O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Here's what you need to know this week. The Week of Sunday, July 4th •

Military Ministry - We are currently planning some new ministry opportunities for the fall, along with a new REBOOT class. Our Military Ministry also gives care packages for those deployed, medics, and nurses, morale packets for Valentine's Day, and helps support those away from their family in the dorms on Holidays. If you'd like to support these ministries financially, please note your electronic or physical gift today, saying Military Ministry. Learn More at shalimar-umc.org/military.

Back to School Bash - Join us for the Back to School drive-up event on Sun, Aug 1st, from 3-4:30pm outside in the Family Life Center parking lot. We'll distribute backpacks and school supplies to inneed elementary, middle, and high school students while supplies last. We'll also have an ice cream truck and other welcoming activities. If you want to help with this project, please contact Mary Jane Robertson, 850-499-6173 or mjr53@cox.net. There's a place for you! Another way to help is by donating any children and youth books or Bibles that are new or gently used. Please drop off books in the donation box just inside the back door of our church library.

Back in Color - Mark your calendars for Back in Color, Wed, Aug 4th at 5pm. We plan to end the summer and kick off the fall with a Wednesday night of fun for all ages. More details will be coming, but this is an event you won't want to miss.

Philip’s Focus Immediate Opportunities to Grow Can you believe this week marks the mid-way point of 2021! As we continue to see some normal coming out of a long Covid Year, I would like to lift up some of the current opportunities to grow through Shalimar United Methodist Church. Maybe you would want to consider some of these opportunities to grow this Summer! Has life been difficult and overwhelming for you? Perhaps you are looking for a one-on-one way to jump-start your growth. Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one lay, caring ministry that helps people get through difficult times or crises. We pray over assignments and consider life experiences. There is NO charge. Stephen Ministers are not counselors but people caring confidentially in the name of Jesus. Here at Shalimar, we have had trained Stephen Ministers, helping our congregation for 25 years. If you are interested in a Stephen Minister, you can let one of the pastors know or contact Sara Michaelson, Cathie Buckman, or Amanda Harris from our laity. You can contact the church office to get started as well. Do you find it difficult to make long-term commitments but long for a retreat setting? The Emmaus Walk is a 72-hour crash course in Christianity. The event is highly organized so that your needs are completely met. The three and half days are completely supported by loving people who want nothing more than for you to have a life-changing experience. Shalimar UMC has a large Emmaus Community ready to cheer you on for this life-changing experience. We also have plenty of persons eager to sponsor individuals interested in an upcoming walk. As we come out of Covid, there is less waiting for both the lady's and men's walks. Chrysalis is also available for youth beginning at age 15. If you would like to know more about Emmaus or Chrysalis, contact our church office for sponsors and information.

Are you looking for a way to learn more about the Bible and make new friends? Every Sunday at 9:30am, we have a variety of Sunday School options. There are options of lecture in style and some with more of a discussion format. Some classes are larger and some smaller. There are also classes for youth and children. So, if you are interested in Sunday School, you can show up at 9:30am at the Family Life Center and begin this new journey. Our Online Campus is new and offers opportunities to be involved from home or wherever you are located each week. For example, there are opportunities to talk about Sunday's Sermon on Mondays at 7pm. On Tuesdays, you can lift up prayer requests and join in prayer at 7pm. On Thursdays at 7pm, you can learn about the different ministry highlights in our congregations. These opportunities are all available, and it is easy to join the online community. If you need help joining online, you can contact Rev. Faith Parry. Are you looking for a class you can just drop in when you are available? Pastors Class requires no advance study, and you can come and go as your schedule allows. Pastor's Class is a good general option for all in our congregation. The class meets on Wednesday at 6pm at Cross Corner. The pastors lead Pastor's Class, and the focus is the background for the upcoming sermon. By the way, a few people think this class is just for pastors! HA HA. The name comes from pastors leading the class and is open for everyone interested in mid-week inspiration and study. There will be more discipleship opportunities announced in the coming weeks for August. However, I did want you to know what we have in July so that you do not have to wait. There are great opportunities available for you! Have a great 4th of July! We hope to see you at Shalimar UMC this Sunday for our special patriotic services and at 11:07! Shalom, Philip

Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org

Christ Caring for People through People That’s the motto of Stephen Ministry. The Stephen Minister’s role is to bring God’s love into the lives of people who are going through a difficult time or experiencing a crisis. What do Stephen Minister’s do? They listen to you, care for you, support and encourage you, and pray with and for you. And in the midst of this confidential, one-to-one, caring relationship, God’s healing love comes pouring through.

Our SUMC Missions team will host a community outreach "Back to School" event on Sun, Aug 1st, from 3-4:30pm outside in our FLC parking lots. While supplies last, backpacks and school supplies will be distributed in a "drive by fashion" to in-need elementary, middle, and high school students from our community. In addition, we will have an ice cream truck and other welcoming activities offered by several SUMC ministries for those attending, including our pastors sharing prayers with the families, and our church’s library providing children and youth books and Bibles to be taken home. Please share this information with any families you know who would benefit from extra help in preparing for the upcoming school year. If you want to help with this needed and special mission project to share God's blessings with others, please contact Mary Jane Robertson, (850) 499-6173 or mjr53@cox.net. There's a place for you! And another way to help is by donating any children/youth books or Bibles that are gently used or new. Please drop off books in the donation box just inside the back door of our church library.

We will never run out of this…….Ephesians 6:18 After we close Blessings for Children each Wednesday, we inventory what has gone out and what needs to be restocked to be ready for the children Jesus will send us the next week. It's with a prayer, held breath, and your generous support that we prepare for what we will need each week. There is always a chance we did not stock enough #6 diapers, or medium boy’s t-shirts, or 18-month-old onesies, or any of the items we share. However, we offer something at BFC each week that we know we will never run out of, the listening ear of our Heavenly Father and the praying warriors of our church. Ephesians 6:18 tells us to "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." As we meet with each family, we always ask for their prayer requests. Even if we do not understand each other's languages, we can understand a request for prayer for someone's "familia/family." Our church's prayer team receives each request and has prayed for surgeries, finances, traveling mercies, pregnancies, jobs, health, restoration, grief, peace, food, safety. All requests we have made ourselves. So, while we may, on occasion, run out of a needed item, we will never run out of being able to share in praying for our families. Thanks to a Heavenly Father who always hears, a praying church family, and our SUMC prayer ministry team! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the

lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size

4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes,

toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-forchildren. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. •

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the

church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm

Week 62 was interesting. We were slow Monday and Wednesday, then Friday hit, and it was standing room only. We had seven new visiting families and gave out 136 bags of food on Friday alone. Remember, the Bread House is a Community Outreach program, and we have all kinds of folks come in for food and some dropping off food. We had one visitor who we had not seen in a couple of months, and we asked where he had been? His response was I only come when I really need some food. If you have not stopped by, please do so and say “Hi” to the gang. If you want to help, come anytime M-W-F, 9am–12pm, and see where you fit in! Thanks as always for all the Congregation and Community support! Week 62 Numbers Bags Collected - 288 Bags Given Out - 250 Gift cards Given - 0 Members Served - 190

A Word From Our Librarian It's "me" again. The best friend of your SUMC library ever! With a bit more browsing time this visit, I checked out some gatherings there that I had not discovered before. For instance, I found a collection of books written by Max Lucado, Beth Moore, Joyce Meyer (I did not realize she had written a fiction book, did you?), Charles Swindoll, Billy Graham (and many other Grahams), and Philip Yancy. Around the corner, I found a rather large selection of books written just for women; others for men; and a shelf of parenting books that drew my attention fully. Further back, in a corner, I was tickled to find quite a few books about Methodism. Since I am "new" here, it was a good way to learn more. As I continued around the room, the shelf labeled "America" grabbed my attention. What a pleasure and a treat to find many books written about our great USA! I looked around for, perhaps, a box or a bag in which to carry the many books I was collecting to check out when the cute little bell on the door announced the arrival of, wait for it, the LIBRARIAN!!! Her smile of welcome (and offer of a shopping bag) gave me a chance to find more about this wonderful library. I will share more of what I found out about the library's history later, but I was especially happy to learn from the Librarian that donations of children's books are now being sought. A donation box near the back door awaits any drop-offs of kids' books (all ages) in good condition! They will be given to the children who come to the Back to School Bash on August 1st! I also found out that the Bash, an annual outreach to the community, is a way to make certain children are "armed and ready" to begin the new school year. What a church this is - to reach out to so many in such neat and necessary ways. I am thinking about volunteering myself. I plan to return in a few days with some of my kids' gently used books for the Back to School Bash!
