Philip’s Focus Learning from History and Including All as Jesus I choose to remain a United Methodist because we know our denomination is more than a "fad" or a "short-lived movement." We can learn from our rich history, and we can be sparred some of the same mistakes of history. Our history goes back 237 years, and this is simultaneous with the birth of our Nation. As a result, Methodism and American history have much in common. Methodism has been refined and survived the challenges of early colonialism, civil war and remains a strong religious anchor in the midst of adverse winds of great division today. One of the ways we can help is to live out our discipleship as Jesus teaches us. We must get out of our vacuum and love people different from us. Our sermon this Sunday will be from the Gospel of John (chapter 4), with Jesus breaking through barriers to love the "woman at the well." As we better understand Jesus invites all into His Kingdom - our better understanding of persons with different backgrounds becomes even more crucial. We can help bring our country together when we better understand one another. This is true, especially in the church. After all, the church seems to continue to mirror our society more than the teachings of Jesus. We need to change this! One way we change is better appreciate all people through history. A couple of years ago, one of our members asked if I would raise awareness that February is Black History Month. I have decided with all the racial unrest in our country; this is a good year to do just that! Did you know the Methodist history tree also includes significant both significant European and African American leaders? We are indebted to Bishop Richard Allen, the first African American Bishop. He was the first ordained black pastor in America in 1794. My good friend and historian Dr. John Veasley of Pensacola, Florida, shares this concise history of Bishop Allen's significance. My African American-Heritage Note (FEB 7) BISHOP RICHARD ALLEN (1760-1831) was born into slavery in Philadelphia, PA, on
February 14, 1760. His family were sold intact to Delaware farmer Stokeley Sturgis in 1767. He converted to Methodism at the age of 17 after hearing a white itinerant Methodist preacher rail against slavery. Sturgis, who had already sold Richard's mother and three siblings, also converted and eventually allowed Richard and his brother to purchase their freedom for $2,000 each. Richard took the last name "Allen" and returned to Philadelphia, working odd jobs and as a shoemaker and manager of a chimney-sweeping company. He soon joined St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church, where blacks and whites worshiped together. He became an assistant minister and conducted prayer meetings for blacks. In 1787, Rev. Absalom Jones and Allen had helped found the Free African Society (FAS), a nondenominational religious mutual-aid society dedicated to helping the black community. When officials at St. George's pulled blacks off their knees while praying, FAS members realized how far American Methodists would go to enforce racial discrimination against blacks. Allen, frustrated by limitations placed on him and black parishioners, left St. George, intending to create an independent Methodist church. In 1794, Allen and 10 FAS members founded the Bethel Church in an old blacksmith's shop with Allen as their pastor. In 1799, Allen became the first black to be ordained in ministry in the Methodist Episcopal Church. To establish Bethel's independence from interfering white Methodists, Allen successfully sued in the Pennsylvania courts in 1807 and 1815 for his congregation's right to exist as an independent institution. Bethel became known as "Mother Bethel" in 1816 when Allen called black Methodists in other middle Atlantic communities facing racial and religious restrictions to meet in Philadelphia to form a new Wesleyan denomination. And the first national black church in America - the African Methodist Episcopal Church. At this establishing of the first national black church in the US, Allen became its first bishop. Today, the AME church boasts over 2.5 million members over five continents. As we encounter the stability of great history in our church, let us be more aware God has broadened the church through diversity in leadership. Our inclusiveness of all will be our focus this Sunday. We still have much work to do to make the church inclusive of all of God's children. We can learn from history, be transformed in Christ as his disciple in the present, and become the Church God seeks in the future! Shalom, Philip

The Easter Lily Project is a way to honor or remember someone and help others at the same time. All proceeds go to support the following missions. 1) Blessings for Children - In its third year of operation as a Shalimar United Methodist Church mission outreach ministry, Blessings for Children seeks to meet the needs of children in our community, ages infant through fifth grade. Our volunteers seek to share God’s love by providing new clothing, personal care items, and school supplies, along with Christian materials to encourage the entire family. 2) Bread House - In April 2020, Shalimar United Methodist Church established a ministry to provide food to the community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The food pantry evolved to become the Bread House which is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday to provide canned food, produce, milk, eggs, bread, and meat for our neighbors in need. Frozen meat and additional produce became menu options as a result of our collaboration with Destin Harvest. The Bread House seeks to provide for people experiencing food insecurity by allowing them to visit as needed. To date the Bread House has served over 40-tons of food to over 8000 individuals. 3) Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida - Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida strive to "enrich the lives of older adults and all those who serve them in faith-
based communities” located in both Northwest Florida and Alabama. 4) Safe Connections - The 1996 Shalimar United Methodist Church Missions Committee initiated Safe Connections (formerly called the Judge Ben Gordon Family Visitation Center) to meet a growing community needs for families in crisis. Safe Connections provides a nurturing environment and trained monitors to ensure safety for vulnerable children during supervised visitation time and monitored custody exchanges. Safe Connections also provides parenting classes, resources, and referrals to parents to help them become the safe and stable parents every child deserves. In the face of extraordinarily difficult circumstances presented during 2020, Safe Connections rose to the challenge and accomplished 3,972 individual services with thoughtfully updated safety and health protocols. We will honor your loved ones in the Beacon and on service slides April 4, 2021. You may donate any amount. Send an email to office@shalimar-umc.org, download a form from the website, or drop off a note at the office with the following information: • Your Name • Donation Amount • Message you would like to place in Beacon honoring or remembering a loved one

Blessings for Children
How You Can Help Refer Families The question often comes up about how the families that visit Blessings for Children at the #10 2nd St. house hear about our ministry. We have placed flyers across our community at places that support families and women with children to include: churches, Fresh Start, Sharing and Caring, the WIC office at the Health Dept., Head Start, consignment shops for children’s clothes, Opportunity Place, local schools, and shelters and agencies. We try to ask the families that visit how they heard about Blessings for Children, and more and more, we hear “my neighbor,” “my sister,” or “my friend told me.” And just as we see so often, a personal invitation is the best way to share information! If you work with a family that you know who may be struggling, have a neighbor with needs, your child has a friend doing without, you serve with a young military father or mother who may need a helping hand, or you volunteer at another agency/school and become aware of families with children who are dealing with hardships, please give them a personal invitation to visit our outreach mission on Wednesdays from 123:30pm. If you want Blessings for Children flyers to distribute where you work or serve, please contact Mary Jane Robertson (contact info below). If you know a family but need to arrange for another time or way to help them, please reach out. We thank you for being the eyes of Jesus as we see needs that we can help meet. If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider:
• Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance.
• Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5, and 6 in
particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings -for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.
New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm
From a Online Viewer I SO enjoy livestreaming the Connect service here in Vero Beach, FL. We're living here temporarily while our new home is being built in a retirement community near Jacksonville. We're taking advantage of the livestreaming until more people have their vaccines, and until we church shop when we move to our new home. Anyhow, I'm emailing this morning to commend the audio visual team. We on livestream cannot see the screen with the words of the song, so we're dependent upon whoever displays the subtitles on our monitors. In an all music service the subtitles for singing along become an all important part of the service. The subtitles have to be correct, match the words of the song, and be timed to allow the reader to know not only what words are being sung now, but which words are next. I'm sure there's an art to timing this. I would have to say, this hasn't always been done well in the past. BUT, this morning it was almost perfect!!
So, I don't know if you have a new person doing it, or whether the new audio visual setup allows it to be done better, but please keep doing what you did this morning. And, please thank whoever might be responsible for a job well done. Many thanks for all you do, Terry Silvester
A Word From Our Librarian CHECK IT OUT! HEY THERE! It is “me” again, back in the SUMC library, returning the excellent books I checked out last week. Having more time this week, I will take a deeper dive into what this calm and quiet place has to offer. First, to return these books. Apparently, you drop them into the “Return Books Here” box on the checkout counter. How easy is that? Now, to browse. The Reference section in the library is impressive. I doubt I will check any out. Since I am here, I will have a look around. As expected, the reference section has many big old Bible commentaries, individual books of the Bible, and numerous different Bibles to include an unexpected Korean edition and, appropriately, a Hebrew Bible! I “get it” Jesus was a Jew! As those commercials promise, “Wait, there’s more!” We have an entire shelf of books about Methodism, John Wesley, and a little section of books written by Methodist ministers! And that author I have heard about, C.S. Lewis, his are here, as well. Didn’t C.S. Lewis write books about Narnia? I wonder. But what to check out today is the goal, and I think I will begin with this beautifully illustrated book called The Journeys of Jesus. It catches my eye, a pretty picture book, and I figure this might be an excellent place to begin to know more about Him. As if, propelled by the book, I am standing in the middle of the precious Children’s area. It would be fun to check out a few of these lovely books about Jesus for the kids. I can “see” it now, my picture book in my lap. The kids beside me looking at the beautiful photos and us learning together. Then, picking up the children’s books to read out loud! What a beautiful, hopeful, purposeful mind’s picture it is! Hurriedly now, passing by those shelves of fiction (next time!), I check out my treasure trove of Jesus books. I am anxious to get home to those kids! One more light bulb goes off as I leave this special place. I will bring the children next time! They deserve to experience the SUMC Library! Especially, they deserve to know more about Jesus!
Prayer Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place.
