Thirty-six Views of Castle Hill Sue Smith 19 December 2014 – 15 February 2015 In Thirty-six Views of Castle Hill, Queensland artist Sue Smith (who lived in Townsville in 2011-12) composes her own ukiyo-e, a floating world of contemporary experience.
The paintings contemplate the bittersweet beauty of experience, with the timeless, immoveable hill as backdrop to the constant flux and impermanence of all things.

Country & Western: landscape re-imagined 1988-2013 Curated by Gavin Wilson 24 July – 20 September 2015 Country & Western: landscape re-imagined 1988-2013 is a comprehensive landscape exhibition that aims to bring into focus the contrasting insights and cultural imperatives, both Indigenous (country) and non-Indigenous (western), that have given shape and substance to our evolving attitudes and perceptions of the national landscape over the past 25 years.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
In the post bi-centennial landscape, artists have referenced the past, the future and the ever present, to identify and give a sense of place to the space they occupy. The experience can be grounded in the physical reality of a site, along with its deep, often-elusive spiritual associations. Yet, the idea of the bush as hostile and bewildering lingers on.

2015 Townsville Young Artist Awards and Annual Youth and Emerging Artist Exhibition 25 September – 11 October 2015 Townsville is home to a strong contingent of young and emerging artists, practicing in a variety of traditional and digital mediums. The annual exhibitions showcase works by a selection of these artists, with the 2015 Townsville Young Artist Awards offering prize categories for participants aged from pre-school - 18 years.
Each year, Gallery Services engages a leading Australian contemporary artist to undertake an intensive workshop for Townsville’s youth and emerging artists. The Annual Youth and Emerging Artist Exhibition features the works produced by the participants at these workshops.

Ben Quilty: after Afghanistan 16 October – 29 November 2015 Archibald Prize-winner Ben Quilty is one of Australia’s most talented and respected artists. In 2011 Quilty travelled to Afghanistan as the Australian War Memorial’s official war artist. His task was to record and interpret the experiences of Australians deployed as part of Operation Slipper in Kabul, Kandahar, and Tarin Kot in Afghanistan and at Al Minhad Airbase in the United Arab Emirates.
After spending over three weeks talking to Australian servicemen and women in Afghanistan, Ben Quilty felt an overwhelming need to tell their stories. This exhibition features work made from this experience and the close relationship he formed with his subjects. For his official war artist commission, Quilty has created large-scale portraits that focus on the intense physicality of these soldiers and on the emotional and psychological consequences of their service.

Peter Lawson: Retrospect 4 December 2015 – 7 February 2016 Peter Lawson explores over 40 years of his professional arts practice in Retrospect. Lawson has an established reputation for his fine oil paintings depicting iconic scenes and locations from his travels around the world, as well as in his home city of Townsville.
The exhibition features his intimate observations, illustrations of Henry Lawson’s written works, and a selection of new works that mark a departure from his familiar traditional realist style.

REEF 11 December 2015 – 14 February 2016 The depths of the ocean – along with the expanses of space, and the intricacies of the human brain – remain one of humanity’s greatest mysteries.
Tragically, the Great Barrier Reef is diminishing and in great peril due to numerous factors, many of which are linked to human exploitation of the environment.
Coral reefs, of which there is no finer example in the world than the Great Barrier Reef, are amazingly diverse ecosystems and also perhaps the ocean’s most dazzling jewel. Coral reef structures are stunningly varied in colour and form, and also provide a home for a large selection of marine species.
REEF is a curated exhibition, drawing sculptural works which respond to both the beauty and the vulnerability of the reef from a number of public and private collections.
In the development of this project and associated reef events throughout 2015, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery has worked closely with the community and a number of Townsville-based organisations; Australian Institute of Marine Science, Australian Marine Debris Initiative, Fibres and Fabrics Assoc. Inc., James Cook University, Museum of Tropical Queensland, Reef HQ, and Tangaroa Blue Foundation.

Diggers in the Nam Tim Page 17 April – 7 June 2015 In 1965 photojournalist Tim Page was with the Australian troops in Vietnam when they landed in Bien Hoa. Like many of those he photographed, Page was barely out of his teens, and filled with the bravado of youth. Armed with a bag of film and his camera Page captured some of the most iconic images of the Vietnam War before he was gravely injured and sent to the US to recuperate.

A Permanent Mark: the impact of tattoo culture on contemporary art 19 June – 16 August 2015 A Permanent Mark: the impact of tattoo culture on contemporary art is a ground breaking exhibition that will explore and reconcile how two distinct industries - tattooing and contemporary art - are becoming increasingly interconnected. Tattoos and body art are central to many ancient cultures and civilisations, but it is the more recent popularisation and acceptance of tattoos in Western culture that has resulted in the artform permeating into the contemporary art sphere.
A Permanent Mark: the impact of tattoo culture on contemporary art will display works by significant local, national and international tattoo and contemporary artists that evidence the crossover of styles, technology and techniques, themes and iconography.
A Permanent Mark is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, part of the Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts. Development has been supported through the Gordon Darling Foundation Domestic Travel Grant.

Transparent: Watercolour in Queensland 1850s-1980s A touring exhibition developed by the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art 18 September – 22 November 2015 Transparent explores the long and diverse history of watercolour painting in Queensland. The exhibition brings together over 150 watercolours from the Gallery’s Collection, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the medium. Used by early settlers to depict the landscape, by later artists to evoke the growing city of Brisbane
and by wartime artists to record daily activities, the medium of watercolour is portable and adaptable, perfect for capturing quick impressions. The exhibition demonstrates the medium’s important role in Queensland’s visual history from its earliest colonial beginnings.

Townsville Artist Market Hosted by Pinnacles Gallery and held at the beautiful Riverway Arts Centre on a bi-monthly basis, the Townsville Artist Market provides local artists the opportunity to sell their products at a market solely trading in handmade arts and craft goods. Including fashion, unique jewellery, home wares, one-of-a-kind gifts, homemade food products and much more, there is something for everyone. The Townsville Artist Market is a holistic entertainment event for families, employing local musicians and roaming performers at each market, and featuring art demonstrations and drop-in workshops for children.
