Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.
O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and SEN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p Services Break F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. Traditions At 8:00 and 11:00am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Happy 30th Anniversary Friendship Club! Last week, SUMC celebrated the Friendship Club’s 30th Anniversary with a wonderful gathering. Eighty-five people attended this festive day which included special recognition of the club’s original members, wonderful fellowship, an inspiring message by former Senior Pastor David Chunn, and a delicious lunch provided by Chef Heyward McKenzie. The Friendship Club began in 1989 by the initiative of Mrs. Clara Lucas. Over the last thirty years, the group has met each month (that’s well over 300 times) and participated in countless trips and excursions. For this celebration, Jon Sheperd compiled a slide show to celebrate the many faces in the Friendship Club through the years. There were also certificates of appreciation presented to original members Billy and Barbara Mills, Nadine Winterberger, and J.D. Qualls. We were also graced by the presence of Rev. David Chunn, Senior Pastor from 1993-2002, and his wife Carol. David provided an inspiring message reflecting on his years in ministry and his fond memories as Senior Pastor of Shalimar UMC. He also remembered many of the good things that happened during his ministry at Shalimar. Rev. Chunn stated that in his life of ministry he learned more from the churches he pastored, his staff, and his wife than he ever did in the classroom. We appreciate David and Carol for helping to make the Friendship Club’s 30th anniversary so special with their presence. This celebration was spectacularly well done by our present Friendship Club Leadership. Special thanks are extended to Jon and Kathie Sheperd who provided many exceptional touches both visibly and behind the scenes. We are so grateful for all Jon and Kathie do for Shalimar UMC! Finally, we want to thank Ollie Fay Flint for her vision to celebrate this day! Ollie Fay brought so much enthusiasm to the planning and execution of this event! Well done Ollie Fay! What a great day for the Friendship Club and Shalimar UMC! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org

Update On Disaster Relief As you probably know, we are coming up on the first anniversary of Hurricane Michael with Hurricane Dorian fresh in our memories. The Panama City area is still in a state of devastation and the wheels of recovery are turning too slowly for comfort. The pictures of the devastation coming in from the Bahamas are just heart wrenching. It is good to know that in cases like this, UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) is often first in and last out. One hundred percent of the dollars we send to UMCOR go straight to the field (overhead costs are funded by our apportionments). We are currently reassessing our ability as a church to be a place of refuge in the event of a disaster. Our facilities have become busier with the many ministries we are performing, and many of our volunteers are aging out. If you would like to help in times of disaster, we need to hear from you! In the wake of Hurricane Michael, the Alabama-West Florida conference has redoubled its efforts to organize for future disasters. Each district has a disaster preparedness team headed by a coordinator and there is a concerted effort to train and (re)certify people to respond to disasters. We are developing a network of supply drop-off locations for whenever there is a call for donations of material (our church is one of them). There are things each of us can do to help our neighbors: Give money. We are being asked to refrain from sending supplies to the relief efforts in the Bahamas right now; they simply are not prepared to receive large amounts of goods. Money is portable and flexible and can be converted to whatever is needed. If you wish to give to the Bahamas relief efforts, write “Bahamas” on your check. Get trained. The best way to be useful on the ground in times of disaster is to be trained ahead of time. We offer basic ERT (Emergency Response Team) training at many locations. Once you have received basic certification, you may pursue more training opportunities to include ladder safety, chainsaw operation, damage assessment, and others.

Be part of a team here. There are many different tasks we can accomplish without ever leaving town, sometimes without even leaving our houses. Making sandwiches for work crews, building clean-up kits, shopping for items, etc. If you can help in this way, please contact Larry Lewellen or Pastor Brian Be part of a team there. We are trying to get volunteers willing to travel to Panama City for short, three day trips. Since we are so close, we could come home each night and sleep in our own beds. Right now, the primary task is tarping. Some of the houses that were tarped a year ago must be re-tarped. No date is set yet, but if you are willing to serve in this way, please contacts Larry Lewellen or Pastor Brian. I am very proud of our ability to respond in these ways through our Methodist connection. Other churches have willing hearts and hands, but they lack the covenant relationship with churches all over the world that makes the United Methodist connection so capable. When we work together, even the smallest gestures of help and the tiniest trickle of money join together with many others to form a great torrent of blessings for those in need. God bless you all.

Boy Scout Troop 529 and Troop 5529 Shalimar UMC chartered troops 529 and 5529 have had a summer of big adventures culminating in a combined troop court of honor on August 26th. Over the summer scouts participated in many camps earning merit badges, bragging rights, and tall tales to share: Summer Camp at our local STSR camp with 18 scouters attending
from both troops Northern Tier High Adventure camp where 8 scouters hiked and
portaged canoes over 80 miles from Minnesota into Canada World Scout Jamboree where 8 scouters joined 45,000 scouts from
all over the world at Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia for 2 weeks of high adventure activities and international camaraderie Merit Badge University - 30 scouters participated in the largest
MBU ever held in the area with an attendance of 280 scouters Scouts earned almost 100 merit badges and 15 scouts advanced in rank. The scouts have a very busy and active calendar planned for fall and are looking forward to another smoked pork/rib fundraiser around Scout Sunday in February.
How We Are Hearing the “Cry of the Needy” On communion Sundays, we say a Prayer of Confession and Pardon and ask God to forgive us for having “failed to be an obedient church” and include the painful line, “we have not heard the cry of the needy.” Throughout the years, Shalimar UMC has carried out God’s command to do His will and love their neighbors. There is scarcely a non-profit organization around that could operate without the volunteers that come from this church family. SUMC has an ongoing history of events, groups, and individuals that live out “in joyful obedience” service to others. Faith Backpacks, Bus Ministry, REBOOT, Grief Share, Prayer ministry, Stephen Ministry are only just a few. Blessings for Children is an SUMC Missions ministry, and with your support is striving to hear “the cry of the needy” by serving children in need. Children ages newborn through 5th grade are served with clothing, personal care items, and school supplies. Each Wednesday from noon to 3:30 pm in the #10 2nd Street house behind the church, volunteers meet with these families and share God’s love and hope. They talk with them, hear their prayer concerns, meet their practical needs, offer Christian materials and invite them to participate in our church’s offerings. In short, we connect them with the love and hope of God. We are able to do this because our church hears “the cry of the needy.” Through this ministry, we have provided 160+ services to meet the needs of 90+ children (many repeat visitors) since we opened in January 2019. Please join us in helping to continue this ministry in any of the following ways:
Pray for this ministry and all who participate Volunteer once a month (no computers, just helping people!) 3rd Sunday of each month, donate any of the items we distribute. Diapers, wipes, socks, underwear, toothpaste, toilet paper are always needed and a complete list of items we distribute can be found on our webpage (below). Bins are located in the sanctuary narthex or the Family Life Center lobby. Donations can also be brought to the #10 2nd St. house on Wednesday afternoons between 11:30 - 3:30 pm Consider a financial contribution designated for Blessings for Children. SUMC will continue to hear “the cry of the needy” and we thank you for allowing Blessings for Children to be a part of meeting those needs. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: sumc.io/blessings
