For eight hours every week, wonderful adults with very special needs attend Joyful Place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am until 2 pm to experience Jesus’ love through fellowship, games, a meal, and worship. Joyful Place allows time for their spouses and/or caregivers to not only receive some muchneeded rest but also to take care of their own needs. Our Director Leigh Rice and Assistant Director, Forrest Oliver, would truly love for you to serve as a special part of loving our friends at Joyful Place and providing Respite Care. For more information, please email joyful@shalimar-umc.org.
A special part of every activity we share as a Church includes attention given to everyone’s well-being and safety in God’s love. The Church at Shalimar has a wonderful trained and scheduled team of ministry participants who assist with providing this kind of loving care. Mr. Scott Solomon is our Security Team Leader, and along with six other friends, they want to invite more of our Church Friends to come into this very special ministry. Please write about your interest on your Connect card next to your name or contact Scott, Pastor Alan, or the Church Office to become a part of providing Jesus’ love in a very important manner.
With the start of school, please join everyone as we share a dinner and time of fellowship together at 5:00 pm on August 21st. Our Student Ministries with Small Groups starts after the meal at 5:30 pm and Kids Club for Kindergarteners through 5th grade begins at 5:30 pm. Invite others as we come together, not just to share a meal but to experience spiritual fellowship (Koinonia) in the Body of Christ. For more information or to help with Student Ministries, contact Chris Bennett, Director of Student Ministries. Sarah Hicks, our Director of Children’s Ministries can answer questions and can assist getting your kids involved. We would love for you to be ministry helpers in these wonderful areas.
Name tags are an essential part of greeting each other and enriching life in the Body of Christ. Pastor Alan wants to INVITE 3 or 4 friends in Christ to share in this important and timely need to make new Name Tags for our Church. If you can be part of this short-term ministry project, please contact Tanner Dubose or Karen Cardinez at the Church Office. To receive your new Name Tag for The Church at Shalimar, either write on your Connect Card “New Name Tag” and the preferred correct name you want to use or contact the Church Office. Please write legibly if you wish to request a new name tag.
Flower arrangements and roses can be given to the glory of God and displayed each week in the Sanctuary worship services. Reservations for altar flowers can be made using the reservation book in the Sanctuary Narthex or by calling the Church Office at (850) 651–0721
Throughout the summer, volunteers have been in action here at The Church at Shalimar and have not stopped. From serving weekly on our Audio/Visual/Lighting team, being an Usher, greeting congregants as they come in, serving communion, or anything in between, we thank you for your time, talents, and willingness to serve. The life of the church and the church itself would not be possible without you. Each week, we have approximately 80 volunteers that serve here between many different ministries, and we would love to have you serve as well. To learn more, please visit https:// shalimar-umc.org/emim. We have a spot for everybody, including you. No experience is necessary.
The month of July has been a whirlwind as we worked to transition from our home in Fort Walton Beach to our temporary home in Wetumpka, just north of Montgomery. Also, we’ve been working to wrap up ministry at Shalimar while beginning everything with the folks at Wesley Church. I say all this to apologize for the lateness of this word to you!!
Rhonda and I are so grateful and thankful for each of you as we shared ministry together for 12 years. Our last Sunday with you on June 30 was absolutely wonderful and we thank you from the depths of our hearts for your kindness, encouragement, and generosity. Our whole family was overwhelmed with the food, decorations, words, flash-mob, gifts, and the love that was shown to us. We have never felt so loved and appreciated. Thank you to each of you for everything you did for us.
Our special thanks go to the Staff-Parish Relations Committee, the Youth Choir, the Chancel Choir, Chef Heyward, Ben Savage, Dave and Alice Biggar, and Charlie and Kathy Curry. We will remember this day with fondness for a very, very long time!!
I also want to thank my pastoral ministry partner, Rev. Dr. Alan McBride. Alan’s sending and words of encouragement at the end of both patriotic celebrations were touching, encouraging, and challenging. Alan has been and continues to be a great man of God who seeks to lead God’s people with love and conviction while leading with and proclaiming the strong Word of God.
Our prayers continue for each of you as you move into the future as God leads and guides. I know that God has great plans for The Church at Shalimar and that you will continue to worship our God in spirit and in truth. We thank our God for every remembrance of you and will continually say of our time together…
Praise God From Whom All Blessing Flow!

Ladies, I hope you will consider joining us as we engage in Christian fellowship and godly growth through Bible study.
Splash of Joy will begin this 8-session study on September 4, 2024, at 9:30 in room 207 of the FLC. To reserve a book or if you have questions, please contact Cathie Buckman at 850-797-6936 or cathiebuckman@gmail.com. We look forward to welcoming you.
Are you passionate about helping people feel welcome and enjoy themselves over a delicious meal? If so, consider serving on the Hospitality Team during the weekly fellowship time at Wednesday night dinner and Sunday morning brunch. Contact Chef Heyward McKenzie during the fellowship times for more information.
If Fellowship Dinner is not on your plate, then we have other opportunities! God has designed us with a unique combination of gifts, passions, and life experiences to spread the Gospel. Let us know which areas of ministry you want to serve in by completing an Every Member In Ministry (EMIM) form at shalimar-umc.org/emim.
The back and front story here is that our library, in existence for many years, has been “re-purposed” in a sense into a fun and lively Childrens’ Center! The former library space is ground zero now for our kids, our future! The enlargements and improvements are amazing, thanks to a few visionary volunteers who saw great potential and possibilities in already-existing spaces and others who wisely recognized growing ministries in those spaces! We are blessed as a church to have folks who are able to imagine and foresee possibilities, here’s to ALL who in one way or another, made the transformation a success story!
BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE LIBRARY BOOKS?
WHERE ARE THE BOOKCASES, LADEN WITH TONS OF RESEARCH, CURRICULUM, LITERATURE AND JUST GREAT READING MATERIALS?
GREAT QUESTIONS; here to be answered: All research and curriculum books and series are now in bookshelves in our Conference Room, formerly the church chapel. These are materials for digging deeper and/or for leading small groups in reflection and study. This is the center for all things studyrelated, if for yourself or your small groups of any kind. Take your time here, and understand that what you are being offered is access to a vast supply of reference material, carefully selected over many years to grow and know spiritually. Tables and chairs in the conference room make it easy to peruse and use.
The childrens’ book collection, one of the best we believe, is now in the Childrens’ Center, very much a part of that ministry. Again, books for kids were all carefully chosen with the common goal of lifting and loving kids.
All other books are now on book shelves on the 2nd floor of our FLC and especially arranged in Room 209 there. ALL books are yours for the having no more checking out or in, no strings attached! Just help yourselves; keep, share, or bring back. Easy-peasy!
A most exciting part of the re-purpose project was the creation of an “Upper Room” in FLC room 209. Step into a quiet and comfy room, turn on a lamp or two, and enjoy being surrounded by books and decor that soothe and perhaps inspire. It’s a place for reading, reflection, visiting one on one, or for a small group gathering, warm and welcoming. Again, when you find a book you’d like to read, just take it. And if you want to meet there with someone special or host a small group, a table and 8-10 chairs, a white board, pens and pencils are there, but for those occasions, please reserve the space with the church office.
And THAT’S HOW TO RE-PURPOSE A CHURCH LIBRARY!!!
