CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR) SHANGRI-LA HOTELS AND RESORTS

As the award-winning resort in Sabah, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu is the leading organization in the state of Sabah in pursuit of environmental conservation. The resort is the first organization in the Malaysian state of Sabah (Borneo) to be awarded ISO 14001 in 2000 for its Environmental Management System (EMS) which requires a yearly audit for re-certification.

Shangri-La’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) guiding principles are built on the following areas that reflect existing and emerging standards of CSR:

Sanctuary – Marine Conservation Programme

Together with the resort’s dedicated full-time CSR & Sustainability Service Leader, we:

- Conduct regular underwater and coastal clean-ups

- Create infographic boards to create awareness on marine conservation for our guests and the Do’s and Don’ts while on the islands

Embrace – Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu Adopts Local School Adoption

The resort officially adopted a local primary school located at Kitobu Inanam as one of our Corporate Social Responsibility projects.

The school is located just 30 minutes from the city centre. Some of the two hundred children attending the school come from impoverished families living in villages around the school.

Under this CSR programme, the Resort supports Kitobu Inanam Primary School through various planned activities:

- English book donations to the school’s library,

- Working with the local medical community to create medical records for the students and measure their nutrition levels,

- Maintenance and upgrading of current school infrastructure to create a safe environment for the pupils,

- Regular visits by the Resort’s employees and guests to teach the children English and

- Improve the education of the special needs pupils by working with other NGOs (NEW)
