Healthy for the Holidays Holidays are filled with favorite foods, family traditions, and fun. However, it can also be a busy time of year with worrying about how to stay healthy. We have many classes at Mazopiya during the month of December to help you stay on track during this holiday season. Here are some additional tips for healthy holiday cheer:
If you’re the host, make sure there are lots of delicious and healthy options like whole grains, fruits, and veggies on the table. Consider including more vegetable dishes to the table, such as snap peas with roasted eggplant dip or roasted Brussels sprouts. Eat most of your meals at home. Stock up on items that let you create delicious, filling, and nutritious meals quickly and easily.
Enjoy the party fare but don’t graze. Check out the buffet table first, then fill your plate with lots of vegetable and fruit options. Once you’ve served yourself, move away from the table and find someone to talk with.
Stick to your normal routine, and don’t skip meals to save room for later.
Scale down portions of appetizers and serving pieces—try using shot glasses for appetizers or bite-sized desserts.
Be mindful of little tastes all day long. That piece of candy offered by a coworker, the “taste test” of the cookies you just baked, or those samples at the grocery store can add up to extra calories before you even realize it. Before leaving for a party, drink water or eat a hydrating snack, such as a small serving of veggies and hummus. When you’re hydrated and not hungry, you’ll be less likely to overindulge at the get-together.
Enjoy and savor every bite. Research has shown that we feel fuller with less food when we eat mindfully.

½ cup baking soda ½ cup citric acid ¼ cup cornstarch ½ cup Epsom salt (fine) 2 tablespoons coconut oil 2-4 drops peppermint essential oil 1-2 drops red food coloring Green, red, and white sprinkles (optional)
Directions
In a bowl, combine baking soda, citric acid, corn starch, and Epsom salt and stir well. Stir in coconut oil, and fluff mixture with a fork. Put half of the mixture in one bowl and half in another. Add essential oil to both bowls and food coloring to one bowl. Stir well.

RECIPE INSTANT POT GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE What is the one ingredient that has been missing from the classic green bean casserole recipe? An Instant Pot! Now you can make this holiday favorite in a flash, just in time for your guests to start arriving. Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced (2½ cups) 1 teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons dry sherry 1 package (14-16-ounce) frozen French-cut green beans ½ cup low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth ¼ cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped ½ cup French-fried onions Directions Using sauté mode, heat oil in Instant Pot. Add mushrooms, onion powder, and salt and cook, stirring, until the mushrooms have released their liquid, or about 6 minutes. Add sherry and cook, stirring, until mostly evaporated, or about 1 minute. Stir in green beans and broth. Turn off sauté mode, and close and lock the lid and cook at high pressure for 3 minutes. Carefully release the pressure manually. Whisk cream, flour, and thyme together in a small bowl. Stir into the green bean mixture and return the Instant Pot to sauté mode. Cook, stirring, until bubbling and thickened, or about 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a serving dish and top with french-fried onions.
