Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. All services can be found online at Shalimar-umc.org.
O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.
Here's what you need to know this week.

Philip’s Focus Around Shalimar, Things to Know, and Having Some Fun This week I have chosen to write some short snippets of what is going on around Shalimar UMC. In this article/blog, I will list some things you may or may not know. If you know the answers to all the questions, I will have a prize for you! I also have an informal poll at the end on which Associate Pastor looks the youngest. •
Deb Steele is retiring soon. Her last day will be May 21, 2021. I invite our congregation to show appreciation for Deb’s dedicated work for Shalimar UMC. Please make out checks to Shalimar UMC and on the memo note “Deb Steele Appreciation.” On many Sunday mornings, Deb is the first to greet me around 6am. She has been amazingly productive and will be difficult to replace. Thank you, Deb! I will say more in a future Beacon. Do you know how many years Deb has been with us?
•
Many of you may not know, but history will be made next month. Shalimar UMC will turn 70 years old. Do you know the actual date of the first service? Where was the first service held?
•
We are blessed and grateful for great leadership from our Finance Committee and Finance Staff Members. Did you know that our Finance Ministry committee and staff have reduced our overall church indebtedness by 29% during a world pandemic? Our Haverty’s property debt, since January of 2020, has been reduced from $1,163,197 to $893,686? We are grateful the church has been able to make additional principal payments over the last six months. Also, under the finance committee leadership, a pay-back plan for the internal church loan for the purchase of Cross Corner has been implemented. The internal loan began at $372,000 and is now $191,551. We now project in three or four years, Shalimar UMC could be debt-free. Who knows, maybe sooner! Do you remember the original purchase price for Cross Corner?
•
JUST FOR FUN: three current pastors came to Shalimar UMC for their first full-time ministry position after seminary. (Note: Rev. Faith Parry was in her second appointment when coming to Shalimar, and Dr. Brad Bradford had served numerous appointments before Shalimar.) Of these three, which one came to Shalimar UMC the youngest? Which one looks the youngest? Who has the most hair? The most handsome?
Remember you have to have the right answers to get the prize!
Thanks for being a church that is making a difference for Jesus! How exciting it is to see faces we have not seen in a year each Sunday! Look forward to sharing with you another GO message this week! Shalom, Philip

Week 55: It was an interesting week. We had a man who came in to receive food tell us he was moving and how this food pantry has helped him so much while he was down and out. He then proceeded to give us $20.00 to help the cause. Events like this have happened several times while we have been open. This week we also had a lady come by and pick up some items. Then she showed us she had made spring rolls for the homeless. She takes hundreds every Monday to help them out. She gave the Bread House enough for every staff to have one, and they were fantastic. Everyone is out trying to help their neighbors. It is a great feeling! Week 55 Numbers Bags Collected - 350 Bags Given Out - 287 Gift cards Given - 2 Members Served - 129

NUMBERS and NAMES We all need and have to do it – we let "numbers" enter into our lives. Businesses, schools, churches, and our own families have to operate and survive knowing the "numbers." It is how we pay the bills, know what supply and staff are needed to provide services in our society, how we determine who wins an athletic event, and how we know who is the "best" at something. We also often ask "how many" as we do here at the church. How many were in our Bible Studies? How many served or were served in one of our many ministries? How many were in church or online at Sunday worship, or how many were at Wednesday Night Supper (how long ago those seem!)? It is one measure of what is happening at a church.
All of us striving to be the "church" know we have to go beyond "numbers." We need to get into relationships with those God has sent us to and them to us. Scripture tells us God knows our name (Isaiah 43:1). So, while we make use of those needed "numbers," may we never stop at just the "number." May we continue to know, in all the ways we are able, those we serve and worship with. Thank you for joining with us at Blessings for Children and all the other ministries and opportunities where we share Christ; together, we worship alongside and serve not just faceless numbers but know those numbers represent Maria, Jessi, Michael, Anna, Brantley, Pablo, Natalie, Aaron, Bristol, and the countless names we all can add. Praise God we are not only a number but known! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the
lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size
4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children
sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-forchildren. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed! • A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the
church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.
