WEEK 9 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Three rules for perspectival projection mentioned by Durer include: Firstly, all orthogonals meet at a center vanishing point. Secondly, all parallels share one vanishing point. Moreover, if parallels form a 45-degree angle with the picture plan, the distance between the central vanishing point and the vanishing point equals to that between the image plan and the eye. Finally, it can be calculated from the front or following portion that equal dimensions lessen progressively as diminished in space.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homogenous space is a mathematical space that also rational, unchanging and infinite. Producing by construction, “homogeneous space is never given space”. The geometrical concept of homogeneity can be represented by the hypothesis from each point of space, and similar shapes can be drawn in all directions and magnitudes. The space can only been view from a single perspective and the “planar cross section of the visual pyramid” can be fully duplicated by optical images. Moreover, a point made up of homogeneous space is merely a determining factor in space.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1: Unjust Berenice From this perspective, a pool can be seen in the view that describing by the viewer (Marco Polo) - “perfumed pools of the baths”. Ground level of right-hand side quadrangle is heightened to create an “imprisoned and short of stature” feeling. Moreover, this view of perspective is appropriate to show the “Unjust Berenice”, as columns divides the quad by different heights. Light is brighter on the left-hand side thus can highlight the extravagant life of characters to offer a further contrast.

Perspective 2: Just Berenice The second perspective is from opposite side of the quad, showing broader areas both included and excluded in the first perspective. The view is darker than the previous one to create a shadowy feeling, because Marco Polo observes “shadowy rooms” in “Just Berenice”. Together with perspective 1, two perspectives aim to offer a clear comparison between “Unjust Berenice” and “Just Berenice”.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 Perspective 1: Unjust Berenice This perspective indicates current condition of Berenice that viewed by Marco Polo. In order to represent “Unjust Berenice”, a significant contrast can be seen in a variety of “gorgeous and poor” characters. Two characters with “dog face” in the center are chosen to satire unjust atmosphere. Furthermore, an unbalanced scale on the left bottom is a hint of “unjust”. An old wanderer and two female refugees who placed to the right of central column show unjust directly.

Perspective 2: Just Berenice The second view is a deduction of the future Berenice - a more just Berenice. Instead of “spying sycophants and the Janizaries’ mass arrests” in “current Berenice”, Sherlock Holmes, a famous detective represents justice in the perspective. The sculpture of a female in center which holds a sword representing the force of law, holds the scales of justice is the Roman Goddess - “Themis”, the symbol for justice. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin are writing The Declaration of Independence on the left of Themis. Referencing to description such as “a network of wires” and “great cogged wheels”, those industrial material add to the perspective as well.

WEEK 4 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) According to Goodman, autographic arts depend on the author’s direct contact to judge their authenticity. Paintings and sculptures are common autographic arts. However, allographic objects usually “exist in many copies and can be produced without the direct intervention of the author. Furthermore, allographic arts refer to the art that can be reproduced remotely from the author by means of symbols. do Not imitating or reproducing things already existing, allographic arts produce new realities and use notations to image. The concept of authenticity in music, poetry or theater tends to be typical examples of allographic arts.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Defining the work of the architect, representation makes it possible for architecture to work in real complexity and to participate in the transfer of contemporary cities. However, the problem of architecture and the contemporary city is also a representative problem to some extent, the reason is that the intangible immateriality replaced tangible intangible and described the lack of image as a kind of mechanism. Therefore, a new representation technique is necessary that can participate in time and change, moving range, mobile viewpoints, and multiple programs.

FINAL DRAWINGS

With 11 different symbols, this is the final version of isometric drawing of the quad with notation. The drawing shows the movement of Marco Polo in the story of Hidden Cities 5: Berenice. Three various lines represents Light and Dark, Threshold and Passage of time respectively. Two perspective observing points mark in drawing with different colors – red and purple. Purple cones are created to represent objects such as sculpture, billboard, fountain and parterre.
