Church Life Thank you, Veterans! This weekend we pause to honor all our Veterans for their service. We appreciate your past and present sacrifices that have granted us the freedoms that we so richly enjoy in this great country.

Oneblood Blood Drive At Shalimar UMC, we are always looking for ways to serve our community with the love of Christ. One way we do that is by partnering with Oneblood to donate blood. Oneblood’s Big Red Bus will be on campus to receive donations from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. on Sunday, November 12. Online appointments are encouraged, but not required. Visit oneblood.org/donate-now to schedule an appointment using sponsor code 20789.

Teenage Gift Card Last year, the Teenager Gift Card Ministry provided 134 gift cards to teenagers in need among our church family, those who are homeless, and those in foster care! This year, you can give to this ministry by making checks payable to SUMC with a memo note for “teenage gift cards”. Contact Ron Garriga at r.garriga@cox.net with questions or if you know a teen whom this ministry would bless.

Deck The Halls We will be “decking the halls” on campus after lunch on November 26! All are welcome to come and participate in decorating the Family Life Center, Sanctuary, Cross Corner, and the Church office for the Advent season.

Thanksgiving Blessing Bags Thanksgiving Blessing Bags provide families with the items they need to prepare their own Thanksgiving meal. Please pick up a bag and return to the Bread House no later than Friday, November 17.

Good of the Church Children’s Moment Last Sunday our Children’s Ministry Director, Sarah Hicks, led a special Children’s Moment during the 11:07 a.m. Freedom service. A Children’s Moment will be included in the 11:07 a.m. worship service each Sunday to give the children an opportunity to observe the importance and joy of corporate worship and experience God through songs of praise, fellowship time, and prayer.

Offering Moment SAVE THE DATE: Angel Tree Keep an eye out for the Angel Tree in the Sanctuary Narthex in the coming weeks. This year Shalimar Mom Co. (formerly MOPS) will be directing the Angel Tree efforts. We encourage you to take a name and help spread the love of Christ this Christmas to children who need it the most in our community. If you have any questions, please contact Erica Jones, Mom Co. co-coordinator, at ericacaitlyn15@gmail.com.

Dear Friends in Christ,

November 7. 2023

Grace and Peace to you in Jesus Christ! I wished to take a brief opportunity to share with you me deep thanks to all of our Church Family here at Shalimar Church for the wonderful cards, prayers, words of encouragement you extended to Karen and I during October’s Pastor Appreciation Month. I’m not sure who originally came up with the idea of setting aside last month as a time to “buck-up” your pastors, but this pastor deeply appreciated it (and needed it). Over the span of the month, I received well over 40 cards with the warmest and most holy expressions of lovethere were also a few wonderful gift cards to Starbucks, Deb’s Coffee and several area restaurants! I continue to be thrilled to be here at Shalimar as your Lead Pastor and truly feel blessed by God to be on-board with you in this ministry we share. I have good news to share with you! Over the past couple of months, our giving to God through the Church has improved, and I wish to thank you for your faithfulness. Through September and October, our deficit in our Ministry/Operations budget has eased by about $23,000 and we enjoyed two months where we were “in the black” in terms of expenses to income. In addition to this blessing trend, I’m very thankful to report that compared to this period last year, our numbers are up! Children’s Ministry has seen an increase in numbers of kids of nearly 25% every week and our Student Ministry has also seen a similar jump- thanks be to God for Sarah Hicks, Chris Bennett, and their wonderful ministry team participants! Our in-person attendance to worship across all four services each Sunday has increased 7% from its previous level last year by this time. I’m truly thankful for Dr. Brad Bradford and Ben Savage for their excellent leadership with their ministry groups in conducting meaningful and uplifting worship experiences. My brother pastor, Rev. John Kelsoe is a blessing to me and to many as he spreads out in ministry across the church. I’m very thankful to say as well that Jeremy Thiess and Ben Savage, teaming with Pat Brantley have done a wonderful job of fine-tuning our communications facets. I really love the new design to our Worship Guide which is handed out every Sunday and to the excellent work they do with our weekly Beacon newsletter. If you would like to be involved in assisting with communication ministry, please contact one of these folks so they can plug you in to a vital area of our ministries. Currently, our Church Leadership and families across our church here in Shalimar are awaiting word about the injunction we joined with 41 other churches in the Alabama-West Florida Conference. I understand that this group of churches, led by the National Center for Life and Liberty, had a court hearing in Montgomery, AL, on Wednesday, November 8. It’s not yet clear to me if our Leaders have heard the outcome of this hearing, but I assure you that as soon as they receive information, we will be passing it forward to our Church Family. If you have any questions about this matter, please feel free to contact me and I will try to help you get the information you need. This incredible Church Staff and I are now preparing for Veterans Day Sunday, Thanksgiving, and the building excitement of Advent- getting ready for Christmas. Please reach out to others whom you know and invite them to come and hear about Jesus’ love and also have an opportunity to experience how much Jesus loves them, just as you have experienced His love. In Jesus’ Love, Dr. Alan W. McBride, Lead Pastor Shalimar United Methodist Church

Articles & Announcements

Last Sunday, we honored those family, friends, and members of our congregation who have gone on to be with the Lord during the past year.

After last Sunday’s worship services, our Youth Choir hosted their annual spaghetti lunch! The funds raised from this lunch go toward their 2024 choir tour.

All of God’s children (K – 5th grade) are invited to worship alongside their families and church family during the 11:07 a.m. Freedom Service. Not only will this give the children an opportunity to observe the importance and joy of corporate worship, but also experience God through acts of praise and worship such as: the greeting, songs of praise, prayer, and a special children’s moment with Sarah Hicks, Children’s Director. After the children’s moment, the children and volunteers will exit to continue worship (Children’s Church) in the children’s new worship space. The children may be picked up from that room after service. Let us join in upholding to our baptism vows to partner with families as they nurture their child’s faith journey.

Through the years, one of the foundational pleas of the Prayer Team has been that “Our church would forever be a House of Prayer.” With that as our inspiration, we would like to present our Congregational Prayer Focus Plan for November. The November and December Prayer Focus will be available in the Sanctuary Narthex and in the FLC. They can also be downloaded from the church webpage. This week we are praying for: Pray for the SUMC Laity Staff Members Pray for the Called Annual COnference scheduled for November 12.

Jim Brantley, Shalimar UMC Prayer Team Coordinator

Shalimar UMC is joining the parade! We are hosting a float in the annual Fort Walton Beach Christmas Parade on Monday, December 4, at 6:30 p.m. This year’s theme is, “What does Christmas mean to you?” To us, Christmas means the arrival of Jesus Christ, so our float will be themed around the nativity! We’re excited to share the love of Christ with our community and we’d love for you to join in the fun! Stop by the table in the FLC Lobby on Sundays and Wednesdays to sign up to participate in the event, or email Dawn Rozofsky (dawn@shalimar-umc.org) or Sarah Hicks (sarah@ shalimar-umc.org) by Monday, November 20. When you sign up, please let us know how many people you expect to participate with you. If you can’t make the parade but would like to help, we are in need of candy donations to hand out. Candy donations can be brought to the FLC Lobby or church office. We are also looking to borrow a long trailer for the event. If you have any questions regarding donations, please contact Dawn Rozofsky, Camp Director, at dawn@shalimar-umc.org.

We will be “decking the halls” on campus after lunch on November 26! All are welcome to come and participate in decorating the Family Life Center, Sanctuary, Cross Corner, and the Church office for the Advent season.
