Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. Philip’s Focus Dr. Brad Bradford will take Study Leave for Six Weeks Over the next six weeks, Dr. Brad Bradford will be on study leave from July 5-August 11. He is entitled to this leave and has been planning a productive project for many months. Brad has received all the needed church approval. The specific purpose of this time is for renewal and to focus on a project of study. This study leave is new to our church. Let me share a little more background so that you will have more information. The United Methodist Book of Discipline encourages and permits pastors to renew themselves when they have been in the same appointment for six years. Brad has been at Shalimar for nine years and in ministry full-time for thirty-nine years. At this point, Brad plans to continue in ministry for many more years. Taking a study leave gives him a chance to renew and recharge for the continued marathon of ministry ahead. Brad takes this leave with all the proper approval of the church in hand. He followed the Book of Discipline and received the approval of the District Superintendent, the Staff Parish Committee, and the Church Council. In addition, he has prepared to make sure all of his duties are covered through
volunteers and staff. Brad has been very thorough and has written plans anticipating the church's needs over the next six weeks. We, as a staff, are also ready to step up and in with anything that needs our attention. This leave will offer Brad a chance to change his weekly rhythms. Dr. Bradford has outlined a project to complete in his time away. His main focus will be on posttraumatic issues brought on by Covid-19. He plans to explore posttraumatic growth with an eye toward psychological development and how it relates to discipleship. He will draw from Christian psychologists, leaders in disciple development, contextual intelligence, and most of all, the Bible. When Brad returns in mid-August, he plans to share his findings through studies he will offer at Shalimar UMC. He will be sharing more of these plans when he returns. As we continue to move out of the "crazy" Covid-19 year, we might all benefit from Brad's research and his reflections as a pastor. Brad is doing a great job at Shalimar! Last Sunday, leading our patriotic services, was the most recent example of his excellent leadership for our congregation. Would you please join me in praying that this study leave will be a most beneficial time for him? It could really be a spiritual boost for his future years and Shalimar UMC! Brad taking this time to renew as a longtime pastor is a very good thing! Shalom, Philip

John Wesley the founder of the Methodist movement had 3 general rules that he hoped everyone who called themselves Methodist would strive to achieve. Join us for 7 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm, as we look at each of these rules and how we can apply these great teachings to our daily lives! It is a great way to learn more about our Wesleyan heritage as well as some practical ways we strive to be more like Christ in the world today! Led by Rev. Matt Langford in room 207.
SPLASH OF JOY I STUDY WILL BEGIN AUGUST 18TH
We are so excited to get back to study after a summer break. All of you ladies are invited to come to study the book of Haggai (which is only 38 verses long). This Old Testament study, TAKE COURAGE, by Jennifer Rothschild, will show us how the prophet Haggai reminded the Jewish people that they could take courage and work because God was with them. We will learn together how to walk confidently in our callings, stay motivated when obstacles make us want to quit, and defeat discouragement through God's presence. We meet from 9:30-11:00, and the location on our campus will be announced later. We will provide childcare with reservation only!! Books will be available for purchase on the first day of this 7-week study. Questions may be referred to Sara Michaelson 850-865-3343. Also, Melanie Bandy will be leading a Zoom class from the same book and same dates. If you are interested in doing the study by zoom, please contact Melanie, melaniejbandy@gmail.com, and order your book if you are not able to pick it up at the church.
Our SUMC Missions team will host a community outreach "Back to School" event on Sun, Aug 1st, from 3-4:30pm outside in our FLC parking lots. While supplies last, backpacks and school supplies will be distributed in a "drive by fashion" to in-need elementary, middle, and high school students from our community. In addition, we will have an ice cream truck and other welcoming activities offered by several SUMC ministries for those attending, including our pastors sharing prayers with the families, and our church’s library providing children and youth books and Bibles to be taken home. Please share this information with any families you know who would benefit from extra help in preparing for the upcoming school year. If you want to help with this needed and special mission project to share God's blessings with others, please contact Mary Jane Robertson, (850) 499-6173 or mjr53@cox.net. There's a place for you! And another way to help is by donating any children/youth books or Bibles that are gently used or new. Please drop off books in the donation box just inside the back door of our church library.
We will never run out of this…….Ephesians 6:18 After we close Blessings for Children each Wednesday, we inventory what has gone out and what needs to be restocked to be ready for the children Jesus will send us the next week. It's with a prayer, held breath, and your generous support that we prepare for what we will need each week. There is always a chance we did not stock enough #6 diapers, or medium boy’s t-shirts, or 18-month-old onesies, or any of the items we share. However, we offer something at BFC each week that we know we will never run out of, the listening ear of our Heavenly Father and the praying warriors of our church. Ephesians 6:18 tells us to "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." As we meet with each family, we always ask for their prayer requests. Even if we do not understand each other's languages, we can understand a request for prayer for someone's "familia/family." Our church's prayer team receives each request and has prayed for surgeries, finances, traveling mercies, pregnancies, jobs, health, restoration, grief, peace, food, safety. All requests we have made ourselves. So, while we may, on occasion, run out of a needed item, we will never run out of being able to share in praying for our families. Thanks to a Heavenly Father who always hears, a praying church family, and our SUMC prayer ministry team! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the
lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size
4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes,
toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-forchildren. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. •
Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the
church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm
