Congratulations, you’ve made the decision to be more active and eat healthy in the new year! But there is something lurking that could be holding you back: sugar. Limiting your sugar intake—whether it's natural or added—can reduce your risk for heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and other health conditions.
Cutting sugar out of your diet can be a challenge though because it hides in many different types of unsuspecting foods and drinks. On top of that, sugar can be an addictive substance that takes focus and energy to overcome. Here are some tactics to put into action now:
• Keep track. Over the course of a few days, take note of how many sugary substances you consume and then take steps to decrease that amount. For example, if you crave sugar after every meal, commit to one meal with no treat.
• Embrace procrastination. Every time you feel a craving to eat a sweet treat, try pushing it off for five minutes, or longer if you can. By the end of the day, all those five-minute chunks of procrastinating add up to less intake.
• Discover distractions. Instead of snacking, play a game on your phone, busy your hands with a fidget item, or walk a lap around your work area. What other distractors would you add to this list?
• Drink water. This is a best practice for overall better health in general, but sometimes dehydration can manifest into hunger and cravings.
• Get plenty of rest. Make a commitment to getting enough sleep each night. Sleep deprivation can often cause sugar cravings as a way to get more energy.
If you’re still craving sugar, explore healthier options that might do the trick. Try dark chocolate, granola, a Greek yogurt parfait, or a fruit salad. Mazopiya has a variety of healthier alternatives to help you kick your cravings, include a vast selection of delicious dark chocolates, including Marich pancrafted chocolates on special this month.
Fighting sugar cravings is no easy task. Creating new habits takes time so be patient with yourself and you’ll soon see the benefits of kicking sugar to the curb.
