CHURCH LIFE

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BE IN THE KNOW.

KINDERGARTEN SUNDAY

Welcome to Kindergarten Sunday! Today we recognize our kindergarteners at the 9:30 a.a. service where we will present them with a Bible and a Bible Study that they can do with their guardians! Please join us in praying for our kindergartners and their families in their transition to elementary school.

3rd GRADE SUNDAY

Next Sunday, August 27, we will recognize our 3rd graders and present them with a Bible during our 11:07 a.m. worship service in the Family Life Center. We hope you’ll join us in supporting our children’s ministry for the new school year!

DISCERNMENT PROCESS UPDATE

Keep an eye out for a letter in the mail from Pastor Alan providing an update on where we are with the discrenment process and the United Methodist Church. Additional copies of the letter are avaiable in the Narthex of the Sanctuary and Lobby of the Family Life Center.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & ARTICLES

Come for a journey in THE GOOD LIFE with Splash of Joy 1 as we study AMOS by Jennifer Rothschild. AMOS is often called a prophet of doom, and when you read his prophecy, that nickname seems to fit. On the surface, his message doesn’t sound like a happy formula for the good life. However, every condemnation he declares serves as an invitation, a call to “seek God and live” (Amos 5:4).

In this 8 session study, you’ll be invited to live assured, faithful, chosen, humble, justly, prayerfully and hopeful. This kind of living brings peace and true prosperity for us and those around us. Amos promotes the God life, and the God life is the good life!!

DID YOU KNOW?

Did You Know you haven an opportunity to dust off your latent piano playing skills right here at SUMC? You may serve as a substitute accompanist for the Joyful Place Gospel Chorale Tuesday and Thursday mornings in our Cross Corner Social Hall!

Joyful Place is open from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

If you are interested, please contact Leigh Rice at leigh@shalimar-umc.org

Media and Communications Liaison, Abigail Denney Raffield

Dear Church Family,

I wish to announce some sad news for our Church Family and Staff. Abigail Raffield has been on our staff at Shalimar UMC for nearly a year and a half coordinating our communications ministries. I had a conversation with Abbey this week and she shared with me her resignation from her position on the church staff. To assist her as she seeks further employment in her field, I encouraged her to move forward without need for serving out a notice period in the offices.

I am deeply thankful for Abbey and her ministry with Shalimar. She sought to bring clarity and innovation to our communications processes, and I was glad to have worked with her for the short time that I have been here at the church. As you see her, please encourage her as she takes these next steps in her career. Also pray for her as she is in her search for the next communications position.

If I can help you with any questions about this change in our staff, please feel free to contact me at the church office or on my cell phone, (251) 747-3567.

In Christ,

Update on Chris Bennett

As most of you know, Chris Bennett, our Facilities Manager, and Interim Youth Director, had emergency spinal decompression surgery last Friday morning. They went in on a herniated disk but found bone fragments, most likely from a previous injury, lodged against his spinal column. The extent of the damage is unknown, but he will be in inpatient rehab at HCA Destin to get stronger with some physical therapy and will also be out for much longer than anticipated. During this time, Chris, Mandy, and the children could use your prayers.

Mandy’s mother has come down to live with her and assist with the children while Chris is in rehab. There is a meal train running and a Go Fund campaign to help with medical deductibles. Links are below.

Meal Train: https://mealtrain.com/9e8rq6 (Organized by Ben and Angelina Savage, 850-865-9880 if you have questions)

GoFund Me: https://gofund.me/fcf728ce (Organized by Justin Day)

The pastors and essential staff/volunteers met and devised a plan for moving forward with the youth program.

Chris Bennett is able and willing to continue planning for the fall semester while he is at rehab. He will plan Wednesday Small Groups, Sunday Worship and Word, Next Gen Night, Sunday School, 5th Quarter (Sept 15th), and The Challenge Weekend (Sept 29th and 30th) accordingly.

Our Director of Worship Arts, Ben Savage, will coordinate logistics on-site for these events as Chris gives directions.

Rev. John Kelsoe and Wayne Walker, both with backgrounds in youth ministry, will step in to assist with teaching and mentoring as needed with the calendar—Kelsoe on Sundays and Walker on Wednesdays.

We have looked out the month of August and September, anticipating knowing more in the coming weeks concerning rehab, and will update you when we have more information.

Tony Malini, our Administrator, is working out maintenance issues and can be contacted if you have any questions. tony@shalimar-umc.org or call the main office line at (850) 651-0721.

We had a youth leadership meeting this past Saturday, August 12th, @ 9 am in Cross Corner that went over this with volunteer team.

If you have any questions or would like to assist with the youth at this time, please email youth@shalimar-umc.org
