Annual Report 2016

Shalva leads the way the world understands, cares for and embraces disability. “Every time I meet members of Shalva’s staff, volunteers, and the extended Shalva family; I come to understand what is love, what is endless dedication, what is giving. And for this I thank you.”

“I wish to acknowledge the remarkable work of the Shalva organization and the invaluable role this organization has played in Israel’s development.”

“All those who criticize Israel should come to Shalva and witness the other side of Israel. The most noble, loving and caring Israel. I am proud to be part of this Israel.”

Reuven Rivlin, President of Israel

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel

Shimon Peres OBM, Former President of Israel

Dear Friends, At Shalva we are always celebrating changed lives, and bringing hope and love to children with disabilities and their families. This year, Shalva’s wonderful work was significantly magnified in scope and impact as a result of our move to the new Shalva National Center. I am humbled by the incredible support and friendship with which we have been met over the past twenty-six years. When our son Yossi was injured at the age of eleven months, we could have never dreamed that seven years later he would break through his barriers of darkness and silence, and miraculously learn to communicate via sign language and speech. Remembering her desperate prayer from years before, a promise that if G-d would help so would we; my wife Malki said, “It’s payback time.” We established Shalva and it developed quickly. Today, with a staff of over 250 professionals and an additional army of volunteers, we work to help Shalva’s children and families find the support, education, therapy, and hope that they need to flourish. At Shalva our everlasting mission is a journey of realizing dreams. Our genesis is the quiet dream of a struggling mother, our daily work is realizing the dreams of each child in our care to achieve his or her fullest potential, and our legacy is the fulfillment of Israel’s dream to be a more advanced and inclusive society. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey. With heartfelt gratitude,

Kalman Samuels Founder and President, Shalva

Family support is a focal point of Shalva’s mission and an integral component of each program. Shalva supports families in navigating the complexities of raising a child with disabilities at home and empowers them to lead healthy, flourishing lifestyles. Social workers engage directly with parents, siblings, and grandparents in ongoing support groups and personal counseling sessions. Shalva’s staff involve parents as co-therapists

in their child’s rehabilitative process through parent-child therapy sessions, didactic toy lending libraries, and ongoing guidance. Educational seminars throughout the year, Bar/ Bat Mitzvah celebrations, and family-oriented inclusion events give Shalva families a uniquely supportive community context.

Community Everyone can make a difference The Shalva community is a proud clan of thousands of people from around the world who support Shalva, believe in its children, and serve as ambassadors of its tenet values: love, hope, and human dignity. Team Shalva in the Jerusalem Marathon is the mainstay of Shalva’s international community initiatives; others include climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, cycling to the Amazon River, and hiking Iceland’s lava treks. Visitors and volunteers strengthen the Shalva community by sharing Shalva’s story and replicating Shalva’s successful therapy and inclusion models across the globe.

Music and Performing Arts Revealing talent For children with disabilities, music is a unique channel for learning and non-verbal communication. Music also serves as a motivational tool that improves social skills and elicits a powerful bond among those who create and listen to it together. Music therapy is integrated into each of Shalva’s early intervention, educational, and recreational programs and is adapted to suit each stage of development. The Shalva Band performs by invitation at cultural venues and dignitary events several times a week. The band inspires crowds with its musical repertoire and charm, and continues to impact inclusion within Israeli music culture.
