FDA president Dr Vikash Singh, right, receives the donation cheque from Motibhai Group national sales manager Rajesh Kumar, from left, sales manager Sudesh Bhan and marketing manager Abraham Gomes last month.

Support for oral health The Motibhai Group – principal distributors of Wrigley products in Fiji has supported the Fiji Dental Association (FDA) for the second consecutive year with a sponsorship donation of $5,000 ahead of their annual conference which was held last month in Suva. The donation is in line with the “Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program” (WOHP) that partners with dental professionals worldwide, helping them improve their patients’ oral health through one additional simple and enjoyable step in their daily routine: “chewing sugar-free gum after eating and drinking”. “Oral health is integral to total health. The fact is that sugar-free gum has an important role to play in the maintenance of oral health. It is proven that sugar-free gum has a key role to play, alongside good oral hygiene techniques such as brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, and flossing as a means of preventing tooth decay,” Motibhai Group marketing manager Abraham Gomes said. “This role is increasingly important in light of today’s eating habits – which have moved away from the traditional ‘three-meals-a-day’ habit to a ‘grazing’ style of eating – often with frequent snacking,” he added. Mr Gomes said it is important to remem-

ber that dental decay can also impact an individual’s overall productivity and contribution to society. “The good news is that this most common chronic disease of humankind is largely preventable through simple and cost-effective measures like chewing sugar-free gum after eating. “Chewing sugar-free gum increases the rate of saliva flow by almost ten times. This increase in saliva raises the mineral concentration in the mouth and increases the PH level of our saliva – ultimately improving our mouth’s ability to protect against the food acids that cause plaque and dental cavities. “The science supporting this claim is widely accepted around the world and as a result our sugar-free chewing gum has endorsements from the likes of the FDI – World Dental Federation, American Dental Association and the Australian Dental Association to name a few.” FDA conference chair of the organising committee Dr Leenu Maimanuku said the theme for this year’s annual conference was: “New Normal: New Horizons”. “The devastating global pandemic has impacted how we work and learn as dental

practitioners. Our profession is at a high risk of contracting and possibly also transmitting the disease through aerosols generated,” Dr Maimanuku said. “There are tried and tested standards and regulations in place globally to reduce the risk and make dentistry safer even during situations such as this pandemic. “The donation from our generous sponsors will ensure that we are able to provide our members with educational and training support they need to adjust to these “New Normal” and provide safe care for our patients in Fiji.” Meanwhile, this year’s annual conference also coincided with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Fiji Dental Association which was formed on June 29, 1970. “The association started its journey five decades ago with a handful of dentists who saw the need to formally register an association to be the voice of the dental profession in Fiji and to provide service to the profession ensuring that the community had access to quality dental healthcare which was kept updated through relevant professional development and peer support,” Dr Maimanuku informed.

Burger King praised by consumer watchdogs The management of Burger King is pleased with the appreciation received from Fiji’s consumer watchdogs for immediately reducing prices based on the new budget announcement. General Manager Akash Narsey said it is very encouraging to be commended by the Consumer Council of Fiji (CCF) and the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) for setting the example in the local market. “Soon after the budget announcement, the prices of our imported ingredients went down because of reduction in tax and duty charges and we did not hesitate to immediately review all our prices across the board and pass on the great discounts to our customers,” Mr Narsey said. “We were honoured when both the CCF and FCCC issued media releases to praise our honest efforts in passing on the benefits of the new budget to our customers and we wish to thank both the organisations for their words of encouragement and support at such a crucial time,” Mr Narsey added. Meanwhile, more exciting things are happening at Burger King and customers can follow our Facebook page for regular updates.

Warehouse sale a super success! The first ever grand warehouse sale held over two weekends at the Motibhai Group Suva office last month was a great success as customers came out in numbers to take advantage of prices never seen before in the local market. The price reduction on wines, and imported/local spirits and beers is a direct result of duty and tax reduction as announced in the new budget. “We are very pleased with the response and wish to thank all our customers who took advantage of the sale,” Motibhai Group marketing manager Abraham Gomes said. “A similar sale is being held at the company head-office in Nadi from September 4-6 for our west based customers.” q Curtis Mar and friends get all excited at the grand warehouse sale in Suva.

Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea campaign ends successfully The prestigious Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea (BFBMT) campaign which is held from June to September every year was revised and shortened to two months between July and August this year because of the negative effects of COVID-19. The campaign which is sponsored by Motibhai Group to support Fiji Cancer Society raise the much needed funds for their operations started way back in 2006. Fiji Cancer Society CEO Belinda Chan said the society is grateful to the management of Motibhai Group for carrying on the 14-year-old partnership despite the challenging times prevailing across the country. To support the society, the Motibhai Group also held their own morning tea events in Suva and Nadi recently.

Motibhai Group chairman and CEO Mr Kirit Patel shares a light moment with Fiji Cancer Society board member Mrs Margaret Rounds, centre, and CEO Ms Belinda Chan during the morning tea at the Motibhai Business Park in Legalega, Nadi.

Faiyum laments mum’s loss Young Mohammed Faiyum of Vitogo, Lautoka could not hold back his tears while sharing his experience of losing his mother to tongue cancer this year. Speaking at the Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea (BFBMT) event at the Motibhai Group head-office in Nadi recently, Faiyum said losing his mother was the saddest experience of his life. 60-year-old Khusnuma Begum was diagnosed with tongue cancer in October last year and succumbed to the diseases in June this year after returning from India where she received treatment. “My entire world has gone upside down

and I am feeling totally lost as my mother was not only my mother but my best friend as well and I shared everything with her,” Faiyum said. He thanked the Fiji Cancer Society for their support in facilitating his mother’s treatment in India and said it was very unfortunate that she could not survive the deadly disease despite receiving good treatment. Fiji Cancer Society board member Margaret Rounds thanked the Motibhai Group for their unwavering support which has helped thousands of patients and their fami- Motibhai Group sales manager Sant lies for the last 14-years through the BFBMT Raj makes his contribution during initiative. the morning tea event.

Address by Ms Sheline Naickar of Motibhai Group during the BFBMT event at the head-office on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 Our company CEO, Mr Kirit Patel, directors of Motibhai Group, the invited guests, members of media and my dear fellow colleagues. Once again, good morning to you all! I express my humble gratitude to each one of you for taking out your valuable time to be with us today in support of this initiative for Fiji Cancer Society. I would like to acknowledge Mr Bhupendra Patel who is currently away in Melbourne and due to borders being closed has not been able to travel to be part of this event. Motibhai Group has been in partnership with the Fiji Cancer Society since 2006 and this year marks its consecutive 14th year of hosting “Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea” as part of group’s corporate social responsibility. Even in this unprecedented time, Motibhai Group stands strong to its commitment towards this noble cause. On

8th July, our Walubay office hosted “Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea” which was split into two sessions due to the current restriction in place for gathering to no more than 100 people. The funds raised goes towards increasing cancer awareness, advocacy and patient care. This has helped save thousands of lives and facilitated the much needed patient care support for both cancer survivors and patients undergoing treatment. Cancer cases in Fiji has increased over the past several years and is the third most common cause of deaths in Fiji. As of May 2020, 260 cancer cases were registered out of which 24 new cases were recorded in the month of May alone. Last year, Fiji Cancer Society recorded 250 cases out of which 29 people lost their battle with cancer. Latest statistics from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services also revealed

that around five to six men are being diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Fiji. Breast, cervix and other reproductive tract cancers in women are increasing. Fiji Cancer Society has built strong links with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in order to provide clinical care and advocates for cancer control through health promotion and early detection. Despite Cancer outreach programs, there still are cases that come in very late. Ladies and gentleman, it is therefore very important to carry on with campaigns such as “Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea” to help the needy people. I would like to leave with a very special proverb, which says: - “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”
