Shalva, the Association for Children with Disabilities and their Families in Israel, is dedicated to providing quality care for individuals with disabilities, empowering their families, and promoting social inclusion. Non-denominational and free of charge, Shalva’s programs range from infancy to adulthood and include family support components that enable parents to raise their child with disabilities within the family framework. The organization’s advocacy initiatives, community events, and disability research continue to inspire a more inclusive Israeli society.

But Shalva’s real marathon trademark is the disability track that we established six years ago in partnership with the Jerusalem Municipality. Team Shalva is the marathon’s largest team with over 1,000 international runners, including our very own children and their families. 400 of our team members travel to Israel from other countries to participate. Through personal fundraising campaigns and an inspiring marathon weekend program, our runners play an active role in advancing a world of love, hope, and human dignity.

Shalva Band
Revealing talent The Shalva Band is one of our most celebrated inclusion programs. The band performs by invitation at cultural venues and dignitary events several times a week, inspiring crowds with their musical repertoire and charm. With the band’s growing recognition in Israel, this year we put out our first CD! Each of the band’s fifteen members started out in Shalva’s After School Activity Center program, where their musical talents were discovered and developed through years of music therapy. Today, they study, work, and volunteer in the broader community.

Shalva Hapoel Basketball team
A community of equals Shalva’s basketball team is made of exceptional teamwork, discipline, and stamina; but what characterizes it most is inclusion. Our team is part of the Hapoel national basketball association’s youth league; trained by Hapoel coaches and playing against other youth teams in the community. Once a year, we also play with the Hapoel Jerusalem team members themselves before a packed stadium at the annual Hapoel Chanuka game. Breaching social stigmas is just the tip of the iceberg; Shalva’s basketball team is creating a new cultural platform for people with disabilities in Israel.

Shalva Idol
A chance to shine For ten years Shalva Idol has been taking the stage as the largest show of its kind in Israel; performed by over 200 children with disabilities before an enthusiastic audience of nearly 2,000 people from the broader community. This highlight event combines music, vocals and drama in a truly inspiring statement of reverse inclusion. In the past Shalva’s children performed alongside celebrity artists, but this year we produced a breathtaking musical rendition of The Lion King. Every child’s abilities had the spotlight and every child was a star.

The Shalva National Center The Shalva National Center, scheduled to open in September 2016, will enable Shalva to broaden its scope of services and provide care for thousands more children with disabilities and their families. The National Center is located in the heart of Jerusalem, adjacent in the new Route 16 highway; placed purposefully by the Jerusalem Municipality to be the welcoming face of Israel’s capital. The center’s state-of-the-art facilities will host innovative therapies and programs, presenting unprecedented opportunities for individuals with disabilities in Israel. The campus includes six acres of inclusive parks open to the broader community where children of all abilities can play and grow together. The Shalva National Center is positioned to be Israel’s beacon of inclusion and an international leader in program development for individuals with disabilities.
