Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. Philip’s Focus The “SHIPS” of the Church A few weeks ago, I learned from our Mayor, Mark Franks, the name Shalimar means “By the beautiful water.” That means our church name could mean “Church by the beautiful water.” Some of the sights and sounds on the beautiful water are the presence of boats and ships. When I think of SHIPS, I feel how appropriate it is for the Church. After all, there are many SHIPS of the Church! There is FELLOW-SHIP! Our being together means more now than it ever did following our year of the pandemic. There is something very special about being together as a church family. You will want to know we are planning a church-wide “Dinner on the Grounds” on May 23rd. The event to WELCOME EVERYONE BACK will be catered, free, and open to all who want to come! There is DISCIPLE-SHIP! A disciple follows, learns, and imitates becoming more like Jesus. Making disciples is at the heart of the mission we exist as a church. Jesus challenges us to go into the world and make disciples of all nations. This SHIP of the Church is our mission. There is STEWARD-SHIP! Everyone is invited to offer the Lord their tithe, gifts, and service for growing the Kingdom! We all participate in the greater mission of the Church through our stewardship!
There are RELATION-SHIPS! The Church is a people in which we make friends and form relationships. Some of us even met our spouses at Church! We also make life-long friends! The Church provides the opportunity to form relationships! There is LEADER-SHIP! Every Church is served well by leaders who lead the congregation to follow God’s direction. We are blessed at Shalimar with leaders! A church can make the most of its opportunities through growing disciples and raising leaders!
Dr. George Morris shared in my evangelism class that the Church is many ships and not just one large vessel. That would make the Church more of an armada of ships instead of just one boat. At Shalimar UMC, we are many SHIPS, and we need to all paddle in the same direction. That leads to the most important SHIP of the Church. The LORDSHIP of Jesus! We seek to do everything under the LORD-SHIP of JESUS! We strive to all paddle in the same direction! We are on the GO to follow Jesus! Please have your paddle with you Sunday as we hear another message on GO! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org

Week 54: The Bread House had a steady stream of folks this week. We see our numbers drop somewhat with the stimulus checks out, but they are starting to pick back up. We continue to see new families come to the Bread House every week. This week we had seven new families representing 21 individuals who benefited from this outreach program!
Meet Lebaron; he is our weekly driver who delivers all kinds of goodies courtesy of Destin Harvest. They go to local stores and glean what is not needed and deliver them to food pantries in the local area. In one year, the Bread House has become the largest food pantry in the area, exceeding all expectations. Due to the
large demand and the generous donations from our congregation and community, it allows this to happen! The Bread House has become a community support activity. All are welcome to come! Folks from Shalimar and Ft. Walton bring donations to help those in need. If you have not stopped by the Bread House, please come by any Mon, Wed, or Fri between 9-12. NUMBERS and NAMES We all need and have to do it – we let "numbers" enter into our lives. Businesses, schools, churches, and our own families have to operate and survive knowing the "numbers." It is how we pay the bills, know what supply and staff are needed to provide services in our society, how we determine who wins an athletic event, and how we know who is the "best" at something. We also often ask "how many" as we do here at the church. How many were in our Bible Studies? How many served or were served in one of our many ministries? How many were in church or online at Sunday worship, or how many were at Wednesday Night Supper (how long ago those seem!)? It is one measure of what is happening at a church.
All of us striving to be the "church" know we have to go beyond "numbers." We need to get into relationships with those God has sent us to and them to us. Scripture tells us God knows our name (Isaiah 43:1). So, while we make use of those needed "numbers," may we never stop at just the "number." May we continue to know, in all the ways we are able, those we serve and worship with. Thank you for joining with us at Blessings for Children and all the other ministries and opportunities where we share Christ; together, we worship alongside and serve not just faceless numbers but know those numbers represent Maria, Jessi, Michael, Anna, Brantley, Pablo, Natalie, Aaron, Bristol, and the countless names we all can add. Praise God we are not only a number but known! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the
lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size
4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children
sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-forchildren. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed! • A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the
church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.
