Greetings and welcome from all of us at Flying K Ranch. This all started with my parents in 1972, at that time there were only 3 Red Angus breeders in all of Saskatchewan. Thank you to everyone who has made this journey possible. There are many good people in the cattle business, and we appreciate your confidence in our program past and present.
We consider our sale a customer appreciation event as well as a bull sale, so please come and join us. Great to see record prices as well as some pressure taken off sourcing feed in most areas. As I write this, we have just been through some challenging calving weather and my brain is functioning like wet toilet paper, so take my footnotes with a grain of salt!
We strive to produce functional cattle that work in the real world. There is NO CREEP feeding as calves, or before weaning. With any added management (like creep feeding) data can be drastically enhanced. The bulls are fed a growing TMR ration to develop them properly and have them ready to breed. They are fed in large pens and have to walk every day to water. Weather permitting, we will pen them sale day on bare dirt to make it easier for you to appraise feet and legs. No feet have been trimmed on any of the bulls. All bulls will also be sire verified.
We will have updated weights, scrotal measurements, carcass data, and bull videos posted to our website as it becomes available. If you follow us on Facebook we usually notify you when something new has been added to the website (www.flyingkranch.ca).
Customer Service is always a top priority. Mishaps or wrecks can happen, and we have always been able to provide our customers with a spare bull to get their cows bred.
Feel free to stop out and view the bulls or their dams any time prior to the sale. We are always here, and are happy to tour you at your convenience. Online Bidding Instructions:
1) Go to www.livestockplus.ca and click on the sale listing you would like to bid on. This will take you to the register to bid icon.
2) Click on the Register to Bid Icon and this will take you to the sale lot listing.
3) To the right of the lot listing you will see a red sign up to bid icon. Click it
4) You will be asked to put in your username and password. If you do not have one, you will need to create an account. Once you create an account, you must go into the email you submitted and activate the link that was sent to you.
5) Once you have activated your account, click on the sale you would like to participate in, put in your username and password, it will bring you to the lots, click sign up or register to bid icon and a terms of conditions for the sale will come up. Scroll down to accept the terms and conditions and click submit and then you are able to view and bid on the sale online.

Epds are a measure of the expected progeny difference between a sire`s progeny compared to average performance of all the sires evaluated. It is expressed in pounds and is based on the progeny`s performance, performance of the bull & his relatives. At a yearling age these bulls have no progeny, therefore their epd accuracy is very limited and we don’t use them for our own herd bull selection. We include epds to help as a selection tool, but each producer should use their own selection criteria based on what is the best for their own herd and the direction they wish to go.
A note from Canadian Angus Association about the new Red Angus EPDs: “Canadian Red Angus members will notice this change to their cattle EPDS. These new EPDs are not comparable to your previous EPDs. So please don’t think of it as your EPDs changing. This is a completely new set of numbers, now directly comparable and on the same base as EPDs for Black Angus animals (both in Canada and the U.S.). This change will take time to adjust to and that your acceptable ranges for EPDs for your program and your environment will need to be reassessed.”
BW: Birth Weight EPD - is expressed in pounds and is the best overall prediction of a bull’s contribution to the birth weight of his calves. It is the most useful tool available in determining the calving ease status of a particular bull. Negative values = lighter birth weights, positive values = heavier than average birth weights.
WW: Weaning Weight EPD - Predicts the ability of a sire`s calves to grow from birth to weaning, expressed in pounds.
YW: Yearling Weight EPD - Predicts the ability of a sire`s calves to grow from birth to yearling, expressed in pounds.
MILK: Milk EPD- is an indicator of milking ability in daughters. If represents the differences in weaning weights of calves due to the amount of milk produced by their mothers.
TM: Total Maternal EPD - It is calculated by adding 1/2 of WW EPD and the Milk EPD. It measures the difference in weaning weight of the bull`s daughters’ calves.
CE: Calving Ease EPD - refers to the calf’s ability to grow in utero and be born unassisted. A higher score = greater “calving ease”

Care & Management of Yearling Bulls General Info
1. FEEDING: Your yearling bull still has a lot of growing to do. Feed the young bull well. You should feed 5-10 lbs of grain in addition to a full feed of good quality hay or silage from now until the start of breeding season. Recondition your bull after the breeding season to allow them to mature to their genetic capabilities. This is a very critical age as they start losing their teeth at 18-24 months. A young bull consequently eats slower and cannot utilize as rough a feed, or compete for feed, as one with permanent teeth. Research indicates that a bull’s usefulness as a 2 yr old can be retarded if not properly reconditioned after use as a yearling.
2. BREEDING SEASON: Don’t expect a young bull to compete with older bulls, or horned bulls. If intimidated by an older bull, he won’t breed effectively. A young bull, if handled properly and not dominated by other bulls, should service 20-25 females his first season. Size of the pasture and terrain also influence this. Limit the breeding season to no more than 60 days on a yearling bull. If you can’t limit the season, consider rotation to give him a rest. Watch a young bull early in the season to detect any physical problems. A virgin bull can have inadequacies undetectable except through observation.
3. HEALTH: Maintain a good general health program, salt, mineral, and fly control. Worming can make a significant difference as well as grub & louse control program.
