October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Unfortunately, almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer. What everyone may not know is that nutrition and weight can be directly linked to cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund estimates that about 20% of all cancers diagnosed in the United States are related to body fatness, physical inactivity, excess alcohol consumption, and/or poor diet and nutrition, and therefore could be prevented. The human body is complex—and to promote the best care and aid in preventing cancer, try these simple and balanced diet and nutrition techniques that may lead to a healthier lifestyle:
Think simple.
Keep diet and nutrition simple by using clean ingredients and recipes that feature pure or minimally processed foods. A great example of a simple, clean, healthy meal is a grilled chicken breast with vegetables or greens, an oil and vinegar dressing, and a portion of quinoa or brown rice. This is a healthy meal for the body with ingredients that are easy to recognize. Simple nutrition means removing complex ingredients like bread, pasta, chips, sugar, and foods with dyes, artificial flavors, or sweeteners. Simple and clean eating omits unnecessary chemicals and preservatives from entering the body while helping to deliver the best nutrition.
It’s all about balance.
Staying healthy doesn’t have to mean eating less. Instead, ensure that all the major food groups are represented in the three main meals of the day. The major food groups include: - Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, and legumes/beans - Grain foods, mostly whole grain - Vegetables - Fruit - Plain, whole-milk dairy (no added sugars) Each food group has its place in developing and helping the body stay strong and healthy. These groups also provide a wide variety of foods to choose from—helping to stay fuller longer and make healthier choices.

The chaga mushroom benefits the body in a multitude of ways. Not only does it strengthen the immune system to fight off diseases like cancer, but it battles inflammation at the source. In fact, chaga is so powerful that it has been given one of the highest Oxygen Radical Absorbent Capacity (ORAC) values out of any medicinal mushroom that currently exists. It beats the antioxidant capacity of wild blueberries, acai berries, and pomegranate! The higher the ORAC value, the better a food’s ability is to protect the body from diseasecausing free radicals. Chaga is given an ORAC value of 146,700—which is 6.5 times higher than the acai berry!

Flaxseeds have been consumed for at least 6,000 years, making them one of the world’s first cultivated superfoods. What does flaxseed do that makes it one of the most popular “superfoods”? Flaxseeds contain anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids (although not the same type as fish) along with antioxidant substances called lignans that help promote hormonal balance. Benefits of flaxseed include helping improve digestion, skin, cardiovascular health, cholesterol and hormone balance while fighting cancer and even sugar cravings—and that’s just the beginning!
