Welcome to PW’s Playhouse Now is the time to appreciate what’s really important in life— your family. Volunteer with your child at a local organization, join us for Mazopiya’s Kids in the Kitchen class, or make a Thanksgiving craft for them to hang up in the house. We’re thankful you’re here with us this season at Playworks.

INDIAN CORN THANKSGIVING HANDPRINT Spruce up the house with some fall harvest décor! This colorful handprint is perfect for all ages, and your kids will love that they get to dip their hands and feet in the paint. Teach them about the significant role corn has played as a primary food for Native Americans.

Instructions

Supplies • Card stock • Green construction or stock paper • Craft paints: yellow, orange, brown, tan • Sponge brush • Glue stick • Scissors

1.) Paint your children’s hands yellow and have them do a handprint with fingers together in the center of the paper. Allow to dry. 2.) Using a variety of browns, oranges and yellows, have the kids put fingerprints all over the handprint. Encourage them to use a variety of colors and placements, so they can see the different textures and the handprint underneath. Allow to dry. 3.) Trace their footprints onto green stock or construction paper. 4.) Cut or have them cut out their footprint, depending on their age. 5.) Have them glue their footprints in place to make it look like corn husks. Courtesy of allfreekidscrafts.com

Five

Easy Ways Kids Can Give Back

With Thanksgiving approaching, think of ways you and your kids can give back to others. Teach them to give all year round instead of once a year.

Looking for ideas? Here are five ways to get started:

1 Deliver Meals Have a car and a couple hours to spare? Many organizations are looking for volunteers like you to deliver meals or Thanksgiving turkeys to the less fortunate. Check out Meals on Wheels or WeCAN for local upcoming opportunities.

2 Help with Fall Cleanup Kids love the outdoors, so teach them to clean up their community. Rake leaves for an elderly neighbor, pick up litter, or weed a local garden. The goal is to get the kids moving outdoors and help their community.

3 Participate in a Charity Run or Walk Raise money and awareness for a cause or disease that is dear to your heart. Many communities host charity walks and runs throughout the entire year. Join the Walk to End Alzheimer’s or Light the Night Walk for cancer.

4 Volunteer with a Local Organization Find an organization your kid is passionate about. If your daughter loves animals, volunteer at your local Humane Society. Does your son get along well with other kids? Visit your local Ronald McDonald House. Nonprofits are always looking for lively volunteers like you.

5 Clean Out the Closet Kids outgrow clothing like they’re going out of style. Help them go through their closets every few months and donate clothes that don’t fit or that they’re not wearing anymore. Show them the clothes will be put to good use by donating them to a local organization.

There are plenty of opportunities right here in the community. Make it fun for your kids by inviting their friends or aligning it with their interests. For more ideas, contact your local nonprofits or volunteer organizations.
