Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:30am in-person and 11:15am rebroadcasted on Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 8:30am service. Conn ect At 10:15am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Lead Pastor's Report to Charge Conference Part 2 My report this week to the Annual Charge Conference (October 11, 2:30 PM) is way too long for one Beacon article. As a result, I am sharing over three Beacon articles. This week is part 2. Our new Fall season has been initiated with new discipleship opportunities. The pastors and laity are creating classes and resuming classes that we call small groups. At this point, each pastor is planning to lead at least one class with our renewed discipleship focus. In the final months of 2020, we now have opportunities in person (following COVID-19 guidelines) and by ZOOM. We expect these discipleship opportunities to continue to increase in options and participation in 2021. Our wineskin is also being shaped with new budget realities. We have begun the painful process of eliminating staff positions and other budget reductions. As a result, we have reduced budget requirements for 2020 and are reducing our budget for 2021. In these uncertain times, we must assume planning more conservative budgets is good stewardship. One of the benefits of budget reduction is that it sharpens our focus for greater fruitfulness. As we reduce our budget, we also anticipate God is at work reshaping His church's future growth. We are now in the process of phasing back our "in-person" worship. This is a process that will not happen overnight. We need the gift of patience. In the meantime, how is God at work now? We are strengthening our current worship opportunities for now and the future. Shalimar UMC will continue to offer strong traditional worship, ancient future worship, and contemporary worship! We are very committed to all three styles of worship.

We are excited to add an evangelism team with Lee Orr as the chair. Evangelism will be one of our major initiatives for 2021. The plans are to educate and inspire our entire congregation to be evangelists in their own way. This rebirth of evangelism goes hand-in-hand with our discipleship goals. Evangelism will seek to draw new people into the church, and discipleship develops them as disciples.
As a church, there are numerous ways we are coming back and renewing as a church! Let me list some of the ways. •
In February 2020, we had a sermon series on forgiveness. This was needed for our congregation. 2019 had been a difficult year for us. In this series, in one of the messages, I asked the congregation to forgive my leadership in 2019. 2019 was my most challenging year of ministry. Amazingly, 2020 is becoming one of my best years in ministry even with COVID-19 challenges, division of our country challenges, hurricane challenges, and economic challenges! I have my joy back! And even better, I believe the church is getting its joy back too!
•
The spirit within our congregation is much better this year than last year. God has done amazing healing, and there is a greater sense of unity. The spirit of generosity of our congregation is growing through this crazy year. We are not likely to have a record year of giving but considering all the challenges; this will be our most remarkable year of giving!
•
We are making changes to our leadership wineskin. There is a renewed emphasis on expectations for our leaders. We are prayerfully looking to those that are living out their membership vows. This includes doing everything in your power to strengthen the church ministries. This means to live out our membership vows of PRAYERS, PRESENCE,

GIFTS, SERVICE, and WITNESS. Moving forward into 2021, we will have a sharper focus on minimum requirements for our church leaders. Our Lay Leadership Team is reflecting this in the 2021 nominations we will submit to the Charge Conference. Next week will be part three of this pastor's report. May the Lord bless you and keep you this week. Thanks for all you are doing to strengthen the ministry of the church. Shalom, Philip

A Word From Pastor Brad It is with very mixed emotions that I share with you our pianist, Joel Lane is retiring from his job at First City Bank and will be moving to Indiana at the end of this year. We are so very happy for Joel and Cheryl for this great milestone as Joel has been a part of First City Bank for over 35 years. Joel has worked and served with distinction, and we are proud of him!
With that, we have the very sad part of this. Joel has served as our pianist since the beginning of 2017. I truly can say that he is one of the most talented and gifted musicians with which I’ve had the pleasure of serving. His talent is very evident, as well as is his Christian character and commitment. We will miss Joel very much! Thank you, Joel, for your years of ministry here and all the other places God has used you. Thank you, Joel, for your Christ-like spirit and dedication. Thank you, Joel, for how you have led us to the throne of grace during our times of worship. We also thank Cheryl for serving in our Chancel Choir and Monica with her sweet spirit. We pray God’s blessings on the Lanes as they prepare to move and begin this next chapter in their lives. Church family, we will begin the process of finding our next pianist in a few weeks. Please be in prayer for the person God has already selected. Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow!

A Word From Pastor Faith Using the New Church App We're so excited about our new church app. If you haven't realized how excited I am by how much I've talked about it, I'm EXCITED!! The reason I’m excited, is the app will make it easier for us to stay connected. In the past two years, we have received more phone calls than we can count about people not receiving information we have emailed out. Why? Our emails are lost in people's junk folders. With the church app, all the information you need is right there. You can read blogs and ministry celebrations in the story section, see upcoming events, watch Livestream, check into service, submit prayer requests, listen to a sermon you missed, and so much more. Tips for using the app: • Menu: The ≡ symbol in the top right is your menu button. It's how you can access your settings, Inbox, search for a specific sermon, and return to the main screen. Clicking ShalimarUMC takes you back home. • Push Notifications: Go ahead and enable the push notifications and location. This will allow us to send you updates when things are added. You can customize your notifications to get subgroups. Click the Inbox to see your notifications again. • Watch: You can watch all our Livestreams right from the app. Everything you need for service is right there. Click the service you want to watch or Sunday School. You'll see who is preaching, the scripture, and who is leading the music. The video will play automatically. Double tap it to make it full screen. The chat window is open all the time. Click Join to say good morning to the others online. The worship attendance form is at the bottom. Click the < symbol in the top left to return to the main screen. • Attendance: If you are sitting in worship, you can record your attendance by clicking the attendance block. There is a prayer option at the end so that you can add prayer requests. Click the < symbol in the top left to return to the main screen.

A Word From Our Prayer Team 31-Day Praying for Your Pastor Challenge Pastor Appreciation month is October and it is my hope that you already pray for SUMC and our pastors on a regular basis. On behalf of the Tuesday Night Prayer Group and the Prayer Ministry Team, I would like to invite each of you to join us in a commitment to pray for our Pastors (Pastor Philip, Pastor Brad, Pastor Matt, Pastor Faith, and Pastor David) each day during the month of October. We hope that we can count on your support by praying for our Pastors and SUMC for the 31 days of October. We are not asking for a time of day, only that you commit to pray daily for each of the pastors and for SUMC. You can find a “30 day Pray for Your Pastors Challenge to aid you in praying daily on the website at shalimar-umc.org/blog/2020/10/01/ pastor-appreciation-month. The guide is for 30 days but I feel that after 30 days of this challenge, we should be able to pray at least one day without a guide. I know some of you are already praying for our pastors, and I thank you for doing so. With all that is happening in this world right now, Prayer is more important than ever. What better way to help do our part in changing the world than to start right here at SUMC. I recently heard someone say we need to "Pray Long and Pray Hard." It is my belief that Prayer does make a difference so please join us in praying for our pastors each day during the month October and hopefully every day of the year. This could very well be the best gift you could ever give to our pastors. "God begin answering when the Prayer is made. Prayer triggers the actions in Heaven." Max Lucado "Before Amen". Thank you in advance for your support, Jim Brantley SUMC Prayer Ministry Team

Week 25 has come and gone! By the time you read this, we will have been open for half a year already! We started off working out of an SUV and now a more permanent home. On another note of good news, Destin Harvest came back this week, which is a huge help! We did not get as much meat as we usually do, but it was certainly better than last week. The people are happy with whatever they can get. A lady stopped by who lives in the neighborhood. She commented that we have a food pantry here in Shalimar and expressed how great that is! More importantly, she asked what we needed because she was going to the store to bring us back whatever we needed. I guess the word is getting out; we are here!

A Word From Our Librarian CHECK IT OUT!!! Hope you’ve heard that our SUMC Library has re-opened! We have opened our doors on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10am-2pm, and of course on Sundays until noon-ish! Library volunteers have been hard at work cleaning, sorting, and getting ready for a full-time re-opening very soon! Our shelves are delightfully full; the children's area, is bright and shiny with lots of wonderful new books; and the table is “set” with our newest additions for your reading and learning.
Before telling you of our newest acquisitions, we need to ask a favor. Please look around for books borrowed a “while ago” and drop them off in library return box or in the office. We are particularly missing Nancy Drew books, Berenstain Bear, Magic Tree House books, and even some of the beloved Dr. Seuss collection are missing. Grown-up books we’re looking for include those by authors Lynn Austin, Eugenia Price, Lee Strobel, and Lori Wick. We can’t give “hugs” at this time, but if you will kindly look around and return some of our book treasures, we’ll celebrate you in our hearts! Stay well and come visit your church library soon!

Blessings for Children
1 Peter 4:10 "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others...." Through this church family's generosity and support, Blessings for Children strives to meet the many needs of the children in our community by providing limited clothing, diapers, personal care items, and school supplies, along with receiving prayer concerns that our church's prayer team lifts up to our gracious Heavenly Father. As much as we would like to, we cannot meet every need a family may have. However, scripture tells us in 1 Peter, "each of us should use whatever gift we have received to serve others‌." and while this takes place daily throughout this church, I want you to know how those gifts were shared recently at our ministry. Two women came to the Blessings for Children house to see what our ministry could do to help the eight children they were struggling to provide for together in one home. While we were able to assist in the ways we could as a ministry, there were other needs we had no idea how to meet. They had no air conditioning in their home and a broken refrigerator. But because this church family is deep in gifts and skills and willingness to serve and share, we called Pastor Brad to see if there were other ways our church might help. He came right over to the house to talk with the women, heard their situation, and prayed with them while offering to reach out to others in our congregation with specific skills and gifts that might help with their particular needs. And did they ever help! Ed Keller, John Foeller, and William Schenck went right over to their home. They identified and repaired the problems with the air conditioning. Then went above and beyond in providing a replacement refrigerator! The rest of verse 1 Peter 4:10 goes on to say, "....as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." Blessings for Children is so grateful to all in our church family who are faithful stewards in sharing their gifts, skills, and time to meet needs wherever and whatever they are! If you would like to join with us at Blessings for Children in sharing your gifts, skills, and service, please consider any of the following: Please pray for the ministry and all who participate.
Consider donating items we distribute to the children: Diapers and pullups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks, underwear, children's toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash or soap, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute is on our website at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesday from 11:30 am - 3:30 pm. Children's bibles and bible stories and activity books are also a joy to receive and distribute! Spanish language Bibles are always needed! A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children allows us to shop for needed items. New volunteers are always welcome! There is no regular commitment required.
