The Beacon February 7, 2021
Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. All services can be found online at Shalimar-umc.org.
O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.
Here's what you need to know this week. The Week of Sunday, February 7th
•
AV Transformation: We had a transformation take place in the Sanctuary balcony. New housings and tables have been built to hold our AV equipment. We're so thankful to AJ Parry and Ron Gross for their help in this project. We have a seat for you if you'd like to join our AVL team. We're actively training new volunteers, no experience necessary. If you can click a mouse, we can teach you how to run audio, lights, live stream, and lyrics. Anyone from 6th grade to 106 is welcome. Contact Ben to learn more.
•
Ash Wednesday - On Feb 17th, we will have a drive-through event at 7am, a service in the Sanctuary at 12pm, and a service in the gym at 6pm for Ash Wednesday. Both services will have options for touch or a no-touch way to participate. If you would like ashes mailed to your house, please call the church office. We will also have ways you can participate even if you don't
have ashes. •
Lent Discipleship Opportunities - We have multiple ways you can draw closer to God during the season of Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. You'll find all of these opportunities listed on our website by clicking the Lent Banner at the top of the webpage. We have two Tuesday Bible studies: one on Zoom at noon and one in-person at 6pm. There are also two Think Tanks to help us move closer to our goal of 1,000 in discipleship weekly. These are on Monday at 6pm and are limited to 12 persons per group. Visit shalimar-umc.org/lent for more details.
•
Confirmation: Confirmation is a class for students to learn the basics of the Christian faith. All students, 6th-12th grade, are invited to participate. 4-weeks of classes start next Sun, Feb 14th at 9:30am. The classes are followed up by a retreat Mar 13th & 14th and a service on Mar 21st in the 11:07am service, where any student who wishes can share their faith publicly, be baptized, and join the church.

Philip’s Focus State of Shalimar United Methodist Church 2021 As a part of our Nation's fabric, one tradition is customary to give a State of the Union Address for late January. Somewhere along the way, I began a tradition by giving the "state of the church" each January. In a year of multiple challenges, I am delighted to share the "state of the church" is stronger than we may think! Below is the printed version.
• • • • •
35,800 persons worshipped with us last year by Livestream and in person. Of the 35,800, 23,523 persons worshipped by Livestream. At least 28 states worshipped with us through live stream. Wisconsin had a large following. One person in Wisconsin wrote the following. Hi All: From the north woods of Wisconsin with a smiley face. Enclosed is a donation for your church. We are regular viewers of your Sunday morning live stream at 8 am. We both had COVID-19 back in October and November. Sad face. God Bless America! (you can see thank you note later in Beacon)

There was no interruption of official church meetings - most by ZOOM. • The Bread House was birthed and has been in operation for almost a year. In operation 127 days, if you translated into 8-hour workdays with 30 volunteers, that would be 776 8hour workdays. Only closed Christmas and New Year's • Blessings for Children has helped so many families with practical needs in this time of the pandemic. • The musical groups have lead worship every Sunday, providing worship leadership during 2020. Our growing AV team answered the bell all 52 Sundays of 2020! They are "rock stars." We had 919 persons participating in the discipleship of Shalimar UMC for 2020. • Pastors spent over a month of time on the telephone making calls to our congregation. If you combined the 3,000 pastoral calls, it would be one and a half months non-stop calling. • After sitting quietly for a year, Cross Corner is now being renovated and is in use! • A new fire pit was built on campus!

SUMC held two outdoor Christmas Eve Services. (both well attended despite the cold and COVID) We formed a youth leadership team of 12 youth. Our preschool resumed, and there is nothing sweeter than the sounds of children singing "Buzz Buzz" and the director hearing them sing each day! We celebrate 32 young adults involving themselves in young adult ministry. There are signs of growth in the 11:07 worship service for the first time in 5 years. After School Care has resumed, and children do not want to leave at pick up time. Sometimes they are overheard sharing the Bible story they learned with their parents. Our missions team gave leadership to the church for 23,000 touches in our community. This includes the Bread House, Feeding the Gulf Coast, Sharing and Caring, Blessings for Children, the Thanksgiving Meal Ministry, and Faith Backpack. • The Angel Tree had a record of 197 children, and all were sponsored, making for a better Christmas. • The teenage gift card ministry had $8,200 given to support its ministry. As a result, 94 teenagers were given gift cards! A record for the four years of this ministry. • After a loan of upwards close to 4 million dollars a decade ago, in 2020, we quietly fell under 1 million dollars in our loan for Haverty's! • We again paid 100% apportionments paid to the greater church. The most amazing fact is that our 2020 pledges were paid at 99.13%! This is a record and speaks so well of the steadfastness of our congregation. This year we begin the march to 1,000 persons in discipleship every week!
This report reflects our church's positive movement and ministry in what was likely the most difficult year in our 70- year history. Thanks be to God! None of this would be possible without God's faithfulness to His Church in such a time! Shalom, Philip

Pastor Philip and Lee Orr and leading two Think Tanks. As part of Philip's goal of reaching 1,000 weekly disciples, these two groups will allow you to come and share some big ideas to step out with God! The groups will start together in Cross Corner's Fellowship Hall. While combined, Philip will lead the group in some prayer and devotional reflections. Then, they will split up for focused conversation. Philip will lead a discussion around church discipleship, and Lee will lead a conversation around evangelism. Each group is limited to 12 people. Please contact each group leader directly if you wish to attend. Groups start February 15 @ 6:00 pm and go through March 22. Pastor Philip philip@shalimar-umc.org 850-607-1133

Week 42 was an exciting week for us. We had good crowds all week. But the excitement for this week was a surprise from our very own Children’s Preschool Program at SUMC, who brought in non-perishable items for the Bread House! It was great for the kids and a big help to the Bread House! Thank You, Kids, so much! Not only did we receive donations from our kids, but we also received four boxes of non-perishables from CDC Parents and Staff from Hurlburt! This was a complete surprise! It drives home the point that the Bread House is not just for SUMC, but it is a community staple! Thanks to everyone for all you do to support the Bread House!

Blessings for Children Expanding How We Bless Others If you have been reading these Blessings for Children articles, you probably know by now what services we share with the children who visit our ministry each week, but you may not know the oversight for those visits. When we began this ministry in 2019, our start-up team determined that we would serve each child six times over 12 months. Those six visits would result in the child receiving a total of 18 new tshirts, underwear, and pairs of socks (3 per visit), 270 diapers (45 per visit), along with the personal care items and school supplies we also share. That protocol continues into our 3rd year, but this year we have expanded it to add four (4) additional visits during the 12 months for children in need of diapers or pull-ups. Having access to accessible laundry services can be difficult when you have financial needs. We believe providing the additional diapers for the littlest ones in the family will help ease that burden. We are always so grateful for how our church family supports this ministry. If you are looking for a way to help a family in our community, please consider donating diapers, pull-ups, or wipes (we give one pack of wipes with each set of diapers or pull-ups). It has been and continues to be our most pressing need.
• Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children. Diapers (size 4, 5, and 6 in particular) and pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children's toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash or soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. You can find a complete list of items on the church website at shalimar -umc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesday from 11:30am-3:30pm. Children's bibles and bible stories and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute! And Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to shop for needed items. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm
IT'S A NEW STUDY!!!! Splash of Joy I will begin a new study on Wed, Feb 10th, 9:30-11:30. This brand new video led study, Elijah, by Priscilla Shirer promises to meet us where we are living today. Elijah emerged as the voice of unapologetic truth during a time of national crisis and moral decline. His ministry was marked by tenacious faith and holy fire - the same kind you need in order to remain steadfast in current culture. Would you be willing to commit to a 7-week study along with other women who are walking alongside you? Come join us in this adventure. Study guides will be handed out the first day of class and books will be $17.00. We will meet in the sanctuary. You may also join us by ZOOM if you prefer. https://zoom.us/j/898749041 Sara Michaelson will lead the study and you may direct questions to her at 850-865-3343.
