EXHIBITION SUMMARY

OVERVIEW Metamorphosis was the 2016 Glencore Children’s Exhibition, and focused on the stunning hybrid life-forms of leading Australian glass artist, Tom Moore. Moore’s menagerie of characters combined botanical, zoological, and mechanical elements. Drawing inspiration from “the sharp observational wit of literary absurdists such as Edward Lear and…Dr Seuss” (Slade, 2016), the works presented were simultaneously humorous and insightful, giving visitors great joy, while also providing pause for thought about the human impact on the natural world. Moore’s work offered visitors of all ages limitless narrative potential, encouraging viewers to interpret their own interaction between the characters, and the mixed media worlds the artist created for them. Beginning with measured pencil drawings of each work, Moore pushes the limits of glass to bring his characters to life in vivid colour. His relationship with glass dates back to the early 1990s at the Australian National University (ANU) glass program, and later saw him take the role of production manager at JamFactory from 1999 to 2014. Throughout his career, Moore has adapted traditional Venetian glass-blowing techniques to idiosyncratic imagery. His aim is to invigorate the audience experience of an ancient craft by developing challenging forms and innovative display strategies. This has led to opportunities to participate in high-profile exhibitions of contemporary art.

4

In many ways, the nature of Tom Moore’s practice and the complex installations imagined made this the most ambitious Glencore Children’s Exhibition to date. The community reaction to the show certainly reflected this intent; 12,835 visitors were recorded to the exhibition in total. Interaction was encouraged through numerous activities contained within the exhibition that responded to the works on display, while a host of public and educational programs were delivered. Highlights of these programs included an artist talk by Tom Moore, and a free evening comedy performance by The Umbilical Brothers.

EDUCATION Through the Creative Classrooms theme of Gallery Services’ Visual Arts Strategy, the organisation develops, implements and monitors a series of programs targeted at primary, secondary and tertiary students and arts educators in the Townsville region. The annual Glencore Children’s Exhibition not only provided a great experience for young families in Townsville, but was also a key exhibition which linked a number of Creative Classrooms programs. As well as developing a free activity booklet, and a thorough education resource which was distributed to all primary and secondary schools within the Townsville region, the exhibition featured the following Creative Classrooms programs:

The activity booklet developed for the 2016 Glencore Children’s Exhibition was engaging. Having been modelled on resources targeted to younger audiences by institutions such as the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, the booklet broke from an established format to instead take the form of a story-based colouring book, featuring Moore’s creatures and pointing out the animal, plant, and mechanical components they are composed of.

GUEST LECTURES Tom Moore spoke about his art practice in the classrooms of senior high school art students at St. Patrick’s Catholic College, Townsville Grammar School, and Thuringowa State High School. 26 August 2016 Attendance: 92 SCHOOL TOURS Guided tours of the exhibition facilitated by Gallery staff for students and teachers. 6 tours provided for different school groups on various dates Attendance: 85

EXHIBITION SUMMARY

PUBLICATION Metamorphosis: The Art of Tom Moore continued a proud Perc Tucker Regional Gallery tradition of developing highly engaging, conceptually rich shows to feature as the annual Glencore Children’s exhibition. To further explore this richness of concept and content, the Glencore Children’s Exhibition was accompanied for the first time in 2016 by a beautiful 60 page, soft cover publication. The publication contained colour reproductions of works selected for display within the exhibition; complemented by Tom’s original drawings as design elements; a short passage penned by Shane Fitzgerald, former Manager Gallery Services; an Artist Statement by Tom Moore; and the major curatorial essay Metamorphosis by Eric Nash, Curator Gallery Services. To ensure the publication is available to members of the community, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery has distributed copies to public libraries in keeping with Legal Deposit requirements.
