began almost immediately, and although there were decades of work still left to complete the structure, government in its entirety arrived from Houston in oxcarts in October 1839. Years passed as the population inflated and Austin grew into a bustling capital city. Residents saw the secession of Texas into the Union in 1845, the development of new landmarks including the Governorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mansion and the Driskill Hotel, and the foundation laid down for a â&#x20AC;&#x153;university of the first class.â&#x20AC;? Edwin Waller, elected as the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first mayor in 1840, engineered a grid plan for the streets of the city, most of which is still in-tact as modern downtown Austin. The original grid designated all northsouth streets to be named after the rivers of Texas (with the one exception being Congress Avenue). All east-west streets were named after trees native to the region, with Pecan Street (now 6th Street) being the major east-west thoroughfare. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until 1888 that our beloved state capitol, made of local Texas Sunset Red granite, opened its doors for the first time. The building was lauded as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;7th largest building in the world,â&#x20AC;? larger in square footage than all other state capitols and surpassing the national Capitol in height by 14 feet. In the winter of 1871, Austin acquired

its first connection to the railroad, triggering a decade-long growth spurt. With the railroad came more people, more trade, and more commercial and educational opportunity. Although the original Forty Acres were set aside for would become the University of Texas, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until 1882 that construction was started on the university. In the meantime, Austin opened its public school system in 1881 and became host to multiple other universities, including St. Edwards and Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute. Today, Austin is seen, among other things, as the educational center of Texas. As the heavy industrialization of Austin in the late 1800s and early 1900s gave way to more modern times, a new industry took hold: technology. The 1950s saw the first of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s think tanks and research labs. Tracor Industries moved to northwest Austin in the 1960s, and many others tagged along, including IBM, Texas Instruments, Samsung, 3M, and Motorola â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so many that, in the 1990s, Austin adopted the unofficial nickname of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Silicon Hills.â&#x20AC;? The University of Texas produced many a bright techno-centric mind, including Michael Dell, who established his own Fortune 500 company in the suburbs of Austin. The technology industry continued to be a major influ-

ence into the late 1990s and early 2000s with the dot-com boom and subsequent bust. Although the fall was far, Austin is still seen as a hub in the industry. It was in the 1970s that the city began to truly establish itself as a non-traditional, free-thinking, liberal society. As political parties realigned and strong political leadership established itself, Austin became a blend of downtown liberalism and suburban conservatism, with a heavy dash of libertarianism. A strongly determined and vocal majority brought to the forefront the issue of preserving the natural environment and historical neighborhoods of the area, distinguishing Austin as a place of constant vigilance in the preservation of quality of life. These same political movements continue today: Austin purists clash with development companies as the appearance of downtown changes dramatically, with emphasis being placed on downtown living and development. The 1970s also brought with it a musical revolution. Although it was the jazz and blues clubs that sprung up east of downtown in the 1920s-1940s that established Austin’s musical heritage, it was the country and western musicians who, 30 years later, sought refuge from the corporate overtaking of Nashville and brought the city’s underground music scene to life. These influential musicians found a home in Austin at a time of political and cultural upheaval. Austin became a breeding ground for the alternative music industry, and anti-establishment musicians flocked to the city where they could play to a receptive audience. Not surprisingly, this tradition continues today: Austin has become a city where national acts and struggling musicians alike can come and receive recognition in the form of appreciative audiences. From the beginning, Austin has been a cultural, ethnic, political, and professional melting pot. Germans, Swedes, and Mexicans were prominent settlers in early years, with Mexican immigration growing more prominent in the mid-1900s. Educators and politicians have historically inhabited the city in large numbers, with the additional influx of writers, musicians, artists, business professionals, entrepreneurs, and more adding to the eclectic mix every day. With the population of Austin at least doubling in size every 20 years, it is to be expected that people from all walks of life will come and leave their imprint on the city. Whether it’s the strong economy, the educational, business, or musical opportunity, the lovely environment, or the alternative culture, each has their own reasons for coming. But the overall attraction is the same: Austin is a beautiful place to be.

Did You Know? Fun Facts about Austin! The unofficial slogan “Keep Austin Weird” refers partly to the eclectic and liberal lifestyle of many Austinites, but is also the slogan for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses Mt. Bonnell, at 785 feet, is one of the highest points in the city. Legend has it that the first time a couple climbs the steps, they will fall in love. The second time, they will get engaged. Beware the third time… Congress Avenue houses the largest urban colony of Mexican free-tail bats in North America. Their evacuation of the bridge can be seen every night at sunset between March and October. Austin has been called the “violet crown,” a saying penned by writer O. Henry, because of the wintertime violet glow of color across the hills just after sunset. The Austin Moon Towers were created and built in the 19th Century to shed light on the early downtown streets. Among the most famous artists that migrated to and developed the Austin alternative music scene are Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The Armadillo World Headquarters was the premier place in Austin at the time, where you could see these musicians perform their acts. Both US presidents with affiliations to Austin have an association with the Driskill Hotel: it was the site of Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird’s first date. It was also the site that both Lyndon Johnson and George W. Bush set up office to await the results of their respective elections.

Sixth Street is one of the city of Austin’s most eclectic and famous roads, well-known for its fun, boisterous night life and live music scene. What many people do not know is that Sixth Street is also one of the most historic districts in town and contains a large range of unique retail, restaurant and entertainment venues that are pedestrian friendly during the daytime as well as the nighttime. Before Sixth Street became the bustling urban center that it is now, it was once called Pecan Street, and was the main thoroughfare into town (a nice flat trail) for the farmland communities to the east, and soon became a major commerce district. By the 1860s, log and frame houses, wagon yards, livery stables, and saloons were present along Pecan Street, as were pigs and cows from time to time. What is now modern day Buffalo Billiards was once Missouri House, erected in 1861, and was Austin’s first boarding home for weary travelers on their way to the Wild West. The beautiful Littlefield Building, at the northeast corner of Sixth and Congress, was built in 1910 and displays the beautiful architecture know as Beaux Arts Style. At the time of it’s completion, it was undeniably the most modern and opulent building in the southwest part of the nation. This building was the tallest skyscraper between New Orleans and San Francisco at the time (be sure to ask on the local shop owners about the fun rivalry that added a ninth floor to this impressive building). Located within Littlefield, in modern day Austin, is Hatbox, a haberdashery that combines old world charm with contemporary style, and is well-recognized for being “every man and woman’s” hat store. Right next store is the beloved Wild About Music store, the worlds first and only art and gift gallery dedicated entirely to music. This unique retail treasure represents over 100 locals, national and international artists and carries thousands of items all entirely dedicated to music. No trip to Austin is complete without visiting these locally recommended stores. Within easy walking distance is Lucky Lizards & Museum of the Weird, a beloved Austin favorite that cannot be missed! The museum features mummies, unexplained phenomena, and self-proclaimed “freaks of nature,” as well as a clever curio and gift shop on the street front which carries a large inventory of local artisan’s products as well as unique imported goods and souvenirs. There’s always plenty to do in Austin—for adults and kids alike! Listed below are only a few of the many kidfriendly activity options in the Texas Capitol. For some big-screen fun, why not take your child to the IMAX Theatre at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum? This fully accessible facility has 400 seats and features an IMAX projector on which your kids can watch movies in 2-D and 3-D! Operating independently of the museum, the Theatre is open on evenings and weekends. The IMAX shows movies for the whole family, including educational films such as Hubble 3D. Can’t get enough of the cinema? No worries—On Saturday at the end of each month (and Mondays through Thursdays in the summer), Austin’s famous Alamo Drafthouse Cinema offers a free showing for children and their parents. Known as the Free Kids Club, this event is a great opportunity to watch classic children’s films and unique selections that your kids will love. Want to teach your kids about nature

and science? The Austin Nature & Science Center is tons of fun for children. Take them to see animals such as coyotes and owls, as well as many other examples of Central Texas wildlife—both flora and fauna. And your kids will love digging up fossils in the Dino Pit exhibit, or studying the natural world through microscopes in the Naturalist Workshop. Definitely not an excursion to be missed! The Nature & Science Center also offers programs such as summer adventure camps. Open Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 12pm-5pm. For more animal adventures, pay a visit to the Austin Zoo. The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary performs animal rescue and rehabilitation, giving a home to 300 different animals of over 100 species. Also check out some of the great Austin Parks and pools! One of the most popular is Zilker Park on Barton Springs Road. Zilker Park has 350 acres of all kinds of fun activities. For an admission fee, you can swim in Barton Springs Pool, take a ride on the trolley (known as the Zilker Zephyr), paddle on a canoe, or visit the Umlauf Sculpture Garden. However, Town Lake’s hike and bike trails, the Zilker Botanical Garden, the playground, and a shallower part of Barton Springs are all free, as are the many picnic areas. And don’t forget to come to the Zilker Hillside Theater in the summer to watch free musical productions! Zilker Park is open daily from 5:00am to 10:00pm. In addition, Austin has several kidfriendly events throughout the year, great for the whole family. Leaving with smiles on their faces and full stomachs, patrons can reflect on the deeply rooted history of Texas that has continuously transformed the face of its legendary cuisine “A cuisine evolves with the arrival of new ethnic influences, new foods introduced in the area, even new appliances or newly discovered cooking methods. So, of course Texas food is not the same as it was 100 years ago or even 25 years ago. It’s just the way we eat in Texas today,” said Terry Thompson-Anderson, culinary teacher and author of three cookbooks, among them Texas on the Plate. A Brief History: Indian tribes who first inhabited this state cultivated a diversity of crops and spices that serve as fundamentals in today’s food, such as corn-based dishes with chilies and herbs, usually accompanied by beans and tomatoes. The Spanish, the first Europeans to arrive here, claimed Texas for their mother country in the 16th century and quickly called the Indians their friends. They combined their diet of rice, pork, chicken, wine, garlic and onions with the native indigenous foods of pre-Columbian Mexico, including chocolate, chorizo, tomato, vanilla, avocado, guava, papaya, pineapple, chili peppers, beans, squash, peanut, fish and turkey. With its long ties to its southern neighbor, Mexico, it’s no surprise that Texan food shows strong Mexican influences. The cuisine so closely coincides with Mexico’s food that an entirely new genre of food was created, Tex-Mex, which combines traditional Mexican flavors and techniques with American customs. Most of today’s Mexican food is based on Mayan and Aztec traditions combined with culinary trends introduced by the Spanish colonists. Hispanic foods continue to shape Texas, even in the subtlest of ways. Whether you’re eating chili Frito pie, traditional Texas barbeque, or a classic steak—they are all centered on the strong tradition of vaqueros (cowboys), who herded beef for their supper and used it to make signature dishes. The tradition is carried on into modern day cowboy’s and cowgirl’s standard diet of meat and potatoes. As we all know, “everything is BIGGER in Texas,” and that includes our Texas-sized “pantry.” Grannies and executive chefs alike are easily inspired. With such an array of ever-evolving ethnic influences to pull from, cooks in the Lone Star State can always please a crowd.

ustin has long been known for its eclectic offering of dining destinations, ranging from the expected (Tex-Mex, BBQ – some of the best in the world!) to the more worldly or even completely unexpected (ever been served a humongous cupcake out of a 1960’s Airstream?). One perk of grubbing in this wickedly weird city is the privilege of dressing to suit your own style when hitting the town. Going casual is an unspoken rule in Austin, and to dress down is to look like a local. One of the rare occasions in which an Austinite trades in the cargos for a pair of slacks is the opportunity to sit down at one of the city’s many fine dining establishments. It might not be the first thing you think of when visiting this fair city, but make no mistake that Austin has become a culinary epicenter for prestigious up-and-coming chefs and both nationally known and self-proclaimed foodies. From succulent, tender Texas beef to fresh seafood flown in from the Gulf and beyond to delicate, handmade pastas, Austin has a world of haute cuisine at its fingertips to satisfy even the most discriminating gastronome. As is expected in a city so dependent on its local businesses, the number of family- and privately owned upscale restaurants at least equal the number of the finer chain establishments. Fun Fine Dining Tips Cutlery Confusion: Always remember to work from the outside in; the cutlery farthest away from your plate is for the first course and so on. Austin’s inherited namesake is supremely invoked during any one of its yearly music festivals, including South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, and Fun Fun Fun. Lasting anywhere from a couple of days to an entire week, thousands of music makers and lovers alike flock to the streets of downtown for nonstop aural stimulation and other forms of revelry. The excitement often lasts long into the night, spilling over into the numerous bars, clubs and lounges of Austin in the form of after-parties and impromptu jam sessions.

The best aspect of Austin nightlife is that there is always something happening. In any given night you can find a wide variety of energetic live music shows, bumping night clubs and cool cocktail lounges. The most popular is Sixth Street where venues range from cozy pubs to raucous dance clubs, music from raw alternative rock to sweet, soulful blues. Want to hang like a local? Head over to the Red River district to hear the best indie band you’ve never heard of. Wander the streets of downtown during the day, and you will likely encounter bands unloading equipment for a gig or rehearsing in garages cubbied between old stone buildings. As the evenings descend, the city comes alive and the music takes over, buoying its inhabitants on sweet guitar riffs. Imbued as it is in Austin’s history, music leaves an indelible mark on today’s culture – one that bleeds into the streets of the city and hearts of the people. Austin’s great musical heritage is not a tale told by museum portraits or untouchable artifacts. It lives in the landmark performance venues that gave the city and the musicians a name; it haunts the nighttime establishments packed throughout downtown. From legendary artists like Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, and Stevie Ray Vaughan who got their start back in the early Austin scene, to relatively new or up-and-coming musicians, the spirit of music is a continuous presence in all aspects of life here. It is this deep dedication that has gained Austin the worthy title of “Live Music Capital of the World.” Chances are, if you aren’t in town for business, your trip has something to do with one of our famous music festivals. Every year, thousands of tourists visit Austin for the ACL Music Festival. The three day, multiple stage event showcases over 100 bands. Story by Ameena Shurdom

ustin is known for its super friendly vibe, as well as a rich music scene which officially earned the title “Live Music Capital of the World” in 1991 due to having the highest number of music venues per capita in the nation. This trend began as early as 1933 with the opening of Threadgill’s, a home style cooking restaurant that also served as a music venue and went on to host musicians such as Janis Joplin. Today, at the Lamar St. Threadgill’s location, there is a room dedicated to her, with photos and various memorabilia hanging on the walls. During the 1940’s, music venues appeared which featured big bands, jazz and blues. Some musicians who graced Austin’s presence during this time were Tina Turner, Ike Turner and B.B. King. Willie Nelson livened up the

country music scene in the late 1960’s and 1970’s which led to more liberal musicians landing in Austin such as Roky Erickson with the 13th Floor Elevators, who helped to bring in the psychedelic era. In 1970, the Armadillo World Headquarters opened and for more than a decade featured music from all genres, including local ballet, blues and jazz. The punk/new wave era made its way to Austin in the late 1970’s with bands such as The Skunks, the Violators and the Big Boys. It was said that the Skunks helped to put Austin on the rock n’ roll map. The Armadillo went on to host bands such as the Police, Blondie, Talking Heads and Joe Jackson. The blues club Antone’s was opened by Clifford Antone in 1975 and became one of the first music venues on 6th Street, assisting in launching the career of many musicians, including Austinite Stevie Ray Vaughan who won a Grammy in 1990 for best contemporary blues album. Sadly, Stevie tragically died in a helicopter crash in August of the same year. He was memorialized with a statue on the south side of Town Lake. Throughout the years, Austin earned a reputation as a place for struggling musicians to be welcomed by receptive audiences. South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) has been going strong since 1987. The event is held annually in March and is recognized internationally. It was created to bring a wide (continued on page 62)

variety of talent together from all over the world in an effort to develop careers and share ideas. In 1994, a film and interactive component was added to accommodate these growing industries. Austin is the perfect location for this event with its eclectic and open environment. Another music festival which is held at Zilker Park in the fall is Austin City Limits. In addition to food and art, ACL includes over 130 live bands from all over the world to play rock, folk, indie, country, electronic and more over a three day period on eight stages. Over 70,000 fans attend each day. In addition to the outstanding music, there is a great food selection including awesome burgers, incredible pizza, burritos, tasty BBQ and more as well as an art market displaying various crafts and merchandise from Austin’s creative community. The festival is family friendly and children aged ten and under are allowed in for free with a ticket paying adult. ACL will be celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2011. Ticket sales benefit the Austin Parks Foundation, which assists in improving parks throughout Austin. Music is a way of life in Austin as it is home to approximately 8,000 professional musicians and contributes $1 billion dollars to the economy. A show can be seen almost every night of the week and is the perfect way to unwind after a hectic day. Weekends in Austin thrive on culture and fun with music flowing through every activity. SXSW offers amazing opportunities to see new talent in the spring, and ACL follows through with an incredible line-up each year in the fall. ible on those rare occasions when the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) lowers the lake for repairs to the dam and boat docks. The first city officials were elected in 1907 when a mayor-alderman form of government was instituted. In 1917, Ophelia “Birdie” Crosby Harwood was elected mayor - thus becoming the first woman mayor in the United States to be

elected by an all male electorate. However, it was the 866-foot stone monolith called Granite Mountain looming on the town’s western edge that secured Marble Falls’ place in Texas history. It was here that the famed “Texas Pink” granite was quarried to construct the Texas State Capitol Building in Austin. The stone was a donation from progressive area citizens in exchange for a rail connection with Austin. The Austin and Northwestern Railroad built an extension to Marble Falls from Granite Mountain in 1889, and a post office was also established that year. Granite Mountain is still actively quarried, and a variety of granite products are shipped all over the world. Today, it is the natural setting of lakes and hills that makes the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ area one of the most attractive and popular tourist and retirement destinations in all of Texas. Enjoy the crystal clear San Marcos River at Rio Vista Falls Park. Shaded by giant Cypress trees and a refreshing 72 degrees year-round, the crystal clear San Marcos River is the perfect place to jump in and cool off. Rio Vista Falls is three amazingly fun drop-offs of

easy, whitewater rapids. Rent a tube or kayak to take a run through it or just float about in the deep-water pools that precede it. Bring your bike. Bring your backpack. Bring your binoculars. Explore expanded hiking and biking trails along our scenic parks and natural areas. Choose from half-mile ADA accessible trails with information kiosks and benches that are perfect for beginners, to miles-long natural trails to satisfy those looking for a little more adventure. The in-town trail locations make them a perfect greenspace when you need your nature fix. Go deep underground and see up close the devastation of a major quake at Wonder World Park. Unlike most caves, Wonder World is a dry-formed cave where touching the walls is not only allowed but encouraged. Exit by the “Stratavator” and ride high into the sky to the Tejas Observation Tower. Be amazed by the topsy-turvy world of the Anti-Gravity House where everything is backwards, even water flows up hill! Board the

train and splash through the waterfalls of Mystery Mountain on your way to the Texas Wildlife Petting Park. The Texas Hill Country is a beauty to behold in Dripping Springs, Texas, where Onion Creek makes its way through the edge of town and into Wimberley, Texas. Just twentyone quick and pretty miles west of Austin, it’s a hidden gem in our own backyard. The small city is a quaint destination for shoppers who crave some Hill Country inspired art and to take in the breathtaking vista. Perhaps one of its most popular features is lush Hamilton Pool (featured above), a swimming hole found just upstream from its confluence with the Pedernales River, where Hamilton Creek spills over the limestone edge, creating a fifty-foot waterfall in which to play. It can be found at 24300 Hamilton Pool Road and is a fun day trip destination. Be sure to get there early- “seating” is limited!
