Graphic Design Unit 4 路 Shane Thornton
Opening Statement My generation was the only starting point that gave me an interest within the exam question booklet but I am happy that I have chosen this as my starting point in my project. I feel this project will mean that I can explore my skills of Dreamweaver, making a website at the end of the project which is fully functional and working. In the past few years I have been prone to making websites, more so recently because in my free time, I have always got a website on the go for a client. Also, within my previous projects in AS and A2, I have covered a lot in the way of branding and PR. Therefore I would like to continue the skills I have learnt through the past few years to create something that utilised everything I have learnt put into a strong final project. Within this project I am aiming to research a number of graphic designers and artist that may inspire me of where to go with the starting point of ‘My Generation’. The most obvious thing that comes to mind to me, would be the websites that everyone uses on a daily basis, whether it is a social media site or an ecommerce site designed for selling products to customers. Along with creating a website I will hopefully create some promotional material such as posters, business cards, logo for the company/business and some other promotional items. Throughout this project I will pick area that appeals to me, such as a political party, something that is detrimental on how you live. This would mean that I could create something new, have branding for this political party and produce a stunning website at the end of it as a final piece. I fell that there will be a selection of limitations that are going to come into account within the project are the colour schemes, which I am going to follow the current style of Flat User Interface (UI) is a minimalistic design approach that emphasizes the usability. This is something I followed in my previous project, mainly because it features clean, open space, crisp edges, bright colours and two-dimensional/flat illustrations. It looks professional and sophisticated having an easy to read design.

Marc Serre Analysis one
Marc Serre What I liked the most about this design is that it was simple but effective to the eye. I wanted to a logo for my political campaign that was effective and recognisable. I like this idea of using different colours; to me this is bringing different people, race, nationalities, religions, or anyone together into one place that is beneficial to everyone. The designers were invited by the agency Reservoir Kuizin collaborated to design the logo of the Coalition Avenir QuÊbec. This logo consisted of several designers who were reached during the process of creation. The colourful and creative logo, which breaks with traditional imagery identities political parties, has attracted a lot of comments in the media. This breath-taking media presence has greatly contributed to the awareness among the general public according to the designer. This is fantastic news because that is what you want and need when it comes to designing a logo for a company. It needs to be stylish and appealing to the customer so it will sell itself to the target market. This is a logo used within politics which is good; it is an approach that I have chosen to go down under the heading of My Generation. I chose to look at this piece of work because I knew it would inspire me for when I go to create my design. I will use the different colour method to symbolise differences in people all brought together to one place. This piece of work could almost be considered as abstract because of the different shapes and directions. He has used a wide variety of colours which mainly consists of bright colours such as reds, blues, yellows, and greens etc., happy colours which are vibrant. What they have done is incorporate the letter 'C' from Coalition and use it as the logo. This is effective in getting the point across, having a symbol relating to the campaign, as well as the name can be too much, but having the letter 'C' used it maybe more recognisable and bring the people in. I had a look at Marc Serre’s portfolio; he has taken to the vector based graphic route. His designs are simplistic but effective. He has used minimalistic design skills to come up with his ideas which are very inspirational. Even the most complex of his designs has a simplistic feel to them, despite going into detail. When I go into creating my response to this I will take this into account and use all the design ethics to make my design as similar to his designs, but relating to my own political campaign.
Study To create this study I used the original logo as a guide while I got the blueprint laid out, before going to colour the ‘C’ with the colours originally used. I am happy with the out come because the study looks similar to the original, but by using my skills in Illustrator to create it. I my font list to find the letter ‘C’ which matched the one used in the original design. I displayed it on a blue background just like Marc’s design.
Image I am working from. Below is the blueprint to the outlines of my study. As you can see it is a simple shape, with a lot of detail going on within the logo itself. When I go on to making my logo for my political party I will consider using this style of work, with the same colours and the triangle which shoots out from the middle.
Response What I did on hubris section of the response to Marc was to create a a logo using the same style of design used within the coalition logo. This meant choosing a different letter and the vectorising that letter. After that has been carried out, I used the pen tool to create the rays that were shooting out from the centre of the letter 'H'.
The colours I used were similar to the ones originally used so that there is a clear connection between the two. I like the idea of having different colours, as this symbolises different people, race, views etc all coming together to create one. I will carry the colour idea on when I go to produce my final logo for my political party.
Above is the final response that I ended up with which looks rather striking! The image to the left was during the process of putting all the secions together and colouring them in. This is where the shape of the ‘H’ was coming together. On the design in the top left, I create aload of boxes and lines where I would use these as guides when making the response. I used the Live Paint tool to fill each section in.
amit shrestha Analysis Two
amit shrestha I chose to look at this designer because I like the flat design which is commonly used nowadays as it is known as the clean modern design. What Amit has done with this design is used block colour, and different shades of the colour laid out effectively on a web page. The main colour he has used are greens, the entire top half of the web page is green which a neutral colour is. The overall look of the site is simple but gets the information across to the audience. When I come to making my website I will consider the design ethics that are used within this design. I will use blocks to display important information within the website to get the point across to the target market, the people who you are trying to sell yourself to. I will look into fonts to use which are bold and catchy for the site. The colours I will use will be slightly dull colours, not bright vibrant ones as I want to show certainty not miss understanding. The market that I think this website is aimed at is more younger people between the ages of 14 and their late 30/40’s because of the flat modern design that you are presented with. The content is easily readable and well presented. There is a lack of writing but that does not matter as there are plenty of images present which boosts this. The titles are all bold and easy to read on any device. The style used is square boxes with different colours within each section.
The layout of the website looks rather formal and informative to the reader. The reason why I came to this conclusion is because the site is laid out in such a way that all the information is displayed in the most effective way possible. The messages on this site are bold and eye catching which is important if you are trying to sell a company of first impressions. This means that the titles have to be bold, but not too big. Also they have to contain all the necessary information that the reader is looking for such as who you are, what you do, why should they chose you etc. The designer has carried the same flat design throughout that website on all the pages that they have designed. This means it is consistent and looks professional to the reader if everything is in the order that they are looking for things. The colours on the website are not bright and dominating colours, but more subtle colours. Even through they are solid colours you are not having difficulty reading the information because of the green background. The mood created by looking at the site, to me, is natural and relaxing purely because they have used different shades of green. Green is a neutral colour. I will consider this when creating my website for my final piece.
REsponse Political party
For my response to Marc I decided that I would respond to him by making a flat website within Illustrator using the same design ethics he has used to create the design I was responding to. I used the same colours, just rejigged them within the site. I used Novecento as the font for the headings and main content of the website. This is because this font is bold, informative and easy to read. I used squares to create the background blocks and buttons. When it came to drawing the pencil on the blog icon, I used a triangle and a rectangle with another rectangle on top. I then used the pathfinder tool to cut out the rectangle overlaying the rectangle below creating the outline of the pencil. I then removed this middle section to reveal the background. To create the camera icon I used the pen tool o great the outer shape and then two circles to make the lens. I wanted to make the icons simple so that they followed the simple and flat theme. To the left is an example of my website in context.

Dan Cotton Analysis Three
Dan Cotton Dan Cotton is a typeface designer who has created several branding related graphics for different companies over the years. Just looking at his website shows of his style of work which appear to be script fonts combined wtih a sans font making a final logo for the company he has been asked to brand. The reason why I chose to look at Dan Cotton was because I wanted to find a graphic designer who makes logos for businesses and organisations. This is because when I come to branding my political party, I will want a logo to represent that company which will be displayed all over the place in a variety of places such as on a website, on the posters, business cards, flyers etc. What I see in the design made by Dan is two different type faces utilised to make one logo. The first font used is like a script font whereas the second font is a sans serif font. These are very simplistic but they have a strong effect given off from them. They are a good representation for less is more. The script font is flowing and all links up to form the name of the business. Then you get the descriptive of what the product is. In this case the descriptives would be ‘homes’ on the top logo and ‘airlines’ would be the descriptive of Frontier, the bottom logo design. Both logos are set off on dark backgrounds whith a white typeface. These logos can be easilly reversed to show off the colour onto white, I think that for purposes to advertise his work on his site, he used the light on dark to set them off. When it comes to making my logos I will consider how he has used the typeface and how the descriptive font with the catirogry of what the company or business is below aligning it so that it all fits in with the script font.
Study
To create these logo designs I used the pen tool to go over the scrip fonts, then moved onto using a similar font to create the catigory descriptive line under the logos. As a quick study I am happy with how these have come out, and that I aim to use this idea when responding to Dan creating my political party logo. For me, the logos which I have set off from the background colours appear to have a more stronger and professional feel to them. I am more happy with the outcome of the Phillips Homes logo over the Frontier Airlines logo, mainly because of the more flowing design makes a more intresting company rather than a square edged font which leads you to dead ends. The font used above gives more of a soothing and flowing feel to it.
Response
When it came to responding to Dan Cotton I chose a font from my font list which flowed with the name of my company/organisation. I used the font Mission Script as the main font for the brand, and Myriad Pro Bold for the descriptive/catigory line. I also added two extra lines to the design so that it make the logo more complex, even though I have not carried out a terrmendus about of work to it. I felt that just having the word ‘party’ on its own looked a bit out of place, I had to try and work it around to make it look as if it is meant to be there. If I were to use this for my logo for the political party I am creating, I would prefer it if I were to have an icon to go with the type face. Some times the icon that goes with the name is more recognisable and memorisable.

Logo Development To create this logo what I had to do was is go by some sketches that I had recently create, and prouce a rough design for the logo for the my new political pary.
This was the first design that I came up with, it is simplistic but to me, does not show my creativity.
The Cube Party At this stage my design started coming together. I decided to use different colours for the represent different people, race, views etc. Bringing them all together to form one. Hence the name, ‘Cube Party bringing all sides together’. the
bringing all sides together
Here is when I came up with some more detail, I did this by making the cube more perspective.I did this by closing the gaps on the outer edges between the boxes. The centre of the cube, i made sure the gap was largest there.
Overall I feel that the new design works like a charm, it has everything I wanted within it, if not better.
I also added some gradient to the cube to give it some 3D.
What I have also done is played around with differnt font faces.

Letter Head I creted this letter head within Illustrator using the graphics which follow my political party house style. I used the logo in the upper top left of the page, with a pink line seperating the header from the main content of the letter. I have added some ipsum scriping so that it shows what the letter would look like with content on it. At the footer of the page, I added another pink line with the address and website URL. I have also added a page watermark inform of the cube icon being in the background with an opacity of 20% to make it subtle but it is there and you can see it. It isnt domination or over poweing, as well, you can write over it and you will still be easilly be able to read the content.

Final Piece View my final website live and fully functioning at http://unit4.graphics.shanethornton.co.uk
Final Piece Process
Firstly, after opening Dreamweaver, I created the header container to hold the background image which is the dark blue triangular image which will be behind the logo at the top of the website. The multicoloured bar along the time was another div within the header div. This is a background I made in Illustrator which I have used a code in Dreaweaver to repeat the background across the page so that it fits on any size screen without it being cut off and white space is present. I have made the site so that the main body is 960px wide, and the header to span across the entire screen.
I then moved onto adding the logo to the top of the page. This meant that I had to make DIV to hold the logo so that it is central. I did this by having a margin on the left and right with a margin of auto. This means the gap either side is equal at all times. I added the logo DIV into another DIV to keep it within the 960 width of the site to make sure it is central and that it cannot move.
The logo is now added and central. This then mean that I had to create the next part down on the site, this was the navigation bar which takes you from one page to another. This navigation bar does not have to contain every page on the website, just the important ones that people will look at in order to get the information they require. You may have the other pages linked off in other places within the website. The navigation consists of a blue triangular background just like the header and when the links are going to be hovered over they will turn light blue.
Final Piece Process
The rest of the site had the same principle of having DIVs to hold elements of the website. I have skipped a few steps, but it's pretty much the same as the first few steps repeated to contain the front page image, three boxes which link off to how to vote or join in. These were made with two DIVs. One which held the background colour, which is the light colour. The second is at the top with the darker colour which also contains the title for the section. I used padding to keep the type from going right up to the edge of the background DIV otherwise this can look awful. I then went on to creating the twitter feed elements such as icons and content.
Following the previous steps, I went on to inserting the footer section of the website. This meant that I would have to insert another DIV to contain the pink background. The same method as what I carried out with the head of the website. I then added another multicoloured banner to define the page from the footer. Within the footer I then had to make another DIV which was 960px wide to hold the information that I was going to include on the site. This includes the copyright information and the logo of the site.
As you can see in the screenshot above, I have now finished the footer with the logo and copyright information. I then went back to the latest news and the twitter feed section to add all the DIVs and content to make the site look as if it is working and has all the information present. The sections do not currently link to anything but will do on the next step once I have set up the sub pages which will contain the news related information which is in brief shown on the front page.
Final Piece Process
Here is the final screenshot that I have of making the website design as it was pretty much complete after this point. The news feed now links to the articles that they are related to. The rest of the site was a case of using one of the three boxes with the links to voting, donating and getting involved and making it full width of 960px.
The two screenshots above show a snippet of what the HTML and CSS coding looks like which controls the design of my website. This also make the site function how it should. When creating the site, you have to refer to this coding page so that you can insert elements within the right sections and if something goes wrong with the site, normally the only way to solve the issue is within the code. The only issue with using the code for the design of the site, if you enter the code manually, you have to have a knowledge of what each tag does to the site. A class always starts with a dot and a unique id always starts with a hashtag, this can only appear on a page once where as a class can appear as many times as you would like it to. This is useful as you can just copy and paste the HTML and not have to worry about retyping out the style in the CSS.

final evaluation I am pleased that I chose MY Generation as my project starting point as this meant that I could explore into detail what I like to accomplish within graphic design. I have a passion for web design, which was the main reason why I chose this relevant starting point. Overall I am happy with the website design that I came out with, mainly because the design idea I had originally designed in Illustrator, looked a near exact copy of it. I made sure I kept consistency throughout the making of the website with regards to colours, typeface, size, alignments etc. If I were to re-do this project again, I would consider looking into a more deeper coding side of web design and make more animations on the website using HTML5 and CSS3. I have used a short piece of CSS (Cascading Style Sheet – which contains the style of the site, if you change one colour on one page, it will change on all the pages) to make the ribbon in the upper right of the page to move up and down, subtly. I am happy that I chose to create website for the final piece, as well as choosing politics as my main area of study. This meant that I could go anywhere with it to create a branding outcome for a new organisation for a political campaign. If I was to re-do this project next time, I would consider going out to some big cities such as London to photograph some different locations where I could mock up what my design would look like in form of a poster for example. I could have done with a better billboard photograph so I could overlay my design onto it without pixilation which occurred. What I would also like to do next time is get some actors to dress up in a suit and have them as the MP trying to get them to the top. But sadly time was of the essence and I did not have time to make trips out to London from the Island to do such thing. But this is something I would deeply consider if I were to be given another opportunity in the future.
final evaluation The colour scheme I selected was a neutral colour of a dark blue; this was because I didn’t want it to be in your face, making it difficult to read the site. The other two main colours that I used for the site were light blue, the blue used within the logo that I designed, and the pink which is used in the ribbon in the top right. Throughout the website, I used different colours to distinguish different pages and categories so it stood apart from another page. Although this was a good idea at the time, if I were to re-do this colour scheme, I would perhaps make the subpages white with a blue or pink heading on each of them with a black body font. Just to make it more constant. The website did not take too long to make, I made the site within 10 hours of the 15 hours we had to make the final piece which gave me time to test the site out and create some posters and other promotional material for the campaign. This site is a pretty simple but effective site, it would not cost the client thousands of pounds pay for the work carried out to make the site, maybe a couple of hundred pounds would cover it. Obviously if I was to go deeper within the coding and made more going on, more pages, photos etc. then yes, this site my cost a bit more to the client, but I was asked to create it simply, to keep within the budget, which I fulfilled. The website is made to the correct sizes to fit a desktop screen. The website is centred so that it appears in the middle of the screen, regardless to the size or shape of it. I would like to have created a responsive website, so that it would be compatible more with a mobile device, in the sense that it would resize to fit, boxes would move around to make it easy to navigate. But where time was shot, this was the best option for the circumstances. I am pleased that I chose the graphic designers that I did chose this is because they were inspirational people who influenced my final design. Marc Seere was helpful in giving me ideas how to create my logo for the political party. Even though my final logo doesn’t look similar, I used some of the colours that he had used on his design, to go onto my logo. This also meant that I could experiment with different tools within illustrator to create a response to him.
final evaluation The second graphic designer that I looked at was Amit Shrestha who gave me inspiration to design my site how I have. I used the flat design element that they have used to come up with my final piece. Also I looked at the layout of how things were presented, where they were on relation the page, and the importance of certain things on the site. Finally, my last design was Dan Cotton; this was because of the simplistic logo design which, with a few tweaks, becomes rather effective. When I came to responding to him, used the same principle they he used, but I added two lines either side of the word ‘party’. If I was asked to re-do the whole project again, I would be delighted as I was in my element when designing the site for my final piece. Site can be viewed live at unit4.graphics.shanethornton.co.uk
