Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Philip’s Focus Updated Shalimar UMC Covid Protocol for Holy Week As of Palm Sunday, March 28th, we will slightly revise our Covid19 Protocol. As the positive trends show an upward number of vaccinations and a lower number of Covid cases in Okaloosa County, we believe it is time to acknowledge these trends. The change will be on the protocol about masks. Our protocol will change from “mask required” inside buildings to “mask recommended.” If conditions warrant, we will consider additional changes as needed. This change comes as a result of recognizing our congregation is currently at a lower level of risk. We are seeing a substantial swing in the number of persons in our congregation who have been vaccinated. It is especially true of persons over the age of 65. In addition to having large numbers of all ages, Shalimar UMC has a very large constituency of persons over 65. We may have the largest number in this age group of any church or organization in Okaloosa County. Vaccinations for this age group have been available for months now. Please keep in mind moving from “mask required” to “mask recommended” does not change the other SUMC Covid protocols at this time. “Mask recommended” means maskwearing will be encouraged, and masks remain available for use for our indoor events. We will continue to promote social distancing, frequent handwashing, and the use of hand sanitizer. We continue to benefit from using a topical CDC (Center for Disease Control) approved germicide to kill Covid. Our church will continue to make your safety a number one priority. Let me share two very positive notes. First, we learned on Wednesday that our air purifiers installed throughout our campus have been tested and do kill Covid-19. These air purifiers also kill many other germs. In short, our campus setting now has more built-in practices and preventatives from contagious disease than one year ago. Second, our Livestream and online

church have dramatically grown in this year of Covid. We expect our robust online presence and social media to remain with us in the post-Covid church. The change of our mask protocol does have other considerations which are beyond our control. As we continue to encourage social distancing, higher attendance events will present challenges. Through-out this pandemic, we have not and will not turn people away who want to worship. This has been very positive even in such a year! As I write this article, I know this revision will make some persons ecstatic and others anxious. Please know we have agonized over every decision made this year. This one is no different. As your pastor, I ask for your cooperation and respect for all persons in our church and community. In this time, let us love everyone, especially those who may see life differently from us. I am grateful to our Covid-19 Task Force, Lead Team, and Staff for phenomenal leadership this past year. Overall, I am very proud of how our church has responded to the Covid-19 Pandemic. In the coming months and years, we will continue to benefit from the lessons learned! We are still learning as well! Let me end with something I think we can all agree on! There has never been a time when people need God and the Church more! This is why we have focused on discipleship with SIMPLE during Lent! Let us seek to follow, learn from, and imitate Jesus into Holy Week! This upcoming week could be a most remarkable time for all of us! Have a blessed and inspirational Holy Week and Easter! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org

The Wednesday morning Splash I group invites YOU to join us for a fresh new study of JUDE beginning April 14th. Have you ever studied that small, obscure book? I surely have not, so let’s get together to find what jewels we can find in this 1-chapter study for seven weeks. YES, seven weeks for one chapter.

This study is by Jackie Hill Perry, and she encourages us to do what God has commanded His beloved church to do---the necessary work of contending for the faith in a world of unbelief. We will study themes of being called, loved, and kept and learn how to point others to Jesus in grace and truth. We serve others well when we share the whole gospel with them, not just the parts deemed attractive by our culture. We meet Wednesday mornings, 9:30-11:30 am, currently in the sanctuary. If you have questions, you can call Sara Michaelson at 865-3343. This study is also available on zoom Meeting ID: 898 749 041.

The ladies of Splash of Joy II invite you to join us on April 7, 2021, as we spend time together studying God’s Word and enjoying fellowship with one another. We will be studying the life of “Elijah.” Priscilla Shirer will lead us on this seven-session journey. In this faith-building study, we will discover how Elijah’s obedience to God kept him anchored, sharpened his faith, broadened his impact, and invited heaven’s fire to fall. Elijah’s life reminds us that God is also working in our lives today to fashion a fiery, bold faith that will empower us to share the hope of Christ with our family, friends, co-workers, and community. We meet Wednesday morning from 9:30–11am. You are welcome to join us either in-person, in room 106, or via zoom. The cost of the study guide Is $17. Please contact Cathie Buckman at cathiebuckman@gmail.com or call 613-6414 to register or for more information.

The Easter Lily Project is a way to honor or remember someone and help others at the same time. All proceeds go to support the following missions.

1) Blessings for Children - In its third year of operation as a Shalimar United Methodist Church mission outreach ministry, Blessings for Children seeks to meet the needs of children in our community, ages infant through fifth grade. Our volunteers seek to share God’s love by providing new clothing, personal care items, and school supplies, along with Christian materials to encourage the entire family. 2) Bread House - In April 2020, Shalimar United Methodist Church established a ministry to provide food to the community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The food pantry evolved to become the Bread House which is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday to provide canned food, produce, milk, eggs, bread, and meat for our neighbors in need. Frozen meat and additional produce became menu options as a result of our collaboration with Destin Harvest. The Bread House seeks to provide for people experiencing food insecurity by allowing them to visit as needed. To date the Bread House has served over 40-tons of food to over 8000 individuals. 3) Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida - Methodist Homes of Alabama and Northwest Florida strive to "enrich the lives of older adults and all those who serve them in faith-

based communities” located in both Northwest Florida and Alabama. 4) Safe Connections - The 1996 Shalimar United Methodist Church Missions Committee initiated Safe Connections (formerly called the Judge Ben Gordon Family Visitation Center) to meet a growing community needs for families in crisis. Safe Connections provides a nurturing environment and trained monitors to ensure safety for vulnerable children during supervised visitation time and monitored custody exchanges. Safe Connections also provides parenting classes, resources, and referrals to parents to help them become the safe and stable parents every child deserves. In the face of extraordinarily difficult circumstances presented during 2020, Safe Connections rose to the challenge and accomplished 3,972 individual services with thoughtfully updated safety and health protocols. We will honor your loved ones in the Beacon and on service slides April 4, 2021. You may donate any amount. Send an email to office@shalimar-umc.org, download a form from the website, or drop off a note at the office with the following information: • Your Name • Donation Amount • Message you would like to place in Beacon honoring or remembering a loved one Turn in by Mar 29, 2021

Week 49: Early Monday morning, we had three individuals arrive

at the Bread House around 8:45. We open at nine. They were hoping to get some food and get back home before going to work. Of course, we helped them out, and they took off on their bikes to get the food put away before going to work. When you work at the Bread House, you really get a chance to see how some people are still struggling. Not only that, you get to know these folks and see them around town, and they are always glad to smile at you and thank you for helping them.

Picture: Another busy day at the Bread House!

Another story we had is about a young lady who came to the Bread House with a name tag. Sandra asked her if she was on her way to work, and she said no, she was on her way to a bible study here at SUMC. She was part of the Women’s Bible study. How awesome is it that! SUMC can help fill these individuals spiritually as well as filling them with food! If you have not stopped by the Bread House, please come by any Mon, Wed, or Fri between 9-12. We would love to show you around! Week 49 Numbers Bags Collected - 283 Bags Given Out - 200 Gift cards Given Out - 0 Members Served - 233

David Dale Hospitality Award Hospitality Ministry is one of the most important aspects of any church. Studies reveal that most visitors decide within the first ten minutes of their visit if they will return. The members of this ministry are the "first impression" of the church. The David Dale Hospitality Award is named after David Dale. He was a 24/7 example of extravagant hospitality. David was friendly, went over and beyond to make others feel at home, and always had a smile and a servant's heart. In honor of his service, we award someone who represents his spirit every year. If you know someone who goes out of their way to be welcoming, please submit your nomination for the David Dale Hospitality Award. We will honor the 2021 winner on Sunday, June 6, 2021.

Blessings for Children How You Can Help Refer Families The question often comes up about how the families that visit Blessings for Children at the #10 2nd St. house hear about our ministry. We have placed flyers across our community at places that support families and women with children to include: churches, Fresh Start, Sharing and Caring, the WIC office at the Health Dept., Head Start, consignment shops for children’s clothes, Opportunity Place, local schools, and shelters and agencies. We try to ask the families that visit how they heard about Blessings for Children, and more and more, we hear “my neighbor,” “my sister,” or “my friend told me.” And just as we see so often, a personal invitation is the best way to share information! If you work with a family that you know who may be struggling, have a neighbor with needs, your child has a friend doing without, you serve with a young military father or mother who may need a helping hand, or you volunteer at another agency/school and become aware of families with children who are dealing with hardships, please give them a personal invitation to visit our outreach mission on Wednesdays from 123:30pm. If you want Blessings for Children flyers to distribute where you work or serve, please contact Mary Jane Robertson (contact info below). If you know a family but need to arrange for another time or way to help them, please reach out. We thank you for being the eyes of Jesus as we see needs that we can help meet. If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider:

• Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance.

• Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5, and 6 in

particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings -for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm

Prayer Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place. Prayer Chain You can add someone to the Prayer Chain, share an answered prayer or receive prayer requests and praises through email. We are excited to announce the prayer list can now be accessed on the website or app. Please call the office for the password to this page.
