InJanuary1974.theMagazinewas takenoverbyaneditorialCommittee—all SouthernStrutMembers—allPilots.They havecarriedontheimageduringadifficult time.FortheytookoverjustastheHead OfficewasundergoingStallchanges— changesthathavenotbeenresolvedbythe endofthetirstyear.So,notypingFacilities andagenerallatenessinnewsitemsreachingthem,tosaynothingofbeingtheyear inwhichinflationovertookusalland theirhandsweretiedbytheMagazine budgetthathadheenagreedattheturnof theyear.Towardstheendof-74our President.AirCommodore0.1.C.Paul. relinquishedhisadditionaljoborChairmanoftheEditorialCommitteeandthe nominationofthispostfelltothewriter.

ThePFAMachinesthatWEREatLympnehangar includeJodels,Minicabs,Nippersandmanymore. Thankgoodnessthewholeenthusiasticassemblyis beingtransferredtoLydd,notjustfoldedupasso oftenisthecase.CinquePortsF.C.closeduptonight. butopensuptomorrowontheirnewfield,asactiveas everandfieldingoneofthestrongestPFAaffiliations intheCountry.Needlesstosay,theirStaffgowith them,theirCHandtheirChiefEngineer,bothPFA membersandboth,believeitornot,workingonPFA projects.CananyClubintheCounnyequalthatfor enthusiasm?

Billlooksafterthewholeengineeringside,doing workonandsigningoutbusinessaircraftandatthe sametimeispreparedtoallowPFAmembers—and thatisthequalification—toworkontheirowncraft, whichhewillkeepaguidingeyeon,andsignoutwork thathasbeendone,providedofcoursethatitiscarried out tothesamehighstandardashisownengineers.He mightevenlendyouhisowntoolsifyoulookpoor enough!

Nothat'snotaCurrieWotthey'reburning.it'sa ffenuineNovemberthefifthbonfirethatmarkedthe closingdownoftheCinquePortsFlyingClubat Lympne,theendofLympne(orAshfordasitwas latterlyknown),theendofaneraofstringandfabric flyingthathasgoneontheresinceonlytheGranddadsamonguscanremember.Thefieldhasclosed, thankstobigbusiness,thankstomodernairtransport operatorsandthankstotheanything-that-flys-swat-itbrigade.Itwillneverbeforgotteninthehistorybooks orinthememoirsofearliergenerationsofPFAtype Flyers.NameslikeAmyJohnson,BertElinklerand BillLancasterwillforeverbelinkedwiththeearly HistoryofaviationandLympneinparticular.This fieldhasoutlivedsuchsoul-stirringdestinationsas Heston,Hanworth,andCroydon,butnowitsturn hascome.

Inrecentyearsitsformercastoroiloriginshave beenreflectedbyasteadygrowthofEWAmembershipwhichhasemergedamongtheCinquePortsFlyingClubMembers,withourtypeofmachinesgrowing innumberasnewcomerssavouredtheprideofownershipthatgoesalongwiththespiritofowner-maintenancethathasbeenencouragedbytheClub Management.DirectorofBusinessAirTravel,Charles Hamilton,whooperatestheclub,hasadifferentoutlookonlightaviationbusinessthanmostofhiscontemporaries.Itseemsthatifhemustextractapound outofthepilot'spockettomakealiving—he'dsooner doitbyrentinghangarageandsellingengineering inspectionthanbytakingacutfromClubowned circuitbashers,theendresultbeinghimstillgettinga livingandthePPLgettingcheaperhours.Itallmakes sensetothoseluckychapsupthereinKentwhoare ENCOURAGEDtoowntheirownplanes.Whata FUNNYmaninthisdayandaee!

SergeantOverylefttheR.A.F.notsoverylongago, fullypractisedonCometsandsuchlikeandnowfinds hissparetimefullytakenupwiththetotalre-buildof aBrochetPipistrall,halfofwhichisinhisgarageand thewingsareatAshford.Allthestrippingdownhas beendone,thematerialspurchasedfromtheKent GlidingClubatChallock,andmostoftheskarftng-in ofthelittlebitsofmissingwoodhasbeencompleted. HehasbeeninclosetouchwithPFA'sJohnWalker onthisre-build,butcannotyetgiveusacompletion date.Hehasbeenexchangingideasandadvicewith RoyNerou,thePFAmemberwhohasreconstructed PipistrallBADV.Bill'sotherinterestisbuildingupa

HeisintouchwithseveralareasofWorldenthusiasts thatknowoforwantbitsforno-longer-madeaeroplanes.Hethinksthatanawfullotofpeoplearesitting onsparesthattheyonedayhopetofindausefor, whilstothersaresearchingtheglobefortheverysame piece.Ifyou'vegotsomething,orwantsomething, contactBill,hecanprobablyhelpand,what'smore, hewon'twantmuchoverthecostofpostandpacking fordoingso.

No?—Nordid1'tillImetNickandsawtheprogress thatheismakingwithaTaylorMonoplane.Nick learnedtoflyonlythreeandahalfyearsagoandnow hasaCPLandCFItohiscredit.Hispresentjobhe sayshe'fell'intobypurechance,whilsttakingtimeoff toworkinthehangarononeofhisseveralre-builds-aNipper,'ATWB',Minicab,'BANC'andothers.He tellsastoryofflyingtoaShorehamRally,findinga nestofbirdsintheaeroplane,flyinghomeandseeing themotherbirdreturntotheaircrafttofeedit'syoung unawareofthejoyridethey'dbeenon.Nick'sface turnsredatthementionofpre-flightinspections!

TheMonoinquestionistobeengincdwitha WalterMikronMk3,whichwillgiveitanentirely differentlineatthepowerendthanallitsfore-runners. Theideaistostreamlineupthecowlingsandgivean overallsmarterappearance.O.K.,Nick,theidea's good,butjustlet'sseeitatSywell.Finishingdateis estimated1975,butitwouldbenicetoseeSOMETHINGcompletedaheadofscheduleforonce.For thewoodtostartthejob,Nickboughtacomplete 'lump'fromSlingsby,size6"by9"by12'longand reducedittothedimensionsrequiredfortheindividual componentparts.Hedidthiswithanelectrichand powersaw,whichmightgiveafewthoughtstoother would-beconstructors.Hehasnowhandedoverthe part-completedjobtoPeterKingsford,whoisassisting

hint,whilstNickconcentratesonthemetalfittings. The'Photosshowtheprogressthathasbeenmadeto date.

Nickhasthegoodfortunetomakefrequenttripsto theContinentasSkipperoncharterflights.Insteadof sippingcoffeewithhisaircrewcolleagueswhilstwaitingforhispassenger'sreturn,hedoesatourof inspectionoflikelyhidingplacesforoldaircraftcomponentsstoredinbackcornersofhangarsandisgettingveryadeptatprizingtheoddbargainpiecefrom thehandsofourCommonMarketfriendsatvery un-Englishprices.Someofushavewonderedhowon earththesecontactsweremadeacrosstheChannel. Nowyouknowonemethod.Nowondertheselow pricemachinesarebeginningtofilterthroughtothe hardseekingPFABuyers!TheMicron3forthe TaylorMonowasacquiredfromBeauvaisAeroClub, althoughNickdidn'tconsiderthatataparticularly knock-downprice,Ithinkhejustgottiredofsearching. Youmaybethinkingthatsomeluckybersgetall theluck,buthetoldmethatifanyoneislookingfor someparticularlydifficultsparepartforaFrench aeroplane,he'llbegladtohaveanosearoundover thereontheirbehalf,JustcontacthimatLydd.

Well,theCinquePortsAeroClubismovingand althoughnowbasedatLydd,isoneoftheoldestAero Clubsstillinbeing.Aroundthebonfirethatnight thereweresadheartsattheendofanostalgicera.Like oldmenwegrassrootsaviatorsliketolookbackon thegoodolddays,whendopeandfabricwasallthere WAStomakeaflyingmachineoutof.ButBusiness AirTravel,TheFlyingClub,BillOvery,NickCole andalltheirhelpershavemovedtoanewhome.They promisethePFAthesameserviceasalways.Wewish themwell.Ineverdidgettothatopeningpartyat Lydd.

Onceuponatimeacarefreevintageaeroplanepilot wasflyinghislovelyyellowbiplaneoverthesunny countrysideofOxfordshirewestwardstowardsthe beautifulCherwellValley.Aheadofhimlaythesleepy markettownofBicesterandhesensiblyglancedathis maptoconfirmhisposition.Butwhathcsawalarmed himandposedhimquiteaproblem.Heknewthathe shouldclimbtocrossthetownatnotlessthan1500 feetbuthecouldn'tbecauseoftheactiveMATZpanhandlestretchingeastfromHeyford.Sohethought aboutflyingroundthetown.Buthecouldnotturn leftashewouldinfringetheWeston-on-the-Green darTerareanorcouldheturnrightforfearofinfringingtheR.A.F.Bicesteraerodromezone.Whaton earthcouldhcdo?Asheponderedtheproblemthe sunwentbehindacloudandherealisedthatitwasone ofthosedaysheshouldhavestayedinbed.

OLDWARDENANDTHETHOMPSONTROPHY

Withthrottlesconfidentlyclosedat800ft.onbase legandnosesloweredtotheapproachspeedattitude, twelvevintageaircrafttookpartinthcVintageAircraftClubspotlandingcompetitionfortheThornpson trophyatOldWardenlastOctober.Justhowpopular thiseventisbecomingwithmemberscanbejudgedby theweatherconditionsprevailingasgustysouthwest windswhichbroughtheavyraindeterrednoneofthe contestants.Followingadetailedbriefingat1330the competitionbeganatprecisely1400withthetake-off oftheoldestmachine,DouglasHull'ssilverandblack D.H.60GGipsy:Mothfollowedatliveminuteintervals bytherestofthefield.Arrayedbothsidesofthe targetlinewerethejudgesledbyChairmanCarl Butlerand se•e ralothercommitteemembersThe winnerwasTonyBianchihivingablackBuckerBu 133JungmeisterG-AXMTwhopulled ort twoperfect landingsdespitethedrivingrainofafrontalpassage. ThecompleterebuildofRaymondBlain'sSpartan ArrowG-ABWPisnownearlyfinished,reportsRov Mills.TheworkwhichwasundertakenbytheM.P.NI. groupattheir'tunnelworkshopinLondonhastaken over3500manhours.Duetooilsoakagethefuselage hadtobedismantledandbuiltupusingnewwood. Similarworkhadtobecarriedoutonthewingsand tailplanemembersastheirconditionhaddeteriorated tosuchadegreeastorequirecompleterefabrication. TheengineisanuprightCirrusHermesIIgiving

108h.p.atfullpower.Ithasreceivedatopoverhaul whichalsorequiredallvalveguidestobereplaced. FIDELITY

FormanyofustheCoralSeabringstomindthe majorAmericannavalvictoryintheSouth-west Pacific,wheninMay1942theJapaneseadvance towardsAustraliawashaltedbythedecisiveuseof aircraftcarriersandairpower.Sometenyearsearlier thistropicalexpanseofwaterwasfirstcrossedbyan aeroplaneflyingfromNewGuineatoQueensland, Australia.ThepilotwasMr.S.Marshall,anAustralian whohadlearnedtoflyonAvro504'sin1919andthe aeroplanewasaWestlandWidgeonparasolwith extrafueltankageforthelongflight.MrMarshall,a spryseptuagenarian,stillownstheWidgeon,VTI-UGI, tothisdayalthoughitisnowdismantledandstored behindthescenesofhisaviationmuseuminSydney. Mostvintageaircraftownerswhohaverebuilttheir machineshavestriventorestorethemtotheir'asnew' condition,paintingthemintheiroriginalcolour schemes.Sincetheintroductionofpracticalcolour photographybyKodakjustbeforethesecondWorld Warwehavetakencolourofaeroplanesforgranted asthesuperbclarityoftheKodachomeshaveshown usthemostsubtleshadesofthepaintjobincludingthe colourofinsigniasandairframenotices.Priortothe adventofcolourfilm,however,allaircraftpictures wereinmonochromeanditissuprisinglydifficultto assesstheexactcoloursfromblackandwhitephotographs.Apartfromexistingmagazinearticlesandlogbooknotes,cluesastotheoriginalshadeofcolour canbeinterpretedfromoldblackandwhitephotographsifothersubjectsofknownshade,suchasflags, advertisementsetc.,areincluded.Expertsinthisfield ofaviationhistoryarerarebutonesuchdedicated researcherisTonyWoollettwhohasdevotedmany yearsofproducingadefinitiveoriginalofmany Britishlightaircraftthatmaybeusedforfuture reference.

Swallowsaredescendedfromaveryinterestingline ofKlemmdesigns,theveryfirstwoodencantileverwingedlightaeroplanes,appearinginGermanyinthe 1920s.TheU.K.builtSwallowwasarefinedversion, stillretainingthehugeglider-likewingsoflowloading and,inthe1930smostlypoweredbythePobjoyseries ofRadialengines.

'PSisuniqueinthatitflewonitsown,beforethe war,afterbeinghand-swungwithoutchocks.It clockedupIhr.30mins,solobeforemakingaperfect landinginafieldwithoutanydamage.Italsohasthe distinctionofbeingregisteredonlyoneletterafter JeanBatten'srecordbreakingGullG-ADPR,soithas alwaysbeeningoodcompany.

NowownedbypartnersPeterHarrisandBillEvans, theSwallowwasrebuilttofullsplendourlastyearand IhadthehonourofflyingitwithPetertoSwanton MorleybywayofOldWarden,obligatorystopping placeenrouteforsuchairbornehistory.

Sittingintherearcockpit,theimpressionisoneof austerity,butthelayoutisbusinesslike.Brakcsand trimareontherightwitheasilyreachedleversandthe onlystrangeextraontheleftisahandpumpwhich raisesfueltoaheadertankfromthewing,shouldthe mechanicalpumpfail.Agaugejustbehindtheengine hastobecheckedatintervals,oryoumaybeflyinga glider!

Primingisbywayoftheki-gasspumpoutsideand thecylindersare'sucked-in'untilall7arefairlyrich. Peterwarnedmetoignoremostofthenoisefromthe engineandproceededtohandswing.Therewasan unbelievableclatteringfromupfrontandthebig, coarse-pitchpropellerthrashedaroundslowly,soI couldamostcounttheturns.Reductiongearssound, frankly...different.

Oilpressureconfirmedthatallwaswellandwe taxiedout,theenginehavingsomeratheroddpatches ofvibration,perhapsfrombacklashinthegearing,but carefulselectionofthesmoothpatchesgavemore comfort.

AthighRPM.,andthatisratherabove3000,the engineissilk-smoothallthetime,soourimmediate misgivingsweregroundless.TheSwallowaccelerated smoothlyenoughformypeaceofmind,theflying attitudeeasilyattainedwithoutundueswingandthen soaredintotheairgracefully.

Itreallyisasuperbpieceofdesign.thelongwings givingaflyingspeedofjust40kts.attake-offanda climbinthe50s.Itflewhappilyinthe70-80rangeon onlyan80h.p.engineandwasveryefficientforits age.Inoticedthatthewingscontainedfeaturessuch aswash-outatthetipsfoundelsewhereonmuchlater woodenaeroplanessuchastheJodelseries.

Astallgaveverygoodcontroldowntothe40sand aaentlepitchnose-downwithnotendencytodropa wing.Evenmisuseofthecontrolsgaveasedateentry tothespin,fromwhichrecoverywasimmediately effective.Areallady,Ithought.

ArrivalatOldWardenwasnoproblemandthe Swallowcanbelandedinquiteashortspaceoffan approachat55kts..theonlylimitationbeingacrosswindproblemwhichfirstmanifestsitselfasoneruns outofrudder.Intruth,thereisn'treallymuchrudder controlatverylowspeeds,butbearinginmindthat aeroplanesofthedaywereflownintowindwhen takingoffandlanding.thissimplymeansthatthe Swallowpilotmustn'tpushhisluckinmodern conditions.

Attimeofwriting,thishasjustbeenfittedand1 aIll justrecoveringfromadayofswingingtheproperller inanattempttogiveititsfirstrun.fromnew.

Arathertightengine,itcoughs,runserraticallyand slowlyforafewseconds,butdoesnotyetpickupand runnicely.butweliveinhope.Onewayoranother, withexhaustivechecksoftiming,mixtureetc.,wewill getitflying,formanyyears,wehope,ofvintage Swallowing.

Itisrathernicetomeetthoseveteranswhocansay "Yes,didmyfirstsoloononeofthoseatHanworthWe'remeetingthemallthetime.Onegent evenbroughtalongallhisoldpre-warmaps,inmint condition,showinga'NationalAirRoute'from CroydontotheCoastnearLympne.Ilegainedhis'A' LicenceontheSwallowandisarecentPPLcandidate afteralay-offormanyyears.

TheSwallowisbestdescribedasanAeroplaneor Character.ThesoundofthePobjoyisunlikeanything elseIhaveeversatbehind,butitisincrediblyefficient, deliveringits80orsohorsesataneffectiveRPM,then applyingthetractiveeffortbywayofgreatwhirling bladesofunbelievablepitchatwhatwepresumedto bethemosteffectiverotationalspeed,atthebusiness end.

IamamemberofTheUltra-lightAircraftAssociation,W.A.Branch.In1958orthereaboutsthisgroup beganworkonaDruineTurbi.Wheuthejobwasclose tobeingcompletedtheaircraftwasmovedtoKellerberrin,acountrytown106milesfromPerth.Ijoined theassociationandheardofit.Beinganoldie,I wantedanaircraftwithnottoomuchworkrequiredto finish,soflewtoKellerberrinandlaterboughtitfor 1000dollars.TheaircrafthaswithittwoGipsyMinor engines,onebeingincomplete.Theonetobeusedhas lowhoursafteranoverhaul.AMothMinorengine mountisfitted.IwishtogetintouchwithTurNowners inEnglandinordertofindoutiftheenginemountfor aMothMinorisapprovedandisbeingusedforthe Turbi.

Thewingwascompletebutuncovered,fuselage mostlycompletetogetherwithcompletedandcovered controlsurfaces.TwoGipsyMinorengines(onebeing incomplete)andthreeairscrewsandinstrumentscame withthedeal.

MyfirstjobwastohireatruckandshiftittoPerth fromKellerberrin,acountrytown106milesaway. Butthatisanotherstory.

Anyadditiontothefamilyusuallycausesalittle reorganizingandtheTurbiwasnoexception.Itwas crammedinour30ft.byl2ft.garagependingalittle reorganizingofverandahspace.Thistookafewweeks. InthemeantimeIcoulddolittlebutporeoverthe plans,inspecttheaircraftandmakenotes.

FollowingJohnPothecary'sarticleonflighttesting wemusthaveallseenthesubsequentreferenceto duplicateinspectionofflyingcontrolsafterdismantling.

HavingbeenaP.F.A.inspectorformanyyearsnow Iwassurprisedtoseethisannouncementaspreviously noonehadeveradvisedmethatduplicateinspection waspartofacertificationon a homebuiltaircraftbeing certificatedoutsidetherequirementsofCertificatesof Compliance.

Ofcourse,onavoluntarybasisthereisnothingto belostbyasmanypeopleasonelikeslookingatthe assemblyofasetofflyingcontrols(andenginecontrols)asmanytimesastheywish. Iwould question, however,whetherthereisanyfundamentallogicin controlsbeingsignedoutasaspecialcaseinthe assemblyofanaircraft.Allpartsofanaircraftrequire inspectionandmanymorepartsthancontrolcircuits cansuffercatastrophicfailureiftheinspectionisnot uptoscratch.

November1973foundmebusilystrippingfabric liomtheWoodsringsonthewingsandailerons, removingtheCockpitfloorpanelsandmakingeverythingreadyfortheCA.A.inspectortocheckmy AusterJING-AHCKinpreparationforthenewC.of A.ThefollowingweektheInspectorandaShoreham basedengineerarrivedtotestthefabric.

FirstthePortTailplane..'ThreeGreens'The fabricwassound!NexttheStarboardtailplane.This timetheindicatorgaveonlyI green. butstillshowed thefabricwasacceptable.

Wemovedontothefuselagetop.Thetesterripped throughthefabricsoquicklytherewasbarelytimeto noticethecolourcoderingindicatingthe[resistance beforepenetration.Fuselagesidesandbottomwere similarasalsowerebothundercarriagelegs.Bynow itwasbecomingaprocessionof"Reds-.Starboard wingtop.fourtestsallgaveadecisive"red".The undersideswerethesameaswastheaileron.Wewent tothePortmainplaneandprovedconclusivelythat herealsothefabricwas'pastitsprime'.

StrippinganAusterisquiteaneasytask.Laurie MansfieldoftheSouthernStrutbroughthiscarinto thehangarandpositioneditbeneatheachwinginturn totaketheweightduringremovalAfriendbrought Instrailertotheairfieldandtransportedbothwingsto myhomeatSaltdeanwhileIfollowedupwith elevators,tailplanes.rudder.airscrew,radioanddoors.

Idecidedtostriponewingandthestarboard empennage.keepingtheremainingportmembers coveredaspatterns,havingneverbeforeattemptedto recoveranaeroplane.Themetalfittingsandframeworkwererubbeddowntocheckforcorrosion.then reprotectedandsetasideforfutureinspection.About thistimeIreceivedC.A.A.approvalforJohnPothecarytoberesponsibleforthemaintenancestandard. JohnholdsthenecessaryendorsementsforAuster aeroplanesandGypsyMajorenginesand is an enthusiasticre-builderofvintageaircraft.

AlthoughtheAirportManagementhadhalvedthe hangaragechargesforthefuselage.itwasnowbecomingapparentthattherebuildwouldtakesomeconsiderabletimeandthemonthlycostswouldbeasizeableamount.Ithereforedecidedtoremovethewing onwhichIwascurrentlyworkingfrommygarageto thenearbygarageofmywifeNmother.Afriendly contractorloanedhislow-loadertobringthefuselage homeandInowproceededtostriptlnstothehare metalandprepareforthenewcovering.

IfoundthatR.F.SavwellofGatwickstockmost itemsrequiredforacompleterebuildand,inparticular, DirectorStevenSaywellhasbeenmosthelpfulin loaningdrawingsandacompletefabricwinghag to useasapatternwhilemakingupmyown.AtSaywelEs Iboughtaroll of DTD575fabric,allthe2"and4" widecrimpedre-inforcingtapes.thewaxedstring. Woodsringsanddrainageeyelets.Ihavealsomade considerableuseofRollasonsatShorehamtopurchase dopeandsparesfortheGipsyEngineBothfirms employveryhelpfulstaff.Asamemberofthe"Auster Pilot'sClub."Inowreceivehandyhintsonrebuilding inthenewslettersandhaveaccesstoaregularspares list whichiscirculatedtomembers.

unitstoallowthefabrictosagawayfromthebracing untilitstiffenedanddried.ThistimeIwassuccessful andcontinuedinthismannerwithasecondcoatof redtauteningdope.TherethenfollowedtheapplicationofI"widere-inforcingtapeovertheribs.stuck downbyliberallyapplieddope,andwhendrytherib stitchingwascarriedoutwithwaxedstringusingthe Seineknotasdescribedinthearticleon'Dopeand Fabric;publishedbytheE.A.A.ofAmerica.This bookletIhavefoundveryinformativeonallaspects oftherecovergame.

Thestringingwasnextcoveredbv2"widecrimped tapefollowedbytheedgetapesagainwelldopeddown andthedraineyeletswereappliedatthisstage.When drythewholetailplanewassandeddown,carebeing takennottocutthroughthetapeovertheknots.There thenfollowedthreemorebrushedcoatsofredtauteningdopeeachlightlysandeddownandtheunitwas thenlefttostandforseveralweeksThetautening actioncontinuesforsonictimeanditisadvisablenot tosprayonthealuminiumfinishingdopeandsubsequentpigmenteddopeuntilthistighteningis complete.

HavingfoundIcouldhandlethedopeandfabricI proceededtocompletetheothertailplane,elevators. trimmer,rudderandundercarriage.

1de-carbonisedtheGipsyengineandherefoundthe EngineHandbookpublishedbyHawkerSiddelevand marketedbyBillOvery.ChiefEngineerattheCinque PortsFlyingClub.aninvaluableguide.

Thefuselagewasnowreadyforthe"treatment-. Usingtheknowledgegainedonthetailsurfaces,I coveredfirstthefin.followedbythetop,bottomand finishingwiththesides.Again5coatsofredtautening dopewereappliedbybrushandafter2weeksIsprayed on4coatsofAluminiumNonTauteningfinishing dope,eachlightlysandeddownusingfinewetanddry paper.Thefinishedcolourwasthensprayedonand thecompletefuselagerubbeddownsmoothwith 'T-Cut-rubbingcompoundfollowedby"Simonizecarwax.

Theundercarriagewasthenfixedonandthe fuselagecocoonedinordertostandoutside,thus leavingroominthegaragetore-commenceworkon themainplanes.

Thisworkwilllastthroughthedepthsofwinter. Thethoughtofallthatrib-stitchingcertainlyappears verydauntingatthisstagebutbySywell'75itwillall bejustamemory(Ihope)andthe"Laughofthe Year'',sodescribedbyanunsympatheticPFAmember, willoncemorebewingingitswayproudlyaroundthe sk

ItwasonthatdayfiftyyearsagothatthefirstMoth emergedfromdeHavillancEshomeatStagLane.For therecordthenewworldhadtowaitanotherfiveyears forMrPipertomakehisfirstCub.Duringthefirst vtorldwarlotsofyoungmenlearnedtolivandsubsequentlypurchasedaeroplanes.

Highcostsofmaintenancedisillusionedmanxof themandthecrywasforanaeroplaneforthemanin thestreet.CompetitionsweresponsoredatLympnein theearlytwenties.Ifvouhavereadmyserieson Britishlightaircraftenginesyouwillhaveseenhow lowpower/weightratiomadeultralightflying machinesimpracticalinthosedays.Youwillalsohaxe readhowtheCirrusenginecametobeproduced.

TheLightAeroplaneTrialsservedtoshowde Havillandthatthelightaeroplanessofarproduced werenotwhatwasneededanditwasinsatisfyingthis needthatdeHavillandsethimselfasaleaderinworld designforadecadeandahalf.

OnaSundayafternooninFebruary.G-EBKT emergedfromahangaratStagLaneresplendentina blueandcreamcolourschemeThefirstliveflights convincedSirGeoffreythatInshopeswerejustified. Thiswasindeedtheaeroplanethatthenewlyformed stateaidedclubsrequiredandwithinashorttime90 Mothswereonorder.

ThecapabilitiesoftheMothforextendedtravel weresoondemonstratedbyAlanCobham.Settingout before5.00amonaMaymorningheflewdirectto Zurichin6hours6minutes.Afteralightlunch,the 500milereturnjourneywastotakehim7hours45 minutes.

Thejourneybyrailandseainthosedayswouldhave taken37hours.ColourfulproductionMothsweresoon tobeseenasthemainstayoftheflyingclubs.Green fortheMidlands:redandorangefintheScottish:red forNewcastle:silverandlateryellowfortheLondon club.

TheoriginalMothcost£885andasearlyasAugust 1926thepricecamedownto1:795andwhentheCirrus 11Mothappearedthepricewas£730.Notsurprisingly

intheyearending30t11September,1925.theturnover hadrisento£187.060.TheKingscupracesof1926 and1927werewoninMoths.bothat92.5mph.-this on60hp.

G-EBKTwassenttotheRoyalAirForcesCentral FlyingSchoolforevaluationinOctober1925.Sister aircraftweresubsequentlyorderedforcommunication work,butthewetsumpengineprecludedtheuscin invertedmanoeuvres.However,installationofthe muchlighter75hp.ArmstrongSiddeleyGenet1engine transformedtheMothintoadelightfulaerobatic machineandtheGreekAirForceorderedthemin 1926.FollowingevaluationbytheCFS.theAir Ministrywerepersuadedtoordersix.

TheseGenetMothswerenotreadyforcollection until18thJune,1927,whichleftlittletimeforpractice beforetheHendonAirDisplayofthatyear.Intheir repertoirewasseenIbrthefirsttimetheverticalS.a loopfollowedbyabuntTheoriginalmanoeuvrewas aspininformationbyfiyeaeroplanes.Thepractices forthisprovedadisaster Until eachaeroplanecouldbe madetospinatpreciselythesametune.Evensothere arehairraisingaccountsofwingtipintermeshinglike cogwheelsastheaircraftspundownThedayafterthe displaythe Times commentedonthegreatdisplaythat 'forsheermasteryofmachine,delicacyoftouchand senseoftimeandspacethefirstplacemustbegivento theinstructorsofCFSwhocarriedoutsimultaneous aerobatics'.

Howdidthefirstproductionaeroplanemeasureup totheguidelineslaiddownbyGeoffreydeHavilland. TheproductionDH60Mothcarriedtwooccupants intandeminaspruceandplyboxsectionfuselage. Cruisespeedwastherequired80mph.andendurance 4hoursonthe19gallontank.CG.GreysaidinIns reviewofthe1927Hendondisplay:'TheMothisabout themostcontrollablemachineintheworldandin manywaystheeasiesttofly.'

GeoffreydeHavillandiscreditedforthedesign.he readilyadmitsinhisautobiographythattheeffortsoon becameacooperativeonesincehehadproducedthe GAdrawing.Oneoftheuseful,evenrevolutionary ideascontributedwasthedifferentialaileroncontrol carefullythoughtoutbyChiefDraughtsmanA.E. In1966.1hadflownmyMcCulloch-poweredBensen B8-Mforovertenhours(inthepoweredconfiguration) when.onafinalapproachat300feetofaltitude,there occurredthemostheart-rate-alteringandbreathtakingcessationofnoisethatanypilotislikelyto suffer.Theenginehadsimplyandirrevocablyseized andthepropellercametoanalmostinstantaneous stop.certainlyfarquickerthanifthemagnetohad beenswitchedoff.

Belowmewereverysmallfieldsenclosedbyearthbanks,hedgesandsolid-lookingwoodenfences. Slightlyahead,therewasanabandonedroadatright anglestomyflight-path;itwasbeingusedasa repositoryforcontractor'sstonesandrubble.Just aheadofthat,therewasanewroadparalleltotheold one,naturallywithanewandevenmorefearsomelookingfence!The\vindwasdeadaheadwhich,at least,wasinmyfavour."Oh!MyGawdr',flashed throughmymind."Keepyourhead.Ekin.you'll wreckthemachineonthestonesorfence,bruiseyourselfandmaybebreakaboneortwobutyoushould surviveifyoudon'tloseyo LIf nerve".

Fortunately,thelift/dragratiooftheBensenisso lowthatitdidnotglidefaratalland.almostequally suddenly.Ifoundmyselfstoppedonthegroundinthe up-rightposition,withtherotorstillwhirlingabove me.Iwasabout8to10yardsfromthefirstwooden fence,inwhatseemedameresecondortwosincethe suddenpowerfailure.Nodamagehadbeendoneto themachineandithadallhappenedsoquickk— probably12secondsfrombeginningtoend—thatI havesonicdifficultyinbelieingithappenedatall.One thingisforsure:afixed-winglightaircraft,insimilar circumstances,wouldcertainlyhavebeenwrecked althoughthepilotmighthavesurvived.

IsufferedasecondpowerfailureinaMcCandless gvroplanewhileclimbingatfullpowerandhaving reachedabout1000.Fortunately,thewindwasagain deadaheadofmeandtherewasplentyofrunwayin frontofme,whichgoestoshowthewisdomoftaking offfromthebeginningoftherunwayeventhough one needsonlyasmallfractionofit.

offonebladeofthepropeller.Thelatterprovedthat thepropellerwasnotrotatingatthemomentof impact.

WhilstIhadalwaysl'eltthatIshouldpractisepowerofflandings(Bill,ifyouhadbeenfortunateenoughto trainunderGeoffWhatley.youwouldhave had to! P.C.L.),thegreatriskofwreckingthemachineduring thelearningprocessneverpermittedinetoactually switchtheengineoffuntilSummer1973,whenIhad completed70hoursHyingandsofeltreasonably proficient.

Atabout300ft.,withtherunwayandwindahead andwithatremendouseffortofwill.Iclosedthe throttleandswitchedthemagnetotoOff.Themachine lostheightquicklyasexpectedandyawedabout70 degreestotheright.immediatelycausinggreatpanic andregret.Anyway.nowirreversiblycommitted,I hadtosuppressthepanicandconcentrateonexecuting aprecisionflarewithnoside-slip.Ilandedwellenough butontheedgeofthe1500.runwayandat70degrees toitscentre-line!OnethingthatIwasnotmentally preparedforwasthelongtimeandgreatlossofheight thatoccurredintheactofclosingthethrottleand waitingforthepropellertocometoastop.(This willbelesspronouncedinadirect-drivepropeller,as ismorecommonlyused,P.0L.)Soitwaspossible thattheenginehadnotfullystoppeduntilIwasvery closetothe'bottom'andthatIhadnotleftmyself enoughroomtogetthemachineyawedstraightagain Whendecidingatwhatheighttoswitchtheengine 01111amafraidthatmyemotions,whichwantedalow height,wonovermyintellectwhichwantedagreat heightsoastoallowtimetosortthingsout.

Myfirstieactionwasimmediatelytorepeatthe exercise.because1thoughtthattheyawwasprobably causedbyinnocent'reasonsaslistedbelowandthat onlypractise Was required.

Somepossiblereasonswere:—

(a)Agustmighthaveoccurredatthevitalmoment.

(h)Astherudderisintheslip-streamofthepropeller. itwillhavemuchlesscontrolpowerwiththe engineoff.Also.Ibelievethatwithoutthepropeller slip-stream,onewillhavelostayawdamper.

Thegyroisriggedtoflystraightandlevelwith engineatcruisepower.So, if theengineisstopped. itwillnotwanttoflystraightandlevel!Infact,if onedoesnotaltertherudderposition,itwillyaw totheright(orleft,dependingonyourpropeller rotation.PCL.)

Perhapssomeorientationsofthestoppedpropeller wouldcauseayawingmoment.

As1pitchedthenosedownquiteabruptlyasthe enginewasrunningdown,agyroscopicmoment wouldhavebeencausedwhichwouldhavegiven ayawingmomenttotheright.

Thenmysecondreactionwas,"Elin,thisisthered lightflashing.Perhapsthegyroisdirectionallyunstable withtheengineoff.Youwouldbeafooltoignorethe warning,etc.!"

SoIwenttotheAeronauticaldepartmentofQueens University,Belfast,whoverykindlymadeupa quarter-scalemodeltogointheirwindtunnel.This quicklyshowedthatthegyrowasnotdirectionallystableaboutthetunnelcentre-linewiththeengineoff

butwasstableabout20degreeseithersideofthe centre-line.(Ifthegyroplaneisstableaboutthecentreline,itmeansthat,ifyouareflyingstraightaheadand agustknocksyouofftooneside,themachinewill straightenitselflikeaweather-cock.Ifitisunstable andyoudonothing,itwillyawworseandworseand theoutcomemaybedisastrousiftheinstabilityis severeHowever,itispermissibleandevendesirable sometimestohavemildinstability,providingthe controlsarefullyeffectiveincorrectingitandthe pilot'sreactiontimeislessthanisrequiredforthe instabilitytodivergetothedisasterpoint.)

Ifonethinksoftherudderofourtypeofgyroasa triangle,rotorclearanceandpropellerclearance restrictthemaximumareaofthefin,andtogelbest valuefromtheextraarcaonedoesnotwantto shortenthearmfromthefin/rudder'scentreof pressuretotheaircraft's c.a aswouldoccurinmovingthefrontedgeofthefinforward.

planetips,awayfromtheaircraft'sfore-and-aftcentreline,whereblanketingiscausedbytheengineand cockpituntilthemachineisyawedabout20degrees,in ourcase.1tisinterestingtonotethattheAirandSpace 18A,theVicta,theCampbellCougar,theMcCulloch J2,theTervannakiandtheCiervaC30allhavetins placedontailplanetipsincleanair.oneithersideof theaircraft'scentre-line.

Ihavesincecarriedout14engine-offlandingsand 70hoursflyingwithnobotherandhavebeenlucky enoughtohavebeengivenarideinaBellSiouzin whichengine-offlandingsweredemonstrated.Its engine-offrateofdescentismorethanmine(1800-1900 vs1400fpm),whilstglidingspeedissimilar(about 60mph),butitcanhave'twobitesatthecherry'in thatitcanapplyabitofcollectivepitchintheflare, aswellasexecuteoursortofflare.

Conclusion

Itwouldappeartomethatthosepeoplewhoadd cockpits(particularlythosewithabigsidearea,such asisrequiredtocovertheBensentowingframework) togyroswhichwereoriginallydesignedwithoutcockpits,andwhodonotcheckupontheengine-off stabilityasfarasdirectionalcontrolisconcerned, mightbelayingsomenastyfrightsinstoreforthemselves,iftheirengineeverstopsinflieht.

Undoubtedly,thetwogroupsofinitialsinmostuse todayareQFEandQNH.Thelettersthemselveshave nodirectrelationshiptotheinformationtheyconvey. Perhapsweshouldgobacktotheolddaysbeforethe warwhenmostradiocommunicationwasbyMorse Code.Anincomingaircraftwouldcalltheairport 'RequestQFE'inMorse,meaning'Whatisthepresent AtmosphericPressureatofficialaerodromeelevation?'

Backwouldcometheanswer,againinMorse:'QFE xxx'meaningthepresentAtmosphericPressureat officialaerodromeelevationisxxxmillibars'.This informationisvitallyimportanttothepilotasitwill ensurethathisAltimetertellshimhowhighheisabove theaerodromeandanyhillsorobstaclesinthe immediatevicinityoftheaerodrome.Onadescent throughcloudhewillreadfromhischarthisOCL,or 'ObstacleClearanceLimit',thisisthelowestaltitude towhichhecandescendwithoutbeingindangerof hittingthegroundorcollidingwithanobstruction.If hecannotseethegroundwhenhereachestheOCL thenhemustclimbupagainandeithertryagainor diverttoanotheraerodrome.

Thereare,however,twoQNHvalues,the'Aerodrome QNH'andthe'RegionalQNH'.Theformerischiefly usedtochecktheaccuracyofthealtimeterintheaircraft,whilstthelatterisvitallyimportanttothepilot duringhisflight.TheRegionalQNHisthelowest forecastpressureforaparticularregioncoveringa twohourperiod,andisusedbythepilottoensurethat hedoesnotcollidewithanymountainsorother obstructionsonhisroute.Wedonotintendtoallow ourselvestobedivertedintoexplainingtoyouabout AltimeterSettingRegions.YourInstructorwilldoit veryefficiently.Wewillemphasisehoweverthatitis verydangeroustogetthetwomixedup!

OppositetheFlightOfficedooratShorehamwe haveanInformationBoardwhichshouldbeclosely studiedbyeverypilotbeforetake-off.Onitwewill findsomeveryusefulinformationsuchastherunway inuse,theQAN—'directionandstrengthofthe surfacewind,'andperhaps'QNT'25-30knots.This meansthatthesurfacewindisexpectedtogust25-30 knots.Whenusingtheradiopilotsdonot,asarule, usethesetwoextractsfromtheQCode,preferringto speakeverydaylanguage.UseoftheVHFradiois sometimesreferredtoastheR/T(RadioTelephony).

AbouthalfwayalongtheEasternboundaryof ShorehamAirportstandsashorttowerontopof whichiswhatlookslikealittletelevisionaerialwhich iscontinuallyrevolving.ThisistheCRDF,orthe CathodeRayDirectionFindingequipment,which soundsverygrand.Itisveryusefulbecauseitenables theControllerinATC—AirTrafficControl—tohelp youifyougetlost.

Whenapilotneedsassistancetoreachhisdestination,orgetbacktotheaerodromeifheisonalocal flight,hecallsShorehamHomer'RequestQDM', whichmeans'WhatisthemagneticheadingImust steertoreachyouinconditionsofnowind?'The Controllerwillreply'YourQDMisxxxdegrees'.If ourpilotiscleverhewillnotsteerexactlytheQDM given,butwilladdorsubtractafewdegreestoallow forthewind.Ifhedoesn'twanttobebotheredwith thementalarithmetichecanjuststeertheQDMgiven, andbycallingforanewQDMabouteverythree minuteswilleventuallyarriveovertheaerodromeinto wind.Thisprocedure,ofcourse,takesalittlelonger. Istartedbuildingfourandahalfyearsagoatthe sametimeasIcommencedanundergrad.coursein PhysicsattheUniversityofSouthampton.Duringthe firstthreeyearsconstructionwasslow,theairframe keptatmyparents'homeinKentandIhadtospend mostofmyholidaysworkingforthecashtobuy wood.ForthelastyearandahalfIhavechanged statusfromundergrad.toresearchstudent,myMono isnowatSouthamptonandIcanaffordtospendalot moretimeandalittlemoremoneyonmyaeroplane.

Thepurposeofthisarticleandthosethatfollowwill betodescribetheprogressofmyMono,sothatother buildersofwoodenaircraftmaybenefit.IwilldescribethemistakesImade,thesnagsanddodgesI discovered,andhowIwouldtackletheproblems againnowthatIhavegainedsonicexperience.

Istartedmyprojectwithverylittlewood-working experienceandtheremaybebettermethodsthanthose Ihaveused.Ihopeanybodyreadingamistakeorable tosuggestabettersolutiontoaproblemwillwritein toPopularFlying.Withanyluckbasicproblemscan bethrashedoutinthecorrespondencecolumn,resultinginlessexpensivemistakesandmoreaeroplanes.

Ididaroughcostingoftheaeroplane,itwasthen obviousthatI.couldneverafforditsoIthrewthe estimateawayandboughtasetofMonoplans.With theadvantageofhind-sightIcansaythefinancial burdenisnomorethanmildlycripplingaslongasyou don'tsmokeorrunacar,youmustalsohavean understandinggirl-friend/wife.Understandingparents arealsoagreathelp.

Iambuildingtheextendedcentre-sectionversionof theaeroplane,withoutflaps...Onenotehere,my plansshowthetailplaneat0incidencebutFbelieve thereisamandatorymod.to-3'incidence.P.F.A. engineeringpleaseconfirm.

havefoundthatitcertainlypaystoshoparound whenlookingforaircraftmaterials,forexample—1 buymysprucefromaboat-builderswhosupplyabout 10%cheaper(orbetter)thananearbyaircraftfirm.T hadnoideathatIcouldbuyfromthatsupplieruntil myinspectorsuggestedit,hehadquitealotofexperiencewiththeparticularboatbuildersandwas perfectlysatisfiedaslongastheorderhadbeenmarked "mast-stockselectedtoaircraftgrade".

Ihavealsohadboltsquotedatwildlydifferent prices:8por4peach.Ipurchasedmyplywhenthere wasashortageofthethinnersizesandIhadtosend awayforit—I'mnotsureifplypricesvaryfromone

suppliertoanother,IdoknowthatIamnowrather unhappyabouthavingstuffsenttome,becausethis particularplywassentfromtheNorthandBritish Railmanagedtopenetratesomeveryadequatepacking anddamagethetopsheet.Boat-buildersareunlikely tobeabletohelpwithplyastheydon'tseemtostock aircraftqualityandtheyseemtoignoresizesthinner than3mm.

AninvaluableaidtobuyingisthewealthofexperiencefreelyavailableatthelocalStrutmeeting.

Onceyou'vegotit,you'vegottocutitup.ryedone allmywood-work(exceptonecutonthemainspars) usingtoolsfoundinmyfather'sgarageplusacouple ofgoodiesboughtspecially.Onedeviceworthits weightingoldisasmallbandsawcosting£29.The timeitsavesbyzippingthroughplyandspruce, coupledwiththeeaseandaccuracyofoperationmake thisamust.Ifindthatusingafiner-toothedbladethan suggestedbythemakerstakesalittlelongerbutproducesaverycleancutindeed—suitableforglueing withoutfurtherpreparation.Acoarserbladeisrequiredforrippingalongthegrain,andthistypeofcut willrequirecleaningupafterwards.Note:—blades alwaysbreakonSundayssogetsomespares!

Iuseatenonsawforcuttinglengthsoffstockthatis toolongtofitillthehandsaw,actuallyithasveryfine teethsoIthinkitistermedadove-tailsaw.

Astaplerwithaplentifulsupplyofstaplesisrequired—onewhichfiresastaplewhenyoupulla triggeristhebestsort.

Asmoothingplaneisanothermandatorywoodworkingtool.Ihaveallowedmyselfaluxuryinthat myplanehasnoneedofsharpening,thebusinessend isratherlikeaninjectorrazorandwhenanewcutting edgeisrequiredaleveristurned,theoldedgedrops outandthenewoneisfittedandlockedwiththelever. Takesabouttenminutestofindtheboxofspareblades andabouttensecondstochangeone.

Whenitconiestostickingthosebitsofwoodtogetheryouwillfindbasicallyfourgluesavailable.Two gounderthenameofAerolite.Aerolite300consistsof alightgreyadhesiveabouttheviscosityofGolden Syrupandisapplied,generallybyspatulacarvedfrom scrapwood,toonesurfacetobejoined.Theother surfaceismoistenedwithhardenerandthetwo broughttogetherandlightlydamped.Thehardeneris acolourless,wateryliquidwhichcanbeobtainedfast, mediumorslow.Ttissometimesavailablecolour codedforspeedofcuring.

Aerolite306isessentially thesame as300except thattheadhesiveisintheformofawhitepowder whichismixedwithwater.Useitthenasfor300.

306hastheadvantagethatthepowder has avery longstoragelife,about2yearscornparedto(Ithink) 6monthsforthepre-mixed300.Once306adhesiveis mixeditcanbekeptinasealedjarfor weeks.

comeintocontactwithironsoyoucan'tusepaint brusheswithmetalferrulesasapplicators.Thehardener iseasilyappliedusingabitoffeltfixedtoastickasa swab.Thehardenertendstobeabsorbedveryrapidly bywood,especiallyendgrain,anditisusuallyapplied justbeforethesurfacesarebroughttogether.

Aeroduxresinscomeintwoforms.Bothhaveared liquidadhesivebutonehasawhitepowderhardener, theotherhasaliquidhardener.Inbothcaseshardener andadhesivearethoroughlymixedinfixedproportion beforeuse.Bothsurfacestobejoinedarepaintedwith theglueandbroughttogether.Themixedglueisusable forabouttwohours,itratherdependsonthetemperature.Aeroduxisphysicallydescribedratherwellas strawberryjam,andthejointshaveacharacteristicred glueline.Storagelifeisabout10months(againthisis relyingonmemory).

DuringthepastfouryearsIhavehadoccasionto useallfourtypesofglueandcomparingconvenience, shelflife,potlifeandcost,Ithinkthegluetouseisthe oneyoucangetholdofeasiest,unlesslikemeyou havetoworkathighintensityatlongintervalsin whichcaseAerolite306withitslongshelflifehas advantages.(ftalsohastheinstructionsonthetinso youcan'tlosethem).

Nowyouneedsomethingtodoallthisworkon.T foundasuitablesolutionintwojigboardsmadeupas inFig.I.Beforeusethesurfaceispreparedbyscraping andpaintingwithwhiteemulsion,thisproducesa goodsurfacefordrawingonwithapencil.Thejig boardcanbesupportedontrestlesor,asIamdoing now,usedontopofanexistingbenchtoprotectthe surface.
