The Beacon February 24, 2019

Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.

O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and SEN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p Services Break F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. Traditions At 8:00 and 11:00am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Lent Focus Will Be the Gospel of Mark Lent normally begins in the month of February but this year does not start until March 6th. You might be interested to know that Ash Wednesday is always set forty six days before Easter which is pre-set on the calendar, but do you know how that date is determined? Hoyt Hickman in a Primer for Church Worship explains “you may have wondered why Easter falls on a different date each year. Like the Jewish Passover, it is determined by the phases of the moon. Early Christians debated the proper date for the Pascha and agreed in the fourth century that it, unlike the Jewish Passover, must always be celebrated on Sunday so that the weekly and yearly celebrations of Jesus’ resurrection reinforce each other. Easter in Western Europe came to be observed on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the first day of spring, which can place Easter as early as March 22nd or as late as April 25th. This is how Roman Catholics and Protestants still date Easter.” This year, Easter falls on April 21st. During this year’s 40 days of Lent, we will focus on the Gospel of Mark. Lent will begin with Ash Wednesday services on March 6th at 6am, 12pm, and 6pm. On March 7th, Shalimar will begin hosting a 40-day Mark Bible Study. This will occur each day in the Sanctuary at 6am (9am Saturdays and Sundays normal worship times). Workbooks will be available to help you stay on track by reading and reflecting on the Gospel of Mark during this 40-day journey. We hope you will add Lenten Commitments to your schedule so each day can begin with 40 days of Bible Study Through the Eyes of Mark. Livestream sessions will be available, so you can participate no matter where you are each day. The Lenten Sermon series will also focus on the Gospel of Mark. Among many of Jesus’ teachings, we will preach on announcing His Kingdom and teaching, faith, miracles, rebuking evil, and humility. Our community and church will be transformed as we open the pages and focus on these teachings from the Gospel.

After School Camp Recently, our Director of Camp Ministry, Dawn Rozofsky, had a parent’s appreciation party to thank all of our camp families for partnering with us to help raise their children. It was a great night for the adults, as the staff met new people, mothers shared stories, and fathers tried to sneak a second cupcake. It was also a family game night. The gym was teeming with children throwing balls, rolling hoops, and running races. I was glad to have this opportunity to meet parents and develop a relationship with them. I also wanted to know how the camp program was working from their perspective. Without exception, these parents were delighted to have us be part of their daily routine. For some, it was literally their only option to balance their work and home lives. Many of them have jobs that make it difficult for them to pick up their kids from school much less tend to them the rest of the day. They can continue their work, confident that a loving, competent team of caregivers pick their children up from school and bring them to a safe, nurturing, and educational environment. They know their children are given a combination of study time and physical activity and understand their children will not be subject to bullying or be exposed to unhealthy things on the internet. When they get home, they know their children’s homework will be complete and they can now enjoy the luxury of spending quality time with them. Each day, our after-school workers share a ten minute Bible study or devotional with the children. For some, this reinforces what they are being taught at home. For others, it is a first exposure to good news that they’ve never heard. They learn life lessons that will serve them in adulthood and develop qualities like courtesy, sharing, and positivity. Between school and home, our after school camp is truly a bright spot in their day. We can be proud of the way our after school camp reaches into the community to make a difference in the lives of these families. We are building relationships based on trust that I think will make both the church and the families stronger in the long run. You too can be a part of the magic as well with very little commitment. Spend just an hour a week reading to a child, helping with homework, or being the second adult on a bus run. You can help with snack time or watch over them as they play on our playground. Sometimes when a child has a bad day, they just need some personal attention. It isn’t hard and it’s so rewarding.
