Summer Bug Repellent Safety FOR CHILDREN
Warm summer days bring more bugs that can bite your children, leaving your kids itchy, in pain, and possibly putting them at risk of contracting a serious illness. Insect repellents come in many forms — aerosols, sprays, creams, liquids and sticks. Repellents keep away biting insects, but not stinging insects. Biting insects include biting flies, mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and chiggers. Stinging insects include wasps, bees and hornets. Here are some tips for using insect repellents, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics:
Do:
1. Read all labels and follow precautions. 2. Use just enough repellent to cover the outside of clothing and exposed skin—using more doesn’t provide 3. 4. 5.
better protection. Use bug sprays in open, well-ventilated areas to avoid breathing fumes. Help young children apply bug spray and supervise older children while using bug spray. Wash skin after going indoors to remove any remaining spray, and wash clothing before wearing again.
Don’t:
1. Apply to children younger than 2 months. 2. Apply directly to your child’s face—always apply on your hands first and then rub it onto their face, making 3. 4. 5.
sure to avoid eyes and mouth. Apply to areas that are irritated, cut, or have wounds. Use products that contain permethrin directly on skin. Use products with DEET while using sunscreen. The DEET can make the sun protection factor (SPF) less effective. Sunscreens can overexpose your child to DEET because sunscreen needs to be reapplied often.
