Welcome to PW’s Playhouse We are more proud of our kids than ever. Our students made and sent holiday cards to members of the military, and we hope you’ll join us in giving them a huge pat on the back. We’re also celebrating National Family Fit Lifestyle Month in January. We encourage you and your family to explore new, fun ways to move in 2017—with Playworks!

EXERCISE DICE

This homemade game is an easy way to make exercise fun! Plus, you can challenge your kids’ imaginations, writing skills, and fine-motor skills as you make it

Supplies

• 2 large Styrofoam blocks

• Paper

• Markers

• Tape

• Clear adhesive film

(optional)

Directions 1

Measure and cut down pieces of paper to fit each side of both blocks. This will require 12 sheets, one for each side of each die.

2

Have your children dream up six different ways to move (like run, crab walk, tip-toe, tumble, skip, and more).

3

Using a marker, encourage your children to write one action on each piece of paper. Have them accompany the action word with a drawing depicting the action.

4

Have them tape the action words on a square, one on each of the 6 sides.

5

Instruct them write numbers 1-6 on the other cut pieces of paper. Make sure that there is one number per sheet of paper.

6

Draw dots under the numbers to represent each number.

7

Ask them to adhere the number sheets to the six sides of the other die.

Play

To start the game, create an imaginary circle to act as a boundary. Encourage your children to roll both dice and do that action around the circle. Try it with them! For example, if the action die lands on “Skip” and the number die lands on “2,” skip twice around the imaginary circle. Each player should take a turn rolling the dice. The goal? Follow the directions and have fun!

PLAYWORKS Kids Send Holiday Cards to Deployed Service Members Small doses of holiday cheer made their way to deployed members of the U.S. Armed Forces in December. Playworks students shared the spirit of the season by making and sending more than 200 cards to those who weren’t able to spend the holidays with their families. “We actually asked our families if they had anyone to send them to,” said Playworks Director Amy Donaldson. “We had eight addresses that we sent over 200 homemade cards to.” Thank you to the students and families who helped make the holidays a little bit brighter for the men and women serving our country!

Make Healthy a Lifestyle Challenge yourself to move more this year. January is National Family Fit Lifestyle month, so now’s the time to get the entire family establishing healthy lifestyle habits. Here are a few tips to get started: 1. Shop healthy as a family. Select nutritious foods and discuss the benefits of eating healthier. We’re big fans of Mazopiya. They’re a local food market in Prior Lake that makes eating healthy easy with to-go options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a smoothie/juice bar, 100-percent organic produce, and a soup and salad bar. Learn more at mazopiya.com. 2. Make physical activity a regular part of your family’s routine. Playworks Atrium is a good place to move in the colder months. Another great way to get up and get active? Our neighbor Dakotah! Bowling offers a Family Fun Night on Mondays, 5-9pm. Learn more at dakotahsport.com. 3. Limit screen time. Or if you really want to get your favorite show in, try being active while watching TV. Yoga, lunges, burpees—the possibilities are endless! Want to mix up your family activities? Dakotah! Sport and Fitness has classes, swimming lessons, ice-skating—you name it. Learn more at dakotahsport.com. Source: The Children’s Aid Society

Local Support for Local Schools

The local tribe that owns Playworks recently contributed $250,000 in grants to area schools with the hope of promoting a bright future for all students. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) is providing $125,000 in grants to the Shakopee Public School District and Prior LakeSavage Area School system. “We appreciate local schools’ role in preparing our youth for the future, and we know that they will put these donations to good use,” said SMSC Chairman Charles R. Vig, who is also an alumnus of Shakopee High School. For each district, $25,000 of the donation will be allocated for the district’s Indian Education Program. The districts will determine the best use for the remainder. Learn more at shakopeedakota.org.

Standard rates apply. Kids ages 4-12 can be dropped off. Others are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.
