DIVE SAFELY INTO SUMMER

W

elcome to the July issue of PW’s Playhouse. Playworks is making a splash this month in the community, with fun around every corner. Let’s keep it stress-free, safe, and relaxing this summer at Playworks. Plan ahead for that six-hour road trip, have a backyard family movie night, or whip up a savory summer salad. Stay safe and chill out this month with Playworks.

Keep your kids safe this summer with these tips on sun and water safety, fireworks, and grilling out. GRILL • Always supervise a grill when in use. • Never grill indoors. Always grill out in the open. • Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.

PROTECT YOURSELF • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least a sun protection factor of 15. • Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. • Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses and shoes on your feet. • Watch for signs of heat stroke—red, hot skin; changes in consciousness; rapid, weak pulse; shallowing breathing.

To Playcare Parents: Please remember to get your Playcare stamp before leaving Dakotah! Sport and Fitness. All membership cards must be presented upon check-in. No outside food or beverages. Remember, socks are required in the Atrium. The Playworks mission is to provide high-quality education and care to children, build cooperative partnerships with parents, provide meaningful employment, and provide a viable, fun, quality entertainment source for families.

BEACH • Always swim with a buddy. • Keep alert for local weather conditions and seek shelter when necessary. • Have young and inexperienced swimmers wear life jackets. • Pay close attention to children and the elderly. Wave action can cause you to lose footing, even in shallow water.

FIREWORKS • Enjoy the Fourth of July with care. Attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to the professionals. • Kids should never play with fireworks. Firecrackers, rockets and sparklers are just as dangerous.

YOUR ROADMAP TO SUMMER TRIPS

Discover the difference between “Are we there yet?” and “We’re here already?!” Here are 7 tips that will go a long way in your summer road trip planning. 1.

Understand your family’s rhythms. Are you an early riser or a night owl? Plan ahead so you can beat the traffic. 2. Work with your toddler’s schedule. Maximize nap time and meal time. 3. Dress for the drive. Make sure the kids are comfortable. Kids spill along the way? No problem, bring an extra pair of clothes. 4. Vary the seating. Switch seats to prevent squabbles and spend quality time with each child. 5. Be prepared. Keep lots of wet wipes, paper towels, diapers, trash bags, and snacks within reach. 6. Listen. Conversation feels less judgmental in a car than face-to-face, an ideal setting for older children to open up. 7. Plan the trip together. Hand your teens guidebooks and download travel apps so they can choose a few stops.

THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP KIT Your ingredients for a fun, stress-free road trip: • Games, such as the license plate game or travel bingo • Books, magazines and comics: Have the kids read aloud • Blank postcards: Write to friends, relatives, or even pets • Tape recorder: Produce a vacation broadcast along the way

DIY: Do It Yourself BACKYARD MOVIE SCREEN Now Playing on a Lawn Near You Catch a flick and some summer fun—all under the stars!

You will need: Staple gun and staples 2 tall buckets or garbage pails (about 22 inches high)

White blackout fabric 2-4 bags of .5 cubic feet pea gravel

2 10-foot two-by-fours 4 tent stakes 4 screw-in eye hooks Rope

Instructions: Staple the white fabric to one two-by-four, leaving a few inches of board exposed at the top. Staple the other end of fabric to the second two-by-four. Attach anchoring ropes: Hand-screw two eye hooks into either side of each two-by-four, then tie the ropes (each at least 15 feet long) to the hooks. With the help of a friend, stand one two-by-four up in a bucket and pour the gravel around it, so the two-by-four will stand upright. Repeat with the second two-by-four and bucket. Stretch fabric taut by moving the two buckets away from each other. To stabilize the screen, pull ropes out at an angle and tie to tent stakes. Push the stakes into the ground.
