, refine, fire and finish jewelry pieces using the clay, paste and a syringe. You will go home with one or more unique pieces of .999 pure silver jewelry, plus the knowledge to continue creating beautiful jewelry at home with just a few basic tools and a small hand held butane torch. Your pieces will be fired in a kiln in class, but Sherry will teach you how to torch fire your pieces at home. Class size 8.
Make a Viking Knit bracelet out of copper wire. Viking knit is an ancient form of circular wire weaving that has been adapted to make beautiful jewelry, often enhanced with beads. Perfect for beginners, Viking Knit can be a forgiving technique because you do not have to do perfect work. There is a very comforting “rhythm” to this technique akin to repetitive crafts like knitting, tatting and crochet. You’ll finish off your bracelet with copper bead caps and a toggle, and add a feature bead if you like. You will go home with some tools so you can make more on your own. Class size 8.

The Poison Ring
Richard Salley Sat, Jul 21 / 9am–4pm
As most know, poison rings have a type of container usually hidden under a bezel or a gemstone, a container for holding poison or another substance. Such discreet — not to mention fashionable — means of hiding fatal liquids has inspired countless stories of assassins and jealous vengeful spouses. But the secret of poison rings is that it has never really been proven that they were used to actually poison people. They came from India and the Far East by way of the Holy Relic trade in the Middle ages and really, the containers were used as...containers. People treated them as lockets. In a time when robbery was prevalent, these rings provided the ultimate safe for cherished keepsakes. Learn to make one of these fabulous rings and see what kind of uses you can find for it... whether nefarious or benign! Class size 12. Registration deadline Jul 9.

ART ADVENTURE Continued
Box Full of Dreams: Mixed Media Assemblage Workshop
Lorraine Reynolds Thu, Aug 23 / 9am–5pm
Joseph Cornell is known for his special brand of visual poetry, brought to life in what he called the Box Construction. Cornell created little stories inside “shadow boxes” - voyages of the imagination forged by assembling seemingly disparate and random objects into dreamlike miniature tableaus. This class builds on the idea of the Cornell box. We will build our own “memory boxes” – poetic little “theatre boxes” that evoke memories contained within. We will assemblage found objects and elevate them to a place of reverence – of redemption. This is a great opportunity to use found objects you have been collecting in a unique work of art that speaks from your heart. You will learn basic assemblage techniques: how to collect, arrange, edit and attach found objects. We will also cover basic collage techniques, using transparencies and photo transfers. Class size 14. 18C242A / Tuition $135
Nesting Necklace
Pam Hawkins Thu, Aug 23 / 9am–5pm
If you like multiple wire and cold connection techniques, playing with Ice Resin and personalization then you will love this class! We will create a Wire Nest focal with wire, molding compound, Ice Resin, and my images or yours. Using ThermaClear sheeting we will “blow” the trinket dome, set our layers of metal-Ice Resin pages and our dome to create a trinket dome connector. Next we will explore ways to make a nest connector component. We will set eyelets and create the rest of the necklace components with wire loops and beads. Finally we will add Vintaj® Patinas to coordinate with our images and then begin construction. It will be a jam packed day of constant exploration, creativity and design concepts. Class size 12. 18C244A / Tuition $110 / Materials Fee $40
Textured Mixed Media Tom Cabezas Thu, Aug 23 / 9am–4pm
Create a unique painted art piece rich in texture, with deep layers of color, and sophisticated design. Tom will share some great ideas and techniques for using acrylic paints along with unusual textured compounds, a variety of papers, and some offbeat found objects. As a design teacher, Tom will share his
composition principles, design ideas, and new ways to use your art materials to add heightened impact to your mixed media creations. Bring your own acrylic and watercolor paints and brushes along with any special handmade papers, photos, plant materials, and odds and ends you might like to incorporate in your art piece. Class size 8. 18C246A / Tuition $110 / Materials Fee $10
Upcycle a Chocolate Bar Into a Travel Notebook! Judy Sutcliffe Thu, Aug 23 / 9am–4pm
Yes, you will take a lovely Ghirardelli chocolate bar and convert its slim cardboard casing into a very useful Traveler’s Notebook, very similar to expensive leather ones made by Midori and Faux-Midori craftsmen. You’ll carefully line the chocolate bar box, neatly trim edges, poke holes with an awl, apply strategically strung elastics and then make several different types of insert booklets, all of which can be added magically with the elastic band bindings. These include writing paper inserts, sketch pad inserts, compartments for tickets and stamps and so forth, and any other inserts you can dream up. These are great gifts. You’ll be able to make more than one in the time allotted. Plus, you get to eat the chocolate. Class size 12. 18C248A / Tuition $105
Boho Dangle Necklace Sharon Stauffer Thu, Aug 23 / 1–4pm
Create a dangle necklace with a “boho” vibe. Learn to make a couple of mixed media components using unusual jewelry materials like craft foam and vinyl tubing, then combine these with beads, wire, waxed linen and found objects to make dangles that are hung on a ball chain. Keep it simple with just a few dangles…or, for a real statement look, jazz it up with as many dangles as you can complete. Dangles can also be used to make earrings. This is a good beginner project (no previous jewelry experience required) but can be just as much fun for a more experienced jewelry maker. Class size 8. 18C249A / Tuition $55 / Materials Fee $5

Prospero’s Books Andrea Matus deMeng Thu–Sun, May 17–20 / 9am–4pm
Imagine you stumble across a beautiful box and open it to discover a treasure trove of unusual and otherworldly books. In this book making extravaganza we’ll create our own Mystical Box to house books we’ve altered, bound, painted and assemblaged. We’ll use several distinct book binding techniques - the Mixed Coptic Binding, the Long Stitch and my very own “the Canadian”. Mixed Coptic bookbinding allows us to sew together page-like objects - wood, mica, paper, plastic, metal, fabric and much more. A mixed media artist’s dream come true! We’ll use paint, collage and assemblage to alter a box for housing your newly created books. Class size 16. Registration deadline May 7. 18A540 / Tuition $550 / Materials Fee $45
Tiny Shriney Sideshows Michael deMeng Thu, May 31 / 9am–4pm
I have to admit I’ve made my share of shriney structures in my day, and I have created them from a variety of unusual items ranging from license plates to stoves to shoes. This class will involve some serious downsizing. In this class you’ll be creating a tiny sideshow stage featuring unusual character of your own invention. It all starts with small discarded toys, dolls, figurines and other found objects of your choosing. Using the process of assemblage, painting and collage, you’ll bring your fantastic freaks to life. Of course, these extraordinary performers will need a place to show off their unusual talents, so you will also construct a stage or shrine to house your little oddity. Class size 16. Registration deadline May 21. 18A600 / Tuition $150
Michael deMeng Fri–Sun, Jun 1–3 / 9am–4pm
In Slavic legend, there is a tale of an old witch, Baba Yaga, mostly a troublemaker, who rides in a flying mortar, using her pestle as the rudder. It is said she lives in a strange cabin in the forest…surrounded by a fence made of bones, capped by skulls. The house itself is also grimly unusual… perched upon giant chicken legs…sometimes one… sometimes two. This folktale seems a great source for a class…. we will create a fantastical birdhouse perched on legs…doll legs, rubber chicken legs, or a mere pedestal. We will play with found objects and the process of assemblage. Then of course there is the painting where all the disparate objects magically come together. But wait that’s not all…. for folks who want to play with a bit of puppetry I’ll show how to add flapping wings to the haggish home! Class size 16. Registration deadline May 21. 18A605 / Tuition $450

POLYMER CLAY & DOLL ART Polymer Clay Leprechauns, Elves and Gnomes
Maureen Carlson Sat, Aug 4 / 9am–5:30pm
Leprechauns, Elves and Gnomes, Oh My!
With polymer clay, a bit of wire, a strip of aluminum foil, a dab of paint, a found rock or two and your imagination, create a whimsical character — a Leprechaun, Elf or Gnome, that is sure to bring a smile, and, just perhaps, a story or two along with it! Maureen has been creating clay characters for 40 years, so knows lots of tips and tricks for making what looks like a difficult process become one that even beginners can accomplish. You will use molds to create the faces and hands, but you’ll also learn how to tweak the molds so each creation is one-of-a-kind. For those unfamiliar with polymer clay, it is a man-made plastic clay that becomes permanent when cured in an oven. Once cured, it is still slightly flexible, but quite strong. Class size 12. Registration deadline Jul 23. 18C215 / Tuition $110/ Materials Fee $15 (payable to instructor at class time)
Polymer Clay Fairies Maureen Carlson Sun, Aug 5 / 9:30am–5pm Fairies Here and There and Everywhere!
These sweet, whimsical fairies reflect the joy and humor that abounds in childhood tales. Bring this magic into reality with a bit of
polymer clay and some tips and tricks from Maureen. Polymer clay is a bit like firm play dough. But there the similarity ends. When baked, these polymer clay characters become strong enough to be permanent visitors to your bookshelf, kitchen cupboard, fairy garden or collector cabinet (though fairies need to be close enough to the window to catch a glimpse of the bluebirds flying by or the lilacs in full bloom. They ARE fairies, after all!) Since sweet faces are harder to create than craggy ones, this class is AFTER the Saturday Elves and Gnomes class. These classes complement each other, so sign up for both and build your skills. Class size 12. Registration deadline Jul 23. 18C218 / Tuition $110 / Materials Fee $10 (payable to instructor at class time)
Create a Figurative Sculpture Duo
Kate Church Sun–Fri, Sep 30–Oct 5 Welcome Dinner, Sun 6pm Class Time Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm

Starting with a drawing you will design and make a fabric pattern, then use wire to build the form that will animate your piece. Use paint, found objects, fabrics, or collage to embellish your work of art. In the second part of the class you will create a figure to ride or lead or perhaps dance ... with your fantasy critter. Kate will have patterns available if you feel you are not ready to design your own. Get ready for an extraordinary, fun, and inspiring ride! Class size 12. On the Horizon — Imposing Order in an Abstract Painting
Jacqueline Sullivan Sat–Sun, Sep 15–16 / 9am–4pm
Imposing order in a chaotic abstract work can often be difficult. Remembering the rule of thirds is always helpful. Within that rule, several techniques can be used to define a horizon line. Whether low or high, a horizon line helps to convey a sense of atmosphere and place in abstract works. You’ll create a painting based on a horizon line, working with Golden fluid acrylics to build your painting with thin glazes of color. You’ll then learn some markmaking techniques, using high flow acrylics and fine line applicator tools to define the horizon line. We may also explore Pan Pastels and charcoal marks, great tools for adding a complimentary color or emphasizing tonality. You will receive a lot of individual attention and leave with a painting that is truly your own expression. Class size 12. Registration deadline Sep 4. 18C326 / Tuition $240 / Materials Fee $15

Moku Hanga, An Intro to Japanese Woodblock Printing Fri–Sun, Sep 28–30 / 9am–4pm
Alfred Stark
Moku Hanga, meaning “wood print,” is a simple, centuries old Japanese technique employing water-based ink, basic carving and rubbing tools, beautiful Japanese paper, and fine-grained wood. Many Western printmaking methods involve complex printing presses, oil-based inks and toxic solvents. By contrast, Moku Hanga utilizes only a few simple tools, a small work space, and is entirely water based. Alfred will teach you to hand carve and print your unique drawing from fine-grained Shina Plywood onto beautiful Japanese paper, a skill you can continue to use to make prints for many years. No experience necessary. You are encouraged to bring photos or drawings you can use in creating your print. Class size 8. 18C340P / Tuition $300/ Materials Fee $25

Workshop Descriptions:
Memoir — Patricia Ann McNair
Our lives are filled with exciting moments and ordinary ones, good times and trying times, bits and pieces that make us who we are now. During this intensive three-day workshop, we will mine our memories and experiences in order to render our memoirs. Our own stories will be our foundation, and we will learn elements of the craft of writing and effective ways of capturing these moments on the page. We will read from published models and essays, we will write each day. We will leave with work-inprogress and pathways to pursue after the workshop. Whether your goal is publication or preservation, this workshop is for you. Open to all levels of skill and experience.
Short Story — Christine Rice Short stories are the lifeblood of thousands of literary journals; editors are on a constant hunt for beautifully-crafted work. Are your short stories ready? If not, or if you are simply on a lifelong journey of discovery and learning, this workshop is for you. Each session will employ a range of exercises and activities to help you craft a powerful short story. We will focus on elements of scene including the 'right' point of view, character development, dialogue, sense of place, and story movement. You will learn how to incorporate basic storytelling principles, forms, and techniques into your writing. This class will be useful for writers at any level of experience who wish to develop new or ongoing material. We will read from published models and write each day.
Novel — Shawn Shiflett The novel form has been fondly described as the “pachyderm” of prose. How does one begin to tackle such a huge project and

keep the story dramatically moving forward from beginning to end? During this three-day workshop, we will explore the craft of writing a novel — structure, plot development, setting, dialogue, character interaction, placement and shaping of chapters, and much more. Time will be put aside each class for generating new material, as well as for reading our work out loud in order to further develop our sense of audience. Writers with novels at different stages of completion, as well as those who just need a creative nudge to get started, are welcome.
