Lacey Schuckman UNLESHES HER INNER WAR MACINE AND ONCE AGAIN TRIUMPHS !
INTERVIEW:
Lacey, we want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to complete our interview,
we know our readers and your fans have many questions they would like to ask you and hopefully we will hit on a few of those questions here ! ( Q ) How old were you when you decided to get involved in MMA and what or who inspired you ? ( A ) I started training when I was 15. My husband started me in traditional martial arts and wrestling then and is still my head coach today! ( Q ) What is your current training schedule ? ( A ) I train anywhere from 36-40 hours per week. That includes Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Strength & Conditioning as well as personal training and kids classes. I wake up have an a.m class, then do S & C, nap, then have a p.m class and then I usually do my road work. ( Q ) The recent fight you had with DARLA HARRIS which we have featured, was there any one moment that stands out in the fight, other than your victory ? ( A ) Oh yeah the super tight armbar she had me with in rd. 1. She had me very nervous for a moment! ;-) I knew once I stepped over I was safe but all I can say is my elbow hurt for a week! ( Q ) Will you be offering her a re-match in the future ? ( A ) If she would like one, I would definately be game, she is a warrior in my mind!!! ( Q ) Out of the women in your weight division, is their anyone in-particular that you would like a match with ? ( A ) No, I am a newby to the atomweights, I am just taking them as they come. There are some seriously talented girls in this division so I am in no rush, just trying to find my footing! ( Q ) How many matches have you had throughout your career up to this point ? ( A ) In total with amateur mma, muay thai, pro mma and boxing I have had 27 total matches. ( Q ) Who would you say was your toughest opponent so far ? ( A ) I would say Ayaka Hamasaki. She complety handled me for 3 rounds. I learned so much from that match and have really stepped up certain aspects to my training. I believe she will go far at flyweight! ( Q ) What titles do you currently hold ? ( A ) I am the current Rocky Mountain Bad Boyz 110lbs. Professional Women's MMA Title Holder as well as The Ring of Fire 125lbs. Young Gunz Champion ( Q ) Being that you and your husband both are engaged in MMA and are both great warriors, how often do you hit the mat together ? ( A )Everyday! He is not only my head coach but one of my main sparring partners. We both walk at a very similar weight so it works great! Being my husband, he has no mercy so I feel I get pushed just as hard as my male counterparts.
( Q ) Outside of training, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time ? ( A )I love bowling! My Mom bought Randall and I Bowling balls and shoes for Christmas and we love doing it! I average about 150 but my goal is to be a 200 averager! ( Q ) What is your all time favorite dish ? ( A )I love sushi! Any type of roll!!! I also love fresh Octopus and Smoked Salmon! ( Q ) Do you have any up coming matches and if so with who and where will it be held ? ( A )I will be competing June 8th for Beyond Thunderdome Cage Fights at City Hall in Denver, Co. Opponent is currently in the works. ( Q ) Could you share some encouraging words for women who want to get involved in women’s MMA "? ( A )Believe in yourself, Martial Arts will give you more confidence and self awarness then anything in the world. Don't quit because it gets hard, push back and give it all you have, no matter what, you will come out a better, stronger person then when you started! ( Q ) As a warrior we all live by a certain code, could you tell us the code you live your life by ? ( A ) Honor, Loyalty, and Respect! There are no excuses in life to not strive to be 1% better everyday in everything you do! PERSONAL TESTIMONY Cleopatra Sorina Iliescu Hello, I met you on Saturday at the Global Humanitarian Summit. My name is Sorina, I am from Romania, and I shared with you that I have studied 12 years Shotokan. You mentioned that you will start breathing classes next Saturday. I want to keep in touch to make sure I will make it. Thank you very much for bringing awareness to the world. Sincerely, Sorina
I would like to start off by thanking Grandmaster Anthony Elam and the ATTU for putting me on the cover of the March, 2013 issue. It is a great honor to be on this cover, as there are many great Martial Artist and other talents out in the World, and many belong to the ATTU. My article for this month delves into the internal system of Baguazhang and also Wing Chun Kung Fu. Both systems are highly efficient as far as economy of motion and attacking the opponent from all angles.Baguazhang is a system of continuous movement using circular motion, as the basic beginning practice of Baguazhang entails walking in a circle. As you learn the art of Baguazhang you must cultivate the Chi in your body by practicing Chi breathing while walking around the circle. When walking the circle concentrate on your Dan Tian area, and circulate the Chi energy from this point. This cultivation of energy will strengthen your internal organs, and also develop internal strength for Martial Art applications when needed. Walking the circle also strengthens the legs and develops great rooting power. There are many benefits to learning Baguazhang, and I feel like the most important ones are the cultivation of energy for both your Martial Art and the health orientation it develops. My other system I would like to speak about is Wing Chun Kung Fu, and it also is a system where Chi energy breathing can be practiced while learning the system. It takes many years of hard practice to master Wing Chun, and as you progress your speed and power become lightning fast. It is almost unbelieveable how much power you can develop in what is known as the one inch punch, which Wing Chun is so famous for. It is not uncommon after many years of practice to be able to punch up to 6 times per second. This type of speed is also developed by practicing on the Wing Chun Wooden Dummy, along with rapid fire punching practice and the forms of Wing Chun. Wing Chun is a highly effective Martial Art and has devastating power. The goal of any Martial Artist is to be able to finish an altercation as quickly as possible, and just one punch from Wing Chun using Chi energy can accomplish this. They say in China that if Chi Energy is used in your punch, that your punch is 8 times the strength of a normal human being. I would like to finish my article by saying that if you can find a good teacher who can explain how Chi energy works, then this is the path to better health and cultivation of the Martial Art you have chosen. Best of luck to everyone and see you next time. Best Wishes, Sifu Steve Kraselsky
My story on how I discovered I could perform chi healing on people began five years ago after my Wife, Elizabeth had been diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer. The cancer had spread in her lymph nodes under her left arm, and shortly after the removal of the lymph nodes under her arm Elizabeth developed swelling in her left hand .The swelling was so bad that her veins disappeared and also created severe pain in her hand. I had been practicing Qigong for the past 29 years and using it for Martial Arts only, and I decided to see if I could perform Chi Healing on my wife’s hand to help her. I waved my hand over her hand for approximately two minutes and emitted Chi from my hand without touching her, and the swelling disappeared and the pain vanished. We were both amazed that energy could heal someone like this so fast, and thus my journey began in the art of Chi Healing. I had cultivated Chi to a point that the motion I used over her hand pulled the swelling and pain from her. Over the next five years I continued to teach Qigong and did not engage in Chi Healing on anyone. I have been in the Insurance business for 28 years, and I was running into a lot of customers with carpel tunnel and arthritis .About 10 months ago I decided to perform Chi Healing on some of my customers .I just waved my hand over the area without touching them and transmitted Chi Energy, and the swelling and pain disappeared within 2 minutes just like my Wife’s hand. After performing Chi Healing on a few customers I wanted to help anyone in pain, and I started doing Chi healing on the street. I was doing Chi Healing on a daily basis now, and as of January,2013 I have performed up to 700 healings and I want everyone to know that I have never charged for doing Chi healing .I have been told it is part gift and part energy by my friend Master Shawn Liu ,a 32 generation Shaolin Monk who now lives here in Atlanta, Georgia. He told me it is very rare to see someone my age able to heal people in this manner. His teacher at Shaolin Temple could heal people but in a different manner. I am currently getting ready to start working with two Chiropractic firms in Atlanta, Georgia and will be doing Chi Healing on the patient’s that cannot be relieved of pain by Chiropractic work. Also I have a program that I teach that prevents the pain from possibly coming back in some cases, which entails Chi Breathing ,Tai Chi exercises for health, the Six Daoist sounds to strengthen the organs, and Baguazhang’s 8 serving tea exercises to develop integrated and coordinated strength. Recently I was introduced to a young lady who was clinically paralyzed from the waist down from a skiing accident two years ago. I was introduced to her by a radio show host who was a friend of her’s and her husband .Her name is Betty and she was only able to walk with steel leg braces and two walking canes. Betty’s spine was severed and this was the cause of her paralysis. I told Betty I was going to perform Chi healing over her lower spine, front legs, and feet. After waving my hand over these areas for about five minutes without touching her, Betty told her husband that she could feel tingling in her legs, and this is the first time she had felt anything in the past two years since her accident. Betty had removed the leg braces prior to me doing Chi Healing on her by my request. I then held Betty’s hand and her husband held her other hand and I told Betty I wanted her to walk across the room without the leg braces. She started to walk slowly as we held her hands and she turned around and walked back to the room we were in. She also held on to a chair and stooped down and bent her knees, and then sat down and lifted her legs up. Betty’s husband and the radio host almost feinted. Betty was so happy that she could walk without leg braces and overjoyed that she could feel something in her legs again. I was so happy for Betty and I will continue to work with her. This is just one of
many cases I have worked on with Chi healing. I am now performing Chi Healing on around 15 different illnesses which include arthritis, carpel tunnel, stroke, paralysis, multiple sclerosis, fractures, non malignant tumors, Parkinson’s Disease, and other pain related illnesses. I do not do cancer or severe nerve damage. I would like to personally invite anyone suffering in pain to call me and come and see me for Chi Healing. I do not charge for Chi Healing, but I do charge for my program to prevent future pain to possibly occur in your body. My number is (770)875-7177 and gmail is sak5400@gmail.com. I have 9 documented videos on utube and just type (utube chi healing steve kraselsky) to see people being healed from various types of pain. Best wishes, Steve Kraselsky

The Preying Mantis is a formidable and impressive insect, a deadly fighter. It is the only insect that can rotate it's head to look backward. Which really improves it's visual acuity. Visual acuity naturally improves fighting prowess. Many insects whose eyes are located on opposite sides of the head have some visual gaps. But the mantis can rotate it's head making up for those gaps. A fly can tilt their head from side to side, but cannot rotate its head like a mantis. On the picture above, observe and examine the “arms” of the mantis. There are "spikes" or "thorns" on the inside of the arms. This allows the mantis to trap and rip very effectively. The "spikes" run all the way up the arm to the end. In the form there are a number of trapping techniques, and bone breaking techniques that are utilized used once the arm/limb has been trapped, locked and then pinioned in place. So we see joint locks and joint attacks within the form. There are "claw" like positions in the Mantis form which are for gouging at the eyes, the throat, or groin, using the finger singly or dual. Another hand position is called the "Mantis throat box", which was used to actually jab/thrust in to the throat and take hold of the thyroid cartilage (the "Adam's Apple"). The fingers are then forced to close around the trachea, after which leverage is applied so as to crush and pull away. This all makes relevant the concept of the "spikes" and "claw" as they apply to the fingers. And these techniques also make the exercises to strengthen the hands very relevant. The elbows are also used avantageously for strikes, leverage and controlling the “bridge” between you and your opponent. Low kicks are also used in the mantis to break the knees, tibia and fibula, or any other opportunistic leg targets. Elbows are also used. Again, to truly capitalize requires good finger strength. Below you will find a few exercises for Mantis. Mantis can be a complex form in it's compound movements so it is difficult to do it justice in an article. But, hopefully, you will leave with a better understanding of Mantis, conditioning and an idea about the techniques some forms contain. Finger strength helps to fully weaponize and capitalize on this form fully. I like the following story about finger strength. There once was a man who wanted to develop the strongest fingers in the province. To that end he decided to leave his wife for 6 months and retreat into the woods and fully dedicate himself to the practice of developing his fingers. At the end if 6 months he had indeed accomplished his goal and his fingers were very powerful. Excited to return and see his wife he arrived home and knocked on the door, which fell off its hinges. Upon seeing his wife they ran to one another to embrace, upon which he squeezed the life out of her. Dejected and saddened, he sat down and scratched his head, whereupon his ear fell off. I hope you all enjoyed this story. I suppose that the moral of this tale is that too much of anything is a bad thing. The preying mantis, however, can require strong fingers to safely and effectively accomplish its goals. It was required of me to do at least one pushup on my thumb, index and middle fingers with my ring and pinky fingers pulled in.
Tossing and catching Iron Palm bags with the thumb, index and middle fingers is also a beneficial exercise. Below are a sequence of 4 pictures giving you an idea on how to progress through fingertip pushups to strengthen your fingers and hands for not only Mantis but other exercises. This will give you good, practical strength.
These exercises will be truly beneficial to do the most damage with the mantis techniques. It is true, that since you are attacking soft targets you might not need a lot of strength. However, the strength is to protect YOU. To protect your finger joints and to make your techniques as absolutely effective as possible. Even some soft targets can require strength. The Mantis will launch “barrage attacks landing several telling blows in a short period of time. Many times hitting the person from multiple angles. This is done to confuse and overwhelm your opponent. He might be able to block 1, even 2 well placed shots but if you are launching 4, 5 or more attacks rapidly one or more is likely to connect. This is also performed with low blow, with kicks.
Some of the mantis techniques are also very dangerous and not to be used cavalierly. Use these techniques like a gun, only if you have to. One of these is called an “eye scoop which is meant to hit the eye from the side, you will noted that your orbital bone that contains your eye, at the side, even where the skin is, the eye is accessible. With a sideways scooping action the eye can be damaged severely or, possibly, dislodged. Notice in the eye scoop below how the forearm/elbow is on the opponents arm, helping to control the arm and pinioning the elbow as the eye scoop lands to the side of the eye.
Another compound sequence that drops the opponent to the floor with leg attacks, moveing to the rear, and hyper extending, locking and snapping the opponents neck from behind. This is a very dangerous technique and is included for information purposes only.
Summary, Mantis is a form that does not beat around the bush, going for the eyes, groin, throat, back, neck, ears, etc., pretty much any joint and soft targets with compound attacks. No nonsense and "meaty" techniques being taught and reinforced throughout the form. Our mantis form is a long one, 250 moves. But a good workout, fun to do and watch but a deadly and nasty form as well. However, that works in the favor of the practitioner. By; Barbara Finney Originally, Martial arts training was developed for warfare. Historically it was also a means to self betterment in the do arts. Regular people not in the military do take the martial arts for self-defense which was my motive when I decided to become a martial arts student. So once one is a martial artist and you have done the rounds of all the competitions, have rooms full of trophies, your own dojo and many degrees at the black belt level. What challenges do you have left to curatively employ your martial arts skills? Many teach and do have their own dodos, and many become professional bodyguards and bouncers. Another avenue is to become a stunt performer in movies. Still many martial artists used their martial arts skills to become famous movie and television stars. Bruce Lee is first to come to mind as he broke into the industry playing Kato on the old Green Hornet television show, taking Americans at that time by storm, as no one had ever seen fighting skills such as he displayed on television before. Hollywood attempted to capitalize on this new amazing Asian fighting style with other television series like 'Kung Fu' (Which was also Bruce Lee's brain child). Elvis Presley was also an avid and high ranking karateka and made sure to demonstrate this in his movies. This paved the way for the entire genre of martial arts movies to explode on the scene in America propelling such great names as Chuck Norris and many others to fame and fortune. When I was 53 years old I had just undergone a series of personal downturns and tragedies. At that time I decided to walk into a neighborhood dojo with my 9 year old daughter and sign up for karate lessons.
I was fearful to even enter such a place at first AS I was 53 years old at the time and not of good health or physical condition at all. Still I wanted my daughter to have some defensive skills in what I viewed then as a dangers world and my feelings in that regard have only increased since. As she was a very shy child I signed up to take lessons with her. However, the the LAST thing I expected when starting to take martial arts lessons was that I would become involved in the making of a martial arts film, or become the Creative Director of the film company. It has been a wild ride, and it started oh so innocently. I was in my mind just an anonymous student in a dojo, minding my own business and trying not to get hurt or killed by my fellow students. I hadn't been there long when the owner of the dojo, Grandmaster Eddie Thomas approached me once he learned I was a writer with a weekly newspaper column, to get my opinion on this movie script he had written. I was both honored and dismayed that he asked my opinion, as I had in the past taught creative writing in community college and recreation centers and this had taught me that first time authors usually were not skilled and I honestly did not want to hurt his feelings if the script was not very good. However his script was quite good and for a first time writing effort it was damn good. Talos is a screenplay with themes of opposing good and evil. It had a lot in common with films like 'Conan the Barbarian' and other heroic sword and sorcery films. I felt that the script was certainly worth making into a film and told Grandmaster Eddie that this was my opinion as a fan of these types of films. So I discussed what to do with the script with Eddie, who is not only my first real martial arts instructor but someone who has slowly become a great friend. I got a second opinion from a friend of mine, Lisa Ailiff, a former Miss Virginia who had also performed at the inauguration of President George H. W. Bush. and had gone on to become a Hollywood movie starlet for a time. She was in the movie 'Dragnet' with Dan Ackroyd. So I valued her opinion as well. Lisa also felt the film was good, and even felt strongly enough about it to audition later for a part in it when Grandmaster Thomas held an audition at his dojo. Money was the greatest barrier to making the film. You need a LOT of money to make a motion picture. I had friends on the Virginia Film Commission I consulted for help, but as they are not about helping independent film makers, my efforts were useless. The state film commission is interested bringing established Hollywood film companies to film in Virginia, and more importantly spend money in Virginia. Afterwords I approached the editor and owner of the paper I was a writing for, for help and advice. I had assumed he had entrepreneurial skills I did not. He attempted to help but movie-making was just not his thing. But after many fruitless "movie meetings" that were more social gatherings than anything actually productive, Eddie grew impatient and decided since he had told people he was going to make a film decided to do it himself instead of relying on people that only made empty promises. First we formed the movie company STONE SOUP LLC after the children's story of the same name. Philosophically it was a company built from nothing but enthusiasm and a dream. we were going to need magic to pull this off just as in the story of the soup stone. First Eddie bought a high end camera to start filming, editing software, a boom mike, and a Kessler crane. "To heck with investors", Eddie was going to do it himself!
You need more than a camera though. You need props and a cast of other actors and extras. Eddie began recruiting people. Many of the actors and stunt people were Eddies students as well as fellow martial artists from various states. All loyal friends willing to follow him and give their time to the movie without pay, just on the strength of his personality. Eddies student and friend Selena Strickler became the film director. She is a talented graphics arts designer and did all of the filming of the movie and designed the cover art of all the printed materials for the film. Her camera skills were phenomenal for someone who had never filmed a movie. All but one of the main actors had no acting experience, but all gave amazing first time film performances. Props were another expense but nothing would stop Eddie from accomplishing his goal. At a local festival he met Jeff Rigdon and they hit it off immediately. Jeff is a big man of real Viking Heritage who runs an organization in Roanoke, Virginia, named Vikings of the Valley. Vikings of the Valley is a historical and educational organization. Jeff Rigdon had many members of his organization as well as an entire warehouse full of authentic Viking costumes, that he generously loaned to the TALOS movie project. Eddie cast him in the role of his side kick and true friend, a role that Jeff has mirrored in real life as well. Jeff's warehouse became the sound stage for all the indoor scenes of the film. Each new scene was done in the warehouse but each time the setting was changed. Professional film crews have many cameras filming scenes from multiple angles. Not having those resources Selena would have a scene repeated dozens of times, moving her location each time to film from multiple angles. She would climb up on stepladders to get the effect of an aerial camera for instance. The creativity that went into making TALOS on a near zero budget was fascinating to watch. One Sunday when our dojo was closed for the day Jeff with his son and Eddies help erected an entire authentic replica of a Viking tent right in the middle of the dojo, in order to film this one key scene between Eddie and Jeff. Then they took this huge structure down and by Monday morning when students returned, there was no sign such a thing had ever been there. A dummy was made for a scene where Talos goes over a cliff causing many to ask how Eddie was able to do that unhurt. All of the outdoor locations were real and even famous sites in Virginia. Many were filmed at places like the hiking trail known as the 'Dragons' Tooth', that is part of the Appalachian Trail. Such real and visually beautiful locations added to the movies overall quality. One former student of Eddies is the owner of a local cave tourist site called Dixie Caverns and several scenes were filmed inside the cave when it was closed to tourists. A scene where Eddies character rescues the movies heroine from cannibals was filmed in Dixie Caverns and a scene where the films evil wizard brings the main villain back to life was also filmed inside of Dixie Caverns. Another set was an equestrian center where the owner provided the horses and the locations to film scenes involving horses. She even gave crash courses to the cast that had never been on horses before. She too was one of Eddies former students.
The movie always seemed to have luck on its side, as if it was supposed to be made. One scene in the move was due to a terrific snow storm Virginia had. Eddie and Selena went out in the snow and filmed Eddie performing a "kata in the snow." It was cinematically a very beautiful scene. And in one scene in the above mentioned Dixie Caverns, showing Eddie running through the cave system, a bat came out of nowhere, a real life wild bat, and it ran alongside Eddie just above his shoulder during each of three takes. It was as if the bat were his pet, but it was an unplanned extra feature for that scene. Another scene of a village was filmed at an old church nativity set constructed by the same gentleman who built "Foamhenge". Foamhenge is local replica of the famous Stonehenge in England, so called as it is made from hard foam, and it was also used in a few of the scenes in the film. The castle in the film was a mausoleum in a local cemetery. Shot from the angles used it proved very convincing. The amphitheater for the big final fight scene was also in the same cemetery. Selena was able to make the final fight scene of the movie look like we had a cast of hundreds of people by filming again from multiple angles again and again and again and later editing the film making the group of 50 look far larger. If Talos had the luxury of a real budget it could have have been a contender for quality up against many current Hollywood films. Currently for the Sci-Fi channel is potentially interested in Talos II, if it can be filmed in broadcast quality materials. With the help of ROMAN Pictures, a D.C. based film company that already produces some shows for television Talos II will be a more elaborate production. Eddie has played the role of a CIA assassin in one of Roman Pictures productions, and is slated to do many more roles with Roman Productions., and is slated to do many more roles with Roman Productions. Grandmaster Thomas choreographed all the fight scenes as well as playing (of course) the starring role of King Talos. Like Sylvester Stallone, who wrote the the story of Rocky with the intent of playing the role himself, Eddie rather did the same thing and actually few people on the planet have the skills to pull off the martial arts stunts that his character did in the film Talos. Grandmaster Thomas started martial arts as a teenager and got his first black belt at age 17. He is now in his early 50's and is one of the more skilled martial artists in the world, having hundreds of trophies and Hall of Fame awards to his name. He and his character Talos are spiritually one and the same person. Making your own martial arts movie is a huge daunting task, but a lot of fun and satisfaction from a job well done. With creative thinking and help from others it need it can be done. If you have a lot of money it is no problem, but if you do not, like the making of Talos, you have to think "outside the box", "improvise, overcome, adapt" as they say in the military.
Here is a link to the site where Talos is sold with a short preview of the film: http://talosthemovie.com/ There is also a fan page on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/TALOS-The-Movie/210038025971 You can obtain books on script writing, on making Indy films and organize your dojo, friends and family to see what you can do to create your own action adventure film displaying your groups martial arts skills. So write a script and go to it. You can then produce it, get copies made and sell it on Amazon.com and other places as well. Best regards, Barbara mailto:firebird@taela.net

I wrote this poem in November of 1967 as part of my mindset regarding the Vietnam debacle. This is among a number of pieces I composed to foment a higher consciousness as an opposition to war. The people of Huang Po are fictitious, but the implication is just. THE FOLK OF HUANG PO In the mountain of the valley of Huang Po, I see velvet clouds caress the sky. The tall grass is ever straight and green; the birds that fly seem to go to the sea.. The entire smallness of it all when we fight each other for a lesser thing than that which could be gained for more. Look not to the South if you are of the North; be not of the West if you be of the East. In Huang Po the sun reflects off the mountain and shines into the valley heart.in Huang Po valley people dance and sing. The mountain tells them they may be besieged.. The mountain people say, "We must prepare to deal with the valley folk who undermine the bee which flies to suckle honey and tells the flower of its need.. The flower tells the bee to suck its life. This above all must be seen to be believed and the turtle who moves not fast is soon bereaved in a quest which is seen and known, driving a soul to a madness of flowers. Obsessed with ruling, oppressors desire to play. The folk of Huang Po do not understand this game; they are simple folk and know not much of it. The generals say leave them to themselves. "Did you Honorable Sire, see the birds go north?" But soon the snows will melt on the peaks; the flood waters will bring mountain soil to the valley. The valley flowers will germinate the mountain soil, and cleansing the spirit with a new dawn, the waters will always flood in springtime. I think I will observe the trees and perhaps wait for the birds again.. Š Stephen F. Kaufman 1967 For more info on the author, visit: http://www.hanshi.com
