O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Save the Dates…A Month of Special Sundays In the coming four weeks, we will have special Sundays one after the other. As we move deeper into Lent, this means special worship is rising on the horizon. You will want to be present inperson or on Livestream this next month! What is just ahead? I am turning the preaching over to our younger pastors this week. This week (March 21), Matt will have the fifth in our series of disciple messages on SIMPLE at our 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 worship services. The focus will be on LOVE. At 11:07, David will preach, and I will preside over the receiving of the confirmation class. After a long Covid year, what a joy it will be to baptize and receive young people into the church. As we anticipate in the coming months, a post-Covid season, I am praying Sunday will be the beginning of many baptisms, reaffirmation of baptisms, and joining the church. Perhaps by the end of the year, the pastor's hands will remain wet from all the baptisms! I sure hope so! There is something very special coming for our children! Easter Fest is Saturday, March 27, before Palm Sunday. We look forward to the sights and sounds of children on the Church grounds for all the festivities. The good news is there is still time for you to volunteer to help make this a great day for children and our church family. You can find more details about Easter Fest in the Beacon. The following Sunday, March 28, will be Palm Sunday. Our Chancel Choir and Orchestra will present the musical "May We Never Lose the Wonder" at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00. Matt will preach on Exponential at our 11:07 worship. Palm Sunday will also usher in Holy Week. We will have both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday worship services at 7pm in the Family Life Center.

The following Sunday, April 4, will be Easter Sunday! It will be great to sing the Halleluiah Chorus at the conclusion of worship this year! The good news of the risen Christ will be presented with both eagerness and anticipation like never before! Remember last Easter? We did not have "in-person" last Easter! What a joy it will be to celebrate Easter both in-person and on Livestream! What about the Sunday after Easter, April 11? This year, we are coming through the longest, most grueling, and disruptive Covid-19 Year. As a result, you can expect the Sunday after Easter to be high on inspiration and hope! What will this year's "Unforgettable Message" after Easter look and feel like? The plans will be kept close to my vest, as I want to maintain an element of surprise. I will give you two clues. First, others will be involved in our worship and message! Finally, to provide you with a bonus clue, the message will be extremely relevant to today's issues and inspirational! As you can see, we have a month of special Sundays (March 21April 11)! I hope you will invite others to join us in-person and on Livestream. I look forward to sharing with you the "good news" of Jesus in the coming weeks! Shalimar United Methodist Church is a great church to be at! Save the dates! Better yet, invite someone to worship with you! Shalom, Philip

Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor

Condolences to Carol Johnson For the loss of her husband Chatt Johnson March 11, 2021

The ladies of Splash of Joy II invite you to join us on April 7, 2021, as we spend time together studying God’s Word and enjoying fellowship with one another. We will be studying the life of “Elijah.” Priscilla Shirer will lead us on this seven-session journey. In this faith-building study, we will discover how Elijah’s obedience to God kept him anchored, sharpened his faith, broadened his impact, and invited heaven’s fire to fall. Elijah’s life reminds us that God is also working in our lives today to fashion a fiery, bold faith that will empower us to share the hope of Christ with our family, friends, co-workers, and community. We meet Wednesday morning from 9:30–11am. You are welcome to join us either in-person, in room 106, or via zoom. The cost of the study guide Is $17. Please contact Cathie Buckman at cathiebuckman@gmail.com or call 613-6414 to register or for more information.

The Wednesday morning Splash I group invites YOU to join us for a fresh new study of JUDE beginning April 14th. Have you ever studied that small, obscure book? I surely have not, so let’s get together to find what jewels we can find in this 1-chapter study for seven weeks. YES, seven weeks for one chapter. This study is by Jackie Hill Perry, and she encourages us to do what God has commanded His beloved church to do---the necessary work of contending for the faith in a world of unbelief. We will study themes of being called, loved, and kept and learn how to point others to Jesus in grace and truth. We serve others well when we share the whole gospel with them, not just the parts deemed attractive by our culture. We meet Wednesday mornings, 9:30-11:30 am, currently in the sanctuary. If you have questions, you can call Sara Michaelson at 865-3343. This study is also available on zoom Meeting ID: 898 749 041.

Blessings for Children

How You Can Help Refer Families The question often comes up about how the families that visit Blessings for Children at the #10 2nd St. house hear about our ministry. We have placed flyers across our community at places that support families and women with children to include: churches, Fresh Start, Sharing and Caring, the WIC office at the Health Dept., Head Start, consignment shops for children’s clothes, Opportunity Place, local schools, and shelters and agencies. We try to ask the families that visit how they heard about Blessings for Children, and more and more, we hear “my neighbor,” “my sister,” or “my friend told me.” And just as we see so often, a personal invitation is the best way to share information! If you work with a family that you know who may be struggling, have a neighbor with needs, your child has a friend doing without, you serve with a young military father or mother who may need a helping hand, or you volunteer at another agency/school and become aware of families with children who are dealing with hardships, please give them a personal invitation to visit our outreach mission on Wednesdays from 123:30pm. If you want Blessings for Children flyers to distribute where you work or serve, please contact Mary Jane Robertson (contact info below). If you know a family but need to arrange for another time or way to help them, please reach out. We thank you for being the eyes of Jesus as we see needs that we can help meet. If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider:

• Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance.

• Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings -for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm

The Easter Lily Project is a way to honor or remember someone and help others at the same time. All proceeds go to support the following missions. 1) Blessings for Children - In its third year of operation as a Shalimar United Methodist Church mission outreach ministry, Blessings for Children seeks to meet the needs of children in our community, ages infant through fifth grade. Our volunteers seek to share God’s love by providing new clothing, personal care items, and school supplies, along with Christian materials to encourage the entire family. 2) Bread House - In April 2020, Shalimar United Methodist Church established a ministry to provide food to the community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The food pantry evolved to become the Bread House which is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday to provide canned food, produce, milk, eggs, bread, and meat for our neighbors in need. Frozen meat and additional produce became menu options as a result of our collaboration with Destin Harvest. The Bread House seeks to provide for people experiencing food insecurity by allowing them to visit as needed. To date the Bread House has served over 40-tons of food to over 8000 individuals. 3) Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida - Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida strive to "enrich the lives of older adults and all those who serve them in faith-

based communities” located in both Northwest Florida and Alabama. 4) Safe Connections - The 1996 Shalimar United Methodist Church Missions Committee initiated Safe Connections (formerly called the Judge Ben Gordon Family Visitation Center) to meet a growing community needs for families in crisis. Safe Connections provides a nurturing environment and trained monitors to ensure safety for vulnerable children during supervised visitation time and monitored custody exchanges. Safe Connections also provides parenting classes, resources, and referrals to parents to help them become the safe and stable parents every child deserves. In the face of extraordinarily difficult circumstances presented during 2020, Safe Connections rose to the challenge and accomplished 3,972 individual services with thoughtfully updated safety and health protocols. We will honor your loved ones in the Beacon and on service slides April 4, 2021. You may donate any amount. Send an email to office@shalimar-umc.org, download a form from the website, or drop off a note at the office with the following information: • Your Name • Donation Amount • Message you would like to place in Beacon honoring or remembering a loved one Turn in by Mar 29, 2021

Week 48: Another great week at the Bread House! We had our 10,000th recipient receive food from the Bread House! Congratulations, SUMC, on a job well done! It is through the countless hours of volunteers at the Bread House and donations from the congregation that makes the Bread House a beacon of hope for those in need!

Pic 1: Ladies of the Bread House! Left to right: Janet, Robin, Sandra, Tammy, Vi, and Judy! Stop by and say Hi sometime. They would love to chat with you!

We had an interesting story last week. A young man pulled up in his car as we were walking to our cars after closing. He asked if he could get some food, we told him sure, but we usually close at noon. We asked how many are in his family, and he said 5 to 10. So, I asked him, which was it, 5 or 10? He said he did not know for sure because he had relatives coming in for a funeral. You can imagine I felt like a heel, so I said not to worry, we will make up a box of food for him. After putting a box together and taking it to his car, I asked who had passed. He stated it was his dad. You could tell he was having a hard time. Wow, you never know what problems and burdens our visitors bring with them. Sometimes it makes us realize how blessed we are!

David Dale Hospitality Award Hospitality Ministry is one of the most important aspects of any church. Studies reveal that most visitors decide within the first ten minutes of their visit if they will return. The members of this ministry are the "first impression" of the church.

The David Dale Hospitality Award is named after David Dale. He was a 24/7 example of extravagant hospitality. David was friendly, went over and beyond to make others feel at home, and always had a smile and a servant's heart. In honor of his service, we award someone who represents his spirit every year. If you know someone who goes out of their way to be welcoming, please submit your nomination for the David Dale Hospitality Award. We will honor the 2021 winner on Sunday, June 6, 2021.
