Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:30am in-person and 11:15am rebroadcasted on Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 8:30am service. Conn ect At 10:15am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Part One of Lead Pastor's Report to the Charge Conference In the coming weeks, I will be sharing segments of my annual report to Charge Conference for the year 2020. The Charge Conference report gives a yearly review, shares realities and hopes for the upcoming years. This week is part one. Jesus says you cannot put new wine in old wineskins. "No one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved." (Luke 5:37-38). Old Wineskins in Jesus' teaching was rigid and inflexible. The chemistry of new wine requires expansion. If the old wineskin does not stretch, the wineskin will burst, and the new wine spills and is lost. As you read this report, think of the wineskin as our church structures and the new wine as God at work seeking to reshape His Church. I believe the Church will COME BACK stronger than ever after this season of COVID-19! The year 2020 has brought new realities! COVID-19 has made this a crazy year! The old wineskin of what we knew in the past will likely not ever be the same. Does this mean the Church is in trouble? Absolutely not! God is at work in such time reshaping our structures and seeking to pour in the new wine of abundant life! There is good news. Jesus brings "new wine" to offer us a new path for present days and for the future. We at Shalimar are intentionally moving ahead, seeking God's guidance on changes to our wineskin, and seeking the new wine of Jesus! There is new wine at Shalimar! A vision has been cast for the congregation to have 1,000 persons involved in discipleship each week by the end of 2022! This vision impacts our

planning for the rest of the year and into next year! Even in a year as uncertain as 2020, we are taking active steps now to bring momentum to the vision of having 1,000 persons weekly in discipleship. Whether it be a small group, weekly study, Bible study, prayer group, or mission in action, we look for the next three years to be growing in making disciples! We are seeking to follow Jesus, who commanded us "go and make disciples of all nations." Matthew 28:19a The wineskin is beginning to expand for new discipleship to happen throughout Shalimar UMC. We already have numerous discipleship groups in 2020. Just before COVID limitations started in March, we had launched 11 different 144 discipleship groups. Amazingly with remarkable resilience, these small groups made it through the twelve-week journey through Zoom. Zoom not only became an option for 144 but also some of our Sunday School classes. Our weekly pastor's class was also able to continue through Zoom. Our new wineskins have been shaped by our COVID-19 Task Force Team. These laypersons have a wide range of wisdom and expertise in preparing our congregation for COVID-19 precautions and protocols. The Task Force has given us recommendations for navigating these uncharted waters. We are grateful for their leadership in advising us on matters that have no easy answers. Most of all, I am grateful for their Christian spirit for the benefit of our congregation and community. Our wineskin has broadened to embrace the opportunities of expanding the quality of Livestream, ZOOM, and technology available. We have made significant strides this year as a church with our virtual presence and impact. We have had live streamers join our sermons from half the states in the

United States. Proclaiming the good news of Jesus remains our mission, but our wineskin is new. In February, almost as a sign of things to come (just before Coronavirus came to the forefront), Rev. Faith Parry made the shift to become our Communication Pastor. Some would have asked before COVID-19, "Why do we need a communication pastor?" This change has proved to be prophetic. This change has been invaluable in navigating the loss of in-person worship and other restrictions of COVID19. This new role of Communication Pastor has been indispensable in keeping our congregation connected when we have been physically distanced as a church body. Next week I will focus on part 2, featuring some of the other highlights from this year in ministry and how God is changing our wineskin and shaping us with His new wine! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org

A Word From Pastor Brad It is with very mixed emotions that I share with you our pianist, Joel Lane is retiring from his job at First City Bank and will be moving to Indiana at the end of this year. We are so very happy for Joel and Cheryl for this great milestone as Joel has been a part of First City Bank for over 35 years. Joel has worked and served with distinction, and we are proud of him!

With that, we have the very sad part of this. Joel has served as our pianist since the beginning of 2017. I truly can say that he is one of the most talented and gifted musicians with which I’ve had the pleasure of serving. His talent is very evident, as well as is his Christian character and commitment. We will miss Joel very much! Thank you, Joel, for your years of ministry here and all the other places God has used you. Thank you, Joel, for your Christ-like spirit and dedication. Thank you, Joel, for how you have led us to the throne of grace during our times of worship. We also thank Cheryl for serving in our Chancel Choir and Monica with her sweet spirit. We pray God’s blessings on the Lanes as they prepare to move and begin this next chapter in their lives. Church family, we will begin the process of finding our next pianist in a few weeks. Please be in prayer for the person God has already selected. Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow!

A Word From Pastor Faith Using the New Church App We're so excited about our new church app. If you haven't realized how excited I am by how much I've talked about it, I'm EXCITED!! The reason I’m excited, is the app will make it easier for us to stay connected. In the past two years, we have received more phone calls than we can count about people not receiving information we have emailed out. Why? Our emails are lost in people's junk folders. With the church app, all the information you need is right there. You can read blogs and ministry celebrations in the story section, see upcoming events, watch Livestream, check into service, submit prayer requests, listen to a sermon you missed, and so much more. We had a big week after Hurricane Sally. Our main supplier of meat and produce didn’t deliver anything this week because of the aftermath of the hurricane. We had no idea how we were going to make it through the week, but through your donations we made it through Friday! An interesting story happened on Wednesday. We had people lined up waiting to be served. Sandra gave out the last loaf of bread to a woman who has visited us before. Another man who walked to The Bread House was told that we didn’t have any more bread. The woman turned to the man and gave her bread to him. It reminded me that those we serve have kind hearts for those less fortunate than themselves. She was a witness to those around us. We have stories everyday of the hope and joy the Bread House brings to those in need! Thank you, Shalimar UMC, for helping to make this happen and giving these folks HOPE!

Blessings for Children 1 Peter 4:10 "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others...." Through this church family's generosity and support, Blessings for Children strives to meet the many needs of the children in our community by providing limited clothing, diapers, personal care items, and school supplies, along with receiving prayer concerns that our church's prayer team lifts up to our gracious Heavenly Father. As much as we would like to, we cannot meet every need a family may have. However, scripture tells us in 1 Peter, "each of us should use whatever gift we have received to serve others‌." and while this takes place daily throughout this church, I want you to know how those gifts were shared recently at our ministry. Two women came to the Blessings for Children house to see what our ministry could do to help the eight children they were struggling to provide for together in one home. While we were able to assist in the ways we could as a ministry, there were other needs we had no idea how to meet. They had no air conditioning in their home and a broken refrigerator. But because this church family is deep in gifts and skills and willingness to serve and share, we called Pastor Brad to see if there were other ways our church might help. He came right over to the house to talk with the women, heard their situation, and prayed with them while offering to reach out to others in our congregation with specific skills and gifts that might help with their particular needs. And did they ever help! Ed Keller, John Foeller, and William Schenck went right over to their home. They identified and repaired the problems with the air conditioning. Then went above and beyond in providing a replacement refrigerator! The rest of verse 1 Peter 4:10 goes on to say, "....as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." Blessings for Children is so grateful to all in our church family who are faithful stewards in sharing their gifts, skills, and time to meet needs wherever and whatever they are! If you would like to join with us at Blessings for Children in sharing your gifts, skills, and service, please consider any of the following: Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Consider donating items we distribute to the children: Diapers and pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks, underwear, children's toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash or soap, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute is on our website at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-

for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesday from 11:30 am - 3:30 pm. Children's bibles and bible stories and activity books are also a joy to receive and distribute! Spanish language Bibles are always needed! A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children allows us to shop for needed items. New volunteers are always welcome! There is no regular commitment required.
