Brick by Brick is an exhibition by Gallery Services that explores the history of the LEGO Group. The name ‘LEGO’ comes from the two Danish words “leg godt”, meaning “play well”. This activity book will help you learn about the exhibition. The symbols below show you what to do:

Colour the LEGOÂŽ brick in your favourite colour.

The LEGOÂŽ brick was patented in 1958. Bricks from that year can still be used today! The bricks are made from a plastic called ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) polymer.

The LEGOÂŽ Minifigure In 1978 LEGOÂŽ Minifigures were launched to suit Town, Space and Castle themes.

On the left you can see one of the first LEGO Minifigures. What differences can you see between this and the modern minifigure on the right?


LEGO® designers get inspiration from many places to create characters from life ie: police officers, miners and astronauts, and from popular culture sources such as the movie franchise ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

LEGO® Certified Professionals LEGO® Certified Professionals are people who get to build LEGO® creations as a job! There are only 13 LEGO Certified Professionals in the WORLD! To be a LEGO Certified Professional you must have the following things: • Building ability • Enthusiasm for the LEGO building system • Be professional with LEGO fans and the public Ryan McNaught is the Southern Hemisphere’s only LEGO Certified Professional. He made many of the LEGO sculptures in Brick by Brick. You have the chance to build with Ryan in some free workshops with LEGO bricks at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and Willows Shopping Centre! Pick up a Public Program from the Gallery, or ring the Gallery for more details: 07 4727 9011.


Ole Kirk Kristiansen Ole Kirk Kristiansen was the man who started the LEGO Group. He was a carpenter and started to make wooden toys in 1932. During the 1930s and 1940s, the company made many pull-along toy animals. You can see an example of one in the timeline! In 1947, Ole Kirk bought a plastic injection-moulding machine and by 1951, half of the LEGO Group’s toys were made from plastic! Invent a pull-along toy and draw it here:


LEGOÂŽ papercraft 1. Decorate the white areas however you want! 2. Cut along the solid outer lines (with an adult!) 3. Fold along the dotted lines. 4. Glue the tabs to stick your brick together. 5. You now have your very own papercraft model of a LEGOÂŽ brick!
