New Arrivals, New Inspirations and Plenty of
A note from the President...
Spring has arrived, and as we prepare for a busy season, we are energized by the opportunity to reimagine our public programs and activities. This year, we are focused on reaching more children, more families and more groups with meaningful, entertaining experiences in nature, on the farm and with history. During the next few months, Shaker Village will transition its daily programming from a traditional demonstration-based interpretation of Shaker history to an engaging participatory model that provides a dynamic landscape for active exploration and learning. The new model will blend hospitality, preservation and conservation with a reimagined guest experience that sparks a greater depth of understanding of the entire site. In short, guests can expect more programs and activities presented in fun and approachable ways. I hope that you will make time this spring to explore our 3,000 acres of discovery in the spirit of the Kentucky Shakers!

An Old Friend
Revived The Trustees’ Office (1839) has served as a beacon of Shaker hospitality since its opening on April 1, 1841. The building was operated, in part, as an inn where guests were warmly accommodated and fed by Shaker sisters in the office’s guest and dining rooms. This year, Shaker Village will complete a two year, $300,000 restoration and refurbishment project of the beloved building. Phase I of the project began in 2012 with the restoration of the building’s exterior, including 54 sets of shutters, 65 window sashes, weatherboards, eaves, soffits, rakes, door jams, moldings and entryway.
Phase II included the refurbishment of interior spaces, including the Inn front desk, eight guest rooms, dining rooms, retail space and staircases. Approximately 6,400 square feet of flooring was refinished, and a softer color palette freshened all walls and moldings. Guest rooms were finished with comfortable, Shaker-inspired furnishings, blackout shades, enhanced lighting and accessories. Guest room refurbishments were funded by contributed gifts totaling $130,000. The remainder of the work was funded by operating revenue and Kentucky’s Historic Preservation Tax Credit program. The project will be completed this summer, with major repairs to the entryway steps of the building’s facade. Donor support is critical to the successful completion of all restoration projects. Shaker Village has long been known as a “moment frozen in time.” The site’s original 1960s interpretation plan centered on sharing the daily life of the Shakers in the 1850s, a time when the community flourished. In fact, the Shaker experience at Pleasant Hill was not limited to one singular moment in time. They were an inventive, progressive community and over the years, their technology, architecture, clothing, land use and perspectives evolved alongside the rest of the world.
This season, Shaker Village has expanded its interpretation program to share a more complete story of the site’s 220year history. Demonstrations, music and tours will continue, but guests will also have an opportunity to rediscover the compelling legacies of the Shakers in a new light. Staff will share stories in new and approachable ways, exploring the transforming spirit of the Kentuckians that planned, built and sustained this village for more than 100 years.
