Popular TV and radio host raises cancer awareness

Cancer awareness and advocacy in the country received a further boost when renowned TV and radio personality Shammi Lochan hosted members of the Fiji Cancer Society and the management team of Motibhai Group in her popular talk back show “Aaina” on Monday, July 27 as part of the Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea (BFBMT) campaign this year. The prestigious BFBMT initiative which is in its 14th year running, has over the years assisted the Fiji Cancer Society in many ways by raising the much needed funds for cancer patient support, awareness and advocacy. The show which was hosted on Radio Fiji Two and later broadcast on FBC TV reached thousands of listeners and viewers all over Fiji with updated information on the killer disease. Motibhai Group national sales manager Rajesh Kumar said the company is proud of its association with the Fiji Cancer Society through the BFBMT initiative for the last 14-years as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Burger King gets creative in reaching customers Fiji’s largest quick service restaurant – Burger King has introduced creative ways of reaching out to its customers who are unable to personally visit their various outlets. The company has now partnered with two food delivery agencies which enjoy a huge customer base in towns and cities around Fiji. “We initially partnered with Cyber Food with great success and recently expanded our delivery partner to include Fiji Eats,” BK general manager Akash Narsey said. “Both partners are our delivery agents and customers have the freedom of choice on whom they wish to use for their food delivery. “Delivery has always been an area of interest for us due to the success of the platform in overseas Burger King franchises. “We had been in discussions with launching this however with the outbreak of COVID-19 and the restrictions on movement and gathering as part of the COVID-19 social distancing laws, we felt the need to accelerate our plans. “In the long term we see a shift in customer trends and we want to be able to cater for the changing customer patterns. “We have been pleased with the initial response and look forward to growing this segment of the business.” Mr Narsey said the company is also getting very good response

Duo salute company for timely help

Community workers Allen Lockington and Narayan Reddy of Lautoka have expressed their utmost gratitude to the management of Motibhai Group for their timely donation of 50 food and consumer goods hampers worth around $5,000 to assist people severely affected by the negative impacts of COVID-19. The company recently made a similar donation to FRIEND Fiji which transforms into an active ground agent during times of need. Together the two friends who are very active in the community have helped over 7,000 families around Viti Levu including a few outer islands mostly through donations from generous individuals and organisations and also through their personal funds. “We salute the management of Motibhai Group for coming in to assist people in need through the timely donation last month,” Mr Narayan Reddy said. “The donation could not have come at a better time and the items consisted of many varieties of food and consumer goods which was so appreciated by the recipients,” Mr Reddy added. The company had joined forces with some of its key suppliers to make the donation possible during such trying times. Wife of cancer patient shares experience during morning tea A WOMAN whose husband is battling cancer has encouraged families and caregivers of cancer patients to not lose hope. Teresia Vakalala, 47, of Cunningham Rd, Suva is a breadwinner whose life is fraught with challenges. Her husband, Emosi Vakalala, is diagnosed with a type of blood cancer and is admitted at the CWM Hospital. Speaking at the Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea event at the Motibhai Group Suva office in Walu Bay last month, Teresia said she was going through a difficult time. “It’s very challenging,” she said. “It’s hard because I am the sole breadwinner in the family. “Some of the challenges I face are the sleepless nights trying to get my husband comfortable. He is in so much pain and is unable to

PEOPLE should not rely on herbal medicine as a cure for cancer, says a general surgery and pediatric surgery specialist at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Dr Josese Turagava made the statement as he revealed that of the 250 new cases recorded in a year for breast cancer, doctors operated on only 60 to 70 patients. The rest come in when it is too late, he said. “Most of them, when diagnosed, go here and there looking for herbal medicine for a year or two,” he said. “By the time they come to us, it’s already late and it goes to the last stage.” Speaking at the annual Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea event at the Motibhai Group Suva office in Walu Bay last month, he stressed cancer could only be cured in the early stages. “We can’t cure cancer at late stage,” he said. “The best thing is that breast cancer is curable. We’ve got chemotherapy, we’ve got hormonal treatment, we’ve got surgery. Mrs Vakalala thanked the Fiji Cancer Society for their help. The Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea event is held annually to raise funds to assist cancer patients and to raise awareness on cancer.
