Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. Philip’s Focus Staying on Mission saying “Yes to Disciple 2022” The year 2022 will be here in about five months. On the horizon will be unprecedented new opportunities to grow as a disciple each week through Shalimar United Methodist Church! The goal is to live out our mission of “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world” through every worshipper of Shalimar United Methodist Church. The next five months will be a time of organization, invitation, and preparation with an eye toward implementation in the New Year 2022. WE can help by putting our “oar in the water” and paddling in this direction of discipleship. So be ready to say “YES” to Disciple 2022!

How will WE measure weekly discipleship? January will offer a new discipleship metric that WE will monitor all year. It will be simple and applicable to anyone’s circumstances. There will be options, flexibility, and adaptability to encourage everyone to participate. The hope is that this growth in our discipleship, our primary mission, will grow the church and grow the church in the right direction.

In the short term, there are three opportunities to help US put our oar in the water. First, WE do not have to wait for 2022. There are some discipleship opportunities available this fall. WE can find a list of new and existing classes available on Wednesday Night for the upcoming season,

ongoing Sunday School classes, and weekly studies like, Splash of Joy, to jump into this fall on our website under Fall Spiritual Growth Opportunities.

Second, the new sermon series “WE ARE SHALIMAR!” will be preached this month. WE are taking a deeper dive into our three discipleship verbs REACH, TEACH, and SEND. In doing so, WE will affirm our past and blaze a discipleship trail for the present and future.

Third, there will be a REVEAL party on August 23rd! No, not the kind of reveal party of “boy” or “girl” but rather rolling out some plans for saying, “Yes to Discipleship 2022!” The date is August 23rd at 6pm. There will be a free dinner, and WE will present some of the layers of plans to help make this discipleship possible! Everyone is welcome!

Place “YES to discipleship 2022” on our prayer list. May the Holy Spirit overwhelm our congregation and community so that Ephesians 3:20 is made possible “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than WE ask or imagine.” Living out the mission of Jesus! Let it be so, Lord! Shalom, Philip

After a year of Covid 19 lockdowns, who are ready to get active again in the name of the Lord?! Join us for a Run for God study! Even if you've never run before, you can join our class and learn everything from picking out the right shoes to completing your first 5K with us in November at Shalimar UMC! The Run for God Challenge is a guide to running and a 12-week training plan aimed at running a 5K, but with a Christian focus. The 5K Challenge introduces runners to the parallels of faith and fitness. The workout plans, discussion questions, and Bible verses make it both a practical resource and workbook for individuals and groups, especially new runners. Run for God is for all levels of runners, even those who have never run. Learn to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ while understanding the parallels of running and faith. Sign up for class materials: https://runforgod.com/ classes/sumc-run-for-god, and even if you don't want to buy materials but still participate, the class instructor can sign you up manually.

John Wesley the founder of the Methodist movement had 3 general rules that he hoped everyone who called themselves Methodist would strive to achieve. Join us for 7 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm, as we look at each of these rules and how we can apply these great teachings to our daily lives! It is a great way to learn more about our Wesleyan heritage as well as some practical ways we strive to be more like Christ in the world today! Led by Rev. Matt Langford in room 207.

Men's Barn Meeting - August 12th 7:00-8:30ish - Molino, FL. The bus heads to the "barn" (literally) at 4:30pm on the second Thursday of each month from the church. Don't worry about having to drive the distance! We will get you there in time for a hearty steak dinner (FREE of charge), and you can sleep on the way back!

Just to make the evening even better, great music is provided by the "Barn Band" both while you are enjoying your meal and afterward! Each month there is a different guest speaker, and some very powerful testimonies are shared. This time you will hear from the powerful orator, Evangelist Neal Hatfield, who carries a special burden for young people. When he is not traveling to hold revivals, crusades, or special events, he and his wife, Sue, co-direct the expansion and operations of Uplands Reach Conference Center, which they founded in 1988. The Hatfield’s are graduates of Heritage College in Orlando, FL. Please join the men of the church (sorry, ladies, men only) for a great night of worship and fellowship! For questions, contact John Patterson @ 850-737-1007. More info is also available at www.mensbarnmeeting.com.

SPLASH OF JOY I STUDY WILL BEGIN AUGUST 18TH

We are so excited to get back to study after a summer break. All of you ladies are invited to come to study the book of Haggai (which is only 38 verses long). This Old Testament study, TAKE COURAGE, by Jennifer Rothschild, will show us how the prophet Haggai reminded the Jewish people that they could take courage and work because God was with them. We will learn together how to walk confidently in our callings, stay motivated when obstacles make us want to quit, and defeat discouragement through God's presence. We meet from 9:30-11:00, and the location on our campus will be announced later. We will provide childcare with reservation only!! Books will be available for purchase on the first day of this 7-week study. Questions may be referred to Sara Michaelson 850-865-3343. Also, Melanie Bandy will be leading a Zoom class from the same book and same dates. If you are interested in doing the study by zoom, please contact Melanie, melaniejbandy@gmail.com, and order your book if you are not able to pick it up at the church.

Jude, Contending for the Faith in Today’s Culture Jackie Hill Perry Have you ever wondered just how much God can pack into one small book of the Bible? Well, join us as we explore the book of Jude, a one-chapter book with only 25 verses. There is a lot that God wants to reveal to us about contending for faith in a world of unbelief while protecting us from falling into the same deceptions that have negatively affected both the church and our culture. In this 7-session study, Jackie Hill Perry will help us learn to recognize God’s Word as an anchor in the ever-shifting cultural climate, to discover your God-given identity in a world of deception, and to see how this small, obscure book in Scripture still speaks to the church today. SPLASH OF JOY II will begin this study on August 25, 2021. We meet every Wednesday from 9:30 – 11:30, participating in both small and large group settings. We will meet in your 207 in the Family Life Center. WE invite you to join us as we study God’s Word and enjoy Christian fellowship with other women of faith. To register or for more information, please contact Cathie Buckman at 850-797-6936 or email at cathiebuckman@gmail.com.

Blessings for Children School Supplies All Year Long! Do you remember how exciting it was when you had brand new, sharpened pencils, all the colors a box of Crayola crayons could offer, fresh pens and a crisp supply of notebook paper to start out the school year? Well, it’s here! August 10th is the first day of school in Okaloosa County and our missions team, with our church family’s generous support, will be helping in-need students with backpacks and school supplies at our annual August 1st Back to School event. We hope to serve 200+ students that day but the school year is almost 10 months long and those school supply needs continue for many children throughout the year. That is why Blessings for Children offers school supplies, along with clothing (t-shirts, underwear, and socks) diapers, and personal care items each Wednesday, all year long. If you find yourself with “extras” of back-to-school items (crayons, scissors (children’s blunt or pointed), glue sticks, erasers, pencils, folders, or highlighters) please consider sharing any of those items with our Blessings for Children ministry. They will be a blessing to our families throughout the school year! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the

lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size

4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-forchildren. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm.

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the

church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.

Last Sunday, in 8:00 worship, Pastor Philip presented Keith Latimer with the 2nd Annual David Dale Hospitality Award. Join us in worship this Sunday, August 8th where we'll replay the moment in the other services. If you see Keith around on campus, congratulate him on this prestigious award.

Heartfelt thanks to our generous church family for making last Sunday’s Back to School event possible. The Back-to-School Bash is one of the ways our SUMC Mission team reaches out to our community. Thirty-three enthusiastic, faith-filled volunteers welcomed the families to our campus and ensured the love of God went out to 126 children and youth through the sharing of backpacks and grade-appropriate school supply kits. The families who visited with us were able to share a prayer with our pastors and Stephen Ministers. In addition, they took home books and Bibles provided by our church library and your donations. The families also received dental kits, visited the Children’s Ministry craft table, and enjoyed treats at the ice cream truck. The remaining backpacks and supply kits will continue to help children and youth in need through Meigs Middle School and Longwood Elementary and our ongoing church missions, Bread House and Blessings for Children. Our SUMC Mission team is blessed to offer so many opportunities to “love one another!” Thank you for your help and support with this event. We welcome and appreciate your participation in all our events! The Mission Team meets every 3rd Tuesday at 6pm in the Cross Corner Fellowship Hall. Please consider joining us!

Prayer Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place. Prayer Chain You can add someone to the Prayer Chain, share an answered prayer or receive prayer requests and praises through email. We are excited to announce the prayer list can now be accessed on the website or app. Please call the office for the password to this page.
