Wors hi p Services Break F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. Traditions At 8:00 and 11:00am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus A New Prayer and Healing Service Has Begun This Summer Our church has started something new this summer! We will hold our second prayer and healing service July 14, at 12:30 in the sanctuary. This service is for all who have a desire to receive the prayers of others. If you are in need of healing, we invite you to come and have others pray with you. What kind of prayers for healing will we pray for at the service? We will read from the scriptures and pray for healing in a wide variety of areas.
If you have a physical illness If you want to give thanks for the healing God has already done If you have a relationship issue and seek forgiveness and restoration If you have a financial issue If you have fear that a situation has overtaken you If there is a stronghold in your life that needs defeating If you are seeking God’s will and would like others to pray with you If you are facing the fear of death If your life is at a crossroad and you are seeking God’s direction If your walk with Jesus is missing the joy
This service is to encourage everyone to be whole in body, mind, and in spirit and these are just some examples of what can be prayed for. Everyone is invited to come and pray, receive the prayers of others, or just be present. We will claim the promise of Book of James “Is there anyone of you in trouble? He should pray. Is there anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is there anyone of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.” We hope you will attend and invite others to participate as we pray for those who seek healing and wholeness in their lives. May God’s favor and blessings be on all of you this summer! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org
A Word about the Charitable Giving Shalimar UMC is a generous church! Aside from regular giving to the operating fund and no small amount given to designated projects and ministries, we also have a lot of giving to those in need. In the life of the church, we often become aware of the needs of people in our community and respond as a part of our mission to be the hands and feet of Christ. We have several avenues for making sure these needs are addressed. One of those is the Agape fund (Agape, from the Greek word for love). The Agape fund is a designated fund that makes money available for pastors to use as the need arises. People from the community are often beset by temporary hardship, and assistance to keep their utilities on or their car running can be a blessed relief. The staff works as a team to verify need and consider the appropriateness of the assistance. Generally we give the money directly to the company they need to pay, not to the individuals themselves. Also as a general rule, we try to avoid giving to the same person more than once. The idea is that we try to help them through a temporary crisis not create a chronic state of dependency. On average, we spend about $7000 per year through the Agape fund, and it is funded by individual giving specifically to the fund (not part of the operating budget). Another avenue for giving is the “Communion Rail fund. Whenever we serve communion, we offer the opportunity for people to leave money on the communion rail. It is a good spiritual exercise to consider the poor when receiving the body and blood of Christ. This money is accounted for separately distributed quarterly: 25% to Catholic Charities, 25% to Children in Crisis, and 50% to the Agape fund. Sometimes people want to give to help a particular person, often a member of our church. The same procedure applies as with the Agape fund. We verify need and consider the appropriateness. The money given for that particular person is treated separately and is always dispensed as quickly and discretely as possible.
continued
Of course, there are many other ways the people of Shalimar UMC give to help others. Individual classrooms give to various charities and people in need. People give money to offer camp scholarships to children who would otherwise not be able to go. We will sometimes have a special offering to support a particular effort to help others in need. For example, last year we gave many thousands of dollars in money and in donations to help victims of Hurricane Michael. All of these reflect the love that God has sown in our hearts. It is a blessing to be a blessing to others. One final word: Virtually all of our ministries are supported directly or indirectly through our general operating budget. All of the charitable giving described above is what we consider to be “second mile giving. It is money we give after we have given our basic tithe to the operation of the church. Without our operating budget, we would have no structure and no personnel to handle the other charitable giving. So thank you all for your generous support of our church and for your second mile giving to help those in need. Pastor Brian

Blessings for Children is an SUMC mission outreach to community families with children ages newborn through fifth grade. We have been operating since January 2019 out of the #10 2nd Street home behind the church, and we are open every Wednesday from noon to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers share God’s love and serve His children by providing clothing, personal care items, and school supplies. During the month of May, we were able to bless 41 children which brought the number of children served since our January opening to over 70. With your support, we have shared diapers, socks, underwear, t-shirts, toilet paper and other needed personal care items, along with school supplies. Every third Sunday of the month, you can bless the ministry and children by dropping any of these items in the narthex or Family Life Center lobby (a complete list of items can be found at sumc.io/blessings). We are happy to shop for the items for you if you would rather make a financial donation to the church (designate it for Blessings for Children). Through this ministry we are making a difference to these children and their families as we share God’s love, pray with them, invite them to participate in our church’s activities and provide real and needed help. Your prayers, your donations, and your gifts, are so appreciated, and we invite you to please stop by on Wednesday afternoons to see what God is doing through this ministry that you support! We would also welcome you as a volunteer!
