TEXT CODES & FLOWCODES
How to use Text Codes: 1. Open your text messaging on your smartphone. 2. 41404 goes in the Phone Number line. 3. Text Code goes in the Message line. 4. Hit Send to get the link!
How do I scan a FlowCode? There is no app needed to scan a Flowcode! Anyone can scan a FlowCode using just the camera on their smartphone. Aim your camera at the code and tap the notification banner when it appears (this step is not necessary for newer phones). If you are farther away from the code, you may need to zoom in a bit to focus on the code. If the code does not scan when you hover your phone over it, it might be due to the type of phone you’re using. If you have a Samsung device, try holding down the home button. A talking bar should appear, and to the left is a QR code icon. Press this icon and Google lens will appear and scan the code. If your phone does not have Google lens activated, open the quick settings panel and enable QR code scanning. Now, you should be able to scan the FlowCode.

So why choose Western Red Cedar for your next decking project? IT’S YOUR BASIS FOR BEAUTY If you’ve got a bunch of totally amazing (yet somewhat disconnected), décor ideas floating around in your head, let our wood’s natural beauty and endless versatility be your guiding force. Trust us on this one – start with a stunning Real Cedar deck, and suddenly your designer daydreams and Pinterest wish lists start manifesting into one cohesive reality. Just think of Real Cedar decking as your blueprint to backyard bliss. IT’S EASY TO WORK WITH That’s why so many home improvers like working with Western Red Cedar lumber. It lies flat and straight, so it’s super easy to fit in place. Plus, this sturdy and structurally solid wood is surprisingly light, so it’s easy to lug around your site – and less strenuous lifting means more time to enjoy the creative process. After all, building decks shouldn’t be a pain in the neck (and we mean that both literally and figuratively). IT’S A GREEN CHOICE Designing your dream deck should be a positive and creatively fulfilling experience. So the last thing you want is environmental concerns stemming the flow of your ideas. With Real Cedar, you needn’t worry. In terms of sustainability, it beats composite decking on every level. In fact, Real Cedar actually boasts a net carbon sink, meaning our wood removes greenhouse gases from the atmosphere – whereas other building materials emit greenhouse gases. So dream big. As long as you’re working with Real Cedar, there’s no need in letting eco-guilt hold you back. IT’S TIMELESS AND TOUGH While garden trends come and go, Real Cedar decking never goes out of style. So if the home décor magazines are urging you to switch out your wicker furniture for a wrought iron bistro set, let em.’ Your timeless Real Cedar deck is going to look, smell and feel beautiful no matter how you furnish it. You can also take comfort in knowing that Real Cedar decking isn’t just a pretty face. It out performs all of those synthetic building materials on the market right now. That’s because Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insect attacks…. Also, did we mention it’s beautiful? www.SICBAHomeShow.com

GARDENING TIPS
GARDENING WITH KIDS If you are searching for a way to connect your kids with growing plants and gardening, snow peas are an easy and rewarding plant in both garden and container. Mostly because they are so easy to grow! And quick too! And as the peas get bigger, you can pick and eat them.
Love Lavender? • Choose varieties that are hardy for the area • Plant lavenders in full sun so they receive at least 6 to 8 hours of sun a day. • Grow lavenders on mounds, in raised beds or on slopes for better drainage. • Mulch with sand to keep the plants clean and reflect heat & light. • Prune by one-third in late winter or early spring. • Harvest blossoming stalks when half the flower buds have opened.
The fragrance alone is worth it’s weight in gold! GARDENING TIPS www.SICBAHomeShow.com

BETTER WATCH YOUR ASH My name is Ben Sousa. I am with Craft Stove Mount Vernon Wa. and I’ve been in the Hearth Industry since 1985. Recently I was reminded how volatile ash is within a stove, fireplace, pellet stove, or outdoor firepit. And how careful we must be when removing for disposal. When putting paper in a stove that had been out for 5 days getting ready for a fire the next day. I was surprised that before I got kindling cut the paper had ignited!! Over the years I have heard so many scary stories and here are just a few. The stories go on and on… The inert material that is left within the ash can hold heat for days to the point of spontaneous combustion. (Google spontaneous combustion!)
• Someone told me, “I put the ashes in a metal bucket. But I put the bucket on my deck.” Well, guess what! They got a new deck. • Someone told me, “I use a shop vac for my pellet stove to clean it and it had been out overnight and I vacuumed out the pellet stove and sometime later I smell something plastic melting, only to find my shop vac melting in my garage.” • Someone asked me, “How do I get wax off my stove. My fire had been out for days and I thought I would get the fire ready for next time. Meanwhile, the candle looks cool on top of my stove. Later I walked by my wood stove and most of the candle is over the top of our woodstove.”
If you only have a little space to grow your garden... Vegetables, herbs, greens, flowers and many plants can be grown in a container. • Consider shade/light needs. • Plastic or wood dry out more evenly than clay. • Water before noon so plants can drink all day long. Grow lettuce, basil, mint, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries & more!
GARDENING TIPS www.SICBAHomeShow.com

So please watch your ash, because nobody else will. • Put your ash in a metal receptacle and store it away from anything combustible. (Ash can be very beneficial for some garden plants so maybe throw in your soil your plants my like it.) • If you use a shop vac for your pellet stove (never recommended on wood) empty the ash out into a metal receptacle or your garden. • Never assume your ash isn’t hot. (No matter what anybody says!) Let's keep the home and campfires burning, not our homes and forests!

ABOUT SICBA The Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association was founded in 1979 and has been active since then. When the interest rate was in double digits, SICBA members drove across the country to Washington, D.C., collecting 2x4s with messages for Congress protesting the state of the home building industry at the time. Now over 400 members strong, SICBA continues to advocate for affordable housing and the health of the building industry this day. Our partnership with the Building Industry Association of Washington helped create the framework to get the industry safely back to work during the COVID-19 crisis and to serve as an example for other industries in their safe return to work. Thanks to our members’ commitment to work safely within these guidelines, residential construction has been going strong in Washington ever since.

SICBA members work and live in Skagit and Island Counties and take an active role in our local community. We host the annual SICBA Home & Garden Show and the SICBA Home Tour to allow our builders to showcase their craftsmanship to the community and to prospective buyers. We work with charities and nonprofits in our neighborhoods to strengthen our community and help the needy, such as our annual golf tournament which gives a portion of its proceeds to charity and our holiday drive in 2020 which raised over $15,000 for two local food banks in Skagit and Island Counties.

In addition to advocating for small businesses and affordable housing, SICBA keeps an eye towards workforce development. In many trades today, only 1 new person joins the workforce for every 5 that retire out. We advocate for greater emphasis in schools on the trades as a rewarding career path for students. SICBA and its chapter association SWHB (South Whidbey Home Builders) gave $6000 in scholarships in 2020, to children of SICBA members and to students seeking careers in the construction trades.
