The Annual Plant Sale has been supplying Community members and the public with locally-grown, high-quality plants and trees since 2011. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) strives to be a good neighbor and a good steward of the earth. The Annual Plant Sale provides the SMSC with a great opportunity to share this message with the community. The plants are grown through environmentally sustainable practices to ensure respect and protection of Unci Maka (Grandmother Earth). The Plant Sale is a collaboration between SMSC enterprises and departments, including Wozupi Tribal Gardens, SMSC Organics Recycling Facility, and the Property Services Department.

Wozupi Tribal Gardens is a certified organic farm committed to growing food in a way that nourishes the earth, the community, and people’s minds and bodies. They opened in 2010 and are owned and operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, a federally recognized, sovereign Indian tribe, located southwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Wozupi means “garden” in the Dakota language.

HERBS LEMON BALM

Perennial Days to Maturity: 70

In the mint family. Leaves can be used in a tea for a calming effect. Helps with anxiety, sleep problems, and restlessness. THYME

Evergreen herb used to season meat, mostly poultry or pork. Also used in sauces, and even baths. Europeans place it under their pillows to aid with sleep and ward off nightmares. CHIVES

Most of the mints we use today, including spearmint, came to North America with the colonists. They used mint teas medicinally for headaches, indigestion, and to help them sleep. Mint is also an excellent culinary addition and makes a great tea for the pure pleasure of it. PEPPERMINT

This variety is only true to type through propagation, and is excellent for culinary or medicinal use. We recommend planting in containers to prevent these vigorous plants from becoming invasive. 6

Feverfew is used to treat colds and the flu. It is also widely used to treat migraines, stomach and intestinal gas, and body aches. HYSSOP

Hyssop is a mild antiviral and expectorant herb used to treat the common cold. It is also used to break up mucus build-up in the respiratory system. SPILANTHES

Spilanthes is used to treat colds and the flu. It’s also widely used to treat things like chronic strep and sore throats. VALERIAN

Leaves and roots can be used to aid with sleep and anxiety. Roots are more potent than the leaves. Produces flowers in second year. ARNICA

Annual Days to Maturity: 60

Native to the western states of North America and up into British Columbia, this perennial herb has bright, sunny yellow flowers. It’s petals radiate from a large center much like a daisy, and are borne on a single stem with alternate leaves that are long and oval and slightly hairy. In the wild, it grows in meadows and hillsides where moisture is plentiful and where it spreads through rhizomes. CALENDULA-ORANGE Annual Days to Maturity: 55

Flowers are a premier antiseptic and healing agent when made into a salve, tincture, or masticated and applied to a wound. YARROW

Leeks are related to onions and are used similarly, but can be left in the ground and harvested well into winter. To be tender, the stalks must be under 6-8 inches of soil by the time the plant is mature.

Attractive reddish-bronze onions are good-sized and sweet; an intermediate day type. A great variety for fresh eating, as it is not too hot-tasting. Keeps well in storage and a good overall red type. 8

Tall, upright, blue-green leaves, and thick, cylindrical white stems. Cook lightly, braise whole, or use chopped and raw.

Harvested early in the summer for fresh eating.

Torpedo onions can be harvested young and eaten raw due to their sweetness. They can also be sautéed for marinades, dressings and grilled meats.

Jersey Knight is a very vigorous performer, producing profuse spears. The spears are top-size—a full 5/8-inch in diameter— and are bright green with deep purple tips and bracts. Stunning on the dinner plate, they’re one of the easiest varieties to grow, thanks to terrific vigor that makes these plants come back stronger every year! BILKO CABBAGE Days to Maturity: 54

Butterhead. Preserved by descendents of the Civil War general George Admire, born in 1822. Deeply crinkled leaves are gracefully splashed with bronze and tastefully flavored.

JERICHO ROMAINE LETTUCE Days to Maturity: 60

Bred for desert heats and hot summers. Retains its sweetness when other heads turn bitter.

MAGENTA SUMMERCRISP LETTUCE Days to Maturity: 48

Shiny, slightly puckered, red-tinged leaves form a whorled, conical head with a crispy green heart. Good for summer salads.

RED RUSSIAN KALE Days to Maturity: 50

Stems are purple and leaves are flat, toothed, and dark green with purple veins. For salads and light cooking.

GREEN CURLY KALE Days to Maturity: 50

Loosely curled, wrinkled leaves with tender texture. Unusual aromatic sweet flavor. Use in soups, salads, pasta dishes, and so much more.

FIVE COLOR SILVERBEET SWISS CHARD Days to Maturity: 50

Also known as Rainbow Chard or Bright Lights, this Swiss chard originated in Australia. Mild, tasty, and ornamental, the stalks are vividly colored red, orange, pink, yellow, and white.

KOHLRABI Days to Maturity: 55

Kohlrabi, a member of the cabbage family, develops a turnip-like bulge in the stem, and can be used grated in salads or like a root vegetable in soups. It has been grown in Europe since the 16th century. GROUND CHERRY Days to Maturity: 70

Ground cherries are related to tomatoes and look like little tomatillo fruits, but they are very sweet and eaten like berries. Low-growing, with no need to be trellised.

Unusual, oblong fruits are lemon yellow with shallow white sutures. The flesh is white, crisp and moderately sweet when ripe.

Hale’s Jumbo Cantaloupe was developed by Japanese market gardeners in California around 1920. This cantaloupe became very popular for its excellent flavor and early harvest.

Attractive 3-pound oval fruits with sweet, juicy flesh.

SUGAR BABY WATERMELON Days to Maturity: 76

Small, ripe watermelons are almost black. Great flavor and tough rinds resist cracking.

Ripe melons seldom crack and have a tough rind, making them ideal for shipping. Good shelf life even when harvested ripe. Widely adapted. Intermediate resistance to fusarium wilt races 0-2 and powdery mildew. GOAT HORN PEPPER Days to Maturity: 60

Goat Horn produces very hot spicy peppers. This variety is very popular in China and Southeast Asia for cooking and pickling uses. The dark green fruit are traditionally eaten green but also make great chipotle if allowed to ripen to red.

PAPER LANTERN HOT PEPPER Days to Maturity: 90

It’s a “hot” new look for habanero—elongated bright red! These 3-inch by 4-inch peppers score a flaming-hot 200,000 to 300,000 Scoville. They’re ready to eat when green (70 days), but grow more succulent and nutritious if allowed to ripen to red. Tall, vigorous, semi-determinate plants set a good crop of uniform, wickedly hot red peppers every time! 14

Even after more than 70 years, this is still an extremely popular pepper. Large, pointed fruits measure 6-7 inches long and 1 1/2 inches across. The mild yellow peppers ultimately turn brilliant red. A favorite for pickling. JALAPEÑO HOT PEPPER Days to Maturity: 60

Cylindrical fruits are of the smaller, traditional size (2-2 1/2 inches) and have more checking than our hybrids. Earlier but much lower-yielding than our hybrids. Small plants. Best for early season plantings for early crops. HUNGARIAN HOT WAX Days to Maturity: 58

Unique pepper that ripens from pale green to bright yellow to red. Has a medium heat. Smooth, waxy fruit tapers to a point. Easy to stuff or peel for roasting.

Heart-shaped, thinner-walled fruits average 4 1/2–5 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide. They are moderately pungent and turn from black-green to red.

Bell peppers come in all different colors, including yellow, red, orange, and green. Best used raw or cooked in salads, savory dishes, egg burritos, stuffed, and so much more.

Medium-large, flattened globe, 8-12 ounce fruits. Color is dusky pink with dark shoulders. Multilocular interior ranges from purple to brown to green. Relatively short vines. Indeterminate.

Green Zebra is actually the result of four heirlooms bred together. It’s a beauty, with exquisite emerald green skin, dark green vertical stripes, and gently flavorful green flesh. Delicious, rich tomato flavor for salads, great salsa, and fresh pasta sauce. Good crack resistance, vine storage, and shelf life. High resistance to late blight and intermediate resistance to early blight. Indeterminate. TAXI (YELLOW TOMATO) Days to Maturity: 64

Meaty, 4-6 ounce, baseball-sized, lemon-yellow tomatoes. Smooth, blemish-free globes with a small stem scar. Attractive, sweet-flavored, and easy to grow. Concentrated early set. Compact, dark green vine. Widely adapted. Determinate. EARLY GIRL TOMATO Days to Maturity: 57

ZESTAR! APPLE TREE A wonderful, recent apple cultivar from the University of Minnesota. At last, an early apple that is crisp and juicy! Best known for its excellent sweet-tart flavor. Has a much longer storage life than other early apples. Excellent for fresh eating and cooking.

SNOW SWEET APPLE TREE Another example of the University of Minnesota’s expertise in the development of cold, hardy apple varieties. A cross between Sharon and Connell Red. Snow Sweet has a deliciously sweet, slightly tart taste. Slow to oxidize when exposed to air. Honeycrisp is a good pollinator. Above-average resistance to scab and fire blight. On a standard rootstock.

HONEYCRISP APPLE TREE An exciting apple that is exceptionally crisp and juicy. Flavor is sweet but well-balanced. Excellent storage life, up to 7 months. Has become an outstanding commercial and home orchard variety because of its explosive crispness, flavor, and storage life.

FROSTBITE APPLE TREE Frostbite produces a smaller apple with a sweet, unique, berrylike flavor. Crisp, firm texture, and juicy. Great for fresh eating, cider, or cooking. Parent to Keepsake and Sweet 16, grandparent to Honeycrisp. Bred in MN in 1936. Susceptible to cedar apple rust. For best results, plant away from cedar trees or control in spring. CHESTNUT CRABAPPLE APPLE TREE Large crabapple, 2-inch diameter, sweet and pleasant nut-like flavor. Crunchy texture for fresh eating and also great for baking and cider making. On a standard rootstock.

FREEDOM APPLE TREE The red fruit is large and good for eating, sauces, and juice. The flesh is crisp and juicy with a slight tart flavor. The fruit will keep until January in cold storage. Very vigorous and productive tree. Developed for disease resistance. Immune to apple scab and resistant to mildew, cedar-apple rust, and fireblight. Does not require fungicide sprays. 21

CONTENDER PEACH A freestone peach with bright yellow flesh. Sweet, extra-juicy fruit is an absolute delight for fresh eating, canning, baking, and freezing.

TAWARA ASIAN PEAR TREE The asian pear tree, grown mainly for its delicious fruit, has an upright oval form with glossy green foliage, which looks great all season long. White flowers in spring make way to the unusual dark tan to light brown fruit, tasting like a cross between an apple and pear. Excellent for fresh eating or canning. Asian pear cultivars are partially self-fruitful, but a better crop is set when two or more cultivars are planted together. Seckel is a good pollinator or use other European or Asian pears. SUMMERCRISP PEAR TREE Pears ripen in mid-August when still crisp and slightly green with a red blush. Fruit harvested at that time is sweet and juicy, and may be stored up to 2 months. Fruit is of a smaller size (2 1/2 - 3 1/2 inches long). Free of fire blight. Use either Parker or Patten as pollinator.

BLACKICE PLUM TREE BlackIce is a cross between a cherry plum and a conventional Japanese dessert plum, resulting in large fruit with superior winter hardiness and an early ripening date. Has been shown to be hardy and produce fruit in zone 3b. Naturally compact growth habit makes it easy to manage. Use Toka or American Plum for pollination. Height 8-12 feet. ANNE RASPBERRY BUSH Anne raspberry is a large-fruited fall bearer. Fruit holds a light yellow color and is highly productive. HERITAGE RASPBERRY BUSH This fall-bearing heirloom variety is popular among home gardeners. The fall crop is highly productive and ripens from the end of August and into October.
