Diwali a time of hope over despair...

Message from Mr Kirit Prabhudas Patel, chairman & CEO of Motibhai Group & chairman of Fiji Times Pte Limited At the outset I would like to wish all our valued customers, stakeholders, suppliers, staff and management a very happy and peace-filled Diwali. May this beautiful and vibrant festival awaken the light of joy and happiness within each of us, every day of our lives. As you all know, we have to think a bit differently about our celebration this year due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Diwali is a reminder that it is everyone's responsibility to look out for each other and see beyond gender, race, religion, age, abilities and status and do what is right and more so during the times when the whole world has been going through very challenging circumstances since the outbreak of Coronavirus. I know COVID-19 effects have been difficult for Fijians of all faiths in terms of job losses, being away from families’ etcetera as we often look to our religion to find comfort in times of contention and suffering.

What the festival of lights really stands for today is a reaffirmation of hope, a renewed commitment to friendship and goodwill – which lessons are of special importance this Diwali season, as there are many who have been displaced and are suffering in the wake of outbreak of COVID-19. I request those fortunate enough to be spared to join hands to help our fellow Fijians. Together, we can overcome this challenge, emerge stronger and truly observe the Diwali spirit of love

and kindness that Lord Rama sought to inspire in his life. We have experienced great challenges and difficult times this year - the loss and suffering visited upon us by Tropical Cyclone Harold in early April along with this COVID-19, but we are united through adversity and triumph. The story of Diwali highlights, family unity, togetherness, good values and loving one another and hope over despair. Let us have faith in ourselves as a people, because we Fijians have shown

that we can triumph over any adversity, meet any challenge, and chart the most ambitious course for our future. These traits are what make a complete, fulfilling life; and Diwali gives an opportunity to reiterate the importance of treating our people with the respect, love and compassion that they deserve by rewinding the journey of Lord Rama that began from a noble, selfless and obedient honour of his father’s promise. Given the times we all are in, let’s take this Diwali as an opportunity to renew the spirit of hope, courage and compassion that has brought us to where we stand today. Let us care for those who are less fortunate, let us protect those who are vulnerable, let us love and understand each other, and let us always uphold the high moral character that defines us as Fijians. May God Bless each and every one, and may the festival of lights bring each one of us joy and happiness today and always. Have a safe and a blessed Diwali.

Fiji Day celebrated at head-office and all operations across the group The Motibhai Group head-office situated at the gigantic Motibhai Business Park in Legelega, Nadi was a sea of blue as the management and staff united to observe Fiji’s 50th Independence Day with a special cake cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 8. Subsequently, all business outlets and subsidiaries operated by the group also participated in similar events across the country to mark this milestone achievement. While addressing the head-office based staff members, Motibhai Group chairman and CEO Kirit Patel said it is an honour for him to be addressing everyone closely associated with the company during such a defining, memorable and magnificent moment. “This symbolizes national pride for which we all must take time to reflect on our beloved Fiji, what it means to us. It’s a time to celebrate our bonding, unity and the pride in its achievement and the progress that it made in the past five decades. It’s a day to celebrate for being a proud Fijian to live in a multiracial nation,”Mr Patel said. “As we all celebrate our Fiji’s 50th Independence Anniversary it’s apt that we also reflect on the changes that have taken place

in our beloved country. Fiji as a nation has come a long way since 1970. Since then we as a nation have grown together. Along the way we have faced many challenges and trying times but we have survived and bounced back strongly because of the spirit and determination that all Fijians have within to thrive and flourish. “Perhaps it is both a blessing and a curse that our 50th Independence Anniversary coincides with one of the gravest threats to humanity for a century, allowing us to put our Independence into better perspective. It is tempting to believe that the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented in its impact on the whole world. The event has devastated our lives and deprived employment to many people in which most of our families depend on for survival, but there have been times in the past years that we felt the same and we as a nation survived. “Amid the challenges an indescribable feeling we all share when we sing those hallowed words, “God Bless Fiji”, the idea of “Forever Fiji” gives us a hope for a better tomorrow. As we see our noble banner blue flag waving proudly in the air it stands as a beacon of hope for all Fijians. This is an assurance that we will stand together in both

happy and trying times. The pride of being a proud Fijian just swells in our chest when we see the Fiji Flag flying. “From Thursday 8 October till Saturday 10 October, all our locations are observing Fiji Day mufti with cake cutting ceremony to make this Fiji Day celebration a memorable one. This is what we call togetherness and unity at our group. As we look to the year ahead, we will be planning another celebration for 2021, when we will mark our 90 years of existence. With our sights on 90 years, I look forward to seeing yet another year of collaboration, patriotism, unity, and bonding. Each one of us has a special role to play in helping our group to move forward notwithstanding the fact that we are confronting some of the greatest challenges facing humanity today. “Our identity as Fijians is defined by our love for our country and respect for others and this gives more reason for Fiji’s Independence celebrations. “I take this opportunity in wishing all my fellow executives, management and staff a happy, peaceful and meaningful Fiji Independence Day.” q

Company offers relief for Fijans While the unemployment rate soars high, the need to assist parents and children alike was prioritised by the Motibhai Group. Following correspondence with our suppliers, a Facebook competition was cooked up. Six parents took home two cartons each of Huggies Wipes and Diapers to help them as they continue to make ends meet during these difficult times. Most children came along with their parents to receive their awards and were full of smiles and their happiness

brightened up the entire Motibhai team. Parents testified that these prizes came as additional help while they work hard to avoid dire straits. Another such promotion that we ran for the month of October was to reward its participants an amazing George Foreman Griddle just by simply stating how VIVA has helped them celebrate Diwali. The comments section was flooded with a number of people explaining how VIVA has made Diwali celebrations much much easier for them.
