Philip’s Focus Time Change is This Sunday This weekend is time change Sunday! Remember to move your clocks up one hour for worship in-person or on Livestream! In speaking of the time change, have you ever forgotten to change your clocks? I did one year. Let me set the stage. The year I forgot happened while I was pastoring the Lee Circuit (three churches) on the weekends near Auburn, Alabama. During the weekend, I pastored three churches that were on Central Standard Time. While each weekday, I attended Emory University in Atlanta, working on my master’s degree in Eastern Standard Time. As I lived in two different time zones, I did not always change my clocks. I simply remembered, am I on Eastern or Central Time? There were few benefits. My Mondays were only 23 hours, and my Fridays were 25 hours. What a sweet deal! Anyway, one year on time change Sunday, I remembered to go to church to preach one hour earlier for the time change! Everything worked smoothly, even living in two time zones on a time change Sunday. I relaxed. All had gone so smooth! What I did not expect was I would get confused on a busy afternoon. After ending my Sunday afternoon activities, I arrived home, glanced at my clock, and was startled! It was much later than I thought! I did not want to be late to preach at church that night! I jumped in the shower and got dressed in record time, and was quickly out the door! As I drove to the Hopewell United Methodist Church, I worried I was

cutting the time way too close. I would have to forego my muchneeded quiet time of preparation before the service. Yet, as the building came into sight, all appeared well! As I arrived at church, I was astoundingly the first and only one there! When I walked inside, I had so precious little time to prepare for the service. After my hurried preparations, five minutes had gone by, and no one was still there! Then ten minutes! I became anxious. Where was everybody?

Nervously, I looked at the clock on the wall and noticed the service time was only minutes away! This was so strange! A faithful congregation and not one person was there! A few more minutes passed, and just as I was beginning to think about all kinds of worries…IT HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS! I LOOKED CLOSER AT THE HOUR HAND AND THEN THOUGHT… TIME CHANGE! In my head, I had confused both the time change and living in two time zones. What had I done? I HAD ARRIVED ONE HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTES EARLY! After another half hour passed, all of our faithful worshippers began arriving, and all was well! This Sunday, we will likely have worshippers arrive at 8:45 AM, thinking they are early for the 8 AM service! They will be confused to hear me wrapping up my sermon! No worries! It happens! What is your favorite time change story? I would love to listen to it this Sunday! Well, remember to set your clocks forward one hour this Sunday! I look forward to sharing God with you, Who is the same yesterday, today, and forever! (Hebrews 13:8). We will be focusing again on a “timeless” message of simple discipleship. This week our focus will be on prayer! Hope to see you in person or on Livestream this Sunday! Shalom, Philip

The ladies of Splash of Joy II invite you to join us on April 7, 2021, as we spend time together studying God’s Word and enjoying fellowship with one another. We will be studying the life of “Elijah.” Priscilla Shirer will lead us on this seven-session journey. In this faith-building study, we will discover how Elijah’s obedience to God kept him anchored, sharpened his faith, broadened his impact, and invited heaven’s fire to fall. Elijah’s life reminds us that God is also working in our lives today to fashion a fiery, bold faith that will empower us to share the hope of Christ with our family, friends, co-workers, and community. We meet Wednesday morning from 9:30–11am. You are welcome to join us either in-person, in room 106, or via zoom. The cost of the study guide Is $17. Please contact Cathie Buckman at cathiebuckman@gmail.com or call 613-6414 to register or for more information.

The Easter Lily Project is a way to honor or remember someone and help others at the same time. All proceeds go to support the following missions. 1) Blessings for Children - In its third year of operation as a Shalimar United Methodist Church mission outreach ministry, Blessings for Children seeks to meet the needs of children in our community, ages infant through fifth grade. Our volunteers seek to share God’s love by providing new clothing, personal care items, and school supplies, along with Christian materials to encourage the entire family. 2) Bread House - In April 2020, Shalimar United Methodist Church established a ministry to provide food to the community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The food pantry evolved to become the Bread House which is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday to provide canned food, produce, milk, eggs, bread, and meat for our neighbors in need. Frozen meat and additional produce became menu options as a result of our collaboration with Destin Harvest. The Bread House seeks to provide for people experiencing food insecurity by allowing them to visit as needed. To date the Bread House has served over 40-tons of food to over 8000 individuals. 3) Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida - Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida strive to "enrich the lives of older adults and all those who serve them in faith-

based communities” located in both Northwest Florida and Alabama. 4) Safe Connections - The 1996 Shalimar United Methodist Church Missions Committee initiated Safe Connections (formerly called the Judge Ben Gordon Family Visitation Center) to meet a growing community needs for families in crisis. Safe Connections provides a nurturing environment and trained monitors to ensure safety for vulnerable children during supervised visitation time and monitored custody exchanges. Safe Connections also provides parenting classes, resources, and referrals to parents to help them become the safe and stable parents every child deserves. In the face of extraordinarily difficult circumstances presented during 2020, Safe Connections rose to the challenge and accomplished 3,972 individual services with thoughtfully updated safety and health protocols. We will honor your loved ones in the Beacon and on service slides April 4, 2021. You may donate any amount. Send an email to office@shalimar-umc.org, download a form from the website, or drop off a note at the office with the following information: • Your Name • Donation Amount • Message you would like to place in Beacon honoring or remembering a loved one Turn in by Mar 29, 2021

Week 47: This week we had 23 new families visit us, representing 99 new individuals touched by the Bread House. A military spouse and mother come to the Bread House for the first time. She was very excited about the services SUMC was providing to the community. After learning about the Bread House, she was told about Blessing for Children (BFC). She went over to BFC to learn more and she said she would share the information with other military families who are struggling. After receiving our Destin Harvest food drop items on Thursday, Pete and Terry went to their favorite eatery, Whataburger. While waiting in the drive-through line, the girl at the window asked them what they were doing. Pete and Terry said they had been unloading food at the SUMC Bread House. She got so excited. She took off her mask and said, “Do you remember me?” She was one of the first recipients of food when we gave food out from the back of an SUV at the Shalimar Ballfields! She mentioned how helpful that had been to her at the time because she was unable to work. We thanked her and invited her back to see us again! It’s great when you give folks a hand up and they show their appreciation.

Pic 1: Back when we first started giving food out of the back of SUVs.

Blessings for Children

How You Can Help Refer Families The question often comes up about how the families that visit Blessings for Children at the #10 2nd St. house hear about our ministry. We have placed flyers across our community at places that support families and women with children to include: churches, Fresh Start, Sharing and Caring, the WIC office at the Health Dept., Head Start, consignment shops for children’s clothes, Opportunity Place, local schools, and shelters and agencies. We try to ask the families that visit how they heard about Blessings for Children, and more and more, we hear “my neighbor,” “my sister,” or “my friend told me.” And just as we see so often, a personal invitation is the best way to share information! If you work with a family that you know who may be struggling, have a neighbor with needs, your child has a friend doing without, you serve with a young military father or mother who may need a helping hand, or you volunteer at another agency/school and become aware of families with children who are dealing with hardships, please give them a personal invitation to visit our outreach mission on Wednesdays from 123:30pm. If you want Blessings for Children flyers to distribute where you work or serve, please contact Mary Jane Robertson (contact info below). If you know a family but need to arrange for another time or way to help them, please reach out. We thank you for being the eyes of Jesus as we see needs that we can help meet. If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider:

• Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance.

• Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5, and 6 in

particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings -for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm

David Dale Hospitality Award Hospitality Ministry is one of the most important aspects of any church. Studies reveal that most visitors decide within the first ten minutes of their visit if they will return. The members of this ministry are the "first impression" of the church.

The David Dale Hospitality Award is named after David Dale. He was a 24/7 example of extravagant hospitality. David was friendly, went over and beyond to make others feel at home, and always had a smile and a servant's heart. In honor of his service, we award someone who represents his spirit every year. If you know someone who goes out of their way to be welcoming, please submit your nomination for the David Dale Hospitality Award. We will honor the 2021 winner on Sunday, June 6, 2021.

A Word From Our Librarian CHECK IT OUT Back in the church library today. I am anxious to explore this peaceful place. I am also in need of some "really good" reading. My attention is now drawn to the plethora of fiction offerings here. They seem to be arranged alphabetically by the author, and I find some of my favorites. I see Karen Kingsbury, Beverly Lewis, Ted Dekker, Colleen Coble, Gene Edwards, and many others. As promised, they are all arranged from A to Z! While I am deciding which one of Karen Kingsbury's novels to dive into, another patron joins me and seems eager to tell me even more about this special place. She, like me, has never actually "seen" the librarian but knows that there must actually "BE" one, as the decor here changes often, and the books on the long table are changed out a lot! My new library friend tells me she finds "books on the table" to often correspond to a recent sermon study or a season. To prove her point, we "check out" the table together, finding a tidy selection of books about the Easter season. Many of the books on the table are written by Max Lucado (I've recently discovered him in Bible Study). I eagerly select one of his! To my delight, an entire shelf nearby contains a wide selection of Lucado offerings, a great selection from Joyce Meyers, Charles Colson, David Jeremiah, and my all-time favorite, Billy Graham. I make a mental note to check out a book or two written by "the other Grahams" gathered there. Oh, the possibilities! And as Dr. Seuss so lovingly once said, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
