Celebrate Fiji’s 50th Independence Day

To commemorate Fiji’s 50th Independence Day, Prouds has teamed up with award-winning fashion designer Robert Kennedy who has come up with three different designs of apparel available in four different colours which blends well with Fiji’s independence theme and natural beauty. In an exclusive interview with Inbox, Kennedy reveals how he got inspired to create these unique designs. “The lead design is based on a commemorative coin that was made for the 1970 Independence Day celebrations. This is what I researched on. “It has a shield, with dove and olive branch, surmounted by a crown, the supporters being two coconut trees. Below is the motto. “Rereveka na kalou ka doka na tui”, which is interpreted, “Honour and glory to the king.” [In fact: Fear God and honour the king.] “The sceptres are inspired by the sceptres of the British kings. The sceptre with the dove is of the model of the sceptre of King Charles II (1680-´85), the sceptre with the cross imitates more or less the sceptre of Mary of Modena, the second queen of King James II (1685-´88). “The crown in its original form reminds of the crown of King Louis XV (1715-´74). Unlike the regalia of Hawaii the Fijian regalia does not seem to have really existed. Instead the royal club can be considered as the main symbol of royal Fijian power. The Royal achievement of King Cakobau is on the reverse of a commemorative one-dollar coin of 1970. “The other two designs were basically inspired by graphics from 1970. Bold typefaces were popular then along with a stylised Masi pattern. “The colour pallet I chose are all my favorite Fiji colors. Blues and turquoise’s to represent our ocean and lagoons. Greens, browns and grey’s to represent our verdant land.” Meanwhile, the four models Bulou Kalivakatoga, Lohuni Kubunavanua, Romeo Naura and Romario Wakeham - represent Fiji’s melting pot of races and have been well captured on camera by award-winning photojournalist Rob Rickman in the pristine and scenic surroundings of Sigatoka.

Fiji Times turns 151-years-old Fiji’s oldest news media – The Fiji Times marked its 151st anniversary on Friday, September 4 last month. Founded by visionary entrepreneur George Griffiths in 1869 during turbulent times, the newspaper has changed a few hands of ownership in its one and a half century history. It is now owned by Fiji’s leading diverse business operator – Motibhai Group which acquired the newspaper ten-years-ago from Rupert Murdoch’s News Limited following media ownership law changes in the country. In a statement released by Motibhai Group to mark the newspaper’s 151st anniversary, the company emphasised on the role played by The Fiji Times in preserving Fiji’s rich history while keeping everyone well-informed in today’s modern times. “As a 90-year-old family company, we respect history and the work of those who have come before us,” the Motibhai Group stated. “Ten-years-ago, the long history of The Fiji Times was an important reason for us to buy it. “But The Fiji Times is also Fiji’s historian. “Fiji’s story is told every day in its honest and objective journalism, in the thoughtful columns of its analysts, in the colour of its sports news and in its much-read (and much written to) letters to the editor pages. “We are proud to own The Fiji Times. But we also understand our responsibility, not just to history, but to today’s news and today’s important information. “And despite the many daily challenges, we are committed to keeping it that way. Congratulations Fiji Times on your 151st anniversary.”

Get ready for success at school When kids grow up strong and active, their mums are so proud that they had laid down a strong foundation for their kids’ future. By giving your children Ovaltine as a nutritional drink every day, you will ensure they are getting all the essential vitamins and minerals they need while growing up. While children in general can obtain adequate nutrition from regular foods, a supplemental fortified nutritional drink such as

Ovaltine is necessary, particularly for those experiencing failure to thrive in education and sporting activities. The main benefit of Ovaltine is that it adds many vitamins and minerals to a standard glass of milk and helps protect the body's cells and enhances the immune system function. Give your kids Ovaltine everyday as it contains ‘Power 10’ nutrients.
