No?—Nordid1'tillImetNickandsawtheprogress thatheismakingwithaTaylorMonoplane.Nick learnedtoflyonlythreeandahalfyearsagoandnow hasaCPLandCFItohiscredit.Hispresentjobhe sayshe'fell'intobypurechance,whilsttakingtimeoff toworkinthehangarononeofhisseveralre-builds-aNipper,'ATWB',Minicab,'BANC'andothers.He tellsastoryofflyingtoaShorehamRally,findinga nestofbirdsintheaeroplane,flyinghomeandseeing themotherbirdreturntotheaircrafttofeedit'syoung unawareofthejoyridethey'dbeenon.Nick'sface turnsredatthementionofpre-flightinspections!

Well,theCinquePortsAeroClubismovingand althoughnowbasedatLydd,isoneoftheoldestAero Clubsstillinbeing.Aroundthebonfirethatnight thereweresadheartsattheendofanostalgicera.Like oldmenwegrassrootsaviatorsliketolookbackon thegoodolddays,whendopeandfabricwasallthere WAStomakeaflyingmachineoutof.ButBusiness AirTravel,TheFlyingClub,BillOvery,NickCole andalltheirhelpershavemovedtoanewhome.They promisethePFAthesameserviceasalways.Wewish themwell.Ineverdidgettothatopeningpartyat Lydd.
Onceuponatimeacarefreevintageaeroplanepilot wasflyinghislovelyyellowbiplaneoverthesunny countrysideofOxfordshirewestwardstowardsthe beautifulCherwellValley.Aheadofhimlaythesleepy markettownofBicesterandhesensiblyglancedathis maptoconfirmhisposition.Butwhathcsawalarmed himandposedhimquiteaproblem.Heknewthathe shouldclimbtocrossthetownatnotlessthan1500 feetbuthecouldn'tbecauseoftheactiveMATZpanhandlestretchingeastfromHeyford.Sohethought aboutflyingroundthetown.Buthecouldnotturn leftashewouldinfringetheWeston-on-the-Green darTerareanorcouldheturnrightforfearofinfringingtheR.A.F.Bicesteraerodromezone.Whaton earthcouldhcdo?Asheponderedtheproblemthe sunwentbehindacloudandherealisedthatitwasone ofthosedaysheshouldhavestayedinbed.

FormanyofustheCoralSeabringstomindthe majorAmericannavalvictoryintheSouth-west Pacific,wheninMay1942theJapaneseadvance towardsAustraliawashaltedbythedecisiveuseof aircraftcarriersandairpower.Sometenyearsearlier thistropicalexpanseofwaterwasfirstcrossedbyan aeroplaneflyingfromNewGuineatoQueensland, Australia.ThepilotwasMr.S.Marshall,anAustralian whohadlearnedtoflyonAvro504'sin1919andthe aeroplanewasaWestlandWidgeonparasolwith extrafueltankageforthelongflight.MrMarshall,a spryseptuagenarian,stillownstheWidgeon,VTI-UGI, tothisdayalthoughitisnowdismantledandstored behindthescenesofhisaviationmuseuminSydney. Oilpressureconfirmedthatallwaswellandwe taxiedout,theenginehavingsomeratheroddpatches ofvibration,perhapsfrombacklashinthegearing,but carefulselectionofthesmoothpatchesgavemore comfort.
AthighRPM.,andthatisratherabove3000,the engineissilk-smoothallthetime,soourimmediate misgivingsweregroundless.TheSwallowaccelerated smoothlyenoughformypeaceofmind,theflying attitudeeasilyattainedwithoutundueswingandthen soaredintotheairgracefully.
Itreallyisasuperbpieceofdesign.thelongwings givingaflyingspeedofjust40kts.attake-offanda climbinthe50s.Itflewhappilyinthe70-80rangeon onlyan80h.p.engineandwasveryefficientforits age.Inoticedthatthewingscontainedfeaturessuch aswash-outatthetipsfoundelsewhereonmuchlater woodenaeroplanessuchastheJodelseries.
Astallgaveverygoodcontroldowntothe40sand aaentlepitchnose-downwithnotendencytodropa wing.Evenmisuseofthecontrolsgaveasedateentry tothespin,fromwhichrecoverywasimmediately effective.Areallady,Ithought.
ArrivalatOldWardenwasnoproblemandthe Swallowcanbelandedinquiteashortspaceoffan approachat55kts..theonlylimitationbeingacrosswindproblemwhichfirstmanifestsitselfasoneruns outofrudder.Intruth,thereisn'treallymuchrudder controlatverylowspeeds,butbearinginmindthat aeroplanesofthedaywereflownintowindwhen takingoffandlanding.thissimplymeansthatthe Swallowpilotmustn'tpushhisluckinmodern conditions.

TheSwallowisbestdescribedasanAeroplaneor Character.ThesoundofthePobjoyisunlikeanything elseIhaveeversatbehind,butitisincrediblyefficient, deliveringits80orsohorsesataneffectiveRPM,then applyingthetractiveeffortbywayofgreatwhirling bladesofunbelievablepitchatwhatwepresumedto bethemosteffectiverotationalspeed,atthebusiness end.

IamamemberofTheUltra-lightAircraftAssociation,W.A.Branch.In1958orthereaboutsthisgroup beganworkonaDruineTurbi.Wheuthejobwasclose tobeingcompletedtheaircraftwasmovedtoKellerberrin,acountrytown106milesfromPerth.Ijoined theassociationandheardofit.Beinganoldie,I wantedanaircraftwithnottoomuchworkrequiredto finish,soflewtoKellerberrinandlaterboughtitfor 1000dollars.TheaircrafthaswithittwoGipsyMinor engines,onebeingincomplete.Theonetobeusedhas lowhoursafteranoverhaul.AMothMinorengine mountisfitted.IwishtogetintouchwithTurNowners inEnglandinordertofindoutiftheenginemountfor aMothMinorisapprovedandisbeingusedforthe Turbi.
Thewingwascompletebutuncovered,fuselage mostlycompletetogetherwithcompletedandcovered controlsurfaces.TwoGipsyMinorengines(onebeing incomplete)andthreeairscrewsandinstrumentscame withthedeal.
MyfirstjobwastohireatruckandshiftittoPerth fromKellerberrin,acountrytown106milesaway. Butthatisanotherstory.

FirstthePortTailplane..'ThreeGreens'The fabricwassound!NexttheStarboardtailplane.This timetheindicatorgaveonlyI green. butstillshowed thefabricwasacceptable.
Wemovedontothefuselagetop.Thetesterripped throughthefabricsoquicklytherewasbarelytimeto noticethecolourcoderingindicatingthe[resistance beforepenetration.Fuselagesidesandbottomwere similarasalsowerebothundercarriagelegs.Bynow itwasbecomingaprocessionof"Reds-.Starboard wingtop.fourtestsallgaveadecisive"red".The undersideswerethesameaswastheaileron.Wewent tothePortmainplaneandprovedconclusivelythat herealsothefabricwas'pastitsprime'.

IfoundthatR.F.SavwellofGatwickstockmost itemsrequiredforacompleterebuildand,inparticular, DirectorStevenSaywellhasbeenmosthelpfulin loaningdrawingsandacompletefabricwinghag to useasapatternwhilemakingupmyown.AtSaywelEs Iboughtaroll of DTD575fabric,allthe2"and4" widecrimpedre-inforcingtapes.thewaxedstring. Thefuselagewasnowreadyforthe"treatment-. Highcostsofmaintenancedisillusionedmanxof themandthecrywasforanaeroplaneforthemanin thestreet.CompetitionsweresponsoredatLympnein theearlytwenties.Ifvouhavereadmyserieson Britishlightaircraftenginesyouwillhaveseenhow lowpower/weightratiomadeultralightflying machinesimpracticalinthosedays.Youwillalsohaxe readhowtheCirrusenginecametobeproduced.

Belowmewereverysmallfieldsenclosedbyearthbanks,hedgesandsolid-lookingwoodenfences. Slightlyahead,therewasanabandonedroadatright anglestomyflight-path;itwasbeingusedasa repositoryforcontractor'sstonesandrubble.Just aheadofthat,therewasanewroadparalleltotheold one,naturallywithanewandevenmorefearsomelookingfence!The\vindwasdeadaheadwhich,at least,wasinmyfavour."Oh!MyGawdr',flashed throughmymind."Keepyourhead.Ekin.you'll wreckthemachineonthestonesorfence,bruiseyourselfandmaybebreakaboneortwobutyoushould surviveifyoudon'tloseyo LIf nerve".
Fortunately,thelift/dragratiooftheBensenisso lowthatitdidnotglidefaratalland.almostequally suddenly.Ifoundmyselfstoppedonthegroundinthe up-rightposition,withtherotorstillwhirlingabove me.Iwasabout8to10yardsfromthefirstwooden fence,inwhatseemedameresecondortwosincethe suddenpowerfailure.Nodamagehadbeendoneto themachineandithadallhappenedsoquickk— probably12secondsfrombeginningtoend—thatI havesonicdifficultyinbelieingithappenedatall.One thingisforsure:afixed-winglightaircraft,insimilar circumstances,wouldcertainlyhavebeenwrecked althoughthepilotmighthavesurvived.
IsufferedasecondpowerfailureinaMcCandless gvroplanewhileclimbingatfullpowerandhaving reachedabout1000.Fortunately,thewindwasagain deadaheadofmeandtherewasplentyofrunwayin frontofme,whichgoestoshowthewisdomoftaking offfromthebeginningoftherunwayeventhough one needsonlyasmallfractionofit.

offonebladeofthepropeller.Thelatterprovedthat thepropellerwasnotrotatingatthemomentof impact.
WhilstIhadalwaysl'eltthatIshouldpractisepowerofflandings(Bill,ifyouhadbeenfortunateenoughto trainunderGeoffWhatley.youwouldhave had to! P.C.L.),thegreatriskofwreckingthemachineduring thelearningprocessneverpermittedinetoactually switchtheengineoffuntilSummer1973,whenIhad completed70hoursHyingandsofeltreasonably proficient.
Atabout300ft.,withtherunwayandwindahead andwithatremendouseffortofwill.Iclosedthe throttleandswitchedthemagnetotoOff.Themachine lostheightquicklyasexpectedandyawedabout70 degreestotheright.immediatelycausinggreatpanic andregret.Anyway.nowirreversiblycommitted,I hadtosuppressthepanicandconcentrateonexecuting aprecisionflarewithnoside-slip.Ilandedwellenough butontheedgeofthe1500.runwayandat70degrees toitscentre-line!OnethingthatIwasnotmentally preparedforwasthelongtimeandgreatlossofheight thatoccurredintheactofclosingthethrottleand waitingforthepropellertocometoastop.(This willbelesspronouncedinadirect-drivepropeller,as ismorecommonlyused,P.0L.)Soitwaspossible thattheenginehadnotfullystoppeduntilIwasvery closetothe'bottom'andthatIhadnotleftmyself enoughroomtogetthemachineyawedstraightagain Whendecidingatwhatheighttoswitchtheengine 01111amafraidthatmyemotions,whichwantedalow height,wonovermyintellectwhichwantedagreat heightsoastoallowtimetosortthingsout.
Myfirstieactionwasimmediatelytorepeatthe exercise.because1thoughtthattheyawwasprobably causedbyinnocent'reasonsaslistedbelowandthat onlypractise Was required.

Aerolite306isessentially thesame as300except thattheadhesiveisintheformofawhitepowder whichismixedwithwater.Useitthenasfor300.
306hastheadvantagethatthepowder has avery longstoragelife,about2yearscornparedto(Ithink) 6monthsforthepre-mixed300.Once306adhesiveis mixeditcanbekeptinasealedjarfor weeks.
