O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Keeping Perspective in Stressful Times Would you agree our mental health has been tested for the last eighteen months? The presence of stress, worry, and depression can come to even the strongest people. What can be done to take care of our mental health? In my role as pastor, I am learning in this unique time how to manage my perspective and also seek to maintain a non-anxious presence to those in our congregation. What are ways to maintain good mental health?
1. Pray honestly to God about matters that make you nervous, afraid, and are beyond our control. God is a very present help in times of trouble. Psalm 46:1
2. Exercise several times a week. Running works for me. When I run, my stress becomes so much more manageable. What works for you? Walking? The Gym? Something else? Make exercise a part of your plan.
3. Make sleep and good rest a priority. Disengage from bad news at sleep time. Count sheep. Do what you need to do to get the worries out of your head. One secret remedy I have is to find the most “boring” tv show possible. This works for me every time. I am asleep in minutes. By the way, I have some old sermons on tape I can loan you too!
4. Talk honesty with a friend about the things that trouble you. Doing this always seems to help keep perspective. Friends are our most valuable asset when our burdens become too heavy.
5. Reach out for help. Do not try to carry the “weight of the world” on your shoulders alone. In our congregation, we have pastors, trained Stephen Ministers, and friends willing to walk alongside you and listen. Most everyone has burdens these days. The good news is we do not have to go solo. Reach out for help.
If you ever need to call and talk, I am glad to listen. These are exceptional days. We will likely look back in a few years and marvel at how many challenges we had to navigate. The beauty of the church is we have the Good Lord and each other through these times. God is also shaping His Church in such times so that greater ministry can proceed forth! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor

Jude, Contending for the Faith in Today’s Culture Jackie Hill Perry Have you ever wondered just how much God can pack into one small book of the Bible? Well, join us as we explore the book of Jude, a one-chapter book with only 25 verses. There is a lot that God wants to reveal to us about contending for faith in a world of unbelief while protecting us from falling into the same deceptions that have negatively affected both the church and our culture. In this 7-session study, Jackie Hill Perry will help us learn to recognize God’s Word as an anchor in the ever-shifting cultural climate, to discover your God-given identity in a world of deception, and to see how this small, obscure book in Scripture still speaks to the church today. SPLASH OF JOY II will begin this study on August 25, 2021. We meet every Wednesday from 9:30 – 11:30, participating in both small and large group settings. We will meet in your 207 in the Family Life Center. WE invite you to join us as we study God’s Word and enjoy Christian fellowship with other women of faith. To register or for more information, please contact Cathie Buckman at 850-797-6936 or email at cathiebuckman@gmail.com.

Attention all Parents Bible and Worship is for 4-year-olds - 5th grade
We are excited about some changes happening on the first Sunday of the month! The 9:30 session of Worship and Bible will continue in our usual classrooms. The 11:00 session will begin by worship with the adults in the Freedom Service. The Kidz Club Choir will sing at the beginning of the service. After their song, the worship portion of Worship and Bible will happen in the Freedom Service. Children age 4-2nd grade will join the singing and then leave the service with their teacher and go to their classroom for Bible Class. Grades 3rd-5th will remain in the Freedom service. They may either sit with their parents or sit with their teacher. Children are always welcome in any of our worship services! We are excited to offer a variety of worship options for children to be with their church family! FYI - We haven’t done it yet, but hopefully, the children will learn the first song the team is singing next month so we can participate in a fuller way. John Wesley the founder of the Methodist movement had 3 general rules that he hoped everyone who called themselves Methodist would strive to achieve. Join us for 7 weeks on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm, as we look at each of these rules and how we can apply these great teachings to our daily lives! It is a great way to learn more about our Wesleyan heritage as well as some practical ways we strive to be more like Christ in the world today! Led by Rev. Matt Langford in room 207.

After a year of Covid 19 lockdowns, who are ready to get active again in the name of the Lord?! Join us for a Run for God study! Even if you've never run before, you can join our class and learn everything from picking out the right shoes to completing your first 5K with us in November at Shalimar UMC! The Run for God Challenge is a guide to running and a 12-week training plan aimed at running a 5K, but with a Christian focus. The 5K Challenge introduces runners to the parallels of faith and fitness. The workout plans, discussion questions, and Bible verses make it both a practical resource and workbook for individuals and groups, especially new runners. Run for God is for all levels of runners, even those who have never run. Learn to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ while understanding the parallels of running and faith. Sign up for class materials: https://runforgod.com/ classes/sumc-run-for-god, and even if you don't want to buy materials but still participate, the class instructor can sign you up manually.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV)

Blessings for Children For the Children When a group of us gathered at the church in the fall of 2018 to talk about what we believed children in our community needed and how Christ would want us to serve them, our focus was always “for the children.” The services and items we share at Blessings for Children and even our name evolved from that mission statement. It is affirmed each time someone drops off a donation at the #10 house saying it’s something they think the children could use or enjoy, or graciously gives a financial gift to purchase the items we share, or when our volunteers walk through the door eager to serve. All of this is “for the children.” A few weeks ago, I was in line at Walmart with a cart full of items that were clearly “for the children” - school supplies, clothing, diapers. An elderly gentleman in a mobility scooter in the line next to me asked me why I had so many items. I explained about our Shalimar UMC’s mission ministry, and he dug around in his pocket and pulled out a crumpled bill and reached out to me with a true twinkle in his eyes and said, “For the children!” If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the
lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size
4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimarumc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm.
•
Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the
church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.
