Here's what you need to know this week. The Week of Sunday, September 20th •

Focus on Discipleship - Philip has challenged the staff and laity to renew their focus on discipleship. He kicked things off with a presentation of the Sermon on the Mount 2 weeks ago. Being a disciple of Christ means learning from each other and scripture so that we can become more like Christ every day. This life-long journey is better when done together. The path of discipleship is unique. SUMC has various opportunities to help deepen your spiritual life based on what you are seeking right now. On our homepage, shalimar-umc.org, you will find an image that says, "Discipleship Opportunities." Here you'll find word about Philip's Focus on Discipleship and other groups offered. Click any group image to get more information on the group, the group leader's contact info, and more. The pastors are also leading studies that can give you a solid foundation for your discipleship journey. Philip's study is on the Sermon on the Mount, Matt's is on the Parables of Jesus, Faith’s is on Discipleship as a whole, and Brad's is on worship.

Attendance - We would love for you to register your attendance with us. You can fill out the webform found online shalimarumc.org/worship-attendance, or you can send an email to Faith@shalimar-umc.org.

Philip’s Focus A Checklist for After the Hurricane As I write this article, I am still a bit "foggy-headed" from virtually no sleep last night. We knew Sally was coming; however, she intensified in the middle of the night, dropped even more rain, and lingered throughout Wednesday. Many of the hurricanes projected toward us do not live up to the advance hype. Sally proved to be more than expected. Our prayers go out to all victims in the path of Hurricane Sally throughout the Southeast. Locally, our thoughts and prayers go out to all those whose homes received damage from the severe flooding caused by the unprecedented rainfall. Karen and I are without power, just like many of you. The sounds of generators can be heard in our neighborhood's background as I try to write this article. I need to write quickly before my computer battery loses power. But what really needs to be said? You know hurricane's teach us valuable lessons. What are these lessons? I would call these lessons "A Checklist for After the Hurricane." A Checklist for After the Hurricane 1. Give God thanks for making it through another storm. (we have had plenty in 2020) God is good so live every day as a gift! 2. Keep any property loss in perspective. You can rebuild over time. Do not fret about stuff. 3. When you go to the store, and things are chaotic, be extra kind to people. (After a Hurricane we need civility, not hostility.) 4. Use the time of yard clean-up to get to know your neighbors better. Allow some time for conversations 5. Listen to what people are asking for and try to help. Be extra kind to strangers and treat others as you want to be treated. 6. Check on people when they come to mind. Call, text, or email them. 7. Offer thanks to police officers, firefighters, paramedics, medical personnel, our military, and all who serve. They are under extra pressure following a hurricane. If possible, offer them signs of hospitality and appreciation. 8. Be extra kind and loving to your own family. Being without power can get on everyone's last nerve. Do not take your family for granted and use the time to create some good memories. 9. Use the "time away out of routine" to your advantage. Focus on what is important in life, like relationships and love.

10. Be nimble with simple and spontaneous acts of kindness. Do them now! Why wait? Do not overthink being kind to others! Storms can bring out the worst or best in people! As we go through yet another storm in 2020, I pray Sally will bring out our best! Let us be our best for strangers, neighbors, and family following the aftermath of a category 2 hurricane!

Shalom, Philip

Blessings for Children 1 Peter 4:10 "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others...." Through this church family's generosity and support, Blessings for Children strives to meet the many needs of the children in our community by providing limited clothing, diapers, personal care items, and school supplies, along with receiving prayer concerns that our church's prayer team lifts up to our gracious Heavenly Father. As much as we would like to, we cannot meet every need a family may have. However, scripture tells us in 1 Peter, "each of us should use whatever gift we have received to serve others‌." and while this takes place daily throughout this church, I want you to know how those gifts were shared recently at our ministry. Two women came to the Blessings for Children house to see what our ministry could do to help the eight children they were struggling to provide for together in one home. While we were able to assist in the ways we could as a ministry, there were other needs we had no idea how to meet. They had no air conditioning in their home and a broken refrigerator. But because this church family is deep in gifts and skills and willingness to serve and share, we called Pastor Brad to see if there were other ways our church might help. He came right over to the house to talk with the women, heard their situation, and prayed with them while offering to reach out to others in our congregation with specific skills and gifts that might help with their particular needs. And did they ever help! Ed Keller, John Foeller, and William Schenck went right over to their home. They identified and repaired the problems with the air conditioning. Then went above and beyond in providing a replacement refrigerator! The rest of verse 1 Peter 4:10 goes on to say, "....as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." Blessings for Children is so grateful to all in our church family who are faithful stewards in sharing their gifts, skills, and time to meet needs wherever and whatever they are! If you would like to join with us at Blessings for Children in sharing your gifts, skills, and service, please consider any of the following: Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Consider donating items we distribute to the children: Diapers and pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks, underwear, children's toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash or soap, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute is on our website at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-

for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesday from 11:30 am - 3:30 pm. Children's bibles and bible stories and activity books are also a joy to receive and distribute! Spanish language Bibles are always needed! A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children allows us to shop for needed items. New volunteers are always welcome! There is no regular commitment required.

Another huge week for donations at the Bread House! We continue to have a steady stream of folks who need our help. We were open Labor Day and had a huge day! Hunger doesn’t take a holiday! In the picture is Brian with our Friday Manager, Donna. We want to lift-up Brian. He comes every day and gathers food for his neighbors who are struggling. Many of them have no transportation, so Brian asks them what they need, fills out our form, comes to the Bread House, collects the items, and delivers the food. Brian started coming when we were working out of an SUV in the FLC parking lot. Since the beginning, he has helped us deliver food to the Shalimar Ballpark and homebound folks who live in the Shalimar apartments.

On another note: We have completed the walkway and deck to the Bread House this week. Now there is no more walking through dirt and stumps to get to the Bread House! The deck will allow us to have a seating area for our visitors. Thanks for all you do! Have a great week! Bless you! Bags Collected Bags Given Out Gift cards Given Out Members Served
