Touring Austin, Our Special Capital City

By Christy Wink
ou’ve made it to Austin – congratulations! Take one look around and it becomes clear that this is not your ordinary capital city. What is it, then, that makes this place so unique? What exactly is the special recipe for such a splendidly off-beat creation? Start with the biggest ingredient – literally – the capitol city is home to the largest state capitol building in the United States, a feat of architecture that brings to life Texas’ proud and independent history. Add to that Austin’s unique politics; long known as a single blue dot in a sea of red, Austin’s colorful political views reflect the extreme diversity of the city. Stir in a rich, deep-rooted musical history, a significant selection of art houses and museums, and a generous handful of locally owned and revered restaurants and businesses. Top it off with the picturesque and culturally rich Hill CounThe Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is try that surrounds the city, and you’ve a local favorite that shouldn’t be missed. Check started to create the melting pot that out a show at the IMAX or visit an exhibition is Austin. celebrate_austin_1_10.pdf PM Monday through Saturday 9am-6pm and1/6/10 Sun- 3:18:07
The people of Austin thrive in this self-styled environment. The temperate weather encourages outdoor activity, and the folks make good use of the multiple outlets in which to hike, bike, walk, run, or swim. The art and music scene is a living, breathing thing in Austin, and you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting someone of such persuasion. Hippies and hipsters alike bump elbows with the forces of gentrification without sacrificing their soul. Ask anyone on the street and they’ll tell you – Austin is proud of its eclectic heritage and fiercely protective of its free-thinking, liberal spirit. So where do we end up? Visitors come for the beautiful environment and the interesting tourist attractions. They stick around because of the infectiously positive vibe. And in the end, they get carried away with the thrum of Austin’s lifestyle until finally they realize – they’re not a tourist at all, but instead another piece of what makes Austin unique in the first place.

began almost immediately, and although there were decades of work still left to complete the structure, government in its entirety arrived from Houston in oxcarts in October 1839. Years passed as the population inflated and Austin grew into a bustling capital city. Residents saw the secession of Texas into the Union in 1845, the development of new landmarks including the Governor’s Mansion and the Driskill Hotel, and the foundation laid down for a “university of the first class. Edwin Waller, elected as the city’s first mayor in 1840, engineered a grid plan for the streets of the city, most of which is still in-tact as modern downtown Austin. The original grid designated all northsouth streets to be named after the rivers of Texas (with the one exception being Congress Avenue). All east-west streets were named after trees native to the region, with Pecan Street (now 6th Street) being the major east-west thoroughfare. It wasn’t until 1888 that our beloved state capitol, made of local Texas Sunset Red granite, opened its doors for the first time. The building was lauded as the “7th largest building in the world, larger in square footage than all other state capitols and surpassing the national Capitol in height by 14 feet. In the winter of 1871, Austin acquired

its first connection to the railroad, triggering a decade-long growth spurt. With the railroad came more people, more trade, and more commercial and educational opportunity. Although the original Forty Acres were set aside for would become the University of Texas, it wasn’t until 1882 that construction was started on the university. In the meantime, Austin opened its public school system in 1881 and became host to multiple other universities, including St. Edwards and Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute. Today, Austin is seen, among other things, as the educational center of Texas. As the heavy industrialization of Austin in the late 1800s and early 1900s gave way to more modern times, a new industry took hold: technology. The 1950s saw the first of the city’s think tanks and research labs. Tracor Industries moved to northwest Austin in the 1960s, and many others tagged along, including IBM, Texas Instruments, Samsung, 3M, and Motorola – so many that, in the 1990s, Austin adopted the unofficial nickname of “Silicon Hills. The University of Texas produced many a bright techno-centric mind, including Michael Dell, who established his own Fortune 500 company in the suburbs of Austin. The technology industry continued to be a major influ-

ence into the late 1990s and early 2000s with the dot-com boom and subsequent bust. Although the fall was far, Austin is still seen as a hub in the industry. It was in the 1970s that the city began to truly establish itself as a non-traditional, free-thinking, liberal society. As political parties realigned and strong political leadership established itself, Austin became a blend of downtown liberalism and suburban conservatism, with a heavy dash of libertarianism. A strongly determined and vocal majority brought to the forefront the issue of preserving the natural environment and historical neighborhoods of the area, distinguishing Austin as a place of constant vigilance in the preservation of quality of life. These same political movements continue today: Austin purists clash with development companies as the appearance of downtown changes dramatically, with emphasis being placed on downtown living and development. The 1970s also brought with it a musical revolution. Although it was the jazz and blues clubs that sprung up east of downtown in the 1920s-1940s that established Austin’s musical heritage, it was the country and western musicians who, 30 years later, sought refuge from the corporate overtaking of Nashville and brought the city’s underground music scene to life. These influential musicians found a home in Austin at a time of political and cultural upheaval. Austin became a breeding ground for the alternative music industry, and anti-establishment musicians flocked to the city where they could play to a receptive audience. Not surprisingly, this tradition continues today: Austin has become a city where national acts and struggling musicians alike can come and receive recognition in the form of appreciative audiences. From the beginning, Austin has been a cultural, ethnic, political, and professional melting pot. Germans, Swedes, and Mexicans were prominent settlers in early years, with Mexican immigration growing more prominent in the mid-1900s. Educators and politicians have historically inhabited the city in large numbers, with the additional influx of writers, musicians, artists, business professionals, entrepreneurs, and more adding to the eclectic mix every day. With the population of Austin at least doubling in size every 20 years, it is to be expected that people from all walks of life will come and leave their imprint on the city. Whether it’s the strong economy, the educational, business, or musical opportunity, the lovely environment, or the alternative culture, each has their own reasons for coming. But the overall attraction is the same: Austin is a beautiful place to be.
Did You Know? Fun Facts about Austin! The unofficial slogan “Keep Austin Weird” refers partly to the eclectic and liberal lifestyle of many Austinites, but is also the slogan for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses Mt. Bonnell, at 785 feet, is one of the highest points in the city. Legend has it that the first time a couple climbs the steps, they will fall in love. The second time, they will get engaged. Beware the third time… Congress Avenue houses the largest urban colony of Mexican free-tail bats in North America. Their evacuation of the bridge can be seen every night at sunset between March and October. Austin has been called the “violet crown,” a saying penned by writer O. Henry, because of the wintertime violet glow of color across the hills just after sunset. The Austin Moon Towers were created and built in the 19th Century to shed light on the early downtown streets. Among the most famous artists that migrated to and developed the Austin alternative music scene are Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The Armadillo World Headquarters was the premier place in Austin at the time, where you could see these musicians perform their acts. Both US presidents with affiliations to Austin have an association with the Driskill Hotel: it was the site of Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird’s first date. It was also the site that both Lyndon Johnson and George W. Bush set up office to await the results of their respective elections.

Sixth Street is one of the city of Austin’s most eclectic and famous roads, well-known for its fun, boisterous night life and live music scene. What many people do not know is that Sixth Street is also one of the most historic districts in town and contains a large range of unique retail, restaurant and entertainment venues that are pedestrian friendly during the daytime as well as the nighttime. Before Sixth Street became the bustling urban center that it is now, it was once called Pecan Street, and was the main thoroughfare into town (a nice flat trail) for the farmland communities to the east, and soon became a major commerce district. By the 1860s, log and frame houses, wagon yards, livery stables, and saloons were present along Pecan Street, as were pigs and cows from time to time. What is now modern day Buffalo Billiards was once Missouri House, erected in 1861, and was Austin’s first boarding home for weary travelers on their way to the Wild West. The beautiful Littlefield Building, at the northeast corner of Sixth and Congress, was built in 1910 and displays the beautiful architecture know as Beaux Arts Style. At the time of it’s completion, it was undeniably the most modern and opulent building in the southwest part of the nation. This building was the tallest skyscraper between New Orleans and San Francisco at the time (be sure to ask on the local shop owners about the fun rivalry that added a ninth floor to this impressive building). Located within Littlefield, in modern day Austin, is Hatbox, a haberdashery that combines old world charm with contemporary style, and is well-recognized for being “every man and woman’s” hat store. Right next store is the beloved Wild About Music store, the worlds first and only art and gift gallery dedicated entirely to music. This unique retail treasure represents over 100 locals, national and international artists and carries thousands of items all entirely dedicated to music. No trip to Austin is complete without visiting these locally recommended stores. Within easy walking distance is Lucky Lizards & Museum of the Weird, a beloved Austin favorite that cannot be missed! The museum features mummies, unexplained phenomena, and self-proclaimed “freaks of nature,” as well as a clever curio and gift shop on the street front which carries a large inventory of local artisan’s products as well as unique imported goods and souvenirs. Right across the street is Bobalu Cigar Co., which proudly presents fine boutique cigars made live in the window by real Cuban born cigar rollers. This locally renowned shop also carries a fantastic selection of cases and accessories. Although historical Sixth Street is extraordinarily pedestrian friendly, don’t miss out on your chance to tour Austin in the most fun way possible at Seg(continued on page 21)

On a hot Summer afternoon, don’t forget the opportunity to step inside the crisp air conditioned interior of Alamo Drafthouse, which plays movies in the early afternoon and into the evening, and features continually evolving special events and fun features. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is fun and refreshing, and you’ll be amazed at the authentic and original old movie interior, which was one known as The Ritz. After all this shopping, touring and fun, don’t forget to stop at any of the world famous bars or restaurants that line Sixth Street. Maggie Mae’s Austin has stood proud for over thirty years and is located in a beautifully restored building erected in 1874 and features an authentic New Orleans style courtyard with a staircase that extends to a rooftop that allows for a gorgeous view of downtown Austin. Right across the street is Iron Cactus Restaurant and Margarita Bar, which is located in an enchanting turnof-the-century building which was remodeled as recently as 1995 to maintain the authentic, historical aspects of its construction that make Sixth Street so charming. There are countless hidden treasures along this wonderful corridor that makes up the heart of Austin. Don’t miss the daytime opportunities that abound in the form of shopping, retail and, for the historically inclined, the beautiful monuments that abound from the legendary Driskill Hotel next to the Littlefield Building and on toward IH35.

Kid-Friendly Austin by Carl Mamula
There’s always plenty to do in Austin—for adults and kids alike! Listed below are only a few of the many kidfriendly activity options in the Texas Capitol. For some big-screen fun, why not take your child to the IMAX Theatre at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum? This fully accessible facility has 400 seats and features an IMAX projector on which your kids can watch movies in 2-D and 3-D! Operating independently of the museum, the Theatre is open on evenings and weekends. The IMAX shows movies for the whole family, including educational films such as Hubble 3D. Can’t get enough of the cinema? No worries—On Saturday at the end of each month (and Mondays through Thursdays in the summer), Austin’s famous Alamo Drafthouse Cinema offers a free showing for children and their parents. Known as the Free Kids Club, this event is a great opportunity to watch classic children’s films and unique selections that your kids will love. Want to teach your kids about nature
and science? The Austin Nature & Science Center is tons of fun for children. Take them to see animals such as coyotes and owls, as well as many other examples of Central Texas wildlife—both flora and fauna. And your kids will love digging up fossils in the Dino Pit exhibit, or studying the natural world through microscopes in the Naturalist Workshop. Definitely not an excursion to be missed! The Nature & Science Center also offers programs such as summer adventure camps. Open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 12pm-5pm. For more animal adventures, pay a visit to the Austin Zoo. The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary performs animal rescue and rehabilitation, giving a home to 300 different animals of over 100 species. Originally started as a goat ranch, the Austin Zoo now houses many exotic as well as domestic animals. Come see the big cats, monkeys, reptiles, birds, and more! Open daily from 10am-6pm Feb 1 to Oct 31 and 10am-5:30pm Nov 1 to Jan 31.

Also check out some of the great Austin Parks and pools! One of the most popular is Zilker Park on Barton Springs Road. Zilker Park has 350 acres of all kinds of fun activities. For an admission fee, you can swim in Barton Springs Pool, take a ride on the trolley (known as the Zilker Zephyr), paddle on a canoe, or visit the Umlauf Sculpture Garden. However, Town Lake’s hike and bike trails, the Zilker Botanical Garden, the playground, and a shallower part of Barton Springs are all free, as are the many picnic areas. And don’t forget to come to the Zilker Hillside Theater in the summer to watch free musical productions! Zilker Park is open daily from 5:00am to 10:00pm. In addition, Austin has several kidfriendly events throughout the year, great for the whole family. These include Free Museum Day in September (29 Austin museums open for free!), the Trail of Lights at Zilker Park during Christmas time, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Expo in September, and the Old Pecan Street Festival in spring and fall.

Kid-Friendly Activities to Share With Your Child in Austin, TX
Zilker Park: Austin is home to one of the best metropolitan parks in the state! It contains the Barton Springs Pool, open year round, as well as an enormous playground for toddlers to big kids. There’s a train depot for the Zilker Zephyr, a miniature train that takes a 20 minute tour around the park. There’s also a Hillside Theatre and The Austin Nature and Science Center where your kiddo can practice being a junior archeologist in the dinosaur pit. www.ci.austin.tx.us/zilker/ Austin Zoo: The Austin Zoo is special because many of the animals housed there are rescued. Its manageable size makes it less crowded and a very doable daytime activity. There is a great petting zoo and the enclosures feel much more part of the natural setting rather than generic cages. It is definitely worth the short drive out of town. www.AustinZoo.org Festivals: Austin is famous for its massive music festivals, but there are many kiddo-centered events as well. The Austin Kite Festival, held in Zilker Park, happens every Spring and is truly a site to behold. Every Summer, just as the heat seems to be at its worst, you can find the Ice Cream Festival in Waterloo Park. Also look for the Pecan Street Festival (bi-annual) and Bat Fest, a spectacular even held on the Congress Bridge. Use our Web site to find dates and times of special events. www.celebrateaustin.com Bat Watch: You can’t mention Bat Fest and Congress Bridge without bringing up Bat Watching! The bridge is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America, estimated at 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats. Each night from mid-March to November, the bats emerge from under the bridge at dusk and fill the sky. This event has become one of the most spectacular and unusual tourist attractions in Texas. Watching the bats is so mesmerizing, not only will your chid learn and have fun, but you will feel like a child again as well. Water Play: Austin has lots of fabulous opportunity for fun water activities. Enjoy the beautiful sunshine Austin offers by indulging in a day (or weekend camping trip!) at gorgeous Lake Austin, rent a canoe at the shores of Lady Bird Lake, or discover one of Austin’s beloved pools- like Deep Eddy, Barton Springs, or even Hamilton Pool, just a short drive from town in Drippings Springs, TX.

Achieve desired results without looking ‘done.’

ith innovative technology advancing faster than ever, cosmetic medicine seems to be getting an ongoing facelift. We turned to Dr. Daniel Leeman, board certified facial plastic surgeon and Medical Director at Austin’s NEWU Plastic Surgery, to learn more about the most advanced methods in facial rejuvenation and body contouring.
The New Face of Plastic Surgery Most exciting are the advances in nonsurgical options that provide beautiful results with little to no downtime. Dr. Leeman recently introduced to Austin a breakthrough, non-invasive facial lifting procedure called Ultherapy. “Ultrasound therapy” is the first and only energybased aesthetic procedure cleared by the FDA for a non-invasive lift, and it is revolutionizing the way physicians counteract the effects of time and gravity on the skin. Ultherapy gradually and gently shifts the skin back into a more youthful position, so clients achieve desired results without looking “done.” With just one treatment, the regenerative process is initiated, with the full effect will building subtly over the course of two to three months. Another way Dr. Leeman rejuvenates without the use of his scalpel is by employing fillers that enhance and restore a youthful contour to the face and hands where time and gravity have taken their toll. Fillers can be injected in less than an hour and can help smooth deep facial wrinkles, restore sunken areas beneath the eyes, fill out hollowed cheeks, even out acne scarring, improve chin contour and add volume to the lips. For a more permanent result, Dr. Leeman uses patients’ own fat in place of artificial fillers. Fat is an abundant,

natural source of stem cells, containing 300 times the amount found in bone marrow. Because of their miraculous ability to renew and regenerate, the stem cells found in fat are vital to the latest method to combat the effects of aging. “Synthetic facial fillers like Restylane®, Radiesse® or Sculptra® have historically been able to provide a suitable, albeit temporary, solution to add volume to the face and hands,” said Leeman. “Now, with the help of stem cell-enriched fat from patients’ own bodies, we can do more than volumize – we can actually rejuvenate.” The key to using the stems cells to their maximum potential lies in a harvesting technique that gently removes unwanted fat from the body in an improved way. Employing water-assisted liposuction, Dr. Leeman uses a gentle, pulsating spray of fluid to dislodge fat without the brute force used in traditional liposuction procedures. During the harvesting process, patients enjoy the added benefit of precise contouring of donor areas including the thighs and abdomen. To learn more about Dr. Leeman and the minimally invasive treatments available at NEWU Plastic Surgery, visit www.NEWUplasticsurgery.com.
Worth a Second Look
Get the look you want with or without surgery. Schedule a private consultation and take one step closer to a younger-looking, more confident you.
When you are considering plastic surgery and other rejuvenation treatments, you want a doctor with a reputation for excellence and natural-looking results. As one of the only double board-certified facial plastic surgeons in Austin, Dr. Daniel Leeman brings extra levels of skill and expertise to the complex nuances of facial enhancement. Using an arsenal of cutting-edge medical grade spa treatments and (non)surgical techniques, Dr. Leeman and his can safely and beautifully refresh timeworn features, deliver precise body contouring and renew your self-confidence with minimal downtime. Whether you want to dramatically counteract the effect of time with Ultherapy (non-surgical face lift) or achieve the body you’ve always wanted with our gentle and effective liposuction methods, Dr. Leeman and his team of highly qualified medical aestheticians can help you look and feel your best.

rom cool Japanese steakhouses to fine French bistros, you can enjoy cuisine from around the globe right here in Austin. With hundreds of restaurants in the area, there are eateries to suit every taste. Many restaurants serve special dishes to accommodate even the pickiest of eaters. Even in a land dominated by steakhouses and barbecue joints, vegetarian restaurants are plentiful, and chefs aim to please by concocting flavorful recipes like barbecued tofu and spicy meatless chili for their guests. Home-style cooking in Central Texas may put your mother’s meatloaf to shame. Here you can feast on Southern favorites like chicken fried steak, fluffy mashed potatoes, fresh veggies, warm cornbread, delicious pecan pie, and hearty chili. It would be sinful to leave Texas without indulging in some saucy barbecue. Texans will barbecue just about anything – it doesn’t matter if it’s pork, beef, or chicken; loin, brisket, or breast, we will throw it over an open flame and douse it in delicious thick barbecue sauce. Don’t be afraid to get your fingers dirty; napkins are plentiful and bibs are often provided! Although Texas is best known for its Southern home-style cooking, Austin provides an excellent selection of foreign cuisines. Local chefs prepare tasty dishes from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, the Caribbean, India, South and Central America, and, of course, Mexico. With one of the largest Hispanic and Latino populations in the nation, Central Texas boasts some of the best

authentic Mexican dishes north of the border. In addition to the multitude of fabulous Mexican restaurants around Austin, Tex-Mex is also popular. Favorites like breakfast tacos, chips and salsa, fresh tortillas, burritos, and margaritas are staples in many Austinites’ diets. There is nothing better to wash down a good meal with than a great drink, and the area has of bars, wineries, and breweries where you can do so. In addition to in-town brewpubs, Central Texas hosts the Spoetzle Brewery, located in the tiny town of Shiner. Spoetzle is famous for handcrafting Shiner Bock, a seasonal fullflavored, deep amber-colored beer popular with Austin residents. If you’re in the mood for a good glass of vino, visit the Hill Country, where beautiful rolling hills and abundant sunshine have created a backdrop for some excellent vineyards, and make a great destination for a wine-tasting getaway weekend. Although you may be tempted to enjoy second helpings at dinner, be sure to save room for dessert. Austin has great coffee shops and bakeries, where you can relax on cushy furniture and enjoy a frothy cappuccino and a slice of homemade apple pie. A hot summer night is perfect for socializing with friends at one of the ice cream parlors around town that serve ice cream, frozen yogurt and gelato. Wherever you end the evening, you will return home full and satisfied with your Austin dining experience.

Taste the Culture of Austin Within the walls of the enticing restaurants that line downtown Austin’s historic streets, locals and visitors that come to gather with friends and family will always find something to satisfy their taste buds. Over warm conversation, the sound of clinking utensils and mouth-watering aromas, all are invited to partake of the best of Central Texas’s offerings from enchiladas and chile con queso to barbeque ribs and schnitzel. Leaving with smiles on their faces and full stomachs, patrons can reflect on the deeply rooted history of Texas that has continuously transformed the face of its legendary cuisine “A cuisine evolves with the arrival of new ethnic influences, new foods introduced in the area, even new appliances or newly discovered cooking methods. So, of course Texas food is not the same as it was 100 years ago or even 25 years ago. It’s just the way we eat in Texas today,” said Terry Thompson-Anderson, culinary teacher and author of three cookbooks, among them Texas on the Plate. A Brief History: Indian tribes who first inhabited this state cultivated a diversity of crops and spices that serve as fundamentals in today’s food, such as corn-based dishes with chilies and herbs, usually accompanied by beans and tomatoes. The Spanish, the first Europeans to arrive here, claimed Texas for their mother country in the 16th century and quickly called the Indians their friends. They combined their diet of rice, pork, chicken, wine, garlic and onions with the native indigenous foods of pre-Columbian Mexico, including chocolate, chorizo, tomato, vanilla, avocado, guava, papaya, pineapple, chili peppers, beans, squash, peanut, fish and turkey. With its long ties to its southern neighbor, Mexico, it’s no surprise that Texan food shows strong Mexican influences. The cuisine so closely coincides with Mexico’s food that an entirely new genre of food was created, Tex-Mex, which combines traditional Mexican flavors and techniques with American customs. Most of today’s Mexican food is based on Mayan and Aztec traditions combined with culinary trends introduced by the Spanish colonists. Hispanic foods continue to shape Texas, even in the subtlest of ways. Whether you’re eating chili Frito pie, traditional Texas barbeque, or a classic steak—they are all centered on the strong tradition of vaqueros (cowboys), who herded beef for their supper and used it to make signature dishes. The tradition is carried on into modern day cowboy’s and cowgirl’s standard diet of meat and potatoes. As we all know, “everything is BIGGER in Texas,” and that includes our Texas-sized “pantry.” Grannies and executive chefs alike are easily inspired. With such an array of ever-evolving ethnic influences to pull from, cooks in the Lone Star State can always please a crowd.

Fine Dining in the Capital City by Christy Wink
A
ustin has long been known for its eclectic offering of dining destinations, ranging from the expected (Tex-Mex, BBQ – some of the best in the world!) to the more worldly or even completely unexpected (ever been served a humongous cupcake out of a 1960’s Airstream?). One perk of grubbing in this wickedly weird city is the privilege of dressing to suit your own style when hitting the town. Going casual is an unspoken rule in Austin, and to dress down is to look like a local. One of the rare occasions in which an Austinite trades in the cargos for a pair of slacks is the opportunity to sit down at one of the city’s many fine dining establishments. It might not be the first thing you think of when visiting this fair city, but make no mistake that Austin has become a culinary epicenter for prestigious up-and-coming chefs and both nationally known and self-proclaimed foodies. From succulent, tender Texas beef to fresh seafood flown in from the Gulf and beyond to delicate, handmade pastas, Austin has a world of haute cuisine at its fingertips to satisfy even the most discriminating gastronome. As is expected in a city so dependent on its local businesses, the number of family- and privately owned upscale restaurants at least equal the number of the finer chain establishments. So at least once while you’re here, be a gourmand. Step out of your sneakers and into some exceptional cuisine.

Fun Fine Dining Tips Cutlery Confusion: Always remember to work from the outside in; the cutlery farthest away from your plate is for the first course and so on. Napkin Knowledge: If you leave the table during the dinner, place your napkin on your chair. If your napkin drops to the floor, it is acceptable for you to pick it up. When you have finished eating, the napkin should be placed tidily to the left side of your plate (but not on your plate). Getting Started: You must not start eating until everyone has been served. Do not salt your meal before you have tasted it; it is an insult to your chef. Small pre-dinner snacks must always touch your plate before being put in the mouth.
For truly remarkable steaks served with a generous helping of Austin attitude, visit Austin Land and Cattle Company. Serving great steaks and good friends for 15 years. 512- 472-1813 Open daily at 5:30
Proper Bread: You should not put the bread on your plate directly- use the small bread plate or place directly on the table. Bread should never be cut. When you wish to eat it, tear a bite sized piece off with your fingers S T E A K S

the music will touch your visit in some form or fashion while you’re here. Austin’s inherited namesake is supremely invoked during any one of its yearly music festivals, including South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, and Fun Fun Fun. Lasting anywhere from a couple of days to an entire week, thousands of music makers and lovers alike flock to the streets of downtown for nonstop aural stimulation and other forms of revelry. The excitement often lasts long into the night, spilling over into the numerous bars, clubs and lounges of Austin in the form of after-parties and impromptu jam sessions.
The best aspect of Austin nightlife is that there is always something happening. In any given night you can find a wide variety of energetic live music shows, bumping night clubs and cool cocktail lounges. The most popular is Sixth Street where venues range from cozy pubs to raucous dance clubs, music from raw alternative rock to sweet, soulful blues. Want to hang like a local? Head over to the Red River district to hear the best indie band you’ve never heard of. For a slightly slower paced, more sophisticated environment, head a couple of blocks over to the Warehouse District. Spanning along Fourth Street from Guadalupe to Congress, you’ll

f there’s one thing that Austin is known for, it’s got to be the nightlife! Wander the streets of downtown during the day, and you will likely encounter bands unloading equipment for a gig or rehearsing in garages cubbied between old stone buildings. As the evenings descend, the city comes alive and the music takes over, buoying its inhabitants on sweet guitar riffs. Imbued as it is in Austin’s history, music leaves an indelible mark on today’s culture – one that bleeds into the streets of the city and hearts of the people. Austin’s great musical heritage is not a tale told by museum portraits or untouchable artifacts. It lives in the landmark performance venues that gave the city and the musicians a name; it haunts the nighttime establishments packed throughout downtown. From legendary artists like Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughan who got their start back in the early Austin scene, to relatively new or up-and-coming musicians, the spirit of music is a continuous presence in all aspects of life here. It is this deep dedication that has gained Austin the worthy title of “Live Music Capital of the World.” Chances are, if you aren’t in town for business, your trip has something to do with one of our famous music festivals. If not, you can be fairly certain that

ustin is known for its super friendly vibe, as well as a rich music scene which officially earned the title “Live Music Capital of the World” in 1991 due to having the highest number of music venues per capita in the nation. This trend began as early as 1933 with the opening of Threadgill’s, a home style cooking restaurant that also served as a music venue and went on to host musicians such as Janis Joplin. Today, at the Lamar St. Threadgill’s location, there is a room dedicated to her, with photos and various memorabilia hanging on the walls. During the 1940’s, music venues appeared which featured big bands, jazz and blues. Some musicians who graced Austin’s presence during this time were Tina Turner, Ike Turner and B.B. King. Willie Nelson livened up the
country music scene in the late 1960’s and 1970’s which led to more liberal musicians landing in Austin such as Roky Erickson with the 13th Floor Elevators, who helped to bring in the psychedelic era. In 1970, the Armadillo World Headquarters opened and for more than a decade featured music from all genres, including local ballet, blues and jazz. The punk/new wave era made its way to Austin in the late 1970’s with bands such as The Skunks, the Violators and the Big Boys. It was said that the Skunks helped to put Austin on the rock n’ roll map. The Armadillo went on to host bands such as the Police, Blondie, Talking Heads and Joe Jackson. The blues club Antone’s was opened by Clifford Antone in 1975 and became one of the first music venues on 6th Street, assisting in launching the career of many musicians, including Austinite Stevie Ray Vaughan who won a Grammy in 1990 for best contemporary blues album. Sadly, Stevie tragically died in a helicopter crash in August of the same year. He was memorialized with a statue on the south side of Town Lake. Throughout the years, Austin earned a reputation as a place for struggling musicians to be welcomed by receptive audiences. South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) has been going strong since 1987. The event is held annually in March and is recognized internationally. It was created to bring a wide (continued on page 62)

variety of talent together from all over the world in an effort to develop careers and share ideas. In 1994, a film and interactive component was added to accommodate these growing industries. Austin is the perfect location for this event with its eclectic and open environment. Another music festival which is held at Zilker Park in the fall is Austin City Limits. In addition to food and art, ACL includes over 130 live bands from all over the world to play rock, folk, indie, country, electronic and more over a three day period on eight stages. Over 70,000 fans attend each day. In addition to the outstanding music, there is a great food selection including awesome burgers, incredible pizza, burritos, tasty BBQ and more as well as an art market displaying various crafts and merchandise from Austin’s creative community. The festival is family friendly and children aged ten and under are allowed in for free with a ticket paying adult. ACL will be celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2011. Ticket sales benefit the Austin Parks Foundation, which assists in improving parks throughout Austin. Music is a way of life in Austin as it is home to approximately 8,000 professional musicians and contributes $1 billion dollars to the economy. A show can be seen almost every night of the week and is the perfect way to unwind after a hectic day. Weekends in Austin thrive on culture and fun with music flowing through every activity. SXSW offers amazing opportunities to see new talent in the spring, and ACL follows through with an incredible line-up each year in the fall. Regardless of personal taste in music, Austin’s unique combination of talent, energy and good feeling vibes guarantee a little something for everyone, served with a smile.

ounded in 1887 by General Adam R. Johnson, Marble Falls is located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country on the Colorado River. Before the dam was built to form Lake Marble Falls, water cascaded over 20-foot ledges which resembled marble, providing a name for the new city. The falls are now underwater and only vis-

ible on those rare occasions when the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) lowers the lake for repairs to the dam and boat docks. The first city officials were elected in 1907 when a mayor-alderman form of government was instituted. In 1917, Ophelia “Birdie” Crosby Harwood was elected mayor - thus becoming the first woman mayor in the United States to be
elected by an all male electorate. However, it was the 866-foot stone monolith called Granite Mountain looming on the town’s western edge that secured Marble Falls’ place in Texas history. It was here that the famed “Texas Pink” granite was quarried to construct the Texas State Capitol Building in Austin. The stone was a donation from progressive area citizens in exchange for a rail connection with Austin. The Austin and Northwestern Railroad built an extension to Marble Falls from Granite Mountain in 1889, and a post office was also established that year. Granite Mountain is still actively quarried, and a variety of granite products are shipped all over the world. Today, it is the natural setting of lakes and hills that makes the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ area one of the most attractive and popular tourist and retirement destinations in all of Texas. When exploring Marble Falls, do not miss these amazing sites: The Marble Falls Depot, Granite Mountain, Governor O.M. Roberts home, Hills of Home Memorial, Otto Ebeling House, Christian-Matern House, The Roper House, the old Post Office Building, Liberty Hall, Hardin-Ussery House, Brandt Badger House, the
