O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.
Here's what you need to know this week.

Philip’s Focus PUTTING OUR OARS IN THE WATER
What would Shalimar United Methodist Church be capable of if everyone put their oar in the water and rowed in the same direction? Even better, what if we all rowed in the direction of living as a disciple and making disciples of Jesus Christ? My challenge is just that moving into our Fall (Back-to-School Season). So, what are our tangible ways of putting our oar in the water? First, we can be present in worship each week. Worshipping every week is possible for everyone at Shalimar UMC. Weekly worship has never been more available. First, you can worship in person. Unless we are prevented by health or out of town, let’s recommit our attendance for in-person weekly worship. A former parishioner told me, “Worshipping each week is the easiest habit to break and the hardest to make.” This was before Livestream. Now there is no reason not to attend. If we do have a reason to miss church in person, we can watch the service on Livestream or even later in the week on our archived services. I want to challenge all connected in our church to worship each week! Let’s put our oars in the water!
Second, we can be generous in our giving to the Lord. I want to thank our congregation for their continued generosity this year! You have been incredibly faithful! What if all of us put our oars in the water of generosity? This church would have a greater impact! Let’s all put our oars in the water! Third, put our oar in the water to commit to growing as a disciple each day. This could be done with a daily devotional, an act of service, becoming a part of a study group, small group, or prayer group. Can we imagine everyone growing in Christ each day? My hope for 2022 is that everyone connected with Shalimar UMC will be growing as a disciple each day. Let’s put our oars in the water! Fourth, what if every Sunday School class, existing study group, Emmaus reunion group, ministry group, and mission group put their oar in the water? WOW! There would be so much energy, synergy, and momentum from our existing groups! I will be meeting with our current group leaders to explore how we can all put our oars in the water and paddle in the same direction into 2022. Let’s put our oars in the water! One other thing, I quoted Dr. Si Mathison last Sunday in saying, “You cannot rock the boat when you are paddling the boat!” We live in some “boat rocking” times. People are Monday morning quarterbacking most everything nationally, locally, and sometimes even in the church! We serve an awesome and powerful God. We can choose a different path in the church! LET’S PUT OUR OARS IN THE WATER! Shalom, Philip

John Wesley the founder of the Methodist movement had 3 general rules that he hoped everyone who called themselves Methodist would strive to achieve. Join us for 7 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm, as we look at each of these rules and how we can apply these great teachings to our daily lives! It is a great way to learn more about our Wesleyan heritage as well as some practical ways we strive to be more like Christ in the world today! Led by Rev. Matt Langford in room 207.

Our SUMC Missions team will host a community outreach "Back to School" event on Sun, Aug 1st, from 3-4:30pm outside in our FLC parking lots. While supplies last, backpacks and school supplies will be distributed in a "drive by fashion" to in-need elementary, middle, and high school students from our community. In addition, we will have an ice cream truck and other welcoming activities offered by several SUMC ministries for those attending, including our pastors sharing prayers with the families, and our church’s library providing children and youth books and Bibles to be taken home. Please share this information with any families you know who would benefit from extra help in preparing for the upcoming school year. If you want to help with this needed and special mission project to share God's blessings with others, please contact Mary Jane Robertson, (850) 499-6173 or mjr53@cox.net. There's a place for you! And another way to help is by donating any children/youth books or Bibles that are gently used or new. Please drop off books in the donation box just inside the back door of our church library.
Men's Barn Meeting - August 12th 7:00-8:30ish - Molino, FL. The bus heads to the "barn" (literally) at 4:30pm on the second Thursday of each month from the church. Don't worry about having to drive the distance! We will get you there in time for a hearty steak dinner (FREE of charge), and you can sleep on the way back!
Just to make the evening even better, great music is provided by the "Barn Band" both while you are enjoying your meal and afterward! Each month there is a different guest speaker, and some very powerful testimonies are shared. This time you will hear from the powerful orator, Evangelist Neal Hatfield, who carries a special burden for young people. When he is not traveling to hold revivals, crusades, or special events, he and his wife, Sue, co-direct the expansion and operations of Uplands Reach Conference Center, which they founded in 1988. The Hatfield’s are graduates of Heritage College in Orlando, FL. Please join the men of the church (sorry, ladies, men only) for a great night of worship and fellowship! For questions, contact John Patterson @ 850-737-1007. More info is also available at www.mensbarnmeeting.com.
Week 66 at the Bread House A record this past week was 10 new families visiting the Bread House. The total number of family members was 46. We average between 7-10 new families each week! It is amazing that we still don’t see a slow down in the number of folks in need. Pic #1. Introducing Jon Peters (standing), son of Pete, Jon comes every Thursday to help with the Destin Harvest drop-off and breaks down boxes for the dumpster. Helping Jon this week is Theo Peters (sitting). He came to oversee the operation and make sure Jon was kept on his toes! Everyone is welcome to visit the Bread House and offer some help! Our hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9am until 12pm.

Blessings for Children School Supplies All Year Long! Do you remember how exciting it was when you had brand new, sharpened pencils, all the colors a box of Crayola crayons could offer, fresh pens and a crisp supply of notebook paper to start out the school year? Well, it’s here! August 10th is the first day of school in Okaloosa County and our missions team, with our church family’s generous support, will be helping in-need students with backpacks and school supplies at our annual August 1st Back to School event. We hope to serve 200+ students that day but the school year is almost 10 months long and those school supply needs continue for many children throughout the year. That is why Blessings for Children offers school supplies, along with clothing (t-shirts, underwear, and socks) diapers, and personal care items each Wednesday, all year long. If you find yourself with “extras” of back-to-school items (crayons, scissors (children’s blunt or pointed), glue sticks, erasers, pencils, folders, or highlighters) please consider sharing any of those items with our Blessings for Children ministry. They will be a blessing to our families throughout the school year! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the
lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size
4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-forchildren. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm.
•
Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the
church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.

SPLASH OF JOY I STUDY WILL BEGIN AUGUST 18TH
We are so excited to get back to study after a summer break. All of you ladies are invited to come to study the book of Haggai (which is only 38 verses long). This Old Testament study, TAKE COURAGE, by Jennifer Rothschild, will show us how the prophet Haggai reminded the Jewish people that they could take courage and work because God was with them. We will learn together how to walk confidently in our callings, stay motivated when obstacles make us want to quit, and defeat discouragement through God's presence. We meet from 9:30-11:00, and the location on our campus will be announced later. We will provide childcare with reservation only!! Books will be available for purchase on the first day of this 7-week study. Questions may be referred to Sara Michaelson 850-865-3343. Also, Melanie Bandy will be leading a Zoom class from the same book and same dates. If you are interested in doing the study by zoom, please contact Melanie, melaniejbandy@gmail.com, and order your book if you are not able to pick it up at the church.
Jude, Contending for the Faith in Today’s Culture Jackie Hill Perry Have you ever wondered just how much God can pack into one small book of the Bible? Well, join us as we explore the book of Jude, a one-chapter book with only 25 verses. There is a lot that God wants to reveal to us about contending for faith in a world of unbelief while protecting us from falling into the same deceptions that have negatively affected both the church and our culture. In this 7-session study, Jackie Hill Perry will help us learn to recognize God’s Word as an anchor in the ever-shifting cultural climate, to discover your God-given identity in a world of deception, and to see how this small, obscure book in Scripture still speaks to the church today. SPLASH OF JOY II will begin this study on August 25, 2021. We meet every Wednesday from 9:30 – 11:30, participating in both small and large group settings. Location will be announced at a later date. WE invite you to join us as we study God’s Word and enjoy Christian fellowship with other women of faith. To register or for more information, please contact Cathie Buckman at 850-797-6936 or email at cathiebuckman@gmail.com.
