O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. Philip’s Focus Hopes for the Next Six Months (Part Two-Mid Year Report) We are now at the beginning of the second half of 2021. Last week, I reflected on the first six months of the year. This week, I will shift toward hopes for the second half of the year. Before Labor Day, I hope to sit down and visit with every Sunday School leader, teacher, Emmaus reunion group leader, study leader, mission leader, and ministry team leader to chart a coordinated course for 2022 disciple-making here at Shalimar United Methodist Church. If you read this and have an interest, I would also like to visit with you. I wish to reach out to all existing groups and coordinate our efforts for a common church synergy. A phrase I will use beginning this Sunday is "putting all our oars in the water together." I hope we will have all our oars in the water rowing in the same direction in a few months! Synergy! Better yet, empowered by the Holy Spirit! That is my hope!
Also, in August, I will begin rolling out layers of the plan "1,000 growing in their discipleship each week" through Shalimar United Methodist Church. Anyone interested can attend a free dinner on August 23rd at 6pm. In addition to a free dinner, the event will include inspiration, witness, and rolling out plans for 2022 for disciple multiplication. I am writing this plan and organizing it with consultation from another coach and passionate persons about discipleship in our congregation. It will be a specific plan that will be original with Shalimar. I ask for your prayers as these plans begin to be rolled out. We truly need everyone's participation in accomplishing the church's mission of "making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." We will seek to rachet up our reaching, teaching, and sending for a great Kingdom impact! Most of all, we need to submit to God and seek the power of His Holy Spirit for this plan to be truly exponential! In the next six months, we will increase opportunities for baptisms, reaffirmations of baptisms, professions of faith, and receiving new members. Our beach baptisms will resume in August with two dates. We will gather at Garniers Beach Park (new
location) on Saturday, August 7th at 10am and Sunday, August 22nd at 4pm. There is nothing more important in church life than professions of faith, baptisms, and reaffirmations of faith. If you desire baptism, please let us know so that we can make plans for your baptism. Also, if you want to join Shalimar UMC, we welcome the opportunity to plan to receive you into membership for an upcoming Sunday. You may not know, but there are hopes that a new respite ministry will be birthed soon! This respite ministry follows the same model of the successful ministry founded at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery. Led by Don Litke, our team is actively planning and hoping this vision will become a reality. Plans for this ministry will take place in Cross Corner. Would you please keep the team and respite plans in your prayers?
Speaking of Cross Corner, we anticipate continued renovation and expanded use of Cross Corner in the second half of the year. The facilities are receiving a makeover, and it is exciting to see the transformation of old rooms becoming new. Again, we appreciate all who have donated gifts and volunteered their time to make this facility a wonderful addition to our campus. The Cross Corner facility will be such an addition to Shalimar UMC as progress continues of renovation in the coming years. These are some of my thoughts regarding "hopes for the next six months." But, of course, we know God always brings surprising blessings along the way! So, again, I think of the words of wisdom from the book of Proverbs, "In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps" (Proverbs 16:9). So, let us put our oars in the water and seek together all the opportunities God will bring in the next six months! Shalom, Philip If you missed part one from last week, click here to read it.
Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor
Who are Stephen Ministers? Stephen Ministers are lay members of the church who are servants, listeners, supportive resource people, and caring Christian friends. They are not counselors, therapists, pastors, or mental health professionals. They listen, explore feelings, encourage, pray, share Christ’s love, and give comfort in a confidential manner. Stephen Ministers serve as an extension of the pastoral staff.
What is Stephen Ministry? Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one lay caring ministry that helps people get through a difficult period in their life such as family death, divorce, disability, job loss or illness. It provides high quality, confidential, Christ-centered care. John Wesley the founder of the Methodist movement had 3 general rules that he hoped everyone who called themselves Methodist would strive to achieve. Join us for 7 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm, as we look at each of these rules and how we can apply these great teachings to our daily lives! It is a great way to learn more about our Wesleyan heritage as well as some practical ways we strive to be more like Christ in the world today! Led by Rev. Matt Langford in room 207.
A gentle reminder from the library There is still time to donate your gently used children's books to the library!! A donation box awaits your donations just inside the library back door and will be offered to our back-to-school bash guests on Aug 1st. Accept this as an "early thank you note," as those books might make a huge difference in small hands. P.S. books for kids of all ages, thru middle school, are welcome! And thanks again!!!
Men's Barn Meeting - August 12th 7:00-8:30ish - Molino, FL. The bus heads to the "barn" (literally) at 4:30pm on the second Thursday of each month from the church. Don't worry about having to drive the distance! We will get you there in time for a hearty steak dinner (FREE of charge), and you can sleep on the way back!
Just to make the evening even better, great music is provided by the "Barn Band" both while you are enjoying your meal and afterward! Each month there is a different guest speaker, and some very powerful testimonies are shared. This time you will hear from the powerful orator, Evangelist Neal Hatfield, who carries a special burden for young people. When he is not traveling to hold revivals, crusades, or special events, he and his wife, Sue, co-direct the expansion and operations of Uplands Reach Conference Center, which they founded in 1988. The Hatfield’s are graduates of Heritage College in Orlando, FL. Please join the men of the church (sorry, ladies, men only) for a great night of worship and fellowship! For questions, contact John Patterson @ 850-737-1007. More info is also available at www.mensbarnmeeting.com.
SPLASH OF JOY I STUDY WILL BEGIN AUGUST 18TH
We are so excited to get back to study after a summer break. All of you ladies are invited to come to study the book of Haggai (which is only 38 verses long). This Old Testament study, TAKE COURAGE, by Jennifer Rothschild, will show us how the prophet Haggai reminded the Jewish people that they could take courage and work because God was with them. We will learn together how to walk confidently in our callings, stay motivated when obstacles make us want to quit, and defeat discouragement through God's presence. We meet from 9:30-11:00, and the location on our campus will be announced later. We will provide childcare with reservation only!! Books will be available for purchase on the first day of this 7-week study. Questions may be referred to Sara Michaelson 850-865-3343. Also, Melanie Bandy will be leading a Zoom class from the same book and same dates. If you are interested in doing the study by zoom, please contact Melanie, melaniejbandy@gmail.com, and order your book if you are not able to pick it up at the church.
Jude, Contending for the Faith in Today’s Culture Jackie Hill Perry Have you ever wondered just how much God can pack into one small book of the Bible? Well, join us as we explore the book of Jude, a one-chapter book with only 25 verses. There is a lot that God wants to reveal to us about contending for faith in a world of unbelief while protecting us from falling into the same deceptions that have negatively affected both the church and our culture. In this 7-session study, Jackie Hill Perry will help us learn to recognize God’s Word as an anchor in the ever-shifting cultural climate, to discover your God-given identity in a world of deception, and to see how this small, obscure book in Scripture still speaks to the church today. SPLASH OF JOY II will begin this study on August 25, 2021. We meet every Wednesday from 9:30 – 11:30, participating in both small and large group settings. Location will be announced at a later date. WE invite you to join us as we study God’s Word and enjoy Christian fellowship with other women of faith. To register or for more information, please contact Cathie Buckman at 850-797-6936 or email at cathiebuckman@gmail.com.
Our SUMC Missions team will host a community outreach "Back to School" event on Sun, Aug 1st, from 3-4:30pm outside in our FLC parking lots. While supplies last, backpacks and school supplies will be distributed in a "drive by fashion" to in-need elementary, middle, and high school students from our community. In addition, we will have an ice cream truck and other welcoming activities offered by several SUMC ministries for those attending, including our pastors sharing prayers with the families, and our church’s library providing children and youth books and Bibles to be taken home. Please share this information with any families you know who would benefit from extra help in preparing for the upcoming school year. If you want to help with this needed and special mission project to share God's blessings with others, please contact Mary Jane Robertson, (850) 499-6173 or mjr53@cox.net. There's a place for you! And another way to help is by donating any children/youth books or Bibles that are gently used or new. Please drop off books in the donation box just inside the back door of our church library.
Week 65
The Bread House would like to spotlight a new volunteer who has made many contributions. 9-year-old Charlie Harrison attended Vacation Bible School at Shalimar United Methodist Church. Children who attended VBS toured The Bread House after hours to learn what the program did for our community. Once VBS was over, Charlie asked if he could help at The Bread House. So Charlie and his mom, Katie Williams, began volunteering. Charlie has been a great team member doing an assortment of tasks, and with each new responsibility, he has done so with great care and attention to detail. Charlie will be returning to school soon at Shalimar Elementary School. Hopefully, we can convince Charlie to help us again over some breaks or holidays from school. The Bread House is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm.
If you have not stopped by, please do so and say “Hi” to the gang. If you want to help, come anytime M-W-F, 9am–12pm, and see where you fit in! Thanks as always for all the Congregation and Community support!

Blessings for Children School Supplies All Year Long! Do you remember how exciting it was when you had brand new, sharpened pencils, all the colors a box of Crayola crayons could offer, fresh pens and a crisp supply of notebook paper to start out the school year? Well, it’s here! August 10th is the first day of school in Okaloosa County and our missions team, with our church family’s generous support, will be helping in-need students with backpacks and school supplies at our annual August 1st Back to School event. We hope to serve 200+ students that day but the school year is almost 10 months long and those school supply needs continue for many children throughout the year. That is why Blessings for Children offers school supplies, along with clothing (t-shirts, underwear, and socks) diapers, and personal care items each Wednesday, all year long. If you find yourself with “extras” of back-to-school items (crayons, scissors (children’s blunt or pointed), glue sticks, erasers, pencils, folders, or highlighters) please consider sharing any of those items with our Blessings for Children ministry. They will be a blessing to our families throughout the school year! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the
lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size
4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-forchildren. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm.
•
Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the
church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm
